Top Results, Top Students! The St Paul’s Grammar School, Penrith, class of 2013 International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma students received their results last month, highlighting the long history of high academic achievement at St Paul’s. Principal Paul Kidson congratulated students, families and staff, noting that these outstanding results come from their collective efforts. Results released showed that International student, Sereibanndith Seang of Phnom Penh, Cambodia, was the Dux of St Paul’s from the class of 2013 with an IB score of 43 out of a maximum possible 45, equating to an Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR) of 99.60. A total of seventeen students achieved IB scores of 37 or above, equating to ATARs above 95. The number of students in the cohort this year was 63. IB Diploma results are not included in school rankings based on HSC scores and as such do not report that St Paul’s Grammar School is one of the best schools in NSW in terms of academic results, in that two thirds of our Year 12 graduates this year were IB Diploma Candidates. Other top scoring IB Diploma students included Nicholas Coulshed of Mount Riverview, Lachlan Johns of Blaxland and Veronica Mitchell of Orchard Hills, all with IB 42 (ATAR 99.25); School Captain Susannah Hoffmann of Bligh Park and Sarah Smith-Wade of Springwood both with IB 41 (ATAR 98.70) and Ryan Lin of South Penrith with IB 40 (ATAR 98.05). St Paul’s students have a long tradition of exceptional IB results with many scores in the 40’s (ATAR above 99) in the past seven years. St Paul’s long-term average is an ATAR of 92 from over 600 IB Diploma graduates. The world average has an ATAR equivalent of 80. Veronica Mitchell of Orchard Hills (IB 42: ATAR 99.25) is hoping for placement in Communications / Law at the University of Technology, focusing on the study of Internationalism and languages (French): “Being a Captain of Cornwallis House, involved in the service learning projects of the School, from the Congo, Arnhem Land to Cambodia, I really want to contribute to global social justice initiatives. St Paul’s offers a continuum of IB education from Pre-K-12, the only school to do so in NSW. It was one of the first schools to offer the IB in Australia, beginning with the Diploma Programme in 1990. It was the first school to offer the IB Primary Years and Middle Years Programmes, being authorized by the IB Organization to offer both in 2003, becoming the third school in Australia to offer all three IB Programmes. St Paul’s remains the only school in NSW to offer all three IB Programmes. Each year half to two thirds of the St Paul’s Year 11 and 12 students have studied the IB Diploma Programme.

ANGLICAN PARISH UPDATE Minister Matt Olliffe • Anglican Parish of Mulgoa • Phone: 4774 0422 • Mobile: 0401 958 161 Sunday Church times: 8:30am & 6.45pm St Thomas’ Mulgoa. 10:30am St Paul’s Warragamba.

The Blessing and Frustration of Being Australian We’ve just enjoyed the Australia Day long week end. As my family and I walked along the Nepean River at Penrith, we saw families from many nations enjoying the beautiful outdoors, out on the water, eating and drinking with their loved ones, taking time out to spend it with family and friends. Such scenes were multiplied across our nation. In our country, we live in relative peace and safety. Most of us have an abundance of food and water and clothing. Almost all of us have adequate housing. We have fine emergency services. Our children have all the blessings of education and western medicine. Our political system is one of the most stable in the world, and we don’t need a war to get rid of an unpopular government. We have holidays and sick leave and unemployment benefits. We have a beautiful country and ‘wealth for toil’. Australia is not perfect, but we must acknowledge, in many things it is the envy of the world. We are blessed to live here. The first Christian sermon on Australian soil, as far as we know, was by the Rev Richard Johnson, Anglican Minister and Chaplain to the first fleet and colony of NSW. Johnson’s first sermon was preached on Sunday, 3 February 1788 on Psalm 116:12; “What shall I render unto the Lord for all that he has done for me?” We too should consider this text. What can I give to God for all his blessings and kindness to me? The answer of Psalm 116 is simple, and the psalmist expresses it in verses 12-19: He will rejoice in God’s salvation. He will call on God’s name. He recognises that he is God’s servant and that God is his God. He will offer thanksgiving to God. He will fulfil his vows to God in the presence of God’s people. In other words, we will be grateful to God for his blessings, and serve him with joy. That is the first Christian attitude to being Australian: thank you, God. But the second attitude is just as important. It is frustration.

My country is truly blessed. It is ‘the lucky country’. But it is not what it should be. Indeed, it always seems to fall short. We might disagree on where our country is going wrong. But all of us could point out some problems with our country. That’s why we have ICAC and Royal Commissions, and Police Forces and Investigative Journalists, and parliaments and separation of powers. And yes, we should labour to make it better. But ultimately, we will just move our frustration. Ultimately, all we can apply are band aids -- necessary but not sufficient -- on the problems caused by sin and death. Sin and death are the real problem. The bible makes it clear that God has built frustration into our current world, so that we hope for another world, a better one (Romans 8:20). Christians are really ‘aliens and strangers’ in this world (1 Peter 1:1, 17; 2:11). We might be Australian citizens, but our real citizenship is in heaven (Philippians 3:20). This isn’t disloyalty. It is realising that nations rise and fall -- Australia as much as Ancient Rome or Babylon -- but Jesus Christ is true king over every nation, and his kingdom will never end. Jesus testified before Pilate “My kingdom is not of this world.” (John 18:36). And so our hope is that King Jesus will one day return and finally fix up once and for all time the mess that we fallen humans have made of our world as a result of our shortsightedness, ignorance and sin. A prayer. Thank you God, for putting us here, in this time and place. Help us make it a better place. But come Lord Jesus. May your Kingdom, Lord Jesus Christ, come, and may your will be done on earth as it is in heaven, for the Kingdom and the power and the glory are yours, Lord Jesus, now and forever, Amen. Matt Olliffe

BAPTIST CHURCH UPDATE Lyndon Rumsey • Warragamba Baptist Church • Phone: 4774 1476 • www.warragambabaptist.net • Sunday Morning Service at 9.30 am

A Christian Chat with Lyndon Rumsey Matthew 8 records a miracle that Jesus performed, ‘When he came down from the mountainside, large crowds followed him. A man with leprosy came and knelt before him and said, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.” Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” Immediately he was cured of his leprosy.’ It is hard to imagine the turmoil and loneliness that lepers experienced in biblical times. On diagnosis they would be immediately isolated from their families, homes, friends and their church, they were outcasts. Any items that they had touched would be burnt; they would be sent to a place with other lepers. They would be forced to warn anyone who came near them that they were unclean. Yet Jesus’ first reaction was to defy the conventions of the day, Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man; the man at that point was not healed physically. Often with physical touch, it symbolises something much greater than the action; a hug, a kiss, a hand held or shaken. It symbolises acceptance, friendship, love, acknowledgment of the other person. For this man with leprosy, devoid of any form of physical intimacy, it would have released emotional healing in his life. Yet, the man sought release from his affliction, and Jesus granted his desire, He commanded him to “Be clean!” What an amazing miracle. For some of us physical touch, is an important part of who we are; for others of us we need just that bit more space; it really is a matter of personal choice. Jesus our Lord and Saviour wants to reach into us; into those places where we

most hurt, places where we have failed, places where we were most disappointed, places that we hide from others. Will you allow Jesus to touch your heart, your mind and your soul? He will bring wholeness to you, through the power of His miracles. Here once again His command “Be clean!” God bless you in this journey.

All Roads Lead to Luddenham

The category that has the judge’s both excited and expectant is the home brew challenge, the ales go to the taste test hoping to win great prizes made available thanks to ‘The Country Brewer’ at Kingswood. Making a return this year is the ever popular bush ironman. In this recreation of the day in the life of an Aussie stockman contestants have to perform such tasks as riding their horse over jumps whilst carrying bags of feed. As well as boiling a billy to get the day started; and finally consuming a cold pie and warm beer. Maybe you are not an equestrian star, but we still have events that you can contest. The ‘Yank-a-Ute’ race is always hotly fought out and involves teams of five people hauling a vehicle to the finish line to take out the huge prize as well as the glory of being the declared champion. Of course show staples such as two full days of horse classes and judging of both cattle and poultry will be keenly fought out with owners vying to take home a coveted blue ribbon. If watching stage entertainment is more your scene, well we have you covered there as well. The huge selection of acts taking to the podium include a poets breakfast to kick start the day. Also set to keep the stage buzzing are various singers, dance troops and a magician along with a display of live sea creatures. Furthermore for those who wish for a bit of fun; competitions ranging from fancy dress for humans and dogs as well as ice cream eating are sure to bring many laughs. Back this year by popular demand are the local Circaholics Anonymous with their fire eating and twirling show. Or watch the big men send the chips flying in the wood chopping section. Saturday night will see an Aussie pub rock band “IRONBARK ROCK” hit the stage and of course what show would be complete without the fireworks? An additional feature of this year’s programme is Circus Ring

From Pg ...1

Barkus; this is a travelling family circus that will keep all kids under the age of ninety-nine years of age laughing at the wild antics of these highly trained performing animals along with their human assistants. The show takes place in a big top tent and is totally free for the whole family. New to this year’s show is the spectacular moto-x riders with their death defying stunts. However at Luddenham we like to do things a little different. Rampt Mini FMX, will in point of fact be doing all the regular free style aerial feats upon 50cc motor bikes. That’s right those fun little bikes we all learnt to ride on will be back flipping and heart attack training ramp to ramp at the show. This is sure to be a huge high light of the weekend with the daredevil riders hanging around to sign autographs and have a chat to kids and big kids alike. Luddenham show grounds can be found on the corner of Park Rd and Campbell St and is one of only three grounds in the state still wholly owned by the community and as a result the annual show raises much needed funds for the upkeep of the facilities as well as next year’s show. Luddenham A.H and I Society boasts a proud history dating back 1891 when it was reported in the papers of the time “Luddenham may fairly lay claim to having the best first show ever held in the colony!”. This year’s committee, many of whose forebears were among the first organizers, are determined to live up to that high standard. The current committee, a small but very hard working band of local volunteers would like to thank all our sponsors as well as the army of great helpers who lend a hand to make this country event on the outskirts of Sydney such a success. Further information can be found on our website www.luddenhamshow.com.au or on our Facebook page Luddenham Show. See you on March 1st and 2nd 2014!

Vintage 1950’s and 60’s Festival The Penrith CBD Festival will take place on Saturday 22nd March, from 9am to 3pm and will be rockin’ all things vintage! Proudly sponsored by Vintage FM, Western Weekender and @ Print, there will be free entertainment throughout the day, set over 2 stages. Entertainment will include Smurfs 2 and cover bands playing the music of John Farnham, Tom Jones and Neil Diamond. Local dance school PAWS and Tamara Miles Singing School will have some great ideas in the Vintage theme this year for all to see. We are looking for more local schools to be involved in this fantastic day. On the day, there will also be Amazing Disco stilt walkers, face painters, an animal farm, FREE craft area and so much more. The kids will be smiling from ear to ear! The festival will play host to lots of local stalls, fun rides, vintage cars for the car lovers and of course a street parade at 12:30pm. “We are still seeking minor sponsors for the event. The more local support we receive, the more we can add to the festival for Penrith” said Gai Hawthorn of Penrith CBD Corporation. Please give us a call on 4722 5556 to discuss how we can help you promote your business this year as we anticipate over 20,000 people attending throughout the day.

We would like to thank everyone for their love and support through the loss of our dear Mother

PARENTS CORNER Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) NepeanStudent-Wellbeing Worker – Mulgoa Public School Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services Ph: 0409 986 121 Centre: 4721 8520 Blog: http://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com

Have you, as a parent, decided that you need to look after yourself a bit more this year? ‘Looking after yourself’ is one of the five keys to positive parenting in the Triple P programme. You’ve got to live it to give it. What small thing can you do today to take care of yourself? Every day, do one small thing that you enjoy and that satisfies your hands, warms your heart, or feeds your mind. How we feel about ourselves affects how we parent. Some parents have said to me that they only care about what happens for their kids and they no longer care about themselves. They have said “my life is over now, it’s all about the kids”. I urge all parents to take care of themselves, because that is all about the kids too. Your children have mirror neurons in their brains. Mirror neurons help us to detect emotion in other people. If you think you can hide your sadness, depression, anger, annoyance, or frustration from your children, think again. Your children are like a radar for how you are feeling. Why? Because their emotional and physical safety depend on it. But not only that, if your child is picking up that you are sad or angry, they blame themselves. Deep down inside, they think they are the cause of your anger or upset, no matter how many times you tell them that they are not. And that’s not good for their emotional and mental health. When I was teaching a social and emotional programme in a disadvantaged school, and I asked the students from preschool to Year 6 to name some emotions, they all said (even the littlies) “happy, sad, depressed, and angry”. They could only name those four emotions, because that’s all they heard their parent/carer saying and what they saw them feeling. Diet and exercise are important to you too. Choose the salad sandwich over the chips. If you are not that keen on gyms or jogging, incidental exercise is good too, such as walking to school to pick up the children, or doing squats and stretches whilst hanging the washing on the line. When do you take the time to focus on your adult relationships? Many parents tell me they feel isolated and judged in their role as parents. Who supports you whilst you have the important job of supporting your children? Where can you get support from caring and interested people? If you are feeling overwhelmed, depressed, anxious, or having persistent difficulties in your relationships, seek professional help and counselling. You owe it to yourself and your children to be as well as you can be (intellectually, physically, emotionally, and socially).

Pool Safety

“Congrats Kya!

Pool fencing is an integral part of child safety when it comes to backyard swimming pools. Due to the significant safety risk that backyard pools can pose, any pool that can be filled with water to a depth of 300mm or more is required to be surrounded by a barrier that complies with Australian Standard 1926.1 Safety barriers for swimming pools. A pool safety checklist can be obtained from the States swimming pool register at www.swimmingpoolregister.nsw.gov.au to enable you to self-assess your pool fencing. The following is a fundamental list of pool fencing requirements: • A pool fence MUST be a minimum of 1200mm (1.2m) from ground level with a gap of no more than 100mm above ground level. • There are to be NO footholds within 900mm of top of the fence. • Pool gates must OPEN OUTWARDS from the pool area; be self-closing from any open position and must latch shut on the first swing. • A CPR resuscitation chart is to be displayed inside the pool area. Wollondilly Mayor, Cr Benn Banasik is encouraging residents to check their pool fencing. “"Backyard Pool Legislation sets out the safety guidelines for pools. Having a pool or spa with the correct safety measures can mean the difference between life and death. Now is the perfect time to check your pool safety compliance,â€? he said. In the last few years, inflatable and prefabricated DIY pools have become popular alternatives to the cost of a full size pool and many are installed without first consulting Council. These pools pose the same risk to children as larger pools and may still require approval if they have the capability to hold more than 2000 litres. As of 29 October 2013 all swimming pools in NSW must be registered on the abovementioned state register. Penalties apply for pools that are installed without approval, where a pool is not registered or where a child-resistant barrier is not installed or maintained. If members of the public have concerns with the suitability of their pool safety provisions, Council provides a service where pool fencing and isolation barriers can be checked for compliance by authorised officers for a nominal fee. If you have any questions relating to pool isolation requirements, please contact Council's Building Team on (02) 4677 1100 for assistance between 8am and 10am weekdays.

Local Wallacia School Student, Kya Gerhard, was awarded the Citizenship award at W a l l a c i a Public School’s end of year presentation day held at the Hubertus Club, Luddenham in December 2013. Kya proudly held the position of School Captain for 2013, representing Wallacia School at many official functions. Kya met, and was presented with a certificate for her leadership role across the local schools from (then serving) Penrith Mayor Greg Davies at the Evans Theatre in Penrith. With the support of her mum, Vanessa, Kya applied to attend Camden High School and was successful in her application. We wish her well as she embarks on another stage in her life. We know she will do us proud as she has in the past. Supplied By: Trisha Williamson

Australia Day Award Winners The 2014 Wollondilly Australia Day Award recipients were announced at an Australia Day ceremony held last month at the Picton Botanic Gardens. Congratulations to the outstanding list of Australia Day Award nominees, with the winners listed below:

New Year’s Surprise A woman from the Wallacia area got the shock of her life when she discovered she’d been a millionaire for one week and didn’t even know it. The winner, who wishes to remain anonymous, was in a state of disbelief when she checked her Monday Lotto entry last month and found out she’d won a first division prize of $1 million! “I screamed when I found out! I still can’t believe this,” the ecstatic winner exclaimed. “It’s unreal. What an incredible start to 2014!” The winner said she wants to use her $1 million Monday Lotto windfall to buy her dream property. “I think we’ll be looking for an acreage property so we can have plenty of room to spread out.” The winning 6-game QuickPick was purchased at Wallacia Newsagency, Shop 3 in Wallacia Shopping Centre, 1 Park Road in Wallacia. The winning numbers in Monday & Wednesday Lotto draw 3308 on Monday 30 December 2013 were 22, 21, 9, 18, 42 and 39 with the supplementary numbers of 34 and 28.

The awards were judged by the Australia Day Award Committee. The Committee comprises of Councillors and members of the community. Chairperson of the Australia Day Award Committee, Mayor Cr Benn Banasik said, “It is always a challenge to single out one individual or community group for special recognition when there are so many unsung heroes in our community. “The quality of the nominees and the broad diversity of their achievements made this year’s selection particularly difficult.”

COUNSELLING CORNER with Linda Cassell @ Psychology Works 4 All

P: 4773 3057 or 0421 507 191 E: lindacassell@bigpond.com

When something goes wrong, one of the first responses many people have is to blame someone. If you can blame someone else, you can avoid the fear of not being good enough Maybe you panic when you may have done something wrong because in the past others have rejected you or perhaps punished you for making a mistake. Blaming is the way you attempt to protect yourself. Whatever the reason, blame usually leads to conflict and damaged relationships in addition to blocking problem solving. You call each other names and yell about how flawed the other person is; using words like lazy, selfish, thoughtless, and stupid, plus a few that are unmentionable. Letting go of blaming behaviour can be difficult. Here are some ideas to consider. 1. Ask yourself if it really matters who was at fault. 2. Focus on what you can do, not what someone else should have done or could do Put your energy into getting past the difficult situation, not on who caused it. 3. Stay in the present. Bringing up past examples of someone else’s behaviour to justify your anger is not helpful in resolving the situation and only makes the situation more upsetting and volatile. 4. Stick to the facts. Just describe the situation without judging. “The car is out of petrol and I am going to be late for work.” Remember to not blame yourself either. 5. Express your feelings without directing them at someone else. Say, “I’m feeling angry and hurt,” rather than “You hurt me,” or “I’m afraid I’ll lose my job,” not “Your stupidity will get me fired.”

6. Use language of acceptance. Your basic view is that you and others are doing the best possible and that you are all human beings who make mistakes. 7. Look for what others are doing right. Search for the positive actions that others take. Train yourself to notice the positive. 8. Practice compassion. Replace your anger with understanding. Search for a way to understand others’ behaviour.

Is a Fixed Rate Home Loan Really Right for You? With recent attention on interest rates and the push to fix your home loan, it’s timely to remind people that a fixed rate home loan isn’t for everyone. Here are the facts: Yes, interest rates are currently at historical lows. And yes, fixed rates (traditionally at a premium to variable rates) are currently lower than variable rates in many cases. And finally, fixed interest rates are on the rise, so if you do want to fix your home loan then now is the time to act! With the advantages of protecting against increasing interest rates and providing certainty of repayment for years to come, then why wouldn’t you fix your home loan rate? Here are some reasons a fixed loan may not be the right option for you: • They are usually less flexible, with limits on additional repayments and break costs, which can be thousands of dollars. • There is normally no redraw during the fixed term. • Most lenders won’t allow offset accounts be linked to your fixed home loan. • Without paying the ‘rate lock’ fee (can be up to $750 or 0.15% of the loan amount) you usually get the prevailing fixed rate at settlement – this could be higher than the rate you were quoted. Making the right loan choice is about educated decisions, and it’s always important to speak with a finance expert before deciding on the right loan structure for you.

PAWS A WHILE

With Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital 377 Wentworth Rd, Orchard Hills Ph: 4736 2027

New Veterinarian and 2 New Veterinary Donation to The Guide Dogs for Nurses!! Santa Photos With Your Pets We have continued to grow over the last 4 years since I bought Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital and we have hired a third veterinarian and 2 new nurses. How exciting! Theresa is our third veterinarian and she started here in November 2013. Theresa grew up locally with a well recognised appreciation for all animals. After beginning her animal studies with a degree and a masters in wildlife ecology from The University of Sydney, Theresa pursued her veterinary interests by moving to Perth and completing her veterinary degree at Murdoch University in 2012. Theresa is enjoying settling back into her life on the east coast with her Doberman, Bella, and her well travelled cat, Pax (who made frequent journeys between Sydney and Perth!). She also enjoys keeping her horses, chooks and reptiles. Sheridan is one of the new veterinary nurses. Sheridan completed certificate IV in veterinary nursing in 2009. Sheridan started her veterinary nursing career in 2007 at Pittwater on the Northern Beaches. She had a very enjoyable and fulfilling 6 years there before moving to the Hawkesbury and starting at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. In her spare time she loves to get out camping, four wheel driving and abseiling. Sheridan’s love for animals began at a very early age and since then she has had many birds (budgies, cockatiels, ring neck and eclectus parrot), mice and fish. Sheridan finds veterinary nursing to be a very rewarding career especially when giving advice to clients to help them provide better care for their pets. Rachel is one of the new veterinary nurses. Rachel graduated as a Veterinary Nurse in December 2012 at Richmond TAFE and she hasn’t looked back since. She enjoys every aspect of being a Veterinary nurse, especially seeing our loved ones recover to their usual happy selves. She has always loved animals and knew she wanted to work in a job that involved helping them. She enjoys spending time with friends and family when not working, and enjoys rock climbing. She has 2 beautiful much loved Labradors, 2 domestic cats & a ragdoll that get up to mischief together.

Santa Claus visited Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital during December 2013 to take photos with your pets. From all of your donations for the Santa photos, we raised $1200 which was all donated to the Guide Dogs NSW!! We all love giggling and laughing to get your pets attention whilst on Santa’s knee for the photos. We had lots of fun and the Guide Dogs get a great donation. Thanks again for participating. Check out Bella, Pony and Callie for their Santa Photo

We look forward to meeting you and your pets at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, and please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team. For more information check out . our Facebook, website www.orchardhillsvet.com.au or call 02 4736 2027.
