Mulgoa’s Local Woman of the Year Announced
ď ˛ď€ Minister for Women, Pru Goward, 2015 Mulgoa Woman of the year, Frances Refalo and Local MP, Tanya Davies
Minister for Women Pru Goward was joined by Member for Mulgoa Tanya Davies to announce Frances Refalo as the 2015 Local Woman of the Year for Mulgoa. Ms Goward said there were countless outstanding women in NSW and the Local Woman of the Year awards are a chance for the NSW Government and the community to officially recognise the phenomenal contribution they make. “The Local Woman of the Year awards is something I look forward to each year because we get to share the inspirational journeys of a number of outstanding women in NSW, Ms Goward said. “It is the hard and often thankless work of women like Ms Refalo that make not only our communities great places to live, but defines who we are as Australians. Local award winners will be invited to join their Member of Parliament at the 2015 NSW Women of the Year award ceremony to be held at Parliament House in March. Ms Davies said she was proud to nominate Ms Refalo as the Mulgoa 2015 Local Woman of the Year. Continued pg. 15.

FROM THE EDITOR
Welcome to our first edition for 2015! I know the Christmas and New Year period raced by in a blur for many, and here we are, already facing what February has in store. The New Year period is always my favourite. A great time to refocus and set goals. The perfect opportunity to take onboard any challenges from years gone by, learn and grow from them. It's these challenges that have made us stronger and more determined to reach our newest goals. We return with all of our regular columns that provide a great wealth of information across a broad cross-section of topics. It's back to school for many students across our community, and who can forget that very first introduction to BIG school? Starting school is an important step in a child's life, refer to page 9 for some handy tips at this pivotal time . Many of our readers are small business owners, or know someone that is. For those in business, the start of a New Year is the ideal time to take it to the next level. Michael Todd (Business Advisor) provides some handy tips on page 19, to help make 2015 your year! This year, the District Gazette will be bringing you some exciting GIVEAWAYS. We've kicked this off with nothing less than a standout offer from our friends at Luddenham Raceway, read all about them (and our giveaway) on page 11. Enjoy your Community News, and remember, "If you change nothing, nothing changes".

FAITH – ANGLICAN PARISH of MULGOA Minister Matt Olliffe P: 4774 0422 M: 0401 958 161 Sunday Service times: 8:30am St Thomas’ Mulgoa. 10:30am St Paul’s Warragamba. 7pm Glenmore Park Anglican Church.
To Ring or Not to Ring: That is the Question St Thomas’ Anglican Church Mulgoa has a functioning church bell. I ring it usually after solemnizing a wedding. There is a ‘knack’ to ringing it. A campanologist has warned me that wrapping the rope around my wrist does place me at risk of losing my hand if the bell flies off, so I’ve modified my grip. I don’t think I’ve ever rung it Sunday morning for our 8:30am service, but I could do so, as a community service. I could ring it 10 minutes before the service, as a reminder to the village of Mulgoa to rise for Church, as was done in English village churches in past centuries. It would say, ‘Hey Mulgoa, Christians are gathering together to pray, to hear God’s word, to praise Jesus Christ who died and rose for us, and to encourage one another. Come and join us’. If you live in Mulgoa, would you like that reminder every Sunday morning at, say, 8:15am? Duke University in the US recently announced that they would have a Muslim Call to Prayer (the ‘adhan’) issued from its Church Bell-Tower every Friday from 1pm for three minutes. While some non-Muslims welcomed the announcement as an expression of social unity, after a social media protest where some Christians objected, the authorities at Duke University decided to issue the adhan not from the bell-tower, but from the steps in front of the chapel. (http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/grade-point/ wp/2015/01/16/after-controversy-muslim-call-to-prayersounds-from-front-of-duke-university-chapel/) The ‘adhan’, or ‘call to prayer’ is a loud summons issued in the Arabic language multiple times from the minaret of a mosque five times a day for the mandatory worship of Allah in Muslim majority areas. In modern times it is issued from a high point of the mosque using a microphone and modern amplification. It starts off with repeated calls of ‘Allahu akbar’, meaning ‘Allah is Great’. I’m not a Muslim. I don’t believe in Allah. I believe in the Trinity and worship Father, Son and Holy Spirit as one God, a teaching which Islam rejects. I don’t believe in the Jesus of Islam. With historic Christianity, I believe that (1) Jesus is God’s Son, (2) Jesus is God who became human, (3) Jesus died on the cross for our sins, and (4) Jesus rose again to defeat death (John 1:1-18, Romans 1:4; 4:25; 5:6-9; 1 Corinthians 15:1-8). Islam rejects these beliefs. Muslims should be free to do so and criticize my beliefs. I should be free to criticize theirs. Atheists should be free to criticize everyone, and be happy to receive criticism in return. It is not ‘tolerance’ to say that everyone is equally right. Saying ‘All religions are equally right’ is nonsense. Both Islam and Christianity can’t be right at the same time. Both might be

wrong, and Atheism or Judaism might be correct instead. Tolerance is to say, ‘I believe that you are wrong, but I still think you should be free to believe and practice what you like, so long as it does not infringe on other people’s freedoms’. Maturity will allow us to respectfully disagree with one another, to say so, and not join in worship practices we think are mistaken. I as a Christian, and Australian citizen owe respect, tolerance and love to those with whom I disagree. Jesus taught us to love our neighbor as ourselves, and to love our enemies. But that is different to agreeing. That to my mind is what freedom of religion and freedom of speech means. When I stayed in Malta for 5 weeks many years ago, recordings of church bells were played at different times to tell people to come to church. I got used to it over time. But it didn’t make me go to mass, because I reject transubstantiation and do not worship the consecrated bread. So I ignored that invitation. If the ‘adhan’ was broadcast 5 times a day in my suburb, I am sure I would feel like a stranger in a neighbourhood I think of as my home. Those community activities would not resonate with me. But my alienation would probably be nothing like how the Aboriginals felt when English settlers came into Sydney harbour 200 years ago, or how the Palestinians feel since the establishment of the state of Israel, necessitated by Hitler’s genocide. And no doubt some of the community activities I support, like Community Christmas Carols, do nothing for others, or positively annoy them. Yet, in our country, I am free to organize them. Others likewise should have those freedoms. And still others should not have their freedom of quiet enjoyment of their own property infringed. God is in control of the movements of people in his world (Acts 17:26). Therefore, it is fruitless to protest that Muslim people shouldn’t live in my suburb. God in his sovereignty has allowed it. They are as Australian as I am. They should be afforded the same rights and protections of other citizens. In any case, as much as I love Australia, my primary loyalty is to Jesus Christ, and my citizenship as a Christian is in heaven (Philippians 3:20; Hebrews 11:8-10, 12:22-24). If I am made to feel like a stranger in my own country, then that is only what many other Christians around the world feel, not to mention God’s people in the bible. St Thomas’ Mulgoa was built in 1838 with a bell-tower and working bell to let the Mulgoa township know about church on Sundays. Do you think I should use it for that purpose? Matt Olliffe, Minister, Anglican Parish of Mulgoa (Article submitted and written by)

Pastors Corner As we journey into 2015, no doubt some of you will have set New Year’s Resolutions; perhaps to get fitter and lose weight, to make new friends, to travel and visit new places, to improve your work situation, perhaps to work less, to enjoy life more and to spend more time with loved ones, to start a hobby, to study and complete an educational course, to undertake a building renovation or to improve your home. Whatever your resolution, I expect that some of you, may have already broken and discarded those good intentions. So what is it about us that we find it hard to follow through? For some of us we are fearful of failure, for example trying to lose weight and to exercise requires so much discipline. As we are challenged to have an extra piece of pie for desert, somehow our resolve to achieve our resolution is pushed into the background. So should we just give up, in that way we overcome any chance that we will fail? I read an amusing story, which I will share with you: ‘There was a very cautious man who never laughed or played; He never risked, he never tried, he never sang or prayed. And when he one day he passed away, His insurance was denied; for since he never really lived, they claimed he never died.’ We all have doubts and fears, but we are not meant to live in fear, or to give into challenges just because they are hard. I have found that faith in Jesus Christ has enabled me to go forward and to face my fears. 2 Timothy 1:7 says: “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of sound mind. May 2015, bring you great peace, love and joy, as you overcome your fears, through trusting in Jesus, our Lord and Saviour. God bless, Lyndon Rumsey (Article submitted and written by)

Warragamba Anzac Day Centenary Commemoration It will be 100 years since the 25th April 1915 when two divisions of assault troops, mostly from the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps made the fateful night landing at Anzac Cove. Although they failed to achieve their objectives, the ANZACs formed a beachhead and their courage, endurance and mateship has been recognized ever since. Over two thousand of their men were killed or wounded, together with at least a similar number of Turkish casualties. The Warragamba Anzac Day committee has been allocated $18,422 from the Federal Government Anzac Centenary grant for building an ANZAC Commemorative Wall with lighting behind the Cenotaph in the park and also for a flag pole at Warragamba School. The townships of Warragamba and Silverdale did not exist at that time. The memorial plaque in St Thomas Church Mulgoa lists 46 local men and women who served in the First World War and their names will be on a new plaque at the Cenotaph. Any local family that has a relative who served in the Australian forces during the First World War can purchase a personal plaque to go on the back of the wall. The application details are available from Elaine 0431 926 936 or Margaret 0407 230 499. Warragamba park has been improved recently as Wollondilly Council have installed several new seats and the new trees they planted are flourishing with the help of the Men’s Shed. The Warragamba Anzac Day ceremony has been growing
every year and it is expected that this year will see even more people attend. The march starts at 11am at the neighbourhood centre and is led by the Blacktown City Pipe band. Everyone is welcome and please contact the committee if you want to be included in the march The names taken from the memorial plaque in St Thomas Church Mulgoa are listed below. If anyone has another name to consider please contact the committee.

PARENTS CORNER Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) NepeanStudent-Wellbeing Worker – Mulgoa Public School Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services Ph: 0409 986 121 Centre: 4721 8520 Blog: http://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com
I hear from many parents who are confused about their role in raising their kids. There is so much noise these days about parenting – from social media, friends, family, school, television. Some of it is misleading and not based on the research, some of it is cruel and unusual. How does one make sense of it all? Parents cry out “we didn’t get an instruction manual with this kid!. To which I reply “your child is the instruction manual. If you listen to your child, observe him or her, look at the situation from where he or she is standing, it all becomes a lot clearer. And parenting becomes a whole lot easier. When I talk with groups of children or individual children, and I ask them if they can talk to their parents about what is troubling them, more often than not the children say that their parents don’t listen to them, they dismiss them, or they lecture them. Unfortunately, a lot of kids don’t see their parents as someone they can go to and feel heard and understood. They don’t see their parents as helpful or supportive. Kids tell me what their parents say to them when they try to go to them with a problem – “suck it up princess or “build a bridge and get over it. When I ask parents “who do you want your child to go to when he or she has a problem?, they always say “me. But if you were a child and were told repeatedly “don’t bother me with this now or “get over it or “you’ll be fine would you go back for more? I swear that if every parent learnt to listen to their child, I would be out of a job. And I would happily pack shelves at a supermarket knowing that our kids are healthy (physically, emotionally,, socially, intellectually). I know that parents don’t do this on purpose. Every parent wants the best for their child. More often than not, we don’t listen to our kids because their big emotions are too much for us to hear. So we try to jolly them up, redirect them away from the pain, push them to see the brighter side. We think that if our children are having an emotion then it’s our job to toughen them up. But feeling heard and understood is one of the most precious things a human can experience, especially when it’s coming from the most important people in your lives – your parents or carers. The path to easier parenting is empathy – standing and walking in your child’s shoes. The next step is acknowledging how they are feeling about something - hearing them out. You are not always going to agree with them, and you are still the parent, so you make the big decisions. But quite often, children can surprise us with their wisdom and insight.

Netball - Friends Through Sport Penrith Sports Netball Club was one of the first clubs to join the Penrith district association back in 1972 by Joan Butriss. Joan headed the committee until sadly she passed away from cancer. It was then her daughter Kim took up the reigns and continued on with her legacy of providing a family fun atmosphere where their motto was and still is “friends through sportâ€? The club is lucky enough to have dedicated and experienced coaches who teach the girls new skills each week. They love to keep up to date with what is happening in the netball community and bring that spirit to our club games. Penrith Sports also have National A badged umpires who guide and work with the young girls who would like to umpire games. Mel has been with the club for many years as a player and an umpire. She plays at state level and her level of enthusiasm is unmatched. Back to School can be a Stressful Time The books are covered, the bags are packed and the uniform is neatly ironed and ready for the first day of school. For some children and young people, however, these practical things are not likely to be worrying them the most. The stress and anxiety some young people feel at the start of the school year can be overwhelming. Those first days can be some of the most exciting but Kids Helpline General Manager Wendy Protheroe said for others, this time is a scary and frustrating one. Ms Protheroe said transitioning into school is one of the most important stages of a child’s development. “This is the time that sets a bar in terms of how children develop coping strategies, problem solving skills and ways of seeing and understanding the world outside of their family,” Ms Protheroe said. “They may be starting Prep, their first year of senior school or going into Year 12. Whatever the stage, it can sometimes be overwhelming with new challenges and uncertainties.” As Australia’s only national 24/7 counselling and support service for young people, Ms Protheroe said Kids Helpline was there to help. The service has compiled a list of tips for parents to support their children during this time. Kids Helpline’s Top Five Back to
School tips are: 1. Be excited about the change. If you are enthusiastic and confident, your children are more likely to be as well. 2. Listen to your children. Let them know you’re interested in what they’re worrying about and what they’re excited about. 3. Plan - have uniforms and lunches ready the night before to avoid the early morning rush and any unnecessary stress. 4. If possible, visit the new school with your child before the first day to familiarise with the layout including bathrooms, lunch areas and playgrounds. 5. Start and maintain daily routines that will add structure and make your child more at ease (eg) dropping your child off at school at the same time each morning. Ms Protheroe said it was important for parents to make themselves available to provide support at critical times like starting back at school. However, Kids Helpline was there to help at any stage. Children and young people can call Kids Helpline about a range of issues, from making friends to starting high school, at any time. Kids Helpline, Australia’s only national 24/7 counselling and support service for young people, provides 24 hour counselling services to young people aged 5 to 25 years – free call 1800 55 1800 or online at www.kidshelpline.com.au.

It’s no doubt that Western Sydney is fast becoming the adventure capital of the state, with Luddenham Raceway opening for business in November, late last year. With two years of planning and eight months of construction, it’s the perfect place for the family to visit. “We wanted to create something for the whole family. Luddenham Raceway caters to adults and children with lots to enjoy” said Marketing and Promotions Manager Maria Vukmirica. Maria’s children Niki, Sascha and Simo also work at the business, making it very family oriented. There are two go kart tracks at the raceway, the ‘Pro Circuit’, a 600m asphalt track designed for the adults and a ‘Rookie Circuit’ designed for children aged from 8 through to learners. Prices start from $25 for 1x7 min race for kids aged 8-14 and $30 for 1x10 min race for adults 15 and over. There are over 30 go karts on offer to race, with participants able to access state-of-the-art electronic timing and lap times that are emailed and have Facebook integration. Luddenham Raceway also has facilities such as a function/meeting room, which make it ideal for corporate events. Honda Australia recently booked the venue to product test and train for their new CRV. There’s also a café and a party room onsite. With stage one complete, stage two construction will include a Paintball Park, whilst stage three will see a Car Circuit (CAMS Category C) and Driver Training Facility built. Both stages are due for completion later this year. Luddenham Raceway will be supporting the University of Western Sydney during ‘O Week’ this year, giving all students 10% off and
donating free track time for the university’s Solar Car. During this time, they will have stands at the Penrith, Parramatta, Bankstown and Campbelltown Campuses, with buses taking the students to the Raceway for promotions. “We get a kick out of seeing people happy. Seeing the smiles on their faces are priceless” said Maria. Luddenham Raceway are located at 849 Luddenham Road, Luddenham. Phone is (02)9834 2366 and email is info@ luddenhamraceway.com. WHAT’S COOKING
Easy Valentine's Day Cookies Super Easy • Time 40 min
Richard Cadbury, of Cadbury cream egg fame, invented the first box of Valentine’s Day themed chocolates in the 1880s. Source: http://www.popsugar.com/food/Valentine-Day-Fun-Facts-137983
Ingredients • White melting chocolate • Wafer cookies • Variety of Valentine's Day sprinkles • Parchment or wax paper Method 1. Start by melting your chocolate as direct on package. I found this great tub of marshmallow flavoured melting chocolate that you pop right in the microwave. I loved the easy clean up! 2. While you are waiting for the chocolate to melt, gather your sprinkles and cookies. Line a baking sheet with parchment or wax paper. This will prevent sticking while the cookies dry. 3. Once chocolate is melted, dip the top half of a wafer cookie. 4. Quickly sprinkle on your chosen sprinkles. 5. Place on prepared baking sheet to dry. Is WEIGHT LOSS one of Your Goals This Year? Then Triple Your Chances!! With the festive season over, getting back into routine often means slipping back into old habits, and this can be setting yourself up for failure. In order to achieve your 2015 goals you need to have a real plan. According to a study by Columbia University, people who determined a plan of action to achieve their goals almost tripled their chances of success! ‘SMART’ goal setting allows you to create such a plan, and thus transform your ‘lose weight’ resolution into reality. Here are the 5 simple steps: 1. Specific - define your goal eg I will lose 10kg through good nutrition and exercise 2. Measurable - break down your goal eg I will lose 0.5-1kg per week 3. Accountable - share your goal with a supportive family member, friend or practitioner 4. Realistic - keep your goal realistic eg to lose 25kg in 12 weeks is neither real nor smart! 5. Timeframe - set a deadline for your goal eg If I lose 0.5-1kg per week, I can hit my 10kg goal in 10-12 weeks Losing weight can be done many different ways, but gaining health and feeling great when you get to your goal is ultimately what we all want. A good health practitioner can offer support and advice to fast track you. YOU CAN DO THIS! The perfect time is NOW!

Mulgoa’s Local Woman of the Year Announced “It is truly a privilege to be able to acknowledge the great work in our community of women like Ms Refalo,” Ms Davies said. “I am also pleased the Minister has come to Western Sydney to recognise Ms Refalo for her voluntary work within the community.” “I am astounded that I have been recognised for this award. I feel so honoured and appreciative just to have been considered for this award and to have the Minister for Women come all the way out here to western Sydney to personally present this to me has left me speechless. Thank you so much” said Frances Refalo on receiving the award. Frances Refalo has dedicated the last 15 years of her personal life as a very active volunteer supporting her local football community. She has performed in a number of official roles, many simultaneously, culminating in her successful election last November as the new President of the Nepean Football Association (NFA). The NFA governs 32 football clubs in the Nepean District with over 11,000 registered players and officials. Frances is the first woman to be elected President of the Association since it was founded 54 years ago in 1961. From 1999-2005 Frances held various management committee positions of Glenmore Park Football Club, including the role of Secretary, Competition Secretary, Registrar and Women’s Co-ordinator. In 2003 Frances was elected onto the board of the NFA and has held various positions over the last 11 years, including Women’s coordinator, Treasurer and now as President of the Association. In 2008, Frances joined the coaching ranks of the Nepean Dragons, a Sub-Committee of the NFA, which provides football activities to children and adults with special needs, imparting the joys of football to both players and their families. Throughout these last 15 years Frances has also volunteered as a team coach, manager and club referee and still finds time to play as a registered player as well. Frances is a role model volunteer in her local community and is to be commended for her unwavering devotion, dedication and sacrifice to support her community in the field of football. The most popular theory about Valentine's Day origin is that Emperor Claudius II didn't want Roman men to marry during wartime. Bishop Valentine went against his wishes and performed secret weddings. For this, Valentine was jailed and executed. While in jail he wrote a note to the Jailor's Daughter signing it

Fashion Parade Report The Rotary Club of Wallacia-Mulgoa Valley held a Fashion Parade Fundraiser at Mulgoa Valley Receptions 1440 Mulgoa Road, Mulgoa in November last year to raise money for Jill Baptist who lost her left leg above the knee when she and her dogs were hit by an out of control motorcyclist during their morning walk along Bents Basic Road, Wallacia. Consequently she spent 8 weeks in hospital and has had to endure over 17 operations. One of her dogs was killed instantly and the other had to be put down in the days following. The day was a very successful and fun event with around 70 guests who enjoyed a fashion parade presented by Dianne Wilson of Di-Namic Fashions, some bubbly on arrival and a lovely afternoon of freshly made scones and tea with compliments of Mulgoa Receptions. Raffles and auctions were also held during the day and a percentage of sales from Di-Namic Fashions and various stalls added to our fundraising tally. There were smiles all around when our Club presented a cheque for $3,000 to Jill at our last meeting in November, 2014 at Mulgoa Receptions We wish to acknowledge the following sponsors and donations: Super Cellars Mulgoa; Di Namic Fashions; Rotary Club of Wollondilly North; Margaret Fowler; Angelic Hair Salon Mulgoa; Mulgoa Receptions; Orchard Belle Hairdressing Luddenham, Friends and members of Wallacia Mulgoa Rotary Club. Jill Baptist said “that she would like to take this opportunity to thank the Rotary Club of Wallacia Mulgoa and in particular Jan Bradley and Jenny Mladineo the organisers of the event who did a great job, she was very touched that people cared enough to do this for her. “

Refinancing. Is it Really Worthwhile? Have interest rates fallen since you took out your mortgage? Has your financial situation improved? Would you like to access your equity for an investment, renovations or to consolidate debts? Refinancing can often be a good financial decision. You could save money on repayments or free up funds for other purposes. Refinancing can sometimes even let you take advantage of more competitive loan products that help you pay off your home sooner! But before you rush in, you should talk to us. We’ll help you to add up the costs involved and decide whether or not refinancing is the right move for you considering your personal circumstances and financial situation. In some cases, refinancing your mortgage could save you money, but in other cases, it could end up costing you more. What is refinancing? Refinancing is the process of paying off an existing mortgage by creating a new one. You can switch lenders entirely, or switch to a more suitable loan with the same lender. It could include combining a primary mortgage with a second mortgage, so that you only have one mortgage to pay and reducing the overall costs. What costs are involved? Understanding the costs involved with refinancing is an important part of deciding if this strategy is right for you. Sometimes, the cost of refinancing can cancel out any savings you might make on a lower interest rate. Talk to us about your goals If you’re thinking about refinancing for any reason, then it pays to talk to us about your goals and the best way to go about achieving them. Refinancing might be a good idea for you if your financial situation has improved since you first took out your loan, as this may help you get a better rate.

So what will you CHANGE this New Year? Michael Todd Business Advisor Youngest ever winner of Best BEC Advisor Australia Penrith, Blue Mountains and Hawkesbury BEC
Twelve months from now, people will be looking back on 2015 and seeing the results of the choices they're making now. For some people, it will look pretty much like 2014. The same story, just one year older. It must be the case for most people. Another year, and more unfulfilled ‘New Year's Resolutions’. It is said that around 8% of these get achieved. If you had a good 2014, how can you build on that to make you and your business stronger in 2015. If you didn’t have a good 2014, what can you change or do to ensure it goes better for you? You have the most control over yourself. The blame game never works. So what do we need to do this year to make it a good one? Be proactive. The key to progress is taking control of it yourself. It is very important to be aware of what's going on around you as well. Stay abreast of industry changes and keep one eye on competition. Be confident and commit to your goals. A lack of confidence is one of the biggest obstacles to achieving both personal and business goals. You need to believe in your abilities, build on your strengths and address weaknesses when planning. Commit to doing whatever it takes to get you where you want to be, even if it involves some risk.
Start every day prepared and engaged. If you want to advance, you need to demonstrate that you're truly engaged in your business. It's not enough to physically be there at your desk every day. Show up mentally prepared and ready to take action. Being active, tackling tasks and planning ahead are the characteristics you need to take the initiative in your business. Use technology to help you. Business will continue to be driven by better business technologies. Employees also want technology to help them be more efficient and productive so embrace that. It may even lead them to do more with less and work smarter, not harder. So here’s to a new year, if that is what you need for a fresh start mentally. You have control to make sure everything comes together to make your goals a reality.
We see over 1,200 businesses each year, of all shapes and sizes, helping our clients achieve results like no other. If you haven't engaged with our BEC for our award winning business advice then now is a good time. PAWS A WHILE With Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital 377 Wentworth Rd, Orchard Hills Ph: 4736 2027
$2100 Guide Dog Donation from the Santa Photos with Pets Santa Claus visited Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital during December 2014 and photos were taken with your pets. We all enjoyed watching your pets get dressed up with Santa hats and scarves and sitting on Santa’s knee for a photo. With a lot of laughs and giggles, we took many cute Santa photos. Thank you for all of the donations for the photos. With your great support, we raised $2100 for The Guide Dogs NSW/ACT!! Wow!! This was our best year yet!! We all had lots of fun and The Guide Dogs get a great donation. Thanks again for participating. Too much fun!! The Guide Dogs NSW/ACT Guide Dogs NSW/ACT exists to enhance the quality of life of people living with blindness or impaired vision, by assisting in their achievement of independence through access and mobility with the use of Guide Dogs. It takes nearly two years to develop a playful pup into a responsible Guide Dog. Puppy Raising New puppies arrive at the Guide Dogs Centre at the age of approximately eight weeks. They work with purebred Labradors, Golden Retrievers and Labrador/ Golden Retriever crosses. These breeds are calm, loyal and intelligent, and have a proven track record as Guide Dogs. The pups are then placed with families that have been specially selected by Guide Dogs staff. They are called "puppy raisers". Over the next 12 months, these families will provide the pups with basic social skills, obedience and lots of fun! The dogs are visited regularly by the Puppy Raising Officers, who monitor their development and take them on training walks on their local area. In addition, the pups spend time at the Guide Dogs Centre, to help them become familiar with their next home. If you are interested in becoming a puppy raiser,
contact The Guide Dogs at www.guidedogs.com.au. Guide Dog Training When the pups are about 14 months old, they return to the Guide Dogs Centre. The instructors carefully assess every puppy on several long walks. Prospective Guide Dogs must be eager to work, with good concentration and initiative. They must also control the temptation to be distracted by other animals. Puppies that are selected to become Guide Dogs undergo an intensive five-month program to learn the complex skills required for their new job. They begin with simple commands and progress to more challenging tasks. These skills include: • Walking in a straight line without sniffing • Walking on the left-hand side slightly ahead of the trainer • Stopping at all kerbs • Waiting for a command before crossing roads • Stopping at the top and bottom of stairs • Avoiding obstacles at head height • Avoiding spaces too narrow for a person and a dog to walk through side by side • Boarding and travelling on all forms of public transport • Taking the trainer to a lift • Laying quietly for some time, particularly at a workplace or in restaurants • Refusing commands that may lead the trainer into danger - for example, if the trainer instructs the Guide Dog to walk them into a hole, the dog should refuse to walk forward when commanded. As training progresses, Guide Dogs learn to travel through confusing and crowded areas, such as shopping centres and busy city streets. In fact, experienced Guide Dogs can lead their users to a list of destinations. As you can imagine, this requires careful teaching so the dog learns each command in a complex sequence of events. Despite the hard work involved, Guide Dogs have a rewarding job indeed. These intelligent dogs lead an interesting life and enjoy its many challenges. Please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. Call 4736 2027 to make an appointment. Check us out on Facebook and online at www.orchardhillsvet.com.au.

Pool Safety
With the warmer weather, Wollondilly Shire Council has noticed an increase in the number of inflatable and prefabricated above ground swimming pools being erected on properties without adequate safety fencing. Inflatable and prefabricated DIY pools have become popular alternatives to the cost of a full size pool and many are installed without first consulting Council. These pools pose the same risk to children as larger pools and may still require approval if they have the capability to hold more than 2,000 litres. All swimming
pools in NSW must be registered on the NSW Swimming Pool Register. Penalties apply for pools that are installed without approval, where a pool is not registered or where a childresistant barrier is not installed or maintained. In the Royal Life Saving Society’s National Drowning Report 2014 it is noted that 70% of children aged 0-4 years that drowned during the period of August 2013 to July 2014 did so in a swimming pool, this is a 9% increase on the previous year. Council is continuing its audit of existing backyard swimming pool safety barriers which has revealed an approximately 90% failure rate. If members of the public have concerns with the suitability of their pool safety provisions Council provides a ‘self-checklist’ and encourages residents to check their pools. Copies are available from our Customer Service counter or at www.wollondilly.nsw. gov.au, additionally Council provides a service where pool fencing and isolation barriers can be checked for compliance by authorised officers for a fee. If you have any questions relating to pool isolation requirements, please contact Council’s Building Team on (02) 4677 1100 for assistance between 8am and 10am weekdays.
