Residents Concerned about development After the development application notification for the erection of residential units in Lamrock Street, Emu Plains, residents held a meeting to decide their course of action. More facts were gathered and it was found that the proposal was for five buildings, the majority being four storeys in height and they were to be erected in two stages. Parking for 99 spaces was provided in the proposal. A helicopter pad was also shown on one of the buildings. All the residents of Lamrock Street, Avoca Avenue, Picasso Place and the Great Western Highway from Lamrock Street to Stanton Lane and some residents from York Street are opposed to the proposal for a variety of reasons. The main reason is that the proposal is entirely out of character and context for the surrrounding area. Problems can be seen with increased traffic and noise and that the block is flood prone. The residents realise that some type of development will occur on the site eventually but this type of medium density housing is entirely unacceptable and as such, the residents have
forwarded individual letters of complaint and a petition containing 77 signatures to Council for consideration.
Girl Guides Centenary Campfire Local Girl Guides have been celebrating 100 years of Guiding with a series of events throughout 2010. The Guide hall in Emu Plains was the site for the Chain of Campfires around the Nation event on the 19th June. About 60 Girl Guides from the Penrith division enjoyed an afternoon of activities followed by a traditional campfire with singing. More details about local Guides from 8396 5200 or: www.girlguides-nswact.org.au.
Jessica’s Canoeing
According to the Australian Canoeing website, at the Australian Youth Olympic team selection trials at Penrith Jessica’s result was fantastic. ‘The new format of competition adopted for the Singapore Youth Olympic Games presented a challenge in mastering the technical and physical demands of a head to head sprint on a figure of 8 course and a slalom obstacle course around buoys using new equipment and rules.

There’s no Place like Home Children in Kindergarten at Emu Heights Public School recently explored first hand the amazing building skills of wild animals. The children crawled, climbed and nestled in giant model homes of snails….to learn first hand how the animals they were studying shelter and
survive. The study also included an exploration of why animals make different shape homes, the materials they use and how to encourage animals to live in our gardens. The study will conclude later this term when some friendly ducks, pigs, chickens, goats and sheep come to visit. Emu Heights Public School is a great place for children to learn and grow. Answer to the puzzle on page 8
All the numbers are whole numbers (intro), so B is an even number (clue 5) and C is an even number (clue 6), so B minus C is 6 (1). No number is higher than 34 and no two numbers are the same (intro). D is a sixth of B (5) and F is a quarter of C (6), so B is 30 and C is 24 (1 and above). D is 5 and F is 6 (above). G is 11 (4). H is 25 (2). E is 20 (3). A is 29 (7).

Hockey at Nepean High
In 2009 Nepean High School finished in the top eight schools in the State with no funding and a team mostly organized by the students. This is a magnificent result that even a sports school would be proud of. This year, four students have been selected for the Sydney West Regional Hockey team, and Year 11 student, Andrea Seymour, has been selected for the NSW All Schools. Andrea will be going to Western Australia for the trials to be selected for the Australian All Schools team. It will cost around $3,000 which will have to be fund raised.

Further to the information on page 1, the Oiena Pchilka branch of the Ukrainian Womens’ Association will entertain with a short program of dance, performing in their colourful Ukrainian embroidered costumes. They will also have a stall selling Ukrainian pastry and a display of
Ukrainian artefacts. The 5th Light Horse Regiment will demonstrate a troop drill and the Australian Heritage Dance Company will be performing at the festival for the first time at the festival. Children can join in old fashioned games, pet animals in the animal farm and this year get up close to live reptiles from the Herpotological Society. They can jump to their heart’s desire in the jumping castle, get their face painted, try their hand in the old school room, take a ride on Thomas the Tank Engine’s train or ride on a pony and much more. The biggest tug-of-war in the Nepean Valley will take place in the afternoon and teams will vie for the chance to beat last year’s winners - under the control of the Marines, of course. There will be plenty of displays, food, music, stalls, entertainment and activities, both old and new. The festival commemorates the day William Cox started the road across the Blue Mountains in 1814.
Blue Mountains City Church, at Mt. Riverview, is holding a Market Day at Mt. Riverview School on Saturday 31st July. This event will raise funds for a variety of projects within the community.
