Mulgoa Public School News Mulgoa Public School’s transition to school program starts next term, on Thursday 21st July, and continues each week until the end of the 2011 school year! T h i s extensive transition to school program is based on the findings of the Starting School Research Project, undertaken by University of Western Sydney researchers, Sue Dockett and Bob Perry. Last year, these guidelines were trialled at Mulgoa Public School, with great success. The new Kindergarten students started the 2011 school year ready for learning and were reading their first books two days after starting school! The children were happy and settled and the parents felt comfortable with the classroom setting, having had many visits in the previous year. All

children starting school in 2012 are invited to attend the transition program, even if their parents have not yet decided which school their child is attending. Contact the school principal, Mrs Thompson, for more information.

The Dam Riders Warragamba Dam Riders are a group of local men and women who enjoy riding motor bikes and having fun. They might look like ‘Bikies’ but have a strong commitment to the local community and helping local groups. Over the past few years they have raised money with regular meat raffles and have been able to help Teddy Bear Cottage, Wigwam, Little Athletics, Silverdale Bush Fire Brigade, Warragamba Public School, the Girl Guides, the dance group, other sporting groups and deserving individuals. The group meets on the 1st Tuesday of the month in the Warragamba Workers Club at 7pm and hold the meat raffles in the club on Friday evenings. They are helping to promote a great rock band at the club on the 30th July and need plenty of support .

This is a FREE show. It is a spine tingling monster mash of good time music starring the music of Led Zeppelin, AC-DC, Deep Purple, ZZ Top, Jimi Hendrix, Thin Lizzy, Lynyrd Skynyrd and many more!!

Be savvy about backyard burning With illegal fires on the rise, Penrith City Council is reminding residents to adhere to fire regulations and notify the Cumberland Rural Fire Service before carrying out backyard burning. Penrith City Deputy Mayor Jim Aitken OAM said the Rural Fire Service (RFS) was concerned with the number of illegal fires in recent months. “The recent spate of illegal fires has triggered alarm bells for the Rural Fire Service and the community. RFS volunteers have already dealt with several illegal fires this year in Castlereagh, Llandilo, Mulgoa and Wallacia. “It is an unfortunate trend that RFS volunteers are called out at all hours of the day and night to put out fires lit without approval. Despite their vital service helping protect our community, these volunteers are often verbally abused and threatened with violence. “After receiving a “000” call, the RFS must respond by extinguishing the fire and explaining the regulations to the residents involved. People can also receive on-the-spot fines from Council Rangers or the Police for not complying with restrictions on burning. “Until 30 September 2011 or when the start of the fire season is declared, residents may burn dead and dry vegetation between 8am and 6pm, provided they adhere to ‘Notice of Approval to Burn’ requirements. These are available via Council’s website. “Residents are prohibited from burning items such as tyres, coated wire, paint containers, timber that has been treated, and building or household rubbish.

“Anyone wanting to reduce the risk of bushfires on their property should contact the Cumberland Zone of the NSW Rural Fire Service on 4734 7777. The RFS provide valuable assistance including free environmental assessments,” Councillor Aitken said. Residents should also seek RFS advice on how to safely manage pile burns, constructing them in open spaces to avoid neighbouring property, trees or power lines. The standards for pile burning and hazard reduction are available from the publications section on the NSW RFS website www.rfs.nsw.gov.au or from the Cumberland Zone RFS. For more details visit www.penrithcity.nsw.gov.au and click on the Environment tab.

Fantastic Day with Dr Chris Brown! Wow, what a fantastic response we had to Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital Open Day last month. Thank you so much for everyone who attended on the day. We estimate over 2000 people attended the Open Day and 88 dogs were here (my nephew counted them all). How nice is Dr Chris Brown!!! He gave everyone his undivided attention whilst he was signing autographs and having his picture taken. This made waiting in the queue to see him worthwhile. Dr Chris Brown is the real deal and he genuinely cares about animals and the people as well. The hospital tours were very popular. Penny (a 5th year veterinary student) showed many people through the hospital and explained all of the different pieces of equipment that we have. The dog competitions were very popular and the winners received a large bag full of goodies kindly donated by Merial, Hills, Bayer, Pfizer, Dermcare, Pets Charming and DCH Adoptions. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd places also received a certificate signed by Dr Chris Brown who judged the competitions. A special thank you to Isaac who was Dr Chris Brown’s personal assistant on the Open Day. Isaac is nearly 11 years old, and he showed extreme bravery when his dog Scrum was bitten by a snake last year. Another special thank you to all of our volunteers who helped out on the day. We hope you enjoy the signed book by Dr Chris Brown! The sausage sizzle raised money for the Guide Dogs. Check out our website for Open Day photographs at www. orchardhillsvet.com.au or join us on Facebook. We look forward to meeting you and your pets at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. Please feel free to pop in anytime.

Wallacia Fishing Club Reels them in ... Over 100 people attended The Wallacia Fishing Club Presentation Night on Saturday 25th June at The Wallacia Bowling Club. A magnificent Seafood and Roast Buffet, prepared by resident chef Craig, was followed by dancing to music from two piece band, Michael and Bevan.

Female Angler 2011 Penny Beetson

Presentations were made by Fishing Club President Gerald Ashurst to Male Angler 2011 Perry Noro and Female Angler 2011 Penny Beetson. A special presentation for Life Membership was made to Graham (Butch) Charlwood in recognition of and in gratitude for his work as President for the past 7 years. The Fyffe family scooped the pool in the Junior Awards. The next major function at The Bowlo is The Stockmans Ball on Saturday 23rd July. Tickets are $40 per head which includes dinner, and dancing to music provided by bush band The Inland Navigators .Bookings are essential. For tickets and further information telephone The Wallacia Bowling Club on 47738096. The Wallacia Womens Bowling Club also held a very successful Ladies Tournament on Wednesday 29th June. Eighty four ladies from both local and out of area Bowling Clubs got together in the true spirit of the game for

a Rotating Triples Tournament. Even though they were rained off on the fourth end of the third game it didn’t dampen any spirits and a good time was had by all. The winners on the day were Kerry Shiels, Mandy Snow and Michelle Pearce from Penrith Bowling Club. They are pictured here with Wallacia President, Nancy Willmington and Chairman of Selectors, Tanya Kelly.

Many thanks to the sponsors of the day - Wallacia Fishing Club, Denco Engineering and T.W.Roots Butchery Luddenham.

Scout Job Month is set to start again! 1st South Penrith Scouts and Cubs will be out and about during July 2011 looking for jobs to do in the community for a small donation. Jobs can range from gardening, cleaning cars or shoes, walking pets or washing windows. Girls and boys aged 8-14 are willing to do jobs either as individuals or as part of a group. This fundraiser provides an opportunity for the cubs and scouts to learn new skills, to provide a service to the local community and to raise funds for their troop. If you have any jobs suitable please contact Leanne Thurston on 47336461

Police engage with Community On Friday, 17 June, 2011, St Marys Police begun their Community Engagement Program attending Kingswood and Warragamba Shopping Centres. The purpose of the program is give another avenue for members of the community to be able to approach

Police and seek feedback on things that are of concern to community and to identify areas where the St Marys Police are doing well in and not so well in. This program is not unique to the St Marys Local Area Command as this is a State-wide initiative that seeks to improve the customer service of the New South Wales Police Force. The program is in keeping with the New South Wales Police Force commitment to our community of: • Being accessible • Being professional and helpful • Taking appropriate action and, • Keeping people informed Superintendent Ray FILEWOOD said, “We are engaging with the local community. We want to hear about the crime and public safety issues from the community perspective and at the same time give feedback in relation to what we are doing to reduce crime and improve public safety. Effective policing is about working in partnership with other agencies and members of the community. I look forward to their valuable input. The community engagement from last Friday went quite well. There was a lot of interest from the community.

We handed out a large number of surveys which will be returned directly to me. Comments from members of the community will assist with our future deployment and assist us better understand and address community concerns. Persons that I spoke to were very supportive of our police and the great work that they do.”

Digital Advertising Screen The new digital advertising screen in Shop Sense has been a success with many local businesses advertising and recently the screen was upgraded to a 21.5” unit, with the old unit being moved to Warragamba Post Office. If you are interested in advertising on these screens drop into Shop Sense or Warragamba Post Office to discuss with the friendly staff. Advertising costs just $10 per month and will be displayed on both screens, with money going to promote the local area to locals and visitors. Wollondilly Council Pensioner Rebate As part of its consideration of Council’s Management Plan, which includes a Special Rate Variation of 6% (3.2% above the capped rate for 2011/12), Council at its meeting for 20 June also resolved that “for the year 2011/12, Council grant all eligible pensioners in addition to the statutory reduction under Section 575 of the Local Government Act, a further voluntary $15 reduction of rates”. The overall Pensioner Rebate that Wollondilly Shire Council offers is a

generous one in comparison to most Councils. With regard to the pensioner rebate linked to the Special Rate Variation, the additional rebate is $15 in 2011/12, and then (subject to annual budget approval) $30 for the next year, and $45 in the third year of the approved Special Rate Variation period. If you are already a pensioner on our rates system, this rebate will occur automatically. The recent rate rise that was granted by the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) was not sufficient to cover Council’s asset maintenance costs, however we did

THE Original GOSPEL - WHAT WAS IT?

Does it actually matter what you believe God will have everyone to be saved, and to come to a knowledge of the truth 1 Timothy 2v4

The Christadelphians in your local area warmly invite you to a vital series of Bible seminars during July in Mulgoa Community Hall, Littlefields Rd, Mulgoa. Sunday 17th July at 3 pm: The Original Gospel Sunday 24th July at 3 pm: Facts about God and the Kingdom Sunday 31st July at 3 pm: Actual Warning Signs of Jesus return. How about you ? Each Sunday afternoon session will consist of two short presentations and conclude at 4.00 pm followed by light refreshments. Christadelphians are committed to helping people understand God’s urgent message about the world and salvation. We promise honest presentation of God’s word and invite your participation in discovering God’s message. As well as this short series, we have regular Bible Study Classes, Sunday School and Youth Activities. A Home Bible Study Class is also available on request.
