Fernhill in Mulgoa for sale
Prince William’s wedding to Kate Middleton was apparently seen by two billion people and for all of us here who watched, it was a wonderful occasion. The Bishop of London’s address in Westminster Abbey said this “In a sense every wedding is a royal wedding with the bride and the groom as king and queen of creation, making a new life together so that life can flow through them into the future”. We had our own royal wedding in Mulgoa at 2pm on the 16th April, the week before Prince William’s wedding to Kate. Our beautiful daughter, Eleanor, married Peter Pearson in St Thomas Anglican church in Mulgoa. Afternoon tea in the church hall was followed with the reception at the family home in Mulgoa. Fernhill for Sale
This beautiful mansion was built by Edward Cox for his family in 1842. It is a beautiful Greek Revival stone house, with a semi-circular bay overlooking the valley, St Thomas church and old Cottage. The Sydney Architecture website says ‘Some 20 Stone Masons were brought from Ireland to construct the home and outbuildings over a four year period. It is hard to imagine how the pillars were cut from one piece of stone, quarried on the property and moved into place without the help of our modern day machinery. The windows are etched from the main stone wall, while rich Cedar was used for entry door. Each solid timber beam of
countryside.’ Fernhill has been owned by Warren Anderson and his family for 20 years. The antique paintings and furniture and a unique collection from all over the world were sold by auction last year following a marriage separation. Receivers Korda-Mentha have now placed the property up for sale with Colliers International. The 723acre property is expected to fetch between $50 and $70 million. The estate features a full-length race course, stables, a tennis court and a swimming pool and will be sold in one lot. There is a development application outstanding for a residential subdivision at the top of Fairlight Road.
Cemetary at Luddeham refused Residents are very happy with the decision from Penrith Council to refuse the development application for a crematorium, cemetery and memorial gardens on Elizabeth Drive, Luddenham. Council rejected the development application because of the likely adverse impacts on the quality of the groundwater, the residential amenity and natural environment.
Cemetary on Greendale Rd approved However the residents affected by the five development applications for cemeteries, crematoriums and temples on Greendale Road under Liverpool Council are ready to continue the fight against the rural area being over taken over by burial grounds. Liverpool Council and the Joint Regional Planning Panel have approved the development at 992 Greendale Road which includes a crematorium, a temple and dormitary accomodation. The residents are particularly concerned about contamination of the rainwater supply.

Real Australian, Real Christian, Real Good Bloke: The late Harry Huddleston A couple of months ago we were cleaning out the office in St Paul’s Warragamba to make way for a new room for pre-school Kid’s Church. An old black and white photo hung where our notice boards needed to go, so I took it down. Ray immediately said to me, ‘Don’t take down Harry. Phyllis will want to know where he is!’ So I moved the photo into the church building proper. Sure enough, that Sunday Phyllis came in, and the first thing she said was, ‘Where’s Harry?’ Fortunately for me, I could show her the new place of honour that the photo now occupied. The photo was of Princess Marina shaking an indigenous Australian’s hand out of the front of the Waterboard’s ‘White House’ at Warragamba. That man with the big smile was Harry Huddleston. Anyone whose photograph Phyllis stands guard over must be worth investigating. So I sat down with her to find out a little bit more, and did a little digging on the internet, and in the St
Thomas’ Mulgoa ‘Parish History’. Harry Huddleston was born on the Roper River in the Northern Territory. He was educated on Groote Eylandt by the Church Missionary Society. It was there that he met his future wife, Florence Croft. Prior to WWII, he was a pearl diver off the Arnhem Land coast for seven years. During the war he served on ships carrying cargo. However, I also found a record of a Harry Huddleston as a Groot Eylandt airfield guard during late 1942 and early 1943. Around 1942, the old Rectory at Mulgoa was converted to accommodation for children evacuated from the Northern Territory because of the Japanese bombing of Darwin. Some of those children came from the CMS Mission on Roper River to the St Thomas’ Mulgoa Rectory. Harry followed his family and also lived in the Rectory. After WWII, Harry chose to stay in this area rather than return home. He and his family moved into a house in 19th Street, Warragamba. When Warragamba Dam was being built, Harry found employment on the Dam as boatman, or chief driver. Harry was an excellent swim-
mer. He would take the local children down to Wallacia bridge and teach them how to swim. His method seems somewhat ‘old fashioned’, in that he first would throw them in to see if they could float! You could never do it these days. He also worked unofficially for the police as a rescue and recovery diver on Nepean River. Phyllis tells the story of a lady who lost a valuable ring from the Warragamba Dam wall. No worries. Harry dived all the way to the bottom of the dam and found the ring for her. Harry’s time at Warragamba was a time of personal growth as a Christian. Harry became involved in the United Protestant Church at Warragamba, which eventually became St Paul’s Anglican Church. He was a lay leader, serving as both warden and Sunday School teacher. Harry would often lead services and preach when the Minister was away. When Princess Marina attended the morning service, the crowd of 200 outside the church cheered as the Princess shook Harry’s hand and is reported to have said, ‘I am so pleased to meet a real Australian’ Harry was a highly respected worker on Warragamba Dam, and was

chosen to represent the workers at the official opening on October 14 1960. It was a huge celebration, with Princess Marina staying in Warragamba for a week. A story is told that Harry was taking the Water Board Launch up Lake Burrogorang with the Princess on board. The motor stopped working, so Harry got out of the boat and pushed it back to shore. The Duchess is reported to have said, ‘I wouldn’t have blamed you if you swore’. Harry returned to the Northern Territory in 1970, and in 1987 he was ordained deacon in the Anglican Church at St Peter’s Nightcliff. He travelled extensively in northern Australian. He visited remote communities ministering the gospel. He sounds like he was a convinced and determined Christian, for he is reported to have said at a Sunday Evening service at Nurralinga College that Indigenous people who were Christians must abandon traditional beliefs and practices (http://compassreview.org/summer06/5.html). In other words, Jesus is Lord of all, or not Lord at all. He understood Jesus’ exclusive claims, ‘I
am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me’ (John 14:6), and ‘there is only one name give to men under heaven by which we must be saved’ (Acts 4:12). Harry’s eldest son, the late Bob Huddleston, was a very good sportsman, playing reserve grade for St George and Penrith, and a well known boxer, with 100 amateur and 60 professional fights. He moved to the ACT where he lived for 40 years before his death. (http://www.hansard.act.gov.au/hansard/2008/ week04/1255.htm). Another three of Harry’s children are renowned Aboriginal artists. Well, this is pretty much all I’ve been able to find out about Harry. You of course may know more. If you have any personal reminiscences or information, drop me a line at PO Box 27, Silverdale NSW 2752, email at m.k.olliffe@me.com, or phone 4774 0422 or 0401 958 161. Riverland Harmony Chorus competes The Riverland Harmony Chorus includes several ladies from Mulgoa and Wallacia and is heading off to this year’s Sweet Adelines Convention in Newcastle to measure their skills with
21 other Australian Choruses in a national singing competition. Riverland Harmony Chorus is a member of Sweet Adelines, an International Organisation of around 24,000 women worldwide who love to sing and perform barbershop style music, a form of a cappella singing in
four parts: bass, baritone, lead (which is the melody) and tenor. Barbershop is a very complex and highly demanding art form, often underestimated for the level of skill and commitment needed to do it well. In Australia there are around 30 Choruses with around 1,200 members. The annual convention, judged by internationally accredited judges, is a popular and highly anticipated national singing contest for all of them. ‘’The judges will be listening to our sound and also judge our musical arrangement, expression and showmanship’’ Music Director Nerryl Liston said. ‘’The goal is to produce a perfectly matched and resonant sound throughout the whole song, with the chords ‘locking and ringing’. Holy Family School Luddenham Holy Family joined over 600 Catholic schools around Australia which have been celebrating the great work that takes place in all Catholic schools around the country. We take immense pride in our Catholic heritage and are committed to continuing to offer to the children the opportunity to follow Jesus as members of the Catholic community at Holy Family School. Our day started with the celebration of Eucharist and incorporated Mother’s day, was led by a number of our students. This was followed by a shared morning tea in the grounds and concluded with open classrooms and a chance for our visitors to experience learning in a contemporary classroom. Congratulations to all involved in Catholic Schools Week event. Once again it highlights the wonderful work that takes place in our school each day and of the community in coming together to acknowledge and celebrate the many achievements of the children.

Calls to re-open Warragamba ‘Tip’ There are calls for the status of ‘Warragamba Resource Recovery Facility’ to be re-examined after Bargo Tip was re-assessed at being viable for another 20 years. Recent examinations of the Bargo facility have increased its’ life expectancy to 2031 and North Ward Councillors are calling for the Warragamba site to undergo a similar re-evaluation. “Warragamba Trial Resource Recovery Facility” was closed in July 2008 when it was deemed to be near its’ capacity and was no longer viable for council to operate. Since then there has been a marked increase in illegal dumping in the area.
On a recent visit to Warragamba Councillors Judy Hannan, Simon Landow and Michael Beshara stated that they will ‘pull out all stops to get the facility up and running again’. “ If we all pull together then may-
be we can get the tip open and stop some of the illegal dumping across the Shire.” Judith Hannan said. Each year Council pays out hundreds of thousands of dollars to clean up illegaly dumped waste and while some people are caught and prosecuted this does not nearly cover the cost of the clean up. All three Councillors agreed that at the very least the site should be reevaluated immediately.
“De-coding the Adolescent Mind – A Session for Parents” Seminar
Warragamba ANZAC Day service
Have you ever found yourself confused, bemused or even offended by the attitudes and expectations of today’s young people, this session is for you. In this unique and engaging presentation, Michael McQueen outlines some of the key influences shaping youth culture and the mindsets of generation Y by examining their paradigm when it comes to notions such as respect, truth, communications, patience and learning. Get set for a revealing and humorous look at how this younger generation approach and view the world in a very different way to their parents. This presentation will give audience members a unique insight into what young people are thinking and why. Michael McQueen is a Sydney-based speaker, social researcher and business owner. In 2004 Michael founded a training consultancy called The Nexgen Group and since then has presented to and worked with over 85,000 people across Australia, South East Asia and North America. Michael has written two bestselling books. His first book “The ‘New’ Rules of Engagement” focuses on demographic trends and strategies for engaging with Generation Y, while his second book “Memento: The Gift of a Lifetime” is designed to help parents and grandparents pass on their stories as a legacy to the next generation. Michael also features regularly on TV and Radio. Many locals turned out in overcast conditions to pay tribute to those who have served our country at Memorial Park in Warragamba The traditional march was led by new Warragamba Police Officer Andrew Martin, followed by Blacktown Pipe Band, Girl Guides, Warragamba Public School students, Rotary and Returned Service People and Representatives. Councillors Judith Hannan, Simon Landow and Michael Beshara attended the Warragamba ANZAC Day Service and laid wreaths at the Cenotaph. The event was led by Father Evans with representatives from all local churches present. At the completion of the service many made their way to the Warragamba Workers Club for a catch up with friends and some two-up.

Wedding Congratulations Eleanor Stepniewski from Mulgoa and Peter Pearson from Griffith were married on the 16th April in St Thomas Anglican church in Mulgoa. Rev Matthew Olliffe conducted the service, with Dr Adrian Sheen playing the organ. Eleanor’s brother Miles and friends entertained the guests with some lively jazz music during the signing of the register. Eleanor designed her wedding dress and it was beautifully made by Imelda Favero in Griffith from satin backed crepe. The lace trimming and buttons were from her mother’s wedding dress and the long veil was edged with matching lace. The gold locket was from her late grandmother Anne The bridesmaids were Eleanor’s sister Amy and her friend Linda Appelgren and the best man was Peter’s brother Jonty, who travelled from Canada. An afternoon tea was served in the church hall with the wedding cake cut and served. The carrot cake was topped with a bride and groom accompanied by a cute black labrador! Eleanor went to school in Mulgoa and then St Pauls Grammar and is now a primary school teacher in Griffith. Peter works in Griffith with a vegetable seed company. Eleanor and Peter knew each other in the North Yorkshire village of Husthwaite where Peter was the village milk boy. He probably didn’t take much notice of 12 year old Eleanor at the time but when they met up in New Zealand seven years ago they knew they were made for each other! The photographer was Lucy Leonardi Photography and there are plenty of great family photographs but Eleanor and Peter love this one which includes their much loved labrador Bea. The reception was held at the family home in Mulgoa and was distinctly Australian with kangaroo, prawns and beef kebabs on the menu. The wonderful buffet food was catered for by Sassafras Creek from Kurrajong village with locally sourced food and the wines were from the Riverina. The jazz band played outside with plenty of music and dancing inside. Many of the guests travelled from overseas from UK, Canada, Sri Lanka, New Zealand as well as Griffith. Most of them stayed at the Wallacia Hotel and were very happy with the excellent rooms and the courtesy bus.
The all important kiss took place in front of the family mud brick home in Mulgoa, amongst the gum trees! Eleanor and Peter generously invited all the family along for the honeymoon at Vincentia, Jervis Bay - a familymoon! Twenty two of us had a relaxing four days near the dog friendly beach and just spending time with both familes. It was a lovely end to a memorable wedding. www.mulgoagazette.com.au

Graffiti Action Day Sunday 15 May is Graffiti Action Day, an annual Keep Australia Beautiful initiative that encourages volunteers to combat visual pollution in their communities. “Graffiti is a form of vandalism, it is a criminal offence and costs communities millions of dollars each year,” Penrith Councillor Aitken said. “Graffiti Action Day is a chance for residents to be an active part of cleaning up our streets, laneways and public spaces. It’s a chance to put the spotlight on this crime and send a message that ‘graffiti is not ok’.” While Council has a highly effective Citywide Graffiti Minimisation
Strategy in place, which has helped decrease the amount of graffiti, Penrith City still has the seventh highest incidence of reported graffiti vandalism in the state. “Our strategy has three key elements – education, prevention and removal,” Councillor Aitken said. “Since 2008 our message has reached 10,000 primary school students and more than 6,000 secondary students. We’ve established a successful reporting hotline and distributed 1,000 Graffiti Removal Information Packages to residents, but more needs to be done and you can take an active part. To register as a volunteer, contact Council’s Public Domain Amenity
