Good Friday Service & Pancake Breakfast

Mosaic Jordan Springs Cricket Club have capped off a great year, after playing in their first official season in the Penrith junior and senior competitions. With four teams representing the local club, the Under 10’s White team are the first to qualify for the semi-finals, after finishing third in the season. The four teams that competed for the club for season 2019/2020 included two juniors (Under 10’s White and Under 10’s Black) and two seniors (Second Grade and Social). This was made up of 61 senior players (part time and full time) and 30 junior players who were registered this year. “I have enjoyed watching the development of the club in our first year of competition. Through practice and training, the kids have learned a lot about the game. Their knowledge has grown, and they have formed well as a team. The junior players have also learnt through the experience of playing, which has been great” said Jordan Springs Cricket Club’s Sunil Chhabra. “The family and friends within the club have been amazing with all their hard work helping out. Their help has been invaluable, and we appreciate all that they’ve done” he continued. Highlights in the club’s first season have included the standout performances from both the Under 10’s teams in the juniors, with the Under 10’s White team finishing third and the Under 10’s Black team finishing sixth out of 14 teams. Shubh Darji has played well for the Under 10’s White team, leading as their Captain. With the end of season presentation awards planned for late March/early April, the club will continue to play in the Winter. Their aim is to have four or five teams from within the club competing in their own competition, in preparation for season 2020/2021. “We would also like to thank Penrith City Council. They have started the construction of a new cricket pitch in Jordan Springs, that will become our home. Hopefully it will be ready in time for next season. We can’t wait” ended Sunil.

PARENTS CORNER

Article Written + Submitted by: Narelle Smith Family Practitioner E: handsheartsandminds@gmail.com Blog: https://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com/

We work in partnership with our parish, families and local secondary schools, Xavier College Llandilo, Caroline Chisholm College (girls) Glenmore Park, to provide quality Catholic schooling from Kindergarten to Year 12.

Kids Are a Work In Progress A child’s brain develops from the bottom-up. Certain parts of the brain are more active than other parts during a child’s development. They are still developing all of the parts of the brain but there are ‘hot spots’ at certain times in a child’s development. This brain activity has an impact on a child’s behaviour. Some of the things that they find difficult to do or understand, are a result of having a brain that continues to develop right up to the age of 25 years. There are periods of time where your child does not have the capacity for logic, reasoning, and thinking. There are periods of time where they struggle to control their emotions. There are periods of time where they do not have the capacity to understand that other people have thoughts and feelings of their own. And where they think that the universe revolves around them. These times require lots of understanding and patience. You will still set limits and boundaries but you will expect to repeat yourself many times. Many of the things that children do can be explained by research into the brain and child development. If your child is having tantrums, seeking attention, and not thinking things through within the normal age ranges for these behaviours, then in a strange way that’s good because they are developing as they should. All of this is happening while they are learning how to integrate their experiences, making sense of their world and their place in it, and learning language and culture. Kids are a work in progress, which is why parenting is ongoing and ever changing. The whole article is at https://handsheartsminds.wordpress. com/2013/05/11/a-quick-tour-through-the-inner-workings-ofyour-childs-brain/. If you have any concerns about your child’s development, please see a health professional. r

It's Showtime!

It’s on again - the 116th Annual Luddenham Show will be held on Saturday the 7th and Sunday the 8th of March at Luddenham Showground. Luddenham Show, known as ‘The Country Show,’ is traditionally the first Show in the lead up to the Sydney Royal Easter Show. Many, many months of hard work culminate for some of the best livestock and stage acts in Australia. With these ever-changing times, the Committee of Luddenham A.H & I Society are proud to keep the traditions of the district’s biggest annual event alive and well. Both days are ‘chock-a-block’ filled with entertainment and activities for the young, and the not so young alike. This year, they are helping to support those who have lost everything in the recent bush fires. They will be inviting people attending the Show to place donations in boxes, which will be distributed around the Showground. The money will be forwarded to the Rotary Club of Wallacia - Mulgoa Valley and 100 percent will go to the Rotary Club Bush Fire Appeal for distribution to those in the affected areas. Luddenham A.H & I Society will also be donating 5% of the Show profit to the Rotary Club Bush Fire Appeal. New in 2020 is the Wife Carrying Competition, Hay Bale Rolling and Gumboot Throwing. These three events are sure to be lots of fun to participate in and to watch. It’s showtime and all roads lead to “The Country Show”, that is the Luddenham Show! For more information, find them on Facebook, visit their website at www.luddenhamshow.com.au or call 4773 4378.

Zoey’s Helping Hand 8-year-old Zoey Hawke is not your average kidpreneur. The local student from Jordan Springs, sadly lost her friend Kellie to breast cancer last year. As a way of wanting to help and give back, she started her own business ‘Crafting for Kellie by Zoey Hawke’, making handmade necklaces and bracelets and raising money for breast cancer research and awareness. Zoey’s necklaces and bracelets can be purchased with a donation of your choice and there are no prices. 100% of the donations given for her jewellery will go to the National

Breast Cancer Foundation. She has already handmade over 100 items and raised over $1,200 for breast cancer research. This includes $300 that was raised in just half an hour at a charity event last year! Adding to this, Zoey also had her long hair cut off in June last year to help make wigs for kids with cancer. This year, she has plans to raise further funds to help find a cure for breast cancer and her family are looking to assist with a car rally team. Zoey is also continuing to sell her bracelets and necklaces through her business Facebook page. “When Zoey started her business, Crafting for Kellie by Zoey Hawke, she insisted on making everything herself without any help. This has been her project and she has been driven by this” said Karia Hawke, Zoey’s mum to the Jordan Springs Gazette. “We are incredibly proud of Zoey. She’s a kind and sharing kid that wants to help others. We have no doubt she will make a difference in her lifetime” ended Karia. If you would like to support Zoey and her amazing work, visit her Facebook page ‘Crafting for Kellie by Zoey Hawke’. r Feature Article: [Cover] Zoey displaying her amazing creations [Above] Zoey’s handmade necklaces and bracelets | Images: Karia Hawke

Supporting the Firies through Art

The recent bush fires and the devastation that it brought to the country affected us all. Local artist, Saqlain Binte Saleh from Ropes Crossing wanted to help those that protect our lives and did this by painting and auctioning off her artwork to raise funds for the Rural Fire Service. Her artwork, which illustrated fire fighters battling a fire, was auctioned off in January this year and funds were raised for Shanes Park Rural Fire Brigade. “After seeing the horror of the bush fires on the news, I wanted to help. Using acrylic on canvas, I tried to capture the emotions and imaginations of what it must have been like for the fire fighters during this time and painted an artwork to auction off” said Saqlain. Saqlain has been painting for over 25 years. She decided to take her hobby more seriously in 2017, when her husband and her friend Debbie encouraged her to paint more and to pass on her knowledge to children through teaching art classes. She soon started ‘Paint with Saqlain’. “I enjoy teaching children how to express themselves and their own ideas through art. It’s wonderful. “With my own artwork, I love painting portraits with acrylics and sketching with charcoal as well as trying different mediums when I can. I use nature and bright colours in my themes. A lot of my inspiration comes from taking landscape photos during my travels overseas” she explained. Saqlain is also a member of the Holroyd Arts and Crafts Society, where she meets with fellow artists to share her work and ideas. For more information, visit ‘Paint with Saqlain’ on Facebook.

There is a magnificent photo of deep space taken by the Hubble telescope, which clearly indicates that to date only a minute area of space has been explored. Some have given the photo the title ‘a glimpse of infinity’. Here lies the exciting and amazing challenge for all sciences and theology to search for deeper meaning and understanding. Locked into the meaning of Christian worship is that reality of space, but also the way of encouraging our style of life and convictions and this is best shared when the individual meets with others in the service of Holy Communion. Conviction is affirmed of the value of truth, justice, courage and honesty to which we are obligated. So, it is in Jesus we find the basis and meaning of that obligation. As such, it means involving ourselves in the reality of life. It can mean taking risks in relying on our own depths, on other people and on the way things happen. We don’t need to be starry eyed and unrealistic and to suppose we shall never be let down as we open ourselves to this obligation. Jesus himself was vulnerable and suffered. His death placed the possibility of being let down at the heart of the Christian’s faith. But behind the ignorance, fear, selfishness in us, God is at work bringing god out of evil as after the cross came the resurrection: behind death there is life. As such, in the service of Holy Communion (Eucharist / Mass) the death and resurrection of Jesus are celebrated. In that Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again within the service eating and drinking wine and the orientation of our values and understanding and setting our compass in Christ is reinforced. In these elements of bread and wine, we eat by faith the body and Blood confirming that our life in its fullness is in Christ.

The Club was formed under the Probus values of supporting and promoting Friendship, Fellowship and Fun in retirement. We welcome new members from Jordan Springs and surrounding suburbs. Our monthly lunch for February was held at the newly refurbished Peachtree Hotel, Penrith, with 30 people turning up for an enjoyable meal and social catch up. The planned venue for March is a Tuesday lunch at O’Donoghues Irish Pub in Emu Plains. The February 25th meeting had a guest speaker from Guardian Funerals talking on services they provide, including pre-paid offerings. The March 24th meeting will be our 2020 AGM, where the committee for the coming 12 months will be formally elected. Nominations for committee positions closed at the February meeting. Members can look forward to an exciting program featuring interesting guest speakers, monthly meetings, the opportunity to travel locally or around the world and enjoy exclusive discounts through the Probus Member Benefits Scheme including access to exclusive Probus Travel Insurance, developing new interests and staying active. Planned events for the year include Watsons Bay for lunch, Mudgee Getaway Cottages (4 nights), Bundeena Ferry and lunch, Camden Historic Tour (coach) and planning is continuing towards an interstate trip. The Jordan Springs Probus Club meets at the Jordan Springs Community Hub on the 4th Tuesday of every month, 9:30am for a 10:00am start. Hello Autumn! As we slide into March we welcome the news that water restrictions will be wound back to level 1. There’s no denying we’ve played witness to nature’s wildest extremes, from bushfire to heavy downpours causing floods.......... all within the first 45 days of the year. One can only wonder how the rest of the year will play out. Here at the District Gazette ‘We Live. Love.Local’. If you have a local good news story to share we would love to hear from you! Why not sit back, have a good read, catch up on all the latest and enjoy ‘Your Community News.’ ‘Whatever you want to do, do it! You only have so many tomorrows”.
