Here Comes PENRITH MONOPOLY The foot of the mountains is home to an abundance of iconic locations loved by locals, and now the region is being immortalised with its very own official PENRITH MONOPOLY board. From March, Penrith residents and visitors will be able to play the world’s most popular board game in a way that pays tribute to all things Penrith. From now until February, fans can voice which locations they would like to see featured on the board via the official PENRITH MONOPOLY Facebook page or by email. The edition will see locally themed squares replace Mayfair and Park Lane from the original London MONOPOLY board and include a customised ‘Community Chest’ and ‘Chance’ playing cards, making the entire game a truly Penrith experience. Winning Moves, manufacturers of the official Penrith version of MONOPOLY under license from Hasbro, say the game will be sold through exclusive local

businesses. Dale Hackett, representative from Winning Moves and Penrith local said: “Finally, we have the privilege to bring this globally loved game to the city that I grew up in. We want to ensure that Penrith MONOPOLY is an accurate portrayal of what locals love about the city, so we would love for everyone to get on board and send us their recommendations of what they would like to see included. Anything and everything is up for consideration – from the Nepean River and Penrith Lakes, to Penrith Panthers and Westfields – so get involved! “This edition will be everything you love about the traditional board, adapted in a way that Penrith residents will enjoy for generations to come. There will also be opportunities in the coming months for schools and individuals alike to get involved in the creation of this game, so stay tuned for more exciting details” Dale adds. MONOPOLY first hit the shelves in 1935 – since then it has been played by more than 1 billion people. Today, it is played in 114 countries and enjoyed in over 47 different languages. The new MONOPOLY: Penrith Edition will be available from March from select local businesses across the region. r

FAITH – ST DAVIDS CHURCH LLANDILO Article Written + Submitted by: Rev John Hebblewhite A: Lot 257A Seventh Ave, Llandilo P: 4736 3592 Service Times: 10am each Sunday, with additional services held: 2pm on the Third Sunday + 8am on the Fourth Sunday

Dogma and dogmatic have become, over the years, two words that are used to downgrade thoughts and ideas: “I don’t want to be dogmatic”. Dogma coming from the Greek language means a decision or a resolution passed by a constituted body. The first Christian dogma on record was the decision of the early followers of the Faith meeting in Jerusalem relating to conversion to the Faith by non- Jewish people. A minute from the meeting notes; “it seems good to us to lay upon you no greater burden than what is necessary”. So, very quickly the early Church was faced with the demand for rulings. As such, a dogma is neither more nor less than a ruling on a disputed point. It was in 325CE that the Bishops in council had to decide was it, or was it not in accordance with the New Testament and faith of the Church to teach the convert that Jesus the Christ was not the incarnation of God, but a created being such as we are. The answer is very important and is not a question of indifference, as it was argued that the record of St Phillip asking Jesus when they met following Jesus’s execution by crucifixion, Philip was asking the impossible “show us the Father”. Down through the centuries, the Christian faith has stood by the answer given to Phillip by Jesus the Christ: “How long have I been with you and yet you do not know me Phillip. He that has seen me has seen the Father”. Thus, the central dogma (teaching) of the church, the most stupendous and sometimes bewildering proposition, is a good illustration of what is meant by dogma in affirming that God showed himself in a human person at a particular time in history.

Jordan Springs Probus Club The Tuesday lunch for October was held at the Waterstone Grill in St Marys Leagues Club. A group of 28 members enjoyed lunch and a general catch-up. The December lunch has still to be planned. Our regular monthly meetings are now back on a regular basis, with Penrith Council having reopened community halls subject to some COVID requirements. The speaker for October was Norma Thorburn from St Marys Historical Society with an informative presentation on the history and impact of the Bennett Wagons. The committee continues to plan for the eventual lifting/ relaxing of restrictions and the return to a more normal monthly agenda. This ensures members can look forward to an exciting program featuring interesting guest speakers, monthly meetings, the opportunity to travel locally or around the world and enjoy exclusive discounts through the Probus Member Benefits Scheme including access to exclusive Probus Travel Insurance, developing new interests and staying active. Future planned events for the coming twelve months will include Berrima Surveyor General Inn for lunch and a day trip, Watsons Bay for lunch, Mudgee Getaway Cottages (4 nights), Bundeena Ferry and lunch, Camden Historic Tour (coach) and planning is continuing towards an interstate trip. The Jordan Springs Probus Club normally meets at the Jordan Springs Community Hub on the 4th Tuesday of every month, at 9:30am for a 10:00am start. For more information, contact Brian on 0402 699611 or via email at jordansprings@probusclubs.com.au. Visit our website at probussouthpacific.org/microsites/ jordansprings.

Bringing Back the Music We can all agree that 2020 has been a difficult year for us. The live music industry has been hit particularly hard, with many unable to work due to the pandemic. Jordan Springs’ Lynsey Mackay is one such musician who is determined to rise above and finish the year on a high. “This year started out very promising, with lots of fun gigs booked at the Easter Show, wine festivals, weddings and various venues. I was working at a gig on March 13th on the Friday evening and by the following Monday all my work for the next 6 months had cancelled” explained Lynsey. As a solo performer, only now has work slowly started coming back in, with Lynsey busking at the Luddenham Country Markets every fortnight. There have also been opportunities for her music students she teaches, “This has been fantastic for my students as they have been performing songs in my breaks at the Markets. This gives them a little performance experience and I’m so thankful for this ongoing work”. With more venues booking her services, including Penrith City Council with their local music initiative ‘Matchmaker’ this month, things are looking up. As a music tutor, face-to-face teaching was replaced by online classes, which she embraced, “I taught a whole term on Zoom, which was challenging but still workable. It was interesting to see how the different personalities responded to this”. During Term 2, Lynsey set up an online video submission music competition called Musicale Challenge, which had 4 industry professional judges. “We had over 160 entries and were sponsored by High Street Music in Penrith. It was a great way for students to get outside feedback from professionals without the nerve-wracking live performance and was a fantastic goal to work on. We had so much positive feedback and I’m going to run it again next year” Lynsey said. Lynsey now hopes to develop group keyboard classes as well as preschool music classes called Teenyboppers in Jordan Springs next year. r Lynsey Mackay behind the piano | Image: Josh Vincent

Contest Shines Light on Diwali Homes and businesses across Blacktown City are about to be lit up. Nominations have now opened for this year’s Blacktown City’s Diwali Lights Competition. The ancient Hindu festival of Diwali celebrates the victory of light over darkness, with observers around the world lighting lamps and candles in and around homes and temples. These lights are said to help the goddess Lakshmi - goddess of wealth - find her way to homes and businesses. Blacktown City’s annual Diwali Lights Competition invites residents to celebrate their culture by decorating their homes. Blacktown City Mayor Tony Bleasdale OAM said, “This is a wonderful cultural event that lights up our streets and homes across the City. “Blacktown City is one of the most culturally diverse cities in Australia and is home to more than 83,000 people of Indian descent. “In addition to prizes for the best individual properties, we have a special category where we recognise the City’s ‘Best Street’. The title acknowledges neighbours who come together in the spirit of Diwali to create a festive and culture-filled atmosphere in the street they each call home”. To be eligible for the title of Best Street, you must have a minimum of 3 decorated properties entered in the same street. $2500 in cash prizes is available for the best decorated properties across Blacktown City’s 5 Wards. Preliminary judging and photographing of entries will take place from Monday 9 November to Thursday 12 November with the final round of judging taking place on Sunday 15 November. The competition is organised by Blacktown City Council in association with Indian Link Media Group to celebrate the annual Diwali Festival. Listening Can Be Difficult For Kids

It seems like the kids don’t listen or do as they are asked. Sometimes we as adults need to be clearer in our communication. Calm is also handy, as the calmer we are, the calmer our kids are. Parenting Strategies That Tend Not To Work... • When we focus on telling our kids ‘don’t’, ‘stop’, ‘no’, ‘quit’, and ‘not’, sometimes they disregard the ‘don’t’ etc. Or, sometimes, the ‘don’t’ can be like a dare. • Telling the child what not to do, for example, ‘don’t jump on the lounge’, ‘don’t hit your brother’. • Yelling across the room. • Yelling, hitting, name calling, put-downs. • Asking a question if you want the child to do something, for example, ‘would you...?’, ‘can you…?’, ‘do you…?’, ‘will you…?’ Your Challenge Use clear calm instructions to give kids instructions and encourage them to listen: • Say child’s name, get close, get eye contact, touch child gently; • Tell the child what to do OR • Tell the child what s/he is doing wrong and what to do instead. REMEMBER to say ‘thanks for listening’ or ‘thanks for doing as I asked’. If the child does not do as asked after two requests, issue a Consequence. It is often a good idea to give the child a calming down skill in your Clear, Calm Instruction. Example “you are shouting at me, (pause) take a deep breath and think about how you can speak to me in a calm way and with respect”. Wait calmly and quietly for the child’s response. When the child has spoken with you calmly, say “thank you for being calm and respectful”. Parents often say that this strategy is very simple but the hardest thing for them is to be calm. Your high emotional reaction is related to your values. Values are essential to guide your life, but are you going to coach/guide your child in values or force them down their throat? You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. To calm yourself take some deep breaths, and think of a happy memory (for example, a time when the child was cute or loving, etc). The aim in any parenting strategy is to teach your child how to be better, and parents have to role model that. r

Here are a few of our favourites! Platform T8 Right next to Quest Apartments and opposite the Penrith Station, Platform T8 brings caffeinated joy to train commuters, hotel guests, locals, and those walking by with their fourlegged friends. The café serves coffee, breakfast, brunch, and lunch eat in or takeaway each day. The puppachinos made here are attracting dogs from far and wide, just check out their Facebook and Instagram for pet paparazzi shots. Percy Plunkett With delicious food and a great atmosphere, Percy Plunkett hosts visiting pooches in their courtyard area. Even better, doggie treats are available. The East Bank Nepean River Restaurant Complex The East Bank Nepean River Restaurant complex welcomes patrons to bring their canine companions to dine with them in any of the outdoor seating areas on the lower level of the precinct. While you are here, take a walk across the road to check out the Great River Walk along the Nepean River. Cassandra’s on the Park Cassandra’s on the Park is a funky café on Queen St, St Marys with spacious outdoor seating, perfect for an outing with the whole family, dog, and all. The café has all the expected breakfast to lunch options as well as a few speciality dishes, juices, and smoothies. It is not limited to just these few, there are many more options of Cafés welcoming dogs throughout Penrith making it a fun day for the entire household, not just the humans. If we’ve missed your favourite dog-friendly venue just let us know. Visit Penrith strongly encourages you to read the guidelines around social distancing in public places before planning your visit. The Passionate Baker

When you think of artisan bakeries, places like The Rocks, Leichhardt, and Newtown in Sydney spring to mind. Did you know that we have our very own artisan micro-bakery hidden away right here in Ropes Crossing? The Bradley Street Baker, started by local Anthony Adam, began late last year and it is already proving popular with lovers of sourdough bread. “I started The Bradley Street Baker only recently. I have been a baker since finishing school in the early 00’s and have always baked some of my own favourites at home. Just before Christmas last year, I had to give up a different pastime, which freed up some weekend time to scale up home baking” said Anthony Adam, head baker. “I have always wanted to own/run a bakery/cafe, but never had the capital to launch. By creating a micro-bakery, it has allowed us to bake on a manageable scale, and it can fit with the rest of our commitments (or in other words, our day jobs!). You never know, someday we might even be able to take it full scale” added Anthony The Bradley Street Baker specialises in artisan sourdough breads – consisting of traditional white loaves and baguettes, flavour combinations such as caramelised garlic and olive and parmesan and cracked pepper and two wholesome loaves which are seeds and buckwheat and dark rye. “Right now, we are working on some sweet products. We’re aiming to introduce a sourdough fruit loaf as well as some sourdough croissants/pastries after Christmas” explained Anthony to the Jordan Springs Gazette. With the smell of freshly baked bread filling the air, and the smile on Anthony’s face, it’s clear to see his passion for baking shows. “I enjoy everything about baking my own products. It’s a creative release, really. Whilst satisfying, my industry career has led to less time ‘on tools’. Getting back to basics and making these products by hand, using a traditional slow process re-centres me. I guess you could say it keeps me in touch with my roots” he ended. You can find the bakery on Facebook or Instagram @thebradleystreetbaker, or by visiting their website at www. thebradleystreetbaker.com.au. r Feature Article: [Cover] Anthony Adam (The Bradley Street Baker) [Above] Some of The Bradley Street Baker’s delicious products | Images: Michelle Gurney

Managing Editor Belinda Sanders Writer / Sales Cim Sanders Writer / Educational Consultant Sara Drebber

We are at the pointy end of the year. Historically, November is the nose dive into all the upcoming Christmas festivities. This year has definitely been a challenging one, and it is without doubt that the Christmas Season will carry with it significant impacts marking the year that was. It’s important we try to come together and consolidate the bumpy journey’s we have all experienced in one way or another and celebrate that we made it through, that we’re here to tell the stories. There are plenty of great new things happening in and across our community, despite the impacts of COVID through the rubble, beautiful things are beginning to blossom. We have plenty of great reading this month, why not find yourself a nice spot in the garden with a cuppa and your favourite local paper? ‘The happiest people in life are the givers, not the getters’ Enjoy Your Community News.
