Brittanie is Mulgoa’s Own Voice

Local Mulgoa Resident Brittanie Shipway

This year’s The Voice Australia has seen some of the most amazing talent showcased yet, and none more so than Mulgoa’s own Brittanie Shipway. Australian audiences were captivated by Brittanie’s mesmerizing performance of ‘On My Own’ from the musical Les Miserables, that lead her to choose International Pop Superstar Kylie Minogue to be part of Team Kylie. “This whole experience has been fantastic. It was like a very intense workshop. I learnt so much from Kylie and the coaches, but also from the producers and everyone behind the scenes. So much goes into a show as big as The Voice Australia!” said Brittanie. No one has been more proud of Brittanie than her grandfather, whom she affectionately calls ‘Pa’, who she lives with in Mulgoa. Her inspiration behind auditioning for the show was also an opportunity to honour the memory of her late grandmother and idol, Doreen Shipway. “I’ve been singing since I was six years old. I’ve been very lucky to have the support of family and friends from the very beginning. Without them, I would never have continued...Pg.6.

FROM THE EDITOR

Here we are, at August! And what a hive of activity it has been. Many wonderful events and milestones have taken place in the last month, with many more on the cards for the months ahead. As the headlines of the terrible MH17 tragedy fill our newspapers, news feeds and daily conversations; our hearts hang heavy and our thoughts go out to all of those involved with loved ones abroad. Our cover story details the remarkable achievement of one of our very own local residents Brittanie Shipway. What a talented young lady she is! Last month, I was fortunate enough to spend some time with another local and phenomenal individual, Dianne Rapa, Owner of Admire Group, with a rare opportunity to get ‘Up Close & Personal’ read all about her newest venture on page 9. This month, Mulgoa Public School is hosting their Country Market Day, with many exciting stalls, events and activities in store. Be sure to join in on all the action, more on page 11. Next month we will bring you the latest and greatest with all that’s in-store for the Leura Gardens Festival; and don’t forget Father’s Day, the first Sunday of September! Sometimes, when things are falling apart; they may actually be falling into place. Enjoy your Community News!

FAITH – ANGLICAN PARISH of MULGOA Minister Matt Olliffe P: 4774 0422 M: 0401 958 161 Sunday Service times: 8:30am & 6.45pm St Thomas’ Mulgoa. 10:30am St Paul’s Warragamba

Christianity is Not for the Faint Hearted What is the cause you are giving your life for? Probably it is your family? Perhaps it might be doing something heroic? Perhaps it is just the grind of being part of the great industrial machine. Maybe it is desperately saving up for your retirement? Jesus Christ wants us to give up our lives for his sake. ‘For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me and for the gospel will save it’ (Mark 8:35). Jesus can only demand this because he is God in the flesh, and gave his life up his life as a sacrifice for our sins (John 1:1,14,18; Mark 10:45; 1 Peter 3:18; Romans 3:21-26; 8:3-4). There is cultural Christianity, and then there is following Jesus Christ. There is being a nice person and not doing too much too bad, and then there is living and dying for Jesus Christ. There is being a good bloke, and pleasing people, and then there is taking up your cross and following Jesus Christ. The two are very different things. Jesus tells a story of the parable of the soils. You can read it for yourself in Mark chapter 4. There are some people who think Christianity is irrelevant and don’t give it a second thought. They are the seed that fall on the path. And there are some people who live fruitful and productive Christian lives. They are the seed falling on the good soil. These two soils are very different, as different as chalk and cheese. But there are two other soils that look like true Christianity for a little while. These are the rocky soil and the thorns. In these two soils, persecution because of the word of God causes people to fall away, and the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth, and the desire for other things, make the message of Jesus and his Kingdom unfruitful. Those people don’t turn out to be real Christians, even though they looked like the real thing for a time. I am most worried about these two soils, both for myself and for others. If you think you’re standing firm, be careful lest you fall. However, God tells us he won’t let us be tested beyond what we can bear but will provide a way out (1 Corinthians 10). That is why we pray ‘Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil’. Perhaps you consider yourself a Christian. Perhaps you were baptised and confirmed, or even ordained. Perhaps you consider yourself very religious or upright or spiritual. Perhaps you have warm feelings about Jesus, that Jesus Christ has the truth, that he is God’s Son, or that he died for us. That is all nice, but it is not enough, and is not really what the bible means by trust or faith in Christ. Real, fair-dinkum Christianity involves renouncing our rebellion against God, our ignoring God, the emptiness of this current world, and our own sinful desires, and submitting to Christ Jesus who lived the perfect life we haven’t lived, died for our sins so that we don’t have to suffer hell for them, rose again as mighty Lord of the Universe, and is now seated at the right hand of God, from where he will come to judge the world. It involves putting all your eggs in the Jesus’ basket, who promises us His Spirit and a way to the Father. So many of you write on your census that you are a Christian of some sort. Yet so few of you actually turn up to church. Its like getting chosen for the Australian Test Cricket team, but

4

August 2014 www.mulgoagazette.com.au

not bothering to turn up to either practise or the game. This should not be. AA is for Alcoholics. GA is for gamblers. Weight watchers is for overweight people. And church is for rebellious sinful people who want Jesus to be their fair dinkum King. We get together to encourage each other to keep trusting Jesus and living his way. Its also a barracks where we hear God talk to us from his word, the Bible, and get equipped to live in a difficult environment. We pray for our world and ourselves. We sing praises to God. Its God’s family, with all the responsibilities and privileges that comes with that. Its not perfect, but it will be eventually. Jesus died to wash it clean. And in the mean time, we seek to offer our perishing world an alternative in which Jesus promises forgiveness and eternal life. Why don’t you join us. Matt Olliffe, Minister, Anglican Parish of Mulgoa

FAITH – WARRAGAMBA BAPTIST CHURCH Lyndon Rumsey P: 4774 1476 W: www.warragambabaptist.net Sunday Service: 9.30 am

This past week most people’s children have resumed their schooling, so during the day Warragamba seems a bit empty. No kids hanging around during the day, perhaps replaced by some more relaxed parents, who have survived another vacation break. For some children they are beginning the final half year of their secondary schooling, the Higher School Certificate is looming, and a whole new world of their future lives is imminent. For younger ones there is a lot more years of schooling to go. One of my daughters is a Primary School Teacher, so holidays have been a mixture of some relaxation and lots of preparation for the new term. But a new term is a reminder to us that children grow up very fast, that parental influence in shaping our children’s young lives, has a definitive life, and as parents we need to use this time very well. Some of my non-church going friends have told me in the past, that when their children grow up, they can choose for themselves, whether they want to learn about God or not. Whilst I understand their perspective, it does seem illogical in terms of an education. I didn’t keep my children out of English or Mathematics classes, or say to them, when you are older enough, you can choose to learn or not learn, about these subjects. Similarly, I didn’t allow them to choose whether they ate good food, bathed regularly or developed good sleep habits, cleaning your teeth was compulsory in my household. As a parent I made the decision for them, because I love them. An understanding of Jesus Christ, to me is an important part of any person’s education. Of course ultimately, each person must decide how important Jesus is to them. In Matthew 19:14 Jesus says, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these. As parents, do you hinder your children from knowing about Jesus? May I encourage you, to help your children to gain and understanding of who Jesus is, and what He has done for them. For you parents, continue to value, love and encourage each of your children or grand-children, but remember this time will pass quickly. God bless, Lyndon Rumsey (Ph: 0417174455) continued from...Pg.1.

Brittanie is Mulgoa’s Own Voice

gotten as far as I have in the industry she said. Despite all the media attention and legion of new fans, Brittanie continues to be grounded and is humbled by it all, “My life is incredibly normal. The only difference is how busy I am. My phone never stops ringing or buzzing with emails. I’m essentially running my own business where the product is... Me! How strange? explained Brittanie. Twenty one year old Brittanie appreciates all the support she received from people whilst she was on The Voice Australia, in particular the local community of Mulgoa Valley. “All I can say is THANK YOU for the incredible support you’ve shown me since I was a little girl. I’ve loved every minute of living in such a beautiful community. Who needs city living? Brittanie proudly said. Ms Shipway has chosen our local area to begin her ‘Cabaret’ show, who she hopes to tour with nationally. The show ‘Brittanie Shipway presents Cabaret’ will take place on Saturday 9th August at Wallacia Bowlo. From everyone here at the Mulgoa Valley Gazette, we say congratulations and wish you all the very best with your singing career.

Doing It For Cooper

Warragamba resident Cooper Hammond was born on the 8th May, 2013. He was born a healthy little boy. On day 2 of his life, his parents, Rhiannon and Justin, noticed something wasn’t quite right. “Cooper wouldn’t open his eyes and he kept vomiting. The nurses said that this was normal for a newborn baby, until he had a temperature and his heart started racing. Within an hour of this, he was admitted to the NICU where he slipped into a coma. Not knowing what was going on, we were told to say our goodbyes” said Cooper’s mother Rhiannon. “Doctors had no idea what was wrong. One of the NICU Specialists decided to check his ammonia levels. Ammonia is a very dangerous poison that can put you into a coma and cause severe brain damage and death. A normal ammonia level for a newborn child is less than 5 and Cooper’s was 1,380. From there he was transferred immediately via NETS to Westmead Children’s PICU. There we were told that his ammonia level was 1,800. ”Again, we were told to say goodbye as they had never seen anyone survive ammonia levels that high” she explained. Cooper was diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder called Urea Cycle Disorder or CPS1. With this disorder, he is protein

restricted. Many things can cause his ammonia levels to again rise, like getting sick, vomiting, diarrhoea or eating protein. Because of this, Cooper is now on several medications and has a special diet. He is the most severe case that has ever been recorded in Australia. In order to treat this disorder to prolong his life, he must undergo a liver transplant. This has never been done in Australia and the family are awaiting approval of the transplant. Cooper is a little fighter and keeps defying the odds. “We live with the fear that he can have a hyper ammonia any day, but he keeps defying the odds. Without a transplant, Cooper won’t have a very long life. Hopefully we won’t have to wait much longer for the approval of his transplant” said Rhiannon. Cooper’s parents have set up a Facebook page to share the fundraising activities and regular updates of this little champion. It is hoped that awareness for Urea Cycle Disorder will increase and people are encouraged to share the page and follow his journey. The Facebook page can be found at: https://www.facebook.com/pages/ Doing-it-for-Cooper/360727104074627

Cait’s passion is to help people who have suffered loss. Using her training Cait seeks to empower her clients to breakthrough and rediscover the joys a full and rewarding life offers. Cait offers grief, loss and bereavement counselling for adults, adolescents, children and families in the Penrith CBD.

I should…. Don’t should on yourself. There ARE things you definitely should do. You should take care of yourself. You should attend to the needs of others to whom you have made commitments. You should do your best. You know this. I know this. The problem with should is when it gets so out of control that we feel we must do the impossible. For example: you make a gigantic, impossible to-do list and plague yourself with shoulds all day long to get more done. At the end of the day, you’ve never gotten enough done, Does the sound like you? The list was not doable in the first place, but that didn’t stop you from placing unrealistic expectations on yourself! And by the way…You should be more like (someone else). • You should accept people (that you don’t accept). • You should become (something you don’t want to become). • You should believe (something you don’t believe). • In short, you should be PERFECT IN EVERY WAY. Sigmund Freud suggests that our ‘shoulds’ come from scripts we have heard from our parents and are stored in our Super Ego. So do yourself a favour and ask yourself where your shoulds are coming from.

Pop over to Cait’s website www.indigotherapies.com.au August 30th from 10am to 2pm. Book your spot, phone Cait on 0434 865 429.

PARENTS CORNER Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) NepeanStudent-Wellbeing Worker – Mulgoa Public School Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services Ph: 0409 986 121 Centre: 4721 8520 Blog: http://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com

Standards I often wonder why adults have a one set of standards for themselves and another for the children. I recently observed a childcare worker yelling at a young fella because he was yelling at one of his playmates. It struck me as odd. If the young fella is not allowed to yell then why are you yelling at him? How did your yelling at him help him to learn how to do things differently? A parent in one of my parenting groups years ago, said “I hit the children for hitting each other, it doesn’t make any sense. Dr Magda Gerber said “YOU are what you teach your children. No truer words have been spoken. If your kids are yelling, swearing, getting angry where do they get the yelling/swearing/angry from? If they can’t tolerate frustration, who is role modelling that for them? And who is teaching them the alternative - how to calm and center themselves? Parents say to me that their kids don’t listen. I rather cheekily ask how much they listen to their children. Parents expect their children to jump up and do whatever they are asking them to do as soon as they ask it. But when you are sitting on the lounge watching your favourite TV show, or looking at Facebook, how quickly do you respond to your children’s requests? Parents expect their children to share. They rouse on the young one who won’t share his favourite truck. But if I asked to borrow your car how willingly would you hand over the keys? Adults aren’t that good at sharing so why should children be good at it, especially as they are egocentric and they really do think that the universe revolves around them. Being egocentric is developmental, it’s something that their brain controls, they actually can’t help it. They are not being ‘selfish’ to be nasty. If you have a house rule that food should only be eaten at the kitchen table, then are you following that rule too? The kids are looking at you, and pretty soon they learn what the word ‘hypocrite’ means. They will mutter under their breath that you don’t follow the ‘rules’ and then they will get into trouble for ‘back-chatting’ or being rude or not respecting their parents. When we make a mistake we pass it off as a mistake. When our child makes a mistake we say its “misbehaviour, “naughty, “seeking attention. I’m not suggesting that children be given free reign. Your job as a parent is to set the rules for acceptable behaviour, to establish the limits and boundaries. It is absolutely OK for you to set limits and boundaries. Some of the most extreme child behaviour I have ever seen has come from parents who are too scared to limit their child’s behaviour. It’s also your job to be a good role model. Fifty years of research has shown that the best child behaviour is a result of parenting that has a high level of warmth (care, nurture, fun, hugs, listening, attention), and a reasonable level of communicated expectations.

First Ever Spring Fair

Luddenham Public School is a quaint little school located along the Northern Road in Luddenham. We are a small school of only 87 students from Kindergarten to Year 6 with a strong focus on being responsible and respectful and safe learners. Our school has a strong focus on learning for all and has a strong partnership with the community. The school is very proud of their P&C committee who are striving to achieve outstanding results for the school. The committee continues to raise money every year and with such a small school population fundraising is the challenge. This year the P&C are taking a leap into the unknown spring fair territory in an attempt to break all fundraising records. On Saturday 13 September, 2014 they will be holding the schools first SPRING FAIR. With great sponsorship opportunities for local businesses, with marketing along the Northern Road in Luddenham available, this offers their sponsors visible signage space promoting their businesses while supporting the school. The P&C are hoping to raise enough funds to purchase much needed learning equipment, iPads for the four classrooms, new playground seating, additional storage space with a garden shed and the list goes on. To purchase these items the school needs to raise thousands of dollars. With the kind generosity of our sponsors $5,000 has been raised to date however there is still a long way to go.

A special thanks must go to the generous kind heart of Kevin James at Penrith Homemaker Centre who kindly purchased and donated a brand new oven for our school canteen. The old oven did not heat evenly, was incredibly small and unreliable. With the help of Penrith Homemaker Centre the canteen can now run more efficiently, without burning the chicken nuggets! The children of Luddenham Public School are very grateful for the donation and couldn’t resist getting their photo taken with the newly installed oven. Our generous local businesses wasted no time in joining the excitement of the upcoming Spring Fair with Forge Real Estate Wallacia being the first to declare their support as major sponsor for the event. Forge Real Estate will have exceptional deals on the day of the fair for all people signing on with them. Caltex Luddenham, Versatile Conveyancing, Outback Steakhouse, 87.6 Vintage FM, Lollipops Penrith, Harvey Norman, MD Signs & Designs and Dr Michael Dowd are also all on our wonderful list of proud sponsors. With such great support the school is hoping to raise a further $10,000!! To do this the school and P&C need your help…. Luddenham Public School would like to invite the Nepean District and afar to come and join in the festivities of their first ever Spring Fair on Saturday 13 September, 2014 from 10am-3pm. There will be free entertainment, free animal farm/barnyard, lots of activities such as NSW Police Force and Luddenham Rural Fire Brigade exhibits, jumping castles, face painting, market stalls, great food and much more!! To make the day a huge success we are calling out to entertainers, stallholders and sponsors to make contact with us and pledge your support. Please call the school on 4773 4111 or email luddenhampublicschool@pandcaffiliate.org.au if you would like to be a stallholder, sponsor or make a donation of any kind to the Spring Fair. We hope to see every reader on Saturday 13 September, 2014 from 10am-3pm, it will be a fun and exciting day for all!! We need your support to make it a success!! ACN 161 206 640

Mike Whitney Talks Tourism to Sydney’s Adventure Capital Well known travel program host Mike Whitney met with Penrith tourism operators at a networking event at Penrith Civic Centre in July. The former Australian one day and test cricketer hosts Sydney Weekender exploring travel destinations across NSW. The program, now in its 21st year, shows Whitney traversing the state profiling the best places to stay, eat and play. Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said no one knows tourism in NSW like Mike Whitney. “Mike has travelled far and wide within the state showcasing many travel and tourist destinations. His knowledge of the tourism industry and what makes a great travel destination was welcomed by our own tourism operators,” Cr Fowler said. “Penrith is well established as an adventure destination where visitors can sky dive, go whitewater rafting, wakeboarding or get behind the controls of a jet aircraft. And soon adrenaline junkies will be able to race go-karts and participate in motorsport activities. “And there is so much more. Adventure is all about discovery. From the fire museum to the art gallery, award winning chocolate to great outdoor activities. Penrith has it all.” Whitney is no stranger to the attractions the adventure capital boasts, often visiting them during the course of filming Sydney Weekender. In June he tried his hand at indoor skydiving at Penrith’s latest attraction, iFly.

MONEY MATTERS PARENTS CORNER With Mark Stevenson - Nepean Financial P: 1300 729 692 E: mark@nepfin.co W: www.nepfin.co

Save Money with the Correct Loan Structure One of the biggest advantages of coming to an expert for your loan is the free advice you receive around getting the loan structure right. Getting the structure wrong can actually cost borrowers 10’s of thousands of dollars more than they would have paid if their loans were structured correctly in the first place. Finding the right structure starts with asking questions to find out what the money will be used for and how you intended to be repay it. It takes into consideration your cash flow and your plans and goals around the loan and any assets you may be purchasing with the funds. The kind of things a finance expert would look at include: • Repayment type: Interest only repayments or repayments of interest and principle (or a combination of the two); • Interest rate type: Fixed interest rates or variable interest rates (or a combination of the two); • Loan terms: Including terms for fixed interest rate periods and interest only repayment periods; • Loan product features: This can range from additional repayments and redraw facilities, to offset accounts, lines of credit, general banking facilities and more. In some cases the input of an accountant or financial planner who is working on your overall strategy may be sort to ensure that the loan structure maximizes the benefits they are working to achieve. The new financial year is a great time to have a your current loan structure reviewed and optimized.

Is your Chimney Sending you Smoke Signals? Western Sydney councils are joining forces to tackle wood smoke pollution. The Western Sydney Wood Smoke Project, run by the Western Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils (WSROC), aims to make residents more aware of the proper operation of their wood heaters which will ultimately save money, reduce nuisance smoke and improve regional air quality. Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said smoky chimneys could be a real problem during winter months, when wood smoke haze is trapped over built up areas. He asked residents with wood heaters to check their chimneys for excessive smoke. “Unfortunately wood smoke pollution can harm the environment and your health and can be upsetting for neighbours,” Clr Fowler said. “Ideally, chimneys should not vent any smoke, just a heat haze. Older models may vent thin wispy smoke. However, if your chimney has obvious smoke this means it’s not operating as efficiently as it could be, regardless of its age. “Proper operation of your wood heater does not only reduce wood smoke, it is also economically more efficient.” Simple steps to reduce wood smoke are: • Don’t let your heater smoulder overnight – keep enough air in the fire to maintain a flame. • Burn only dry, aged hardwood in your wood heater. Unseasoned wood has lots of moisture, which causes a fire to smoke. • Store your wood under cover in a dry, ventilated area. Freshly cut wood needs to be stored for at least eight to twelve months.

Never burn rubbish, driftwood or painted or treated wood. These are sure to pollute the air and can produce poisonous gases. • When lighting a cold heater, use plenty of dry kindling to establish a good fire quickly. • Use several small logs rather than one large log and stack them loosely in your heater, so air can circulate around them. Don’t cram the firebox full. • Keep the flame lively and bright. Your fire should only smoke when you first light it and when you add extra fuel. Open the air controls fully for 5 minutes before and 15 to 20 minutes after reloading the heater. • Check your chimney regularly to see how well your fire is burning. If there is smoke coming from the chimney, increase the air supply to your fire. • Have the chimney cleaned every year to prevent creosote build-up. • If you are buying a wood heater, make sure it has a compliance plate showing it meets the Australian Standard (AS/NZS 4013:1999) and obtain the relevant Council approvals prior to installation. Penrith Council and WSROC are holding a free workshop on Tuesday 12 August at 6.30pm about wood smoke pollution. The workshop will provide tips for better wood heater operation. All participants will receive a free goodie bag and go into the draw to win an iPad. A light meal will also be provided. To register telephone 4732 8055.

Pop in to enjoy a cupcake (or two!) and even a ‘pupcake’ for your beloved pet. We have made ‘pupcakes’ which are dog friendly and do not contain any chocolate which is toxic to dogs. If you are unable to make it here on the day, then you can still contribute to the RSPCA via an online donation. https://rspcacupcakedaynsw2014.everydayhero.com/au/orchardhillsveterinaryhospital. The RSPCA is the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, a non-profit, community based charity that works to prevent cruelty to animals by actively promoting their care and protection. The RSPCA is not an agency of the Australian Government and therefore relies on the generosity of the community – through animal adoptions, volunteering, event participation, donations, fundraising, corporate partnerships, corporate support, bequests and grants – to support its vital daily work. Please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. Call 4736 2027 to make an appointment. Check us out on Facebook and online at www.orchardhillsvet.com.au.
