2021 Leura Cancelled

Gardens

Festival

It is after much careful consideration and in light of the current serious COVID-19 situation in NSW and other states, that the Leura Gardens Festival committee has made the difficult decision to cancel the Festival scheduled for October 2021. Their main considerations included not wanting to put the many garden visitors, volunteers, and garden owners at risk. The committee would particularly like to acknowledge the garden owners who, once again, have committed considerable time, effort, and money in preparing their gardens in anticipation of the Festival going ahead. Hence, it was also considered that a decision not to proceed needed to be made sooner rather than later. They plan to make their 2022 Festival a wonderful celebration for all garden lovers. They look forward to welcoming everyone back to the upper Blue Mountains, to enjoy their beautiful cool-climate gardens and a return to a safe and healthy world. The 2022 Festival will be held over two long weekends in early Spring. Information is available on the Festival website at www. leuragardensfestival.com.au or by calling 0431 095279. Follow Leura Gardens Festival on Facebook and Instagram too for more news and updates.

Chloe Competes in First International Pageant Ropes Crossing’s Chloe Zrebiec has just competed in the Regency International Pageant, her first international competition. She was awarded 4th Runner-Up, placing in the Top 5, which was an incredible result for Chloe and her team. Made even more impressive was the fact that Chloe was unable to compete in the international pageant face-to-face in Las Vegas, due to the current pandemic and instead competed virtually. “Not having the ability to be in Las Vegas to compete in person made it a lot more challenging to engage with the judges and other contestants. Chloe and the rest of the Australian delegation were required to make virtual submissions to compete, however, with this challenge Team Australia put their best effort into this competition and put ourselves, our stories, and our platforms out there” said Keri Keightley, Chloe’s Mum. “Kim Cancellier, the Australian director, put in her endless efforts into making it possible for Chloe to take part in the pageant. She didn’t only have to send in virtual submissions for the competition, but also had to wake up early for a zoom with American judges for the interview section of the pageant. With all of this said, and the competition being on such a larger scale, it was still an incredible experience as she was able to share her story and her platform, advocating for mental health” she continued. When Chloe competed in the National Australian Miss Program and was crowned 2021 Miss Teen Australia Regency International in October last year, this gave her the opportunity to compete in the pageant held in Las Vegas. Looking forward, Chloe is focused upon continuing with pageantry and actively advocating for mental health. “Chloe plans to continue with her pageant journey, sharing her story about mental health and that if you are experiencing difficulties in this tough time that it is okay to not be okay and that you are not alone. She will continue her runway work and photoshoots that she has been able to take part in since being crowned and having those doors opened. Chloe will take every day as it comes and is open to any new opportunities” Keri finished. v Chloe during filming for Regency at Eastern Creek | Image: Katherine Musgrave [Inset] Chloe Zrebiec | Image: Ruby Adamson/Little Sunshine Imagery

Joeys FC Jump into Jordan Springs

Despite the 2021 Nepean Football Association Season being cut short due to the pandemic, Jordan Springs Joeys FC were welcomed with open arms into the community after their move to Village Oval. The club expanded this year, which saw them register 26 teams in the local competition. 20 of these were junior teams and was great to see so many kids of the community get involved in the sport. Jordan Springs Joeys FC made the move to Village Oval from Parker Street Oval mid-season. “We have had many highlights this season. Seeing the expansion of the club and being able to involve so much more of the local community in soccer has been positive. Getting the keys and lights to Village Oval and finding a new home was also a highlight” said Stephanie Massie of Jordan Springs Joeys FC. The support from the community has been amazing. In particular, those parents who volunteered to become coaches or managers of their teams through to those who spent time cooking on the BBQ. With the current lockdown restrictions, some of the adult teams have been enjoying playing trivia via Zoom. This is in anticipation for trial games later in the year, should the health restrictions be lifted. The club also hope to organise some fundraising activities to help build them for a stronger 2022 season. “We are excited about and looking forward to kicking off the 2022 season at Village Oval. It will be our first full season in Jordan Springs. Just like we did this year, we look towards growing the club more, with a focus on recruiting more females. We hope to grow the adult teams so that they can have as much fun as the kids do” smiled Stephanie. For more information about Jordan Springs Joeys FC, visit their website at www.joeyssoccer.com or find them on Facebook. r Jordan Springs Joeys FC All Age Women 2021 team | Image: Jordan Springs Joeys FC

Brooks Tavern Coming to Jordan Springs

Brooks Tavern at Jordan Springs is due to begin construction next month, in October 2021. It is anticipated to take 10 and a half months to build, with completion at the end of August 2022. The multi-million-dollar hotel will have a bar, dining and cocktail areas all providing a comfortable and modern interior. It will feature a beer range which will include craft offerings, alfresco dining, and a beer garden, alongside an outdoor playground for children. “Brooks at Jordan Springs has been designed to provide the community with a venue full of atmosphere and always open and welcoming! It will be a hotel where everyone will be welcome – locals, families, friends and we will provide an offering where they will always enjoy themselves” said Arthur Laundy of Laundy Hotel Group. “The hotel will be a modern yet warm atmosphere that has a great food and drink offering, to ensure we provide the opportunity to create many memories. Jordan Springs is a young, vibrant town that is calling out for a high-quality hotel, and we know there are a lot of young families in the area” Arthur continued. There will be a number of job opportunities for the local community. This will include bar staff, front of house, kitchen staff, management, marketing, and functions staff. “Jordan Springs boasts a beautiful water side location. The term “Brook” meaning small stream, with its local history piqued our interest. ‘In 1805, Captain John Houston was granted 500 acres of land in what is now Jordan Springs. A land swap around 1820 saw William Faithful take ownership. Faithful had previously purchased 700 acres from Richard Brooks in 1818’. Thus, “Brooks Tavern” became a very appropriate name” explained Arthur. “We truly believe that we will provide a venue that will bring people together, they will come for a drink, a coffee and they will stay for a meal. It is important to us to be a part of this community and we are really looking forward to welcoming and meeting everyone” he ended. Brooks Tavern will be located at 3989 Lakeside Parade, Jordan Springs. It will be open from 10:00am, 7 days a week. r

Ropes Crossing Students Cheer for Jess Fox

Keeping Children Safe Online: What Are They Seeing? How do we prepare children to cross the road? We speak to them about the risks, we practise looking right and left, and we show them how to identify zebra crossings. In the beginning, we hold their hands and walk with them. Now consider, have you given as much thought to preparing your child to cross what is dubbed “the information superhighway” – the internet? In a time when social distancing is key to addressing the evolving public health issue of Covid-19, the internet allows children to learn, connect and create. However, going online is not risk-free. Over the next three articles, we explore three questions every parent must ask when their child uses the internet: 1. What are they seeing? 2. What are they doing? 3. Who are they talking to? According to eSafety research, most young people have viewed inappropriate content before the age of 17. Nearly half of children aged 9 to 16 regularly view sexual images. These images are most often viewed on either content-sharing apps such as Snapchat or Discord, or on live-streaming platforms such as TikTok or Periscope. How do you know what your child is seeing? Your first thought might be to maximise parental controls (and this is important), but the first step to online safety does not require technology. It is the simple, powerful but often under-estimated tool of parenting: Talking to your child. According to research from our national Centre to Counter Child Exploitation, only half of Australian parents regularly talk to their children about online safety. It is vital to create the space for your children to speak to you honestly about any concerns they have about their internet use. Here are some ways you can do this: • Be curious and supportive, learn about their favourite games or apps; • Talk to them about the risks of going online; • Problem-solve together what they might do if they see something scary or yucky online; • Avoid using the removal of devices as a behavioural consequence. For more information, visit the eSafety Commissioner’s website on https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents.

Students at Ropes Crossing Public School cheered till their voices were hoarse. So loud and fierce that they were sure that C1 Olympian Jessica Fox could hear them all the way over the Equator in Tokyo, Japan! In 2018, one of Ropes Crossing Public School’s inaugural Sport Houses was named after Jessica Fox, as she embodied the spirit, hopes and dreams of Western Sydney. With the Whitewater Stadium perfectly placed for Canoe Slalom, nestled at the foot of the Blue Mountains and home of the Sydney 2000 Olympic K1 races; ‘Fox House’ was a natural fit for the school. When approached about the honour, Jess was excited and very quick to choose the House colour. Blue, of course, for the charges she makes through the rapids. Jess has visited the school many times, hearing the House War Cry live and chanted by the students was an amazingly special moment for her. In March 2021, Jess visited and was presented with her very own Fox House Sport Shirt, emblazoned with her name and an image of a paddler. Ropes Crossing students were thankful to Paddle Australia (Jessica’s sporting body) when students in Fox House were invited to watch and be spectators at the Canoe Slalom World Championships in 2019, held at the Stadium. And what an amazing moment for Ropes Crossing Public School when Jess was interviewed. Fresh after being crowned an Olympic Champion and she spoke about them on international TV! The war cry, written by Ropes Crossing Teacher Vicki Garnon, could have been what everyone was thinking as she won her first ever gold for Australia. It was the first gold in the C1 event at the Olympics, an event she is passionate about and campaigned to include in the 2020 list of recognised events. Charging through the rapids Is what we do best We are the toughest Put us to the test Never give up Never give in We are the team to WIN WIN WIN! F-O-X… FOX! Words to define a great race, terrific champion, and amazing Australian! Go Jess! r Jessica Fox in her Fox House shirt | Image/Article: Ropes Crossing Public School

HEALTH MATTERS

Article Written + Submitted by: Andreas Klein Nutritionist + Remedial Therapist from Beautiful Health + Wellness P: 0418 166 269

Chronic Migraine – Could it Really Have a Simple Solution? This article was inspired by a patient who has suffered ongoing debilitating migraines for some years. The patient attended the clinic while in the middle of a 4-day migraine attack, which had been preceded by visual aura. Her severe headache was accompanied by photophobia (sensitivity to light) and bouts of nausea and vomiting. The patient had spent a considerable amount of time suffering on her bathroom floor, sick and in semi-darkness. Medications had been ineffective, and she was desperate for relief. The Greek word for migraine is ‘hemikrania’ and comes from the Greek roots hemi (half ) and kranion (skull or head) literally ‘half the head’. Our modern term migraine defines a recurrent throbbing headache that typically affects one side (or area) of the head, often with intense pain, nausea, and sensitivity to light and sound. Migraines are of two types, those: 1. with aura - called classic migraine 2. without aura called common migraine Auras are visual-field or other disturbances that usually strike before the migraine itself: • Flashes of light • Shimmering spots or stars • Blind spots (scotomas), with simple geometric designs • Zigzag lines floating across the visual field • Other changes in vision, or

• Vision loss But can include other temporary symptoms: • Numbness, typically felt as tingling in a hand or one side of the face that may spread slowly along a limb • Speech or language difficulty • Muscle weakness 4.9 million Australians suffer migraines, 71% are women, 86% of working age. 7.6% of migraine sufferers experience chronic migraine (≥15 migraine days-per-month). The estimated $35.7 billion personal and financial costs Australia-wide are staggering: o $14.3 billion in health system costs o $16.3 billion of productivity costs o $5.1 billion other costs Unfortunately, these costs are likely needlessly incurred as the majority of migraines are generally easily treated, usually without pain killers. The above patient was given a full body remedial treatment with appropriate additional Muscle Elongation Therapy applied to specific head, neck, and shoulder muscles. Immediately following treatment, all migraine symptoms had abated and the patient sat smiling and yawning ready for home and sleep. If you’ve been suffering migraine or other headaches, feel free to call the clinic. Next month well take a further look at what science says about migraine cause.

FAITH – ST DAVIDS CHURCH LLANDILO Article Written + Submitted by: Rev John Hebblewhite A: Lot 257A Seventh Ave, Llandilo P: 4736 3592 Service Times: 10am each Sunday, with additional services held: 2pm on the Third Sunday + 8am on the Fourth Sunday

During 2020/2021, it is becoming increasingly important as the personal and community lifestyles have been impacted, to consider a host of questions. One of which, from a Christian point of view, is what of God within this situation? For the past 2000 years or so, the constant teaching is that we live and experience God’s creation. Alongside its vastness, complexity and beauty, there comes times of drought and flood, disease and sickness, natural disasters etc. Currently we are experiencing a worldwide virus that can mutate and spread rapidly. The death toll to date is mind boggling alongside the enormous economic cost that will impact on many years ahead. The challenge is, while accepting the situation as a devastating downside in life, none the less an even greater challenge to be found in finding ways to bring the virus to heel. History is full of successes when challenges such as the virus arises. Malaria, poliomyelitis, swine flu to name but a few, have been brought under control by determined efforts. Currently it is noted the determined efforts in research to find solutions. Not always altruistic, but none the less determined. Just as in our private lives and in the community at large, is the need to use our God given common sense and our God given intelligence to activate a positive response recognising the variety and often incomprehensible attributes found in Mankind. More importantly is to place it within the Christian acceptance that it is God’s world as God has revealed it. We can only stand in awe of the world in which we find ourselves. Basically, the conviction holds that this is God’s world and as we find it the reality of suffering and death is constant. We are perplexed but not in despair!

Young NSW RFS Volunteers Honoured The achievements of young members of the NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) have been recognized with the announcement of two Young Volunteers of the Year and the NSW Secondary School Cadet of the Year. Minister for Police and Emergency Services David Elliott said the award program is an opportunity to acknowledge the invaluable role young people play in the NSW emergency services. “I am pleased to announce the 2021 Young Volunteer of the Year recipients are Tim Hearn of Llandilo Brigade (Cumberland District) and Lavhynnia Lowe from Bathurst Brigade (Chifley District), while the Secondary School Cadet of the Year for 2021 is Nathan Hindmarsh from Braidwood Central School/Krawarree Brigade,” Mr Elliott said. “These exceptional young people have been recognised for their outstanding participation and achievements in the NSW RFS, and they are all great examples of enthusiastic young people who have devoted their time to helping protect their communities”. “I congratulate this year’s winners, thank them for their contribution to the NSW community and wish them all well in their future endeavours. I also thank the teachers, cadet coordinators and RFS volunteers who dedicate their time to train and mentor young people,” Mr Elliott said. NSW RFS Commissioner Rob Rogers said it was encouraging to see the engagement and commitment of young people in emergency-service volunteering. “The effort and enthusiasm of young members in the NSW RFS is significant and these awards acknowledge their hard work, camaraderie and community participation,” Commissioner Rogers said. “These young people have demonstrated the commitment and enthusiasm that ensure our great volunteer emergency services will go from strength to strength in coming years and I congratulate each of them on their well-deserved awards”. r Tim Hearn | Image: NSWRFS | Article: David Elliott MP

Happy Fathers Day A Poem from Your Dog Before I was a Dog Dad: I had never been peed on, pooped on, drooled on, chewed on or nipped by puppy teeth. Before I was a Dog Dad: I had complete control of my thoughts, my body and mind. I slept all night without sharing the pillows or covers. Before I was a Dog Dad: I never looked into big soulful eyes and cried. I never felt my heart break into a million pieces when I couldn’t stop a hurt. I never knew something so furry and four legged could affect my heart so deeply. Before I was a Dog Dad: I had never held a sleeping puppy just because I couldn’t put it down. I had never gotten out of bed in the middle of the night to make sure all was well. I didn’t know how good it feels to feed a hungry puppy. I didn’t know that something so small could make me feel so important. Before I was a Dog Dad: I had never known the warmth, the joy, the love, the heartache, the wonderment or the satisfaction of being a dog Dad. Images: www.pixabay.com w

Read About It Jordan Springs now has its own community street library, with Brick Kiln Park Library a great addition to the local area. Brick Kiln Park Library is located at Brick Kiln Park on Armoury Road in Jordan Springs. Street Libraries are beautiful homes for books, planted in schools, community gardens, not-for-profit organisations, and in front of people’s front yards. They are accessible from the street and are an invitation to share the joys of reading with neighbours. They are a window into the mind of a community; books come and go; no one needs to check them in or out. People can simply reach in and take what interests them when they are done, they can return them to the Street Library network, or pass them on to friends. The sharing of stories has connected people for thousands of years. And yet today, many of us are more caught up in sharing “Insta-stories” than we are in genuine stories. Street Libraries are an antidote to this. At a time when so much of our lives have become digitised, these tiny vestibules of literary happiness are able to surprise and delight the lives of those who stumble across them and the books that line their shelves. Street Libraries mission is to have 5,000 registered libraries by December 2021, and they are already well on their way with cracking 3,100. The Street Library family is an eclectic collection of individuals – some literary, some not! If you would like to buy and start your own street library, they can be purchased through their website www.streetlibrary.org.au. Mention the promo code ‘gazette’ to receive $30 off a pre-made street library. Offer is valid until 30th September 2021.

Spring is finally here! It’s hard to believe that the month of September is already upon us. Where has this year gone? We are in the midst of the lockdown across Greater Sydney; however, things are looking positive. The Premier has announced that restrictions should be eased by the end of the month, as the COVID-19 vaccination rates increase. Never has it been more important than now to support local business. Whether it’s a home delivered meal from a café or restaurant or a trade/service that you need for home, businesses in our community need our help. Get behind them and show your support where you can. The 2020 Tokyo Olympics have come and gone, and the Paralympic Games have begun. Millions across the country have been cheering on our Aussie athletes as they take on the world’s best. This month’s stories are filled with inspiration and hope – ‘hope’ that we can all finish the year positively, safely and healthily together. Stay kind, it makes you beautiful. Time to catch up on all the latest happenings in Your Community News.
