Local MP’s speak on Graffiti Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies MP, spoke in Parliament yesterday in favor of the Government’s new Graffiti laws. “Graffiti is not just an ugly scar that angers and frustrates our local communities, it is a real cost to businesses, individuals and Government. In my electorate of Mulgoa graffiti is an ongoing problem” Mrs Davies said in NSW Parliament. The NSW Government has introduced the Graffiti Legislation Amendment Bill 2011, which allows courts to suspend the driver’s licenses of graffiti offenders, impose compulsory community service orders for offenders to remove graffiti and ensure every offender faces court. “This is about hitting young offenders where it hurts; taking away the privilege to
drive or extending the time on learners and provisional licenses will make young offenders think twice before they spray” “The cost to the community is significant. I informed Parliament that graffiti removal cost for Penrith City Council alone in 20092010 was $870 000.” Mrs Davies said. Mrs Davies said that throughout the recent election campaign and in her community consultations since, the message that she received loud and clear was that people were sick of the previous government’s soft attitude to graffiti. “Graffiti is a criminal behavior and this Bill will ensure that offenders are made to take responsibility for their actions” Mrs Davies encouraged residents to call the graffiti hotline on 1800 022 182 to report incidences of graffiti in the local community.
Speaking in Parliament on the Graffiti Amendment Bill 2011 late last week, Mr Rowell MP outlined how the Governments amendments would go a long way in deterring graffiti vandals from further attacks. “Residents in the electorate of Wollondilly are sick of walking down streets covered by tags and un sightly expressions of so called art. No longer should they have to bear witness to this plight on our communities.” said Jai Rowell MP – Member for Wollondilly “Let’s be very clear from the start, graffiti is a crime” he said “What is also troubling, is the perpetual financial burden of constant graffiti removal. Funding that could be set aside for other projects within a community often suffer funding cuts or are postponed in an effort to redirect funding.” He continued “It is true that prevention is often better than a cure. It is my firm belief that this is the case with graffiti in our suburbs and I commend this government for its firm stance on this matter.” Said Jai The Bill is due to enter the Upper House later this week
