More Than a Walk With Greater Sydney in lockdown, many people have taken to walking around the local community for their daily exercise routines. People are discovering walking tracks and trails right in their own backyard that they never knew about. Ropes Crossing Walking Group was formed last year, during the pandemic, as a way for residents to share some of their favourite destinations whilst keeping fit. The group was formed in November 2020 by then resident Maria Tania. Wayne Barker took over the administration in August with Maria moving. It now boasts over 100 members and growing on Facebook. “Since taking over, we have been in lockdown. The only activity that we have, consequentially, participated in is walking on our own or with a loved one,” said Wayne. “We have had a challenge on the page for September. There was a fundraiser for TKCP (The Kids’ Cancer Project), an organization that raises funds for research into children’s cancer as well as providing support for individual families. We could walk, run, or roll for 90kms. I can foresee group members taking part in the City2Surf and Seven Bridges. Once the lockdown is over, we can really get back up and running. I can envisage treasure hunts through and around Ropes Crossing” he continued. Some of Wayne’s favourite places to walk in the local community include the footpath around Ropes Crossing (excluding Ropes Crossing Boulevard) which is 5kms long and Wianamatta Regional Park. It’s not unusual to find emus and kangaroos on that route. “What I enjoy most about being a part of the group is the idea of creating a friendly, positive community. I have been an ardent walker for quite several years. I have always been amazed at the number of times I walked past people, going in opposite directions, without even a friendly head nod or wave. There is a saying, ‘if you go out to find friends, they are few and far between. If you go out to be a friend, they are everywhere’” Wayne replied. If you are a local member of the community and would like to join Ropes Crossing Walking Group, search for them on Facebook. r

POLICE NEWS

Four Arborists Charged Police have charged four arborists after they allegedly returned to the Lake Macquarie area, breaching the Public Health Order for the second time in the same month. On Wednesday (1 September 2021), police received reports from members of the public via Crime Stoppers about a group of arborists who had been canvassing the Lake Macquarie area for work. The following day (Thursday 2 September 2021) police spoke to the men, who told police they’d been working in the region on weekdays and returning to Greater Sydney on weekends, including to LGAs of concern. Further inquiries revealed one of the men had provided inaccurate information to obtain a Service NSW permit to leave Greater Sydney and enter Regional NSW, another man did not have a permit at all, and other employees hadn’t had a COVID-19 test prior to leaving Greater Sydney as required under the Public Health Order. Seven men were subsequently issued with PINs totalling $33,000 and directed to return to their homes in Greater Sydney. About 2.30pm on Thursday 9 September 2021, police received information that a group of six arborists were doorknocking homes at Cardiff. Officers from Lake Macquarie Police District attended and spoke with the group before four of the men were arrested and taken to Toronto Police Station. They were subsequently issued Court Attendance Notices for not comply with noticed direction and not ensure true and accurate information provided to Service NSW. Police will allege the 41-year-old from Kingswood, 25-year-old from Leumeah, 57-year-old from Colyton and 37-year-old from Whalan had previously been issued with PINs for breaching the Public Health Order. Police will further allege the men were operating under a different business name and had removed all company identification from their vehicles. They are due to appear at Toronto Local Court on Tuesday 2 November 2021. A fifth man – a 33-year-old from Ropes Crossing – was

issued with PINs totalling $6,000 for breaching the Public Health Order and providing inaccurate information in his permit application. Investigations remain ongoing into the sixth man.

Man in Court after Pursuit – Llandilo A man appeared in court last month, after a pursuit in Sydney’s north-west. About 12.10am on Saturday 4 September 2021, officers from the State Crime Command’s Raptor Squad were patrolling the Cranebrook area when they stopped the driver of a Ford Falcon travelling on Ninth Avenue, Llandilo. As officers approached the window of the driver – and sole occupant of the vehicle – he allegedly accelerated away from them. A pursuit was initiated and continued through several streets in the suburb, before being terminated due to safety concerns. A short time later, police deployed road spikes at the intersection of Stony Creek Road and Eighth Avenue. The man allegedly continued driving for a short distance, entering Ropes Crossing where he crashed into two parked cars on Saltbush Court, and a letter box and tree in a front yard on Marshall Avenue. After coming to a stop, the man allegedly ran from the vehicle and was followed by the crew of PolAir 3 before being located behind a garbage bin in a driveway on Bluebell Crescent. He was arrested by police with assistance from the Dog Unit and taken to Mt Druitt Police Station, where he was charged with police pursuit - not stop - drive dangerously, drive motor vehicle during disqualification period, two counts of not give particulars to owner of damaged property, and goods suspected stolen in/on premises (not m/v). He appeared in Parramatta Bail Court on Saturday 4 September 2021, where he was formally refused bail to appear before Penrith Local Court on Monday 6 September 2021. Inquiries continue.

Local Pays It Forward for Workers The current pandemic has seen our frontline, health care and essential workers working hard every day to keep us all safe. Local small business HJN Grazings wanted to thank them for all that they do, so Owner Hailey Nelson introduced a ‘pay it forward’ initiative, where members of the community could purchase grazing boxes that are donated to the workers. “Pay it forward is a way to show our ongoing support and appreciation and to give back to those who give to us time and time again. We have asked our community to come together to help frontline, health care and essential workers during these crucial times. They have been stretched to their limits and pushed harder than ever before” explained Hailey to the Jordan Springs Gazette. “We made the decision to pay it forward to our community to let them know that their hard work does not go unnoticed or unappreciated. Their efforts throughout this pandemic are honourable and they should be recognized for that” she continued. The initiative has seen the community come together to donate over 500 boxes to our workers. The grazing boxes include three different types of cheeses, two types of meats, dip, crackers, fresh fruit and of course a chocolate treat! “The recipients of the boxes have been so overwhelmed and grateful to have received them, and even shared some happy tears. A pick me up they were most definitely in need of” Hailey replied. The business has plans to introduce another initiative around the Christmas period. “We are planning to give back to our homeless and families that have been doing it tough for these past few months in lockdown” she ended. v

Woolworths Fresh Discovery Tours

Food

Kids

Woolworths has gone digital with its popular Fresh Food Kids Discovery Tours, with a new look to the education program set to provide more opportunities for Jordan Springs students to learn where their fresh food comes from. Years 5 and 6 primary school students can now be the first to experience the digital program. Woolworths Fresh Food Kids Discovery Tour was the first national program of its kind when it began in 2018, and to date more than 260,000 Australian school and early learning centre students have participated in the in-store experience. Designed in collaboration with educators, food scientists and nutritionists, the program also allows students the ability to virtually step onto an Australian farm to learn how fresh food is grown and meet some of the farmers who supply fruit and vegetable to their Woolworths stores. The redesign comes as new Woolworths’ research shows that less than half of the children in NSW and ACT surveyed aged 6-14 could correctly identify a leek, apricot, or a beetroot. It also highlighted a lack of understanding on where fresh food originates with many kids having never visited a crop farm. Woolworths Jordan Springs Group Manager, Samantha Doueihi said: “As Today’s Fresh Food People, we’re committed to helping local families make healthier and easier decisions when it comes to their lifestyles. “A big way we can do that is by educating younger Aussies about where food comes from, the food production process, Aussie suppliers and growers, and the need to support a sustainable future. Our new Fresh Food Kids Discovery Tour achieves all this using technology to create a fun learning experience. “Taking the Fresh Food Kids Discovery Tours online also enables teachers to bring the curriculum virtually to life, even if students are learning from home. Students can discover the importance of how their fresh food makes it into local stores and helps them build a healthier relationship with fruits and vegetables”. Like the in-store Fresh Food Kids Discovery Tours ‘book a tour’ program, schools interested in participating in the new digital program can request a free classroom kit that contains all the materials and lesson plans required, along with access to a supporting Fresh Food Kids Discovery Tours app. The roll out of the new digital program will start with Years 5 and 6 and be available to Kindergarten to Year 4 from early 2022. To find out more about Woolworths Fresh Food Kids Digital Discovery Tour program and how to request a classroom kit, visit www.woolworths.com.au/discoverytours. r The program is available to Years 5 and 6 students now | Image/Article: Woolworths

Construction Begins On Upgrade at Cranebrook High School

Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith has announced that local students can look forward to benefiting from new purpose-built facilities, with construction work now underway on the upgrade at Cranebrook High School. Plans for the upgrade include delivering a new building with three new classrooms, a shared learning space, a seminar room and a covered outdoor learning area (COLA). Construction is expected to be completed in mid-2022. Stuart Ayres said these great new facilities will benefit not just the school but the wider Cranebrook community. “We want students to have the best education possible, and providing new and modern facilities gives them those opportunities,” Stuart Ayres said. “I look forward to watching construction progress and seeing the upgrades finished.” Minister for Education Sarah Mitchell said providing high-quality school facilities is a key part of the NSW Government’s commitment to building on the state’s world class education system, and prioritising public schools. “I’m very pleased that the NSW Government is delivering this project for Cranebrook students ,” Ms Mitchell said. The Development Application (DA) for the project was recently approved by Penrith City Council and construction has commenced. Site establishment was recently completed, which included the installation of site facilities, temporary fencing and the establishment of environment controls. Keeping Children Safe Online: Who Are They Talking to? In a time when social distancing is key to addressing the evolving public health issue of COVID-19, the internet allows children to learn, connect and create. However, going online is not risk-free. This month, we continue our three-part series on keeping children safe online. On the 3rd of September, ten additional police officers joined the Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad to address a rise in online sex crimes against children. In a statement released by the NSW Police, Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad Commander Detective Superintendent Jayne Doherty attributed this concerning trend to children spending additional time at home online unsupervised. “The best tool to ensure your child’s safety is you. Make sure they know they can tell you about anything that makes them uncomfortable and that any app, game or social media platform where they speak to other people can put them at risk,” Det Supt Doherty said. Many seemingly innocuous apps and games include chat functions which allow anyone in the world to contact your child. Before installing any app or game, do your research and ensure you maximise privacy settings. The Carly Ryan Foundation provides detailed, up-to-date information for parents on specific apps and games. These guides include step-by-step instructions on how to operate configure privacy settings on the apps. These free fact sheets can be downloaded from carlyryanfoundation.com. In addition to maximising privacy settings on apps, you need to supervise children when they access the internet. It is best to always supervise small children (under 5 years old) physically when they use internet-enabled devices. Primary aged school children should be encouraged to ask you to access devices, and you need to know where they are and what they are doing when they log on onto the web. I highly discourage allowing primary aged school children to access the internet in their bedroom with the door closed. As children grow older, regular conversations about online safety continue to be essential. For more information, visit the eSafety Commissioner’s website on https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents.

Local Resident Name Citizen of the Year Jordan Springs resident Kristine Gauci has been named as the Citizen of the Year in Penrith City Council’s inaugural Local Celebration Awards. Kristine is the Co-Founder and Chair of Our Community Cares, a local charity based in Penrith. She was nominated by her daughter Samantha Jarnet for the Award. Samantha volunteers in the charity along with her husband and four children. “The Citizen of the Year Award from Penrith City Council affords our charity more credibility in the eyes of the public. It also gives the volunteers of Our Community Cares a share in a huge thank you for a job well done” said Kristine to the Jordan Springs Gazette. Our Community Cares was founded by Kristine and Melissa Spurrier in 2013. The charity provides several different services to the local community. Pre-COVID, this included taking high school students to aged care facilities to visit the elderly, providing gifts to aged residents, and those in facilities that have nobody visiting them for Christmas. “Over the years, we have purchased chemotherapy chairs for the Nepean Cancer Care Centre to ensure the patients could undertake treatment in comfort, three stem cell chairs for the Cancer Ward at the Nepean Hospital, three lowline beds for the Aged Ward, upgraded the Dementia Ward into a Sensory Ward, purchased personal fans for Cancer patients at the NCCC and a music library and players for the NCCC. “The charity donates large volumes of food, when the need arises, to local kitchens that feed the homeless and vulnerable. We have started to make lunches for the kids at a local high school that go without lunch every day and help at the CBD in putting together hampers for families during COVID. Our latest program will have volunteers visiting needy aged and ill people’s homes and doing small jobs for them – our Tool Belt Program” she explained. “People in Penrith give back to the community and take pride in helping others where they can. It’s heart-warming to be part of that mentality” Kristine ended.

HEALTH MATTERS

Article Written + Submitted by: Andreas Klein Nutritionist + Remedial Therapist from Beautiful Health + Wellness P: 0418 166 269

Can Good Diet Benefit Migraine and Regular Headache? Migraines are often triggered by something. In a study by Kelman (2007) patients listed 15 frequent migraine triggers. Clearly, the majority of these are diet/lifestyle related factors, which means we can do something about them. 7 of 15 factors can be directly or indirectly influenced by diet. Food, not eating and alcohol intake are dietary choices. Sleep disturbances (think zinc insufficiency), neck-pain, stress-perception, and hormonal factors can be influenced to varying degrees by diet. Four factors: smoking, exercise, sexual activity, and sleeping late, are clearly lifestyle choices. Only 4 factors, weather, perfumes/odours, lights, and heat are environmental, yet these too could be controlled/ avoided. To illustrate the powerful effect of diet on migraine and headache symptoms, let’s review the case of a 39-year-old woman who attended the clinic suffering 2.5 days of migraine-headaches, plus 4.5 days of non-migraine headaches weekly. She was struggling to work and regularly taking Maxalt (rizatriptan), Nurofen, Valium, and aspirin, along with MigraineCare (a nutritional supplement) to deal with symptoms. The patient consumed alcohol regularly, had considerable gastrointestinal issues, and extremely painful and tight muscles, yet was fit and exercised vigorously daily. Note: although exercise can reduce migraine frequency, intensity, and duration, in a cruel twist, exercise can promote non-migraine headaches, and increase symptoms of muscle-pain and tightness, especially if diet is inadequate. The patient wanted to undertake only dietary change and didn’t want any deeper remedial therapy (although this would have been beneficial) as she was particularly sensitive to any type of pain. Thus, this case is an excellent example of the large influence simple diet/ lifestyle changes ‘by themselves’ can have on headache and migraine symptoms. We analysed the patient’s current dietary pattern via diet diary, identified shortcomings, then prescribed a healthful eating pattern, plus key dietary supplements. The patient agreed to abstain from alcohol, and moderated exercise to reasonable levels. At a follow up appointment after 5 months on the new dietary protocol, the patient indicated that she had suffered no migraines and just one regular headache and required no medications at any time in the previous month. Her muscle pain and tightness had improved significantly as had gastrointestinal symptoms. r

FAITH – ST DAVIDS CHURCH LLANDILO Article Written + Submitted by: Rev John Hebblewhite A: Lot 257A Seventh Ave, Llandilo P: 4736 3592 Service Times: 10am each Sunday, with additional services held: 2pm on the Third Sunday + 8am on the Fourth Sunday The current situation in which we find ourselves shows how we are all subject to our way of life, which is determined by many factors. Many are caught up with disability which can be from congenital causes, mental illness or from a variety of causes such as dealing with the effects of a vicious virus. Many are caught up in meeting the situations in which they find themselves that seriously depreciates their well- being. A mark for people, who in no matter what life situation they find themselves in, is discipline. Adjusting to and determining outcomes that are beneficial to life is governed by this mark. Discipline, if honest and just, while often placing strong demands for response, is a necessary and vital aspect of living. The basic factors of honesty, respect for others and the focus on the good, makes not only the individual but also the community at large, a measure of what could be. Sadly, what is often in place is the opposite. Self-satisfaction, immorality, greed, and some of the destructive forces that are found both within families and the community in general. Discipline does not demand in isolation. It always has a purpose and a given end. Ask any athlete or student. Being a parent requires a discipline that seeks the purpose of seeing a child reach responsible adulthood. So, discipline is a constant in any aspect of life. But what of failure? This is a factor that is seen so often in life. The person suffering from alcoholism for example, is aware of the effects of failure. The student who fails an exam that determines the future knows the sting of failure. But in overcoming failure a new lease of life is given. Trust placed in God through Jesus Christ and in the belief that the Holy Spirit is with us, a wonderful dimension can be explored and activated which gives meaning to “discipline”.

When the Going Gets Tough, the Tough Get Golfing Sydney has been in lockdown since 26th June and pretty much every sport has been shut down. Every sport that is, except golf. Golf may seem like an opportunity for a leisurely amble in the sunshine, which it is. Golf is also a serious sport with a prize pool of over $US46million for the PGA Tour. Apart from the riches available to the best in the sport, there are lots of other reasons to play golf, and this is why Nathan Duiguid, Physiotherapist at The Healthy Body Company in Jordan Springs, has been working hard on lowering his handicap. “My Dad runs a pro shop at Wallacia Golf and Country Club, and I grew up around golf. I didn’t really start playing until I went to Uni but when COVID hit, and I could no longer play touch footy and my focus in dropping my handicap sharpened”. We know that walking is great for you. Walking outdoors in nature is better and golf presents the opportunity to do both, with purpose. In addition, golf is a solitary sport that does not have to be played alone. Even under lockdown rules, we have been permitted to play with one other person, so a little socialisation has been possible. “I enjoy the opportunity to play with my colleagues and friends. Lockdown and rules at work have meant less opportunity for playing with others, but even being able to get out on the course with one mate has been great for my mental health”. Golf has a reputation of taking up too much time. This might be true for those who choose to do the 18-hole option, but the beauty of the sport is that you can choose. You also don’t need to be at the course to practice. Lots of the fundamental skills can be practiced with backyard drills. Contrary to the reputation of being boring because it is the same each time you play, a golfer will strongly counter that argument. Nathan says, “The conditions are never the same, the company is never the same, and your golf is certainly never the same. Every single round of golf is different and that’s why I love it”. How much has Nathan improved his handicap during lockdown? It has dropped by 9 shots and is now down to 13 which sees him nearly at A-Grade level. Happy golfing everyone. r Nathan in action on the golf course | Image: Nathan Duiguid | Article: The Healthy Body Company

PAWS A WHILE

Article Written + Submitted by: Camille Brandt from Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital A: 49 Wentworth Rd, Orchard Hills P: 4736 2027

Thank You to Our Wonderful Clients Camille and the staff at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital would like to say a huge thank you to our wonderful clients for their understanding and support during the COVID-19 lockdowns. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we have been performing contactless consultations – this means that a nurse meets you in the carpark and collects your pet, then takes them inside to be seen by the veterinarian, while you wait in the carpark. This is done to accommodate for social distancing and to ensure that we remain safe and operating during the pandemic. We understand that it is not ideal to hand over your beloved pet, whether they are unwell or just for a routine checkup, but we are so grateful that you trust us to look after them and provide the care that they require. We want you to know that your pets are being loved and comforted by all members of staff during their visits. We feel so lucky to be able to see and cuddle so many cats, dogs, and rabbits! You may have experienced some extended wait times during the pandemic, but we would love to share with you what is happening behind closed doors! We have done so many things, including delivering a litter of Boxer puppies in an emergency caesarean, triaging sick patients, vaccinating, and microchipping litters of kittens and puppies, various orthopaedic surgeries, helping a cheeky Australian Shepherd vomit up a couple of socks, the list goes on! We are so thankful that we have been able to remain open and available to look after your pets during these unprecedented times. We can’t wait for this all to be over and to be able to see all of your faces again! Until then, we will continue to look after your pets all while being as safe as possible.

Stay Safe This Snake Season

With Spring now upon us, it is also snake season. Snakes are more visible in the warmer weather and can be seen when we’re out and about. Sean Cade of Australian Snake Catchers has shared some tips on how to stay safe during this period. Sean began his professional reptile removal service business 15 years ago and together with his partner Freya, have successfully removed many venomous and non-venomous snakes. “Typically, the snake season is Spring and Summer (September to March) each year. However, on warm days they will emerge throughout the year. Snakes don’t hibernate. They experience brumation, which means that they have sporadic bursts of activity” explained Sean. If you encounter a snake, Sean has this important information for us. “Snakes are purely defensive creatures by nature. If they are given an opportunity to escape a situation or retreat, they will prefer this option. Snakes will feel threatened by humans that get too close as we are seen as large predators in their view. “If you encounter a snake, do not approach them. Keep kids and pets away. Back away slowly whilst keeping your eyes on the snake. Most importantly, do not attempt to catch or kill them. 80 to 90% of people are bitten trying to catch or kill a snake” he said. There are also steps to take to ensure your home is safe and minimized of encounters. “Snakes enter premises for food and shelter. Keep rubbish and debris to a minimum and your yard and grass tidy. Don’t put pet water bowls near doorways. Firewood piles should be kept away from the house and on a pallet, if possible. If the snake is in or around your home, call a licensed professional” Sean stated. There are several species of venomous and non-venomous snakes that can be found in Western Sydney. Venomous includes the Eastern Brown Snake, Death Adder, Red Bellied Black Snake, Yellow Faced Whip Snake, Marsh Snake and Golden Crowned Snake. In cooler climates, you’ll find the Eastern Tiger Snake and Highlands Copperhead. Non-venomous include the Common Tree Snake and Diamond Python. For more information about Australian Snake Catchers, visit them on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/ australiansnakecatchers/. Managing Editor Belinda Sanders Writer / Sales Cim Sanders Advertising Sales Michele Collins

October brings with it sun filled days, picnics and ‘friend bubbles’. As vaccination rates climb, so do the hopes of many in anticipation of the much talked about ‘Freedom Day’. After 3 long months of lockdown it seems that we are on the cusp of some sort of ‘normality’. While life will never truly return to what was, this process and time has helped prepare us all for living ‘with’ Covid. Some have witnessed heartbreak and loss during these tough times while others have had to learn to pivot and adapt to changing times; all of us together have had to adopt new ways. We thank our loyal advertisers and readers for continuing to support us through these challenging times of late. It’s your support that has kept us in over 27,000 letterboxes across 20 suburbs and 83,000 readers! By supporting our advertisers, you support us! And for this, we THANK you. Time to catch up on all the latest happenings in Your Community News. Accept what is, let go of what was and have faith in what will be.

SMALL PRINT Advertising Policy... Payment on booking secures your space. The Business Directory offers cost effective advertising to businesses in an alphabetical format.
