Jordan Springs Probus Club The Club was formed under the Probus values of supporting and promoting Friendship, Fellowship and Fun in retirement. Probus is a non-political, not-for-profit organisation which is a social gathering for retired and semi-retired members. We welcome new members from Jordan Springs and surrounding suburbs. Your local Probus Club at Jordan Springs is getting back to some normality. Penrith City Council have allowed the reopening of the Community Hall and local Pubs and Clubs are moving back to normal capacity. This has allowed us to recommence our monthly meetings with the inclusion of guest speakers and getting back to enjoying our monthly lunches with an expanding choice of local venues. The committee continues to plan for the eventual lifting/relaxing of restrictions and the return to a more normal monthly agenda. This ensures members can look forward to an exciting program featuring interesting guest speakers, monthly meetings, the opportunity to travel locally or around the world and enjoy exclusive discounts through the Probus Member Benefits Scheme including access to exclusive Probus Travel Insurance, developing new interests, and staying active. Future planned events for the coming twelve months will include Hawkesbury River Paddle Steamer for daytime cruise with lunch, Postman’s Run out of Brooklyn, daytime melodies at the Joan, Xmas in July event, and an overnight/s coach tour. The Jordan Springs Probus Club meets at the Jordan Springs Community Hub on the 4th Tuesday of every month, at 9:30am for a 10:00am start. Visitors are most welcome. Village Charm is a collaborative public art project that brought Llandilo residents together with professional artist, Elizabeth West, to create new sculptural works from recycled and repurposed materials. The series of eight workshops were recently held and were a success. They were held in Wilson Park on Seventh Ave over the April-May period and throughout the series, the gentle exploration of mental health themes was led by their project partner, Neami Nepean-Penrith. Neami Nepean-Penrith is a not-for-profit community mental health service which supports people to stay well and thrive in the community. Being a recovery and strengthsbased service, it aims to support people to maintain independence and wellbeing and strengthen connections to people’s communities and build support networks. The finished sculptures will now create a vibrant gateway at the front of Wilson Park on Seventh Ave, a popular spot for motorists taking a lunch break or seeking respite in the shade. A celebration of the works and the residents who helped create them will be held in June 2021. Village Charm Llandilo is a component of the wellbeingfocused Village Café project produced by Council’s Neighbourhood Renewal Program. r A great initiative for the local community | Image/Article: Penrith City Council

Jordan Springs Paying It Forward

Jordan Springs Pay It Forward is a local group that was recently formed, where members of the community can come together to help one another through donations such as furniture, clothing, or homewares. Paying it forward is when someone, who has received an act of kindness, does something kind for another instead of just accepting the original good deed. The group was created by Anna Glushkov last month, after being a member of local pay it forward groups herself. “Having moved out last year, I needed to furnish and equip an apartment. I joined my local pay it forward groups and Facebook pages. They have grown in popularity with many people stuck at home, the Marie Kondo effect and the minimalist movement making waves. I enjoyed the community spirit that they fostered and the fact that I wasn’t contributing to more waste. It was the perfect opportunity to start a local group” explained Anna to the Jordan Springs Gazette. Since starting the Jordan Springs Pay It Forward group on Facebook in less than a month, it now boasts over 30 members and continues to grow. “I think it’s important to have local community groups like this as it’s nice to know and to help out your neighbours. It’s also a more environmentally friendly alternative to avoid landfill,” said Anna. “Items that are in relatively good, reusable condition that you would like to pass on are welcome, except any illegal items and no money is to be exchanged. If you are in search of something, you can post it on there too” Anna continued. For more information, search ‘Jordan Springs PIF’ on Facebook. r A new online community group | Image: www.pexels.com

Woolworths Introduces Quiet Hour in Jordan Springs

Woolworths Jordan Springs now offers a low-sensory Quiet Hour shopping experience designed to reduce anxiety and sensory stress for customers with specific needs. During Quiet Hour, Woolworths Jordan Springs will lower lights, turn down music or radio and turn off oven buzzers for an hour, every Tuesday between 10:30am and 11:30am. Following a successful trial in select stores, Quiet Hour will now be rolled out nationally. To date, there are already more than 264 stores nationwide which are already offering this initiative. Woolworths Jordan Springs Manager, Kym Powell said: “Our customers have told us there’s a need in the community for a low-sensory shopping experience in the area, so we’re pleased to expand Quiet Hour to Jordan Springs. “Our team takes great pride in ensuring the store is quieter and less stressful for customers who want to shop during Quiet Hour, and we look forward to welcoming them in store”. The low sensory initiative was developed in consultation with disability service providers at Life Without Barriers. Life Without Barriers Chief Executive Claire Robbs said: “Quiet Hour is a fantastic initiative by Woolworths that recognises the different needs of some customers. “It gives people a way to do their shopping and increase their independence in an environment that is not stressful and overwhelming to them”. Quiet Hour runs from 10:30am - 11:30am every Tuesday. During this hour, temporary changes are made to the store, including: • Turning off bakery ovens or chicken cooker buzzers • Reducing volume on store phones and registers on the trading floor • Clearing store entry ways • Reducing lighting and in store music • Removing roll cages from the shop floor and; • Stopping all PA announcements (excluding cases of emergencies) r Chris Chippendale, Life Without Barriers Executive Lead, Disability Engagement with Woolworths team members | Image/Article: Woolworths

Off to Market we Go! The Ropes Crossing Markets have kicked off last month at Ropes Crossing Oval in Guild Place. The local markets will be held monthly on the last Sunday of the month, until September this year. Organised by Ropes Crossing Strikers Football Club, the markets feature a club-run BBQ, coffee van, jumping castles and local stallholders. Visitors are also treated to watch a local game of Sunday football being played on the oval. “Our motivation for starting the markets was to give something back to the community as we have not had a market day since the previous one that was done by the Rotary Club. This will also bring more exposure to the football club” explained Anthony Xerri of Ropes Crossing Strikers Football Club. With the monthly markets continuing until September, the Ropes Crossing Community Carnival will then be held. “It’s great to see an event like this bring the community together. It’s the perfect day out for the family to enjoy” smiled Anthony. Fore more information, search ‘Ropes Crossing Monthly Markets’ on Facebook.

There is no Excuse for Violence

Enrolling Now WE OFFER • • • • • • • • • •

Last month, I wrote about domestic and family violence. It is a hot topic at the moment, and rightly so. Domestic and family violence causes so much disruption to people’s lives and has ripple effects for children, women, and men. 1 in 4 families are affected by DFV, and that’s probably a conservative number because so much of it goes unreported. 1 woman on average is killed each week by her partner or ex-partner. Have you been watching See What You Made Me Do on SBS? If not, check out this 3 part documentary on SBS Demand. But watch and listen carefully in the second episode how one man minimises his violence and blames the woman. ‘If she didn’t nag me I wouldn’t have snapped and tried to strangle her.’ What? That one slipped past the editing crew. Since when did someone’s words justify you trying to kill him/her? Have you also seen the television ads ‘Unmute Yourself’ (https://youtu.be/9g4-puN2K9o)? They are brilliant. A boy is seen being aggressive to a girl, and one parent says ‘he probably just likes her’, and the other parent reflects ‘no, there is no excuse, we have to stop him’. A fella on the sidelines at the footy tells a young male player ‘stop playing like a girl’ and an older man says ‘what’s wrong with playing like a girl?’. And finally I come to my point of this article. There is no excuse for violence of words or actions. What we teach our little boys is how they will grow up. Don’t give them a sense of entitlement, that just because they are boys they can do as they please. If they grow up rough they will be rough men, and it might be your daughter or daughter-in-law that they will be treating rough. Don’t blame the victim, ‘if she didn’t do this, he wouldn’t do that’. Teach your children that they can’t control anybody else but themselves and they alone are responsible for their thoughts, words, and actions. I have had the opportunity and honour to observe a Men’s Behaviour Change group recently. There are a few organisations around (BaptistCare, Relationships Australia) that offer individual counselling and groupwork for men who use coercion, control, and violence with their partners and in their families. These programs are supportive and gentle, but they do challenge the men to take responsibility for their own behaviour. What I have learnt from the men in the groups is don’t grow your boys up rough. Acknowledge that they have feelings, and allow them to express their feelings. Grow them up as humans, regardless of gender. We all have the power to end violence. r

Our Next Generation of Firefighters

With the aftermath of the recent NSW bushfires still raw, an amazing show of triumph over tragedy has taken place in the local community. Llandilo Rural Fire Brigade held their 2021 Cadets Open Day last month and 26 aspiring firefighting cadets came forward, with the support of their parents and guardians in attendance. “On the day, they were taken through the ins and outs of the cadet’s program and what it means to be a member of the Rural Fire Service. Our cadets were then given the opportunity to participate in basic firefighting techniques and were introduced to our appliances and various firefighting equipment” said Jelena Borovicanin, of Llandilo Rural Fire Brigade. Following the information session, the Llandilo Brigade received 17 applications, which brings the total of their cadet team to 21. They anticipate that more applications will be received over the coming weeks. “The Cadets Program is a great opportunity for children and young people to connect with their community and develop a sense of social responsibility and volunteerism, whilst learning about fire safety/prevention and developing practical life skills. Not only do our cadets participate in operational support activities like community engagement, social events and brigade training, our team also participates in Cadet National/State Championships which are loads of fun!” explained Jelena. Llandilo RFB take pride in their cadet team, with a strong emphasis on having fun and teamwork whilst fostering an environment that promotes development, growth, fire safety/awareness and social responsibility. This ensures that their brigade is prepared, capable and engaged now and into the future. “The opportunity to coach and mentor our cadet program allows our Cadet Program Leaders to further give back to our community. It’s already amazing to see the confidence boost from our aspiring cadets through their brief engagement and we are very much excited to see our cadets grow and progress into junior firefighters as they turn 16” Jelena ended. For those that missed the Cadet Open Day and are interested in joining in on the fun, contact NSWRFS – Llandilo Brigade on Facebook. r

How to Stretch Successfully – But Without Pain To stretch effectively, you should pretty much do the opposite of what most people do. That is, you should: 1. Stretch regularly (just once-twice a week will do), 2. Spend time on each stretch, 3. Use a slow deliberate stretching technique, 4. Avoid any pain, 5. Relax into the stretch, 6. Use regular and deep breathing, 7. Never force the stretch Technique: For a left hamstring stretch, bring your left leg onto a table (10-15cm higher than your knees; higher if you’re very flexible). Keep your left leg straight and draw your left foot toward you. Bend forward at the hip keeping your back straight. See if you can touch your toes or stretch past them, then come up/out of this ‘test’ stretch. Now bend your left arm at the elbow. Keeping your back straight, bend forward at the hip again till your left elbow rests on your left thigh and your back remains straight. Slide your elbow toward your left foot, until you feel a good stretch in your

left hamstrings (but no pain). Relax, breathe in and out deeply and regularly, wait until the stretch completely subsides and you’re comfortable at this position (may take 30 – 60 seconds, just be patient). Now slide your elbow further forward along your thigh until you again feel a strong stretch, but no pain. Stop there, repeat the same deep relaxed breathing until you cannot feel the stretch. Continue this for 4-6 cycles (more if you like). Once you’re happy with the number of stretching cycles you’ve completed, test how far your left fingers/hand moves past your toes now. You should find that you have significantly greater range of motion in your left hamstring than when you started. Now repeat the same for your right hamstrings. Note: people with lower back issues should stretch their hamstrings lying down to avoid straining their back. This technique allows you to gently fatigue the hamstring muscle-spindles. It takes a little more time, but only needs to be done once a week, and is likely to be much more successful long term and not painful!

FAITH – ST DAVIDS CHURCH LLANDILO Article Written + Submitted by: Rev John Hebblewhite A: Lot 257A Seventh Ave, Llandilo P: 4736 3592 Service Times: 10am each Sunday, with additional services held: 2pm on the Third Sunday + 8am on the Fourth Sunday

There are three ‘marks’ of Christianity. The measure of how far the individual and society at large accept and respond to those marks determines how life is embraced. First is Faith. It is accepted that Jesus, who was free of any determination in politics or religion, became to be worshipped as the Christ as it became obvious, he spoke with authority unknown in recorded history. In his resurrection, the early believers recognized within their concept of God the action of the Holy Trinity: The Father in the Son through the Holy Spirit. The traditional God ‘out there’ became in the flesh ‘God with us’. It is true faith that enables despair to be overcome when so much in life is depreciated. Second is Hope. Again, it is accepted that in Jesus the Christ we have a powerful hope that gives meaning to life. We are born to die but in itself death is the opening to being in God’s purpose. The created order continues to encourage our understanding. In the beauty of the created order, there is also the reality of death through disease, disaster, and man’s folly in exploitation and war. Hope discerns that ultimately the Creator’s purpose will become summed up when Christ Jesus returns to give judgement. The third is Charity. A much maligned and misused word often simply seen as giving money or something to a worthy cause. But charity is deeper than that. It is the ability to discern the reality of life. We had no choice as to our birth and charity recognizes the family of man: the huge variety of race, custom and belief. It is governed by the simple teaching of Jesus: ‘do unto others as you would have them do unto you’. Often not easy to practice! r Image: www.pixabay.com.au

Rats And Mice – Caution With Rat Bait Toxicity In Your Pet

It is cold and dark, so we spend more time indoors, but you won’t be the only one seeking shelter. As temperatures drop, mice and rats head indoors to search for food, and they might pick your house for their new residence. STOP! Most rat baits are really dangerous to pets. We have seen several rat bait ingestion in dogs recently, and with treatment they survive. Rat bait is a silent killer. Unlike snail bait which causes violent symptoms within minutes after ingestion, most rat bait takes 3-5 days before it starts to take effect in a pet. There are different kinds of rat bait available; the most common are anti-coagulant poisons that stop blood from clotting normally, resulting in excessive bleeding. The development of clinical signs is usually delayed for 3-7 days after the dog or cat

consumes the poison. Common signs of rat bait poisoning may include: • Obvious external signs of haemorrhage (dependent on where the bleeding is; for example bruising, bloody faeces or urine, nose bleeds, vomiting blood). • Lethargy • Weakness • Wobbliness • Loss of appetite • Distended abdomen from bleeding into the abdomen • Coughing, wheezing, or difficulty breathing from bleeding into the chest • Pale gums from anaemia • Bulging of eyes from bleeding behind the eyes • Sudden death with no obvious clinical signs can also occur. If you know that your pet has eaten rat bait, contact your veterinarian immediately. Vomiting can be induced to remove as much of the rat bait as possible and treatment can be started immediately. Rat bait kills rats, mice and your pet if they ingest them. Try more pet-friendly ways to get rid of vermin. Check out our website for more information. www.orchardhillsvet.com.au or join us on Facebook. We look forward to meeting you and your pets at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, and please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team. v Image: www.pixabay.com

Yep! Winter has arrived. It’s fresh, the air is crisp and oooh my frozen toes are now snuggled nicely into the handknitted socks my wonderful friend Betty made for me! Last month we saw music concerts back on the agenda, along with a number of other community events. While we enjoy the return of these long awaited festivities, it’s not without noticeable differences of our ‘new’ post-covid life....checking in, social distancing, smaller groups or masks in larger crowds. A number of these initiatives are definitely a step forward for our overall future wellness. Narelle continues on with last month’s topic of Domestic Family Violence, because it’s too important not to. Find more on this in ‘Parents Corner’. My dear Aunty celebrates 83 amazing years filled with memories and heart-warming treasures. As Aunty Bronwyn would say, ‘never stop believing in hope because miracles happen every day’. Time to catch up on all the latest happenings in Your Community News.
