Cancer Council Morning tea

Artie and Jean Wilmington, Dr and Mrs Ryan

The Luddenham morning tea organised by Artie and Jean Wilmington was a great success. They would like to thank everyone who helped at the event. Luddenham Public School held a Cupcake for Cancer event and raised $130.

High Tea in Mulgoa Mulgoa Valley Receptions was established in 2006 by Cameron and Karren Thomas. The property was purchased by Karren 12 years ago, as a dance studio and a reception centre and operated as the successful Champions for Dance until recently when Karren and her husband Cam-

eron decided to turn their focus to wedding and functions. Mulgoa Valley Receptions was created from the excitement and memories they experienced when they held their own wedding on the property. From that day, they decided to invite the public to also share their weddings and special occasions on the property. For your special occasion, Mulgoa Valley Receptions offers everything at the one location. An outdoor ceremony area overlooking the valley, a reception centre with warm country charm and unforgettable photo opportunities. Cameron, a chef for 14 years who loves the rural lifestyle, brings his passion for food to offer a memorable experience of country hospitality. He is also a cake designer and includes his creations as part of the events. The property boasts a menagerie of farm animals including two camels which create interest for passing traffic! They have free ranging chickens,

ducks and peacocks with over a dozen dorper sheep and their lambs. Next month, Sunday 10th and Sunday 17th July, Mulgoa Valley Receptions will be holding a High Tea in the Valley. Recreating the traditional High Tea, there will be ribbon sandwiches, hot savories, and delicious petite desserts and macaroons. What better way to spend a Sunday, sipping tea overlooking the Mulgoa Valley. For more details see the advert below.

Numbering Our Days It’s winter. In summer, ministers do weddings. In winter, ministers do funerals. Two months ago my grandpa died of cancer. A few weeks ago, a teenage boy died riding his bike. Tomorrow, I go to the funeral of a man who didn’t quite make 90, again from cancer. Since becoming a minister, I’ve done funerals for all shapes and sizes of people. The saddest headstone at St Thomas Mulgoa reads of a woman just over 20 who died, obviously in childbirth. A few days later her new daughter followed her to the grave. Sadly, they make little coffins as well as big ones. We don’t like to think about death. But it coming. Only its timing is the issue, unless Jesus returns first. Moses wrote this: ‘The length of our days is seventy years -- or eighty, if we have the strength; yet their span is but trouble and sorrow, for the quickly pass, and we fly away... Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom’ (Psalm 90:10, 12 NIV). Jesus’ answer to the problem of death is himself. He says, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die’ (John 11:25-26 NIV). He also says, ‘whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life’ (John 5:24 NIV) Jesus. Don’t leave Earth Without Him. Matt Olliffe, Minister, Anglican Parish of Mulgoa www.anglicanparishmulgoa.com.au Sunday services: Mulgoa 8.30am, 6.45pm Warragamba 10.30am Also Wednesday services.

Baby & Kids Market back in Penrith Mums have a canny knack for hunting down a bargain. The Baby & Kids Market is in its ninth year with quality preloved baby and kids’ items. This community-based event has grown to over 120 weekend markets serving over 100,000 savings conscious shoppers each year. “It’s no longer a closely guarded secret,” said Jennifer Harrison of Baby & Kids Market “mums have a habit of wanting to spread the word when they’ve had a great experience and thanks largely to this kind of word of mouth, we’re now getting queues outside our markets an hour before we open the doors! Who can blame them when you can literally save thousands of dollars by buying gently used items that look and feel brand new?” As one shopper put it “You’d be mad to spend a fortune decking your children out in the latest brands when they grow out of them in a flash. I shop at the Baby & Kids Market each season and find great brands like Country Road, Seed and Fred Bare for a fraction of the cost.” Be sure to come along and join in with the fun and bargains! Another secret weapon that mums have been quick to embrace is the sales alert newsletter, Mums Grapevine. Set up in 2008 by Melbourne based mum Caroline Taylor, the opt in email service delivers details of big sales events to tens of thousands of Australian mums every week. “Now, more than ever, mums know they can avoid paying retail by hunting around.” said Caroline “Whether that be through sales networks like ours or by buying preloved, there are just so many options available! ”

Jason Owen Post 20/8/96 ~ 8/5/11 Eldest son of Leanne, brother of Shane, Grandson of Elaine Bonning and Great Grandson of the late Ruby Wilmott. Jason’s life was tragically cut short by a motorbike accident at Sunny Corner on Mother’s Day. Jason was a popular young man, who loved life, enjoying active sports. He was a Councillor and Captain of Wallacia Primary School until attending Glenmore High School. He joined the Australian Airforce Cadets earlier this year and had dreams of flying a jet plane. About 500 people attended the service at St Thomas Church, Mulgoa on 17th May to help celebrate his life. Jason’s family would like to thank the Rev Matthew Olliffe, Adrian Sheen for playing the organ, Michael Heise for sound and visual, all who assisted with parking, the 323 Squadron for the Guard of Honour, White Lady Funerals and everyone for their love and support, floral tributes, gifts, cards and face book tributes. A very special thankyou to all his mates who carried him into the Church and erected a sign on Glenmore Loch, especially Jordan and Bowen.

the traditional dancing. Dr Adrian Sheen has organised this event for 8 years and said “We raised over $7000 which was a great result for the chosen charity ‘Puffin Magic’ but it is only part of the event. Keeping music live and having a good night out is also important.” Dr Sheen plays trombone in The Mulgoa Road Jazz band were great entertainment as well as the other Idol competitors.

This year’s winner was the Sudanese singer Abaker Malek Athum. Abaker came to Australia about 8 years ago to escape the war in Sudan. He writes his own music and sang a song about his journey. He is extremely grateful to be here but did have a message for young people to avoid alcohol and drugs and to enjoy this wonderful country. The young Irish Dancers also won Mulgoa Idol mugs to add to their collection of awards. Patrick, Libby and Kate Wakeling are very talented and it was a treat to watch

Refurbished Toilet block in Wallacia Penrith Council has appointed a building contractor to give Wallacia a boost with an $80,000 investment on refurbishing the rural township’s amenities block which has been in disuse due to vandalism. The toilet block is in the reserve down by the river. Penrith City Deputy Mayor Jim Aitken OAM said: “We expect the works to be completed by the end of June. Importantly they will include an accessible toilet, plus footpaths and landscaping around the amenities block. Sensor lighting will also be installed. Several dead trees nearby will also be removed.” Councillor Aitken said the improvements along with many other projects throughout rural and urban areas, and both established and newer areas, showed value for ratepayers’ funds across Penrith City.

CLUB TURNS 50!!! Warragamba Workers & Sporting Club began as a “Wet Canteen” for the workers during the construction of the Warragamba Dam. The building of the Dam was completed in 1960 and a group of residents decided to form a Club and purchase the “Canteen” from the Waterboard. A committee of 17 people were elected consisting of a President, Trustees and Committee men. We began with a group of 100 “foundation members”. “Millers Brewery” agreed to provide finance so that the Canteen could be purchased and a license was granted to become a Club in June 1961. The Club’s logo was designed by Mr Lon McAllister. The age to join was 21 and ladies were only “Associate Members” and not allowed to vote or attend Annual General Meetings. In the 1970’s ladies became full members and in June 1985 our name was changed to Warragamba Worker’s and Sporting Club Ltd. Over the years the original “Wet Canteen” was added to and extended to meet the needs of our members. In 1973 we purchased the land

that the present club is situated on and it was used as a carpark for our original Club. Tragically, on 11th April, 2001 we lost our original Club to a fire which destroyed the entire first floor along with a lot of memorabilia which could not be replaced. Our Club was closed for eight months while we did battle with our insurance company and our old building was demolished. We set up a temporary office in the main shopping centre of Warragamba. We established a temporary premises in a demountable building in December, 2001. As part of our License, no children were allowed into the Club, and the only food available were pies and sausage rolls from an oven behind the bar. Whilst operating from our temporary premises, construction began on our new Club. The cost of our new building was $3.2 million and we had to borrow $1.2 million to complete construction. We took out a 10 year loan with the ANZ Bank.

Our new building, see the photo in the advert, was completed in February, 2005 offering our members a TAB area, Lounge Area, Dining area and wonderful outdoor areas to enjoy our bush views. Our “Spillway Bistro” is open for lunch and dinner 7 days a week and offers Australian and Thai (Wed to Sun) meals. We hold regular social activities such as bingo, trivia, poker and raffles and have active sporting clubs to join. We have now been in our new premises for six years and our loan with the bank is due to be paid off later this year. We would like to thank our members and the local community for their continued support of the Club as we celebrate our 50th Birthday. We have a wonderful weekend planned with the details below. Our Family Fun Day starts from 12.30pm. At 1pm kids will be entertained by “D.J Jewels” with games, prizes, facepainting and karaoke. There will be a jumping castle and a free sausage sizzle. “Gin House Trio” will then perform from 3pm.Our new “Courtesy Bus” will be also available over the weekend. Hope to see you all here to help us celebrate our 50th birthday!!

Catholic Schools Week The school joined with over 600 Catholic schools around Australia celebrating the great work that takes place in all Catholic schools around the country. Principal Mr Vane-Tempest said “We take immense pride in our Catholic heritage and are committed to continuing to offer to the children the opportunity to follow Jesus as members of the Catholic community at Holy Family School.

Our day started with the celebration of Eucharist and incorporated Mother’s day, was led by a number of our students. This was followed by a shared morning tea in the grounds and concluded with open classrooms and a chance for our visitors to ex-

perience learning in a contemporary classroom. Congratulations to all involved in today’s Catholic Schools Week event. Once again it highlights the wonderful work that takes place in our school each day and of the community in coming together to acknowledge and celebrate the many achievements of the children. Cross Country On 3rd May 42 students from Holy Family school attended the annual Diocesan Cross Country Carnival at Eastern Creek Raceway. All students competed to their best and represented our school with great enthusiasm. Wallacia Bowling

of parents Joe and Neta, Bruce Chamberlin and his family have hosted an annual Bowls Tournament in their memory. This year it was held on Sunday 29th May and as always was an exceptional day. Bruce, and his late brother Scotty and his wife Pam, have devoted much of their time in their adult life to being active in the running of the Club, all having been on the Board and on many sub-committees over the years. Bruce made a wonderful speech at the presentation about family and community and there were a few misty eyes in the room. The day was

Tracy Smith won the Wallacia Womens' Bowling Club Major Singles title defeating Lisa Morehead and teamed up with Tanya Kelly to win the Pairs title, defeating Sue Ashurst and Kerrie Quinn. The ladies at Wallacia WBC are holding a big tournament on Wednesday 29th June and would like as many teams as possible to enter. It is a rotating triples day with prize money of $1500 which is well worth playing for. There are also some great raffle prizes including a flat screen TV and a Camcorder. Entry is $60 per team which includes lunch. Any bowling ladies who are interested in fielding a team please call the Club. The Chamberlin Family have been in the local area for many years (Mark owns Mulgoa Bakery, Bruce works at Regentville Public School and Pam at Kemps Creek Public School) and they L to R-Bruce Chamberlin, Skinny Hogg, Pam have been involved with Wallacia Bowl- Chamberlin,Dot Chamberlin, Peter Chamberlin ing Club since the 50s. Mulgoa Valley Landcare Group The Mulgoa Valley Landcare Group has been involved in conservation in the Mulgoa area for 16 years. In that time we have been working to restore the critically endangered vegetation communities along Mulgoa Creek in an effort to improve biodiversity and habitat conditions for the native wildlife. Our corridor links important areas of remnant vegetation on private property through Mulgoa thereby improving the migratiory, foraging and habitat opportunities for our vanishing wildlife. Our group meets on the first Saturday of each month from 9am until midday at various locations along Mulgoa Creek. We produce a monthly Newsletter which details the venue for our next activity day. Our sites include both public and private land. We predominantly control invasive weeds which outcompete native plants and destroy the delicate ecosystems of our native vegetation communities. We always need extra voluntees and provide all that is needed to get involved with our bush regeneration work (including gloves, tools and herbicide). Contact Lisa www.mulgoagazette.com.au

and your details can be added to our Landcare Contacts list to recieve the monthly email. Every pair of hands helps, even if it is just for one Activity Day per year! Our project has been well assisted by government grants and corporate sponsorship over the past 15 years. Currently we are administering a grant of $90,000 over a 3 year period funded by the State Government’s “Enviornmental Trust”. This funding provides the assistance of professional bush regeneration teams to help us the with the more complex and overwhelming weed issues we encounter along Mulgoa Creek. Recently, St Dominic’s College raised $2000 to assist our project. This funding will be used to involve a new property in our conservation project (adjacent Cox’s Cottage) and we are very grateful for their support. Penrith City Council will be making a $5000 contribution at Gow Park (sporting fields located on Mulgoa Creek) over the next couple of months. Penrith Waste Depot has also pledged $3000 over the next 3 years to address weed impacts at the entrance of the Waste facility on Mulgoa June 2011

won convincingly by a visiting team who were last minute ring-ins from Austral Bowling Club. Thanks to all of the 24 teams for their support.

WBC 2011 District Pennant Winners

The Wallacia Bowling Club Mens' Grade 6 Pennant team has won the District Pennant for 2011. The Mens' Club has not won a Pennant since 2006 so this was a great shot in the arm for all of us. Well done boys and congratulations also to the Team Manager Lorraine "Skinny" Hogg (who works at Mulgoa Bakery). The team will play off for the Zone Pennant on June 4th at Camden and June 18th and 19th at Orange.

Road. Three other private properties are making cash contributions toward conservation on their properties in conjunction with the Environmental Trust project. Our project area is vast (7Km of creek corridor) and the weed issues are often overwhelming, so we are very appreciative of the funding support that we receive. We also encouarge volunteers who might be undertaking a certificate requiring completion of ‘community service hours’ such a Duke of Edinburgh or scouts. We have hosted corporate events (AMEX , British American Tobacco and Westpac) to encourage corporate involvement in Conservation in Western Sydney. We are currently working with year 8 students of Nepean Christian School who are undertaking a project to create a walking trail along their section of Mulgoa Creek. This will assist with education of younger age groups at the school as they will be able to access a very important natural resource to support their environmental studies If you would like to learn more about your local Landcare Group - or want to get directly involved in helping your local environment, contact Lisa on 0411 487 512. 14
