Baines Hill A Resident Advisory Group was established to enable ongoing consultation and to review traffic issues. Recommendations from the group have included improving the skid resistance of the road and improving drainage to minimise water running across the road, which will be addressed in the upcoming work. The RTA reduced the speed zone from 80kph to 60kph in November last year in response to requests from Council and the community. Council is continuing to liaise with Integral Energy to improve visibility on the bends and lighting improvement plans are now well under way. To date, the recent improvements have dramatically reduced traffic accidents on this section of Silverdale Rd.

Weir upgrade Minister for Water Phil Costa has announced the award of a $17.6 million contract to upgrade 10 weirs along the Hawkesbury-Nepean River. Cataract, Cordeaux, Avon and Nepean dams will all be releasing new environmental flows at the beginning of 2010 to improve the health of the river,” Mr Costa said.“To make sure the environmental flows can make it all the way downstream, we first need tomake improvements to the weirs along the river so they don’t act like barriers to the flows. The weir at Wallacia will have a environmental release outlet installed with a new vertical-slot fishway. Works is scheduled to start in a month, with each weir taking between four and eight months to complete. The weirs will continue to provide water for local irrigation while also allowing the environmental flows and fish to move through the HawkesburyNepean River.

Expecting a baby? Childbirth Education Courses & workshops providing positive, up-to-date information about labour, birth & beyond • Comfortable environment • Personalised service • Relaxed approach • Small group sizes Contact Janet Phillips on 0415 890 682 or 4737 9085 Visit our website www.birthwise.net.au

Expecting a baby is a time of great excitement and anticipation. Most expectant parents want to know how to make childbirth more comfortable, and what their options are. Unfortunately our impression of childbirth is often influenced by negative or incorrect information, causing unnecessary anxiety. Childbirth education classes can help demystify childbirth so that expectant parents can make informed decisions. Janet Phillips of BirthWise became a midwife in the mid-80s and has been a childbirth educator in the Penrith area for over 15 years. Janet’s classes are conducted in relaxed settings to provide a more personalised service. “In all my experience as a midwife and childbirth educator, my greatest teachers have been birthing mums. Their experiences have helped me understand the birth process more. My introduction to calmbirth® was through a friend whom I supported during the birth of her baby. I was already a childbirth educator, but her birth amazed me. She progressed through labour and birth in the most peaceful and calm way with the aid of the relaxation and breathing skills she had been practising. So I resolved to find out

Warragamba Preschool Inc.

more about this and trained to become a calmbirth® practitioner.” calmbirth® is regarded by many as one of the best preparation courses available for birth. Imagine being able to approach the birth of your baby feeling calm and confident. The calmbirth® method of childbirth education draws on the theory that anxiety and fear produces unnecessary tension and pain during childbirth. calmbirth® techniques tap into the inner resources we all naturally possess to help reduce anxiety and fear with the support of simple relaxation, visualisation and breathing exercises. As the population of Sydney grows there is increased pressure on our native fauna that rely on bushland areas for a home and food. The good news is there is something you can do to help. Wollondilly Shire Mayor, Cr Michael Banasik says “Attracting native fauna to your backyard is easy to do and vitally important to help species survive in our urban environment.” “Planting native plants will not only attract an array of birds and small mammals, but will also reduce your water bill, as native plants require less water than exotic species,” said Cr Banasik.“Every household is entitled to three free plants per year from the Wollondilly Community Nursery to help in the creation of your native garden sanctuary.” In addition to planting native species to attract wildlife to your backyard, you can also: Provide water in bird baths or ponds; Provide nesting and wildlife friendly materials; and Provide protection and shelter. Having native birds in your backyard is a natural form of insect control and is also wonderful for your children to learn about biodiversity and how plants and animals interact with each other. “It is important that cats and dogs are prevented from attacking native species by keeping them under effective control at all times,” said Cr Banasik. For more information please contact Council’s Environment Officer on 4677 1122 or visit the Sustainable Wollondilly page on Council’s website.

At a meeting in June 2008 a group of people expressed a willingness to pursue the concepts embraced by the men’s shed movement. A Steering Group formed and WOLCOMS was born. WOLCOMS aims to establish multiple Men’s Sheds across the Wollondilly Shire. Each Shed will have at its heart the guiding principles of WOLCOMS, these include: • The promotion of men’s health and well-being through shared learning and activities • The promotion of connection, communication, companionship and peer support • The provision of a safe, comfortable, welcoming & equitable, meeting place If you are interested in being involved in a Men’s shed come along to the Warradale Men’s Shed on Friday 26th June from 10am-1pm at Annex Warragamba Town Hall. For more info contact Leanne at Warragamba Silverdale Neighbourhood Centre on 4774 1273 or call Bob re WOLCOMS on 4677 8261.

Orchard Hills Defence Base THE future of the Orchard Hills defence base is being considered in a parliamentary white paper. Parliamentary secretary for defence support Mike Kelly visited the base on Tuesday and said the site was “very important” in the government’s defence strategies. “It’s a very important part of our defence force establishment,” Mr Kelly

said. “There are about 100 permanent defence force personnel and 500 employees all together. “It’s future is being considered in the context of the defence white paper. It’s obviously a site we take a great deal of interest in.” The Royal Australian Air Force defence facility covers an area of 2029ha and is primarily used for storage and distribution. Mr Kelly has been in talks with Federal Lindsay MP David Bradbury about the site’s future. “It’s one of the largest providers of jobs in our community,” Mr Bradbury said. “It also has significant environmental and heritage values. I’d certainly like the site to play the critical role that it is for the national defence effort.”

Kaleidoscope Music Guitar Tuition Rohan Hotchkiss has been teaching guitar for 7 years and has invented this simple way of teaching guitar and has published a tuition book. Kaleidoscope tuition is the fastest way to learn music by using an easy colour code method. It works by placing colour coded stickers on the instrument which match the colour coded manuscript.

A Community Bank® branch for Warragamba and Districts? The people of the Warragamba area may soon have a greater choice of local banking facilities and the chance to support the local community. A number of community leaders have been holding discussions with Bendigo Bank for several months to ascertain the feasibility of establishing a Community Bank® branch in the Warragamba area. Under the Bendigo Bank model, the community would, in effect, own and benefit from the earnings of the Community Bank® branch. Key benefits of a Community Bank® branch include: • The potential for local traders to increase their business because people buy, shop and bank locally • The potential to generate an ongoing funding stream for community and charitable projects • Longer trading hours to suit the needs of the local community - including Saturday mornings • A local bank manager with first-hand knowledge of his or her client’s business affairs and a commitment to establishing long-term relationships with all customers and the community • The ability to call your local branch directly and talk to branch staff Local identity Joe Galea said Bendigo Bank had outperformed other banks and building societies in customer satisfaction surveys over the past decade. “We have established a working committee to navigate through the preliminary steps for setting up our own Community Bank® branch in the Warragamba area,” Mr Galea said. “It’s early days yet, and we need to

know that we have the community support for it to be a success,” he said. “Our Community Bank® branch will be established through purchasing shares in a local community company. “The company would be managed by a Board of Directors - representatives of our community – and the entire community, along with individual shareholders, would benefit from a percentage of profits from a successful bank branch.” A public meeting will be held in early June to discuss the model, the next steps and how you can help us make this a reality. To learn more or lend your support, contact Joe Galea on 4774 1283 or email timhdwwarr@bigpond,com.

Finalists in Design a Flag Recently a competition was held to design a flag for Wollondilly. Residents were invited to submit a design and many entries were received from throughout the Shire. “All designs submitted were of a very high standard and after much consideration Council and the Australia Day Award Committee have chosen four finalists in the competition,” said Mayor, Cr Michael Banasik. These four finalists are now on display for public comment to assist the Australia Day Award Committee in the decision of the winning entry. The locations include Warragamba/Silverdale Neighbourhood Centre and Council’s Website. If you would like to comment on the final designs please complete Council’s feedback form and return to Council by Friday 5 June 2009 at 4pm. Feedback forms are available at the locations listed above or can be downloaded from Council’s website on www.wollondilly.nsw.gov.au.

$1.35mil for bush fire preparation works Emergency Services Minister Steve Whan has welcomed additional funding for bush fire mitigation works across NSW. The $1.35 million from the Bush Fire Mitigation Programme will fund more than 150 projects across NSW, which will help improve protection for communities. “This is important work that will take place in the lead up to next bush fire season,” Mr Whan said. “The additional funding, which comes from a cooperative arrangement with State, Federal and Local Government, will see work on a total of 158 projects across NSW. “These works include the preparation, clearing and maintenance of fire trails, which can improve access for fire crews during major incidents. “Fire trails also provide a safe area for fire crews to work from during hazard reduction activities, which are now underway across NSW”. “With the cooler conditions, fire agencies and land managers are already well advanced in their preparations for next fire season, including hazard reduction activities. “This year 87 per cent of planned bushfire protection works have been completed. “Those works have protected more than 137,000 properties with an estimated value of more than $67 billion dollars. “During the same period, more than 1100 targeted hazard reduction burning and mechanical works have been completed. “There is also a role for the entire community to play in reducing the risk from bush fires.“Residents should also be taking the time to ensure their properties are prepared in the lead up to next fire season,” he said.
