Luddenham Luddenham was named after the Blaxland family property in Kent, England. John Blaxland, elder brother of the more famous Gregory, received a grant of 6710 acres between South Creek and the Nepean River on 30 November 1813. The Blaxlands were the first Australians to export wine. John did not live on the property but employed others to oversee and work this land. Among those employed were German and Swiss families brought out to Australia especially to work in the vineyards. Many descendants of these families still live in the area. Luddenham is now split between the local government areas of Penrith and Liverpool. Moving the boundary to include the whole village into Penrith has been proposed on several occasions, most recently at the Progress Association AGM. The majority of residents are in favour of this as they go to Penrith for high schooling, shopping and work. It might also be easier to get the village connected to the sewer line. The Progress Association meets on the first Wednesday of the month in the Progress Hall. Contact 4773 4454. Luddenham is well known for the
Showground with the popular Luddenham Show held there every year. The Sydney Society of Model Engineers on Luddenham Road is open to the public on the last Sunday of the month and is a great place for a family visit to see the model trains, boats and planes. Vicary’s Winery has been making wine since 1923 and has a regular market there as well as the wool shed dances. The Hubertus German club moved to Luddenham when the Badgery Creek area was chosen as an airport site. There are three churches, the Uniting Church, St James’ Anglican Church and the Holy Family Catholic Church. There are also two schools, the public school, the Holy Family Catholic school and a child care centre. There is a Rural Fire Brigade, 4773 4142, and a surprising number of shops and businessess in Luddenham, most of them featured here but also including Trevor Roots butcher, 4773 4102, and

The shop has grown into a retail centre with a take away, beautician, work wear shop, doctor, pharmacist, newsagency and post office, supermarket and most recently the new Shell service station. Charlie and Maria wanted to provide a village shopping centre for the community and they both worked really hard to achieve this.

Luddenham Uniting Church One of the oldest buildings in the village is the Uniting Church. It was opened as a Methodist Church on Sunday, November 14, 1886 250 people attended a “Tea” the next day, which was cut short because some of the young men had previously visited the wine bar and were of high spirits! Over the last 123 years the church has sought to serve the local community pastorally by providing open and relevant worship. We have done our fair share of baptisms, weddings and funerals and have provided Sunday School and other youth activities. In 1978, Luddenham became a congregation within the Uniting Church in Australia, the third largest denomination in the nation. We continue to worship at 9.30am each Sunday and
have a craft group, Fellowship and morning tea after church. Everyone knows the Luddenham Church for its Market Day on the first Saturday of the month. What began as a peach stall has become a centre point for the village with plants, clothing, books and bric a brac for sale to help us raise money for cancer research and maintenance of the historic church building. The final Market Day for the year will be on Saturday, December 5. Come along and find some Christmas presents. Our focus over the last 4 years or so has been on raising money for cancer research through the “Cuppa for Cancer” programme. This is strongly supported by many local people and in 2008 we raised $12,000. This year we will again have an attractive Advent programme leading up to Christmas, beginning with a “Barbecue Church” on Sunday, November 29 at 9.30am. Please come along and sizzle a sausage and sing some songs.

Luddenham Public School Luddenham school was founded in 1860 and will be celebrating its 150th anniversary on the 14/15th August 2010 with a street parade and historic and modern displays at the school. The school is looking for past pupils and any old photos or memorabilia. Please contact Dawn 4773 4454 with any information.
St James Anglican Church Another historic building in Luddenham is St James Anglican church. The foundation stone was laid in 1870 on the 13th July. There is a monthly Sunday service with the next one on December 13th at 3pm. The new minister, Rev Matt Olliffe, is proposing to change this to a mid week service twice a month next year. Lessons from the ‘Galloping Parson’ As far as white settlement is concerned, the Anglican Church has a long history in the Nepean district. It is well known that St Thomas’ Mulgoa was built in 1838, and then St James Luddenham was opened in 1871. However, our Anglican heritage is older and grander than any of its buildings. Anglican ministry of teaching the bible, praying together, and showing Christian love in the Mulgoa area predates Anglican church buildings by 11 years. The Rev Thomas Hassall was the first Anglican Minister to have grown up in NSW. He was 4 years old when his parents, Protestant English missionaries to Tahiti, settled in Parramatta. His family enjoyed the friendship and hospitality of the larger than life Rev Samuel Marsden, who became young Thomas’ mentor. At a little over 18, Thomas established the first Sunday School in NSW in his own home at Parramatta. Being drawn to the Church of England, Marsden encouraged Thomas to prepare for ordination. Hassall travelled to England in
1817 for his theological education and returned to Sydney in 1822. He became Marsden’s Assistant Minister, and then his son-in-law! After ministry in Port Macquarie and Bathurst, Hassall was appointed to minister at ‘Cowpastures’ in 1827. He built his house at Cobbitty, as well as a chapel and church. From that base, Hassall conducted a wide itinerate ministry. He was responsible for people hearing the good news about Jesus Christ from Goulburn to Wollongong, and from Cabramatta to Mulgoa. And so Hassall became known as the ‘Galloping Parson’. Hassall conducted the first Anglican service in the Mulgoa region in 1827. It was held in a barn! This was 11 years before St Thomas’ Mulgoa was built. Hassall visited the area monthly, a monumental effort given the enormity of the area, and the fact that it was a 100 mile round trip from his house on horseback. He conducted services in homes or any suitable building. To all bible loving people, Hassall must be seen as a hero. He embodied the good results of faithful mentoring by older Christians and the blessings attendant on evangelicals

from different denominations working together. We are also reminded from his example that church is not about buildings but people gathering around the bible to worship Jesus Christ. Church can meet in a barn or a house, or under a tree, if that is expedient. Jesus promised, ‘Where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them’ (Matthew 18:20). Walls and a roof keep the rain off our head and the sun off our back. But in the end they will crumble and fall. But Jesus Christ saves believers from sin and hell, and his death and resurrection wins his people a sure place in heaven. So they will outlast the buildings that seem to outlast them. Life has changed since Hassall rode his horse around Mulgoa. But the things he lived for haven’t. I hope and pray to see the same convictions and zeal emanate from the churches that inherit his legacy. Matt Olliffe, Minister, Anglican Parish of Mulgoa. 4774 0422 Sunday services. Warragamba Dam At the recent opening Premier Nathan Rees said “Many of us have fond memories of family visits to Warragamba Dam and it’s great to reopen the gates to this iconic site today,” “With the construction works that closed the dam in 1998 now finished, the dam can return to its rightful place as one of Western Sydney’s most popular tourist destinations. “Before the closure, the dam attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors each year and we know families are keen to get back to their favourite picnic spot.” Mr Rees also announced that a workers memorial will be constructed at the site to commemorate the men who were injured and lost their lives during the construction of Warragamba Dam. “Next year marks the 50th anniversary of the dam and a memorial will be built to honour those who died or were injured building Warragamba Dam for future generations,” Mr Rees said. “Planning for the memorial is underway and it will be unveiled next year as part of the dam’s anniversary.” Mr Rees said a large number of visitors were expected to visit the site and
a free shuttle bus service would operate on a loop and leave Penrith station every hour from 8.30am to 3.30pm. “The dam will stay open now seven days a week and I’m sure many families will enjoy a picnic back here in the grounds during the coming summer months,” Mr Rees said. Minister for Water Phil Costa said people returning to the dam will benefit from a range of new facilties. “Families returning to the dam will be able to enjoy new picnic shelters and tables, landscaping and three new viewing platforms to provide excellent views of the dam and lake,” Mr Costa said. “New signage throughout the site provides information about the dam, its history and our drinking water catchments. Heritage items have also been placed around the grounds.
Adopt a Pensioner Christmas Appeal As most of you may already know last year I organised donations to make up several hampers for the less fortunate pensioners in the Warragamba area. It was a great success and I received feedback from the Neighbourhood Centre and the Penrith Press.
This year I would like to organise more hampers leading up to Christmas. I am asking anyone in the community or any local business if they would kindly donate any items including food, cleaning products, toiletries and other household items to this appeal. Any donations would be very helpful and can be dropped at the Warragamba Silverdale Neighbourhood Centre. All donations must be received by 30th November, as I need to get these organised in time for Christmas. Many thanks Jessica Webb Age 11
Snake Alert Further to the information in the last edition on dealing with snakes, the NSW Fire Brigade is the best place to contact if you feel threatened by a snake. All officers are trained in snake and other wild life capture and removal. If you are bitten by a snake there is no need to kill it for identification as the hospital has a kit to do it. Warragamba school The Covered Outdoor Learning Area over the netball court has been installed and is being put to good use. The hall should be finished by the end of term and the admin block is undergoing drastic alterations. The renovation of the B Block toilets will have new cisterns installed, be steam cleaned and repainted, tiles will be repaired and taps and bubblers replaced with water-saving items. A stormwater tank is also planned at the base of the COLA. Warragamba Public School is being transferred to the Western Sydney Region in 2010 which means the designated local high school is Glenmore Park instead of Elderslie. As of year 2011 all year 6 students will have GPHS as their designated local government high school but any current year 6 students wishing to attend as of year 7 2010 are welcome to do so.

Sailability has support from state sporting authorities and works closely with a variety of disability organizations around Australia, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to sail in safety and experience adventure and freedom – building mobility, self confidence and pride through achievement. If you are available one or two days a week, and would like to be involved with a wonderful group of people, please contact Pam Smith on 0402 538 456 for more information. Please come along and give it a try – your reward will be a sea of smiling faces, lots of fun, new experiences and friendships. www.sailabilitypenrithlakes.org.au

Tax reform – Henry Review, how fair is it? In response to the recent leakage into the media in October 2009 for the proposal of tax reform to be released in December 2009, I, Emma Grima as your local accountant in Silverdale wanted to inform the community of the huge impact this could have on the individual taxpayer. The Henry Review has been on the government’s agenda since May 2008. Such changes proposed to date are to achieve a balance of simplicity, integrity and fairness to all Australians via the tax system. However, the rumoured simplification of the individual tax return from recent media releases concerned me on the basis that a $500 annual deduction for work related expenses would be allowed by ticking a box. What we do need to consider is
how many individuals would actually only claim $500 worth of deductions ie this would equate on average a refund of only $150 approximately compared to the average level of claims being claimed at current being much more. The NTAA (National Tax & Accountants Association) also commented recently in their own publication. “The Voice’, by commenting on what safeguard has been put in to prevent the $500 in the future being reduced or removed and also noting that the former Tax commissioner treated the individual tax return as a valid social document which has many benefits other than collecting tax. Could it be the end of work related tax deductions? My role as being a Certified Practicing Accountant (CPA) is to practice accounting first then be a tax agent. As a CPA we always act in the best interest of our clients in accordance with the tax laws and ensure every client is made aware of what they can claim in their individual tax return to maximise their refund and in alignment with government rebates entitled to. Such tax refunds can also include other non-work related items such as education tax offset, medical expense
offset, superannuation government cocontributions and many more, Without the individual meeting with their accountant at least annually I believe this would be a disservice to the community without the individual being properly informed of our governments constant tax law changes. Example, The Education expense tax offset was another rebate families were entitled to claim in 2009 tax year being complex to the individual on what you can and cannot claim but with our assistance such claims were made so much easier for clients. Why would an individual want to miss out on these refunds as well. My clients look forward to seeing me at least once a year especially when they achieve big refunds for work related expenses. Many clients use the tax system as one way of forced saving. In summary is this another way of the government to save thousands of $$$ by controlling deductions to the detriment of the taxpayers? More information can be obtained on the following link http://taxreview. treasury.gov.au. Expected date of release to Treasury is in December 2009. By Emma Grima. www.elgaccounting.com.au.

Remembrance Day 2009 Remembrance Day marks the end of World War One at 11am on the 11th of November 1918. This year, 91 years after the Armistice, our local community remembed the more than 60,000 Australians who paid the ultimate sacrifice in World War One. A Remembrance Day ceremony was held in Warragamba park with wreaths laid and Warragamba Public School pupils singinging. Local ex-serviceman, Jim Neu, and Father Evans have organised the ceremony in Warragamba for the past few years now and it will be on again next year if you would like to participate. Remembrance Day honours the lives of all past and present servicemen and women who have lost their lives or suffered in the field of war.
Insulation information from J & T J & T Insulation, a Mulgoa based company, was started 7 years ago, primarily installing insulation for new homes and builders in Western Sydney and the Blue Mountains. Our family runs a building supplies business in Penrith called Jay Jay Building Supplies which has been running for over 25 years and it was out of this that our company branched, specializing in insulation products and installation. Over the years our business has grown and we now install for Clarendon, A V Jennings, Mirvac, Beechwood, Balmoral and Coral Homes. We have become one of Fletcher Insulation’s main Install companies in Sydney and our builders work is constantly expanding and will always remain a priority to us. Insulation being our only line of work, we pride ourselves on quality and customer service as our business will be ongoing into the future (beyond the rebate). Due to our good reputation in the industry and being a main installer for builders such as Clarendon, this has assured us a continuous supply of stock and very rarely have we been unable to do a job due to having no stock in the current (rebate) climate. Since the Insulation rebate has been announced there has been an enormous amount of new startup businesses in the insulation industry all registering to be an installer, most with very little experience. On top of that, due to a slowed down building economy, just about every other tradesperson has registered for the scheme (some totally unrelated to insulation such as landscapers, pest control companies and even the odd pool and spa co).
A lot of these new companies have viewed this as a get rich quick scheme and are in it only for the short term and therefore do not care about quality, reputation or the long term business ramifications due to dodgy work within the insulation industry. The issues caused by companies like this are, dodgy workmanship due to either lack of experience or being in it for the short term money. And on top of that most of these companies have struggled to get stock (we know this as we were getting about three insulation companies a day ringing us for stock) and have therefore continually let customers down by not being able to meet the demand for the amount of jobs they have been quoting. These people have made it very difficult for companies like us where this is our only business. There are so many variables to consider when climbing through a dark, confined space often with air ducting and electrical wires all over the place, seven years of experience installing ourselves has enabled us to give thorough training to all our installers. The government has now laid off 100 companies due to the amount of dodgy work being done and has increased the amount of audits. So far to date, with the amount of audits being done, we have not had one call back for poor quality or dodgy work. Fletcher Insulation continually audit our new homes work to check quality and we also do our own audits and to ensure our installers our always installing to our standard and if anything is ever picked up on, it is fixed immediately! If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to call us on 4722 5687 or Tim our Sales Rep on 0411 376 570. Jeremy Footit, Director.

Tough new penalties for lighting fires
BERT’S
Peter Davies has lived in Wallacia since 2001 and has decided to shave his head and his beard to raise money for the Cancer Council, to help find a cure for cancer. The fund raising event is continuing his community work with the Rural Fire Service in Wallacia and previously in Mulgoa. Peter says “I have a very long beard, my bare chin has not seen the sun since 1993, (and that was for only 10 days).\and before that since the early 80’s. I have been growing my hair for more than 3 years. Better yet, if I can raised more than the magical sum of $5,000, my moustache that has been there since 1975 will come off too!” “I have set up the fund raising directly through the Cancer Council and there is website through which people can sponsor me (the link is below). The shave will be held on16th January 2010 in the beer garden at the Wallacia hotel. The event will start around 12.30 pm, The pub will be putting on a BBQwith a chef and all proceeds are going to the Cancer Council. A band will be on stage (yet to finalised but looking good) as will a jumping castle
Minister for Emergency Services Steve Whan has announced new increased penalties for for lighting a fire during a day of Total Fire Ban or leaving a fire burning unattended had doubled to $1,100. The penalty for failing to comply with a bush fire Hazard Reduction Notice has gone from $220 to $1,100. Mr Whan said “The misuse or inappropriate use of fire can place lives and even whole communities at risk. These tough new penalties will send a very strong message that the community will not tolerate this kind irresponsible behaviour. Bush Fire Hazard Reduction Notices are issued to ensure people effectively manage hazards on their land. “Failure to follow the conditions on a Hazard Reduction Notice can allow hazards to remain and, if a fire were to start, put lives and property at risk. “These new penalties are part of a raft of changes that also give increased fire investigation powers as well as the ability to remove people and vehicles from fire scenes,” Mr Whan said. “I urge everyone to familiarise themselves with these new penalties and use fire only appropriately and responsibly.” For more information or to download a Bush Fire Survival Plan to protect your property visit RFS website at www.rfs.nsw.gov.au.

Online help for bush fire season NSW Minister for Emergency Services Steve Whan has urged residents living in bush fire prone areas around the state to try the RFS latest home fire danger assessment tool Mr Whan said the service is available online at the RFS website and is called the Bush Fire Household Risk Assessment Tool. “This is an important feature and will assist residents with assessing the level of bush fire risk to their property and help them prepare for bush fire season,” Mr Whan said. “The Bush Fire Household Risk Assessment Tool allows you to enter simple details about your property, such as the slope and vegetation. “It then calculates the level of risk to your property, whether it be from direct flame, radiant heat or ember attack, and provides valuable advice on how to reduce that risk,” he said. Mr Whan said the online tool also lets people assess their own ability to defend their home from bush fire. “By answering a few simple questions about your own preparation and your ability to defend your property, the tool can assist you in making the important decision of whether you will stay with your property and defend it during a fire. “The online tool gives people clear and simply advice, which can then be used to complete your Bush Fire Survival Plan. “It is vital that people do all they can to prepare for the coming hot summer days ahead of us, and I strongly urge all householders in fire prone areas to use this new tool to help them maketheir bush fire plans. The Household Risk Assessment Tool and Bush Fire Survival Plan is available at www.rfs.nsw.gov.au.

However, the Kayakers’ biggest thrill came from their spectacular performance at the International Rowing Centre. They won 15 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze medals and enjoyed their trip to Australia so much they extended their visit. As well, the Sisters of Mary who run Mount Schoenstatt Retreat Centre won’t forget their international visitors in a hurry; their guests presented them with one of their medals in appreciation for the hospitality extended to them.
Carols at the College
International Sporting Stars stay at Mount Schoenstatt Recently Mount Schoenstatt Retreat Centre in Fairlight Road Mulgoa played host to some unusual guests, 15 Ukrainian Kayakers who were taking part in the World Masters Games. The Kayakers found out about the Retreat Centre via the Internet and after emails back and forth, a book-
ing was made for the Home of Light, a self catering facility on the edge of the bush in the valley behind the Mount Schoenstatt Shrine. The Kayakers navigated their way, late at night, from the international airport and despite some early misunderstandings due to language problems, including the meaning of self catering; their stay was a big success. They were thrilled to have kangaroos, literally ‘on their doorstep’.
