Great Walk for Charity Silverdale mum Kerri Colquhoun and her daughter Sara are about to embark on the journey of a lifetime. They will join Inspired Adventures' "Steps Towards A Cure Great Wall Of China Trek" in support of the National Breast Cancer Foundation, raising vital funds for cancer research in the process. The mother and daughter realised that they could combine an unforgettable experience with a physical challenge and hopefully make a difference by raising money for such a worthwhile charity. As the National Breast Cancer Foundation receives no government funding, support from the community is essential if the foundation is to achieve its goal of zero deaths by 2030. When Sara was asked why she chose to support the National Breast Cancer Foundation these were her thoughts “I decided to do ‘Steps Towards a Cure’ for many different reasons! Being a pilates instructor I get the chance to affect change in people’s lives everyday but I still felt like I could use my love of fitness to create even more positive change in this world. After completing the Mother’s Day classic 8km run I was inspired by the number of men and women walking and running to support breast cancer research. “ Continued Pg 7.

From the Editor Here we are in August already! And wasn’t July a busy month? For me, it was a month of reflection and reminiscing. I spent time thinking about friends of the past and present, life gets so busy but nothing can replace the memories and special times we have spent with loved ones over the years. It’s nice to take a trip down memory lane and remind ourselves of all the special friends that have held a part in our lives at one time or another. This month, our resident expert in Counselling Corner raises some interesting points about resilience and facing life’s challenges on page 12. We also have many articles centred around the Community spirit we so often witness across our wonderful Community, not to mention an amazing success story for one of our locals, see page 6 for more details. Of course, our paper would not be complete without a delicious winter warming recipe on page 8 that’s sure to please. Spoil your dad next month as Father’s Day falls on the 1st September; please spare a thought for those that will find this time difficult for one reason or another. For now, enjoy this month’s community news and this month I urge you to take a moment to appreciate just how wonderful you are!

A dad is someone who wants to catch you before you fall but instead picks you up, brushes you off, and lets you try again.
”
Father’s Day is less than a month away, so kids, it’s time to start planning a very special day for that superman in your life. September 1st is the day when men, women and children all over Australia celebrate their dads for all the love, joy and excitement they bring into our lives. Of course it goes without saying that we appreciate our dads 365 days of the year, but this is the one day that you can actually tell him just how much he means to you. One unknown author wisely proclaimed, “A father is someone you look up to no matter how tall you grow.” So show your dad this Father’s day just how much you look up to him. Spare a thought for the kids who, for whatever reason, don’t have a dad around. For some, it’s a lonely and isolating day at school when the rest of the kids have their dads with them for the customary Father’s Day school activities. For others, it’s a bittersweet day, with memories of dads who passed too quickly from this world – no longer here to share our triumphs and tragedies, but always sharing a special place in our hearts!

A Quiz: Where You Will End Up? Where do people go after they die? What is the destiny of planet earth? What is heaven like? What does the bible tell us about the new heaven and the new earth? Test your understanding of the bible by answering the following questions. 1. The people we should consult for reliable information about heaven are: (a) People who have almost died; (b) People who have actually died; (c) People who have never been there; (d) Jesus Christ, and his Apostles. 2. After a person dies: (a) They cease to have any consciousness; (b) They consciously face judgment; (c) They become an angel; (d) They become a star in the sky; (e) They are re-incarnated. 3. The basis of the judgment is: (a) knowing that St Peter is at the gates holding the key; (b) whether a person has been especially evil; (c) whether a person repents and trusts in Jesus Christ; (d) whether a person has kept the laws of their religion. 4. No one ever need fear hell… (a) because it does not exist; (b) because a God of love will never send anyone there; (c) because, if they repent and believe, Christ’s death and resurrection saves them; (d) because God will give people a second chance after they die. 5. The eternal life to which Jesus invites us: (a) has no more death, mourning, crying or pain; (b) is described as a marriage feast where Jesus marries the church forever; (c) has more to do with glorifying Jesus and less to do with you and me; (d) all of the above. 6. The joys of the Kingdom of Heaven, according to the bible, are… (a) rugby, ‘the game they play in heaven’; (b) primarily being reunited with your spouse, children or parents; (c) getting your own harem of virgins or populating a planet; (d) praising Jesus Christ, with the rest of redeemed humanity. 7. The eternal and final abode of those admitted to the kingdom of heaven is: (a) the clouds, with harps and choir music; (b) a massive city with billions of other people; (c) as disembodied spirits in a fourth dimension; (d) an unpopulated ‘garden of eden’ with rugged beauty. 8. The ultimate destiny of planet earth and humanity is: (a) the earth will denuded by fire, then repopulated by a resurrected humanity; (b) both will be destroyed by nuclear war or environmental catastrophe; (c) both will be saved by careful environmental management and regulation of nuclear

weapons. (d) both will be destroyed by our expanding sun in billions of years. 9. The most sensible action to ensure humanity’s long term survival on planet earth is: (a) There is none. Eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow we die; (b) Campaign vigorously for environmental protection and nuclear non-proliferation; (c) Make sure we believe in Jesus Christ and live God’s way; (d) Prepare to move to the Moon and/or Mars. 10. I can know that I am going to enter the Kingdom of Heaven because… (a) I am a good person; (b) I haven’t murdered anyone; (c) I was born in the right church and take the sacraments; (d) though I’m a sinner, Jesus Christ died and rose again for me, and by trusting in him, I can have eternal life. Answers. 1. (d) John 3:13: ‘No-one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven’… Jesus Christ. Jesus commanded his Apostles to teach the nations (Matthew 28:19-20). The bible warns not to consult the dead (Leviticus 19:31; 20:6; Isaiah 8:19). 2. (b) Hebrews 9:27: ‘Humans are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment.’ Humans do not become angels, a star, or are re-incarnated. Humans have a conscious existence after they die (Luke 16:19-31; Philippians 1:23; Revelation 6:9-11). 3. (c) Acts 20:21. 4. (c). Jesus and his Apostles say Hell exists and the loving God will send people there for their sin (Matthew 10:28; Luke 12:5-7; 2 Peter 2:4-10). But Jesus says ‘whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned’ (John 5:24). 5. (d). Revelation 21:1-8, 2 Thessalonians 1:5-10. 6. (d) Revelation 4-5. There is no sex in heaven (Matthew 22:30). Our relatives will only be there if they have repented and believed. 7. (b) Revelation 21:2, 21:10-22:5. 8. (a) 2 Peter 3:3-13. 9. (c) 2 Peter 3:3-18. 10. (d) John 3:16-18: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.” (NIV)

BAPTIST CHURCH UPDATE

A Christian Chat with Pastor Ron Baker
Someone once said ‘A man’s greatest enemy is himself.’ Some time ago I read a story about a young soldier which made me think again of the internal warfare of man. This story revealed an angry young man at war within himself. His war began long before he joined the army. His war was a moral battle within himself. He had been unfaithful to his wife and his body was sick. Indeed the moral problems that are part of life today have existed for centuries and they will continue to exist until we hear the whole of society cry out ‘How can I escape this moral warfare?’ The bible has an answer to that question in 1st.Corinthians 10 Verse 13 ’’There hath no temptation taken you such is common to man. But God is faithful who will not suffer
you to be tempted above that ye are able. But will with the temptation also make a way to escape. That ye may be able to bear it.’ the Lord Jesus Christ makes a way of escape for those who really want to escape. He gives those who believe in him an armour. The bible in Ephesians 6 Verse13 talks of that armour when it says ’’Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God. That ye may be able to withstand in the evil day. And having done all to stand..’’ Dear friends please allow me to encourage you by saying that those who believe that Jesus Christ is their saviour and who have been equipped by him to withstand temptation ,will not be afraid when they go to their homes again. For them the moral warfare within will be over, and the victory flag of peace will be shown to the world. Pastor Ron Baker
Local MX Star Shines Silverdale resident Aaron Tanti, 17, has been chosen to represent Australia in the 2013 World Junior Motocross Championships taking place in Jinin in the Czech Republic in August. Aaron will be competing on his 125cc KTM motocross bike. Aaron has been competing in motocross since he was 4 years old. He has won numerous State and Australian Titles. At the age of 8 he also raced overseas in the US at ‘The World Minis’. With less than one month’s notice and preparation for the major event, Aaron’s family and friends organised a fundraiser to help fulfil his dream of representing Australia and racing motocross overseas on the world stage. The fundraising night was held at 'The Lone Pine Tavern' at Rooty Hill in July. He is now one step closer to realising his dream.
Good luck Aaron!

Great Walk for Charity
From Pg 1.
“After researching more about the National Breast Cancer Foundation and their goal for zero deaths by 2030 I was ready to participate in my next challenge! That’s when I discovered the Great Wall of China trek and I was hooked from the first second.” “I am so excited to be a part of this adventure and support the National Breast Cancer Foundation and all the mums, grandmas, sisters, daughters, wives and best friends who battle breast cancer every year! I am even prouder that my own mum will be there with me every step of the way!! Together we will make a difference!” The Colquhoun family have been active members within the local community for many years, with Kerri employed as an educator at Warragamba Preschool and her eldest daughter Ashley teaching at Mulgoa Public School. Although Sara now lives and works in Melbourne, running her own Pilates studio, she still has strong connections to her home town. She danced and taught for several years at In-Motion Danceworks at Silverdale, and returns to run occasional dance workshops. Sara is looking forward to returning home more frequently over the next ten months to assist with fundraising and preparing for the China trek - which will include many mother daughter fitness training routines! If you would like to support Kerri and Sara they will be holding a High Tea Fundraiser in the beautiful Mulgoa Valley Receptions on the 20th of October. There will be endless tea, scrumptious food, games and great prizes to be won! Tickets are $50.00 ea, with $20.00 from each ticket going directly to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Bookings are essential and early indications are that it will be a very popular event! If you would like to reserve your ticket or to book a table with family and friends, (8 or 12 per table) please contact Kerri 4774 1691, 0412 968 338, email col55@yahoo.com.au or Sara 0415 705 567 email sara@alignedforlife.com.au. The entry forms will be available on Council’s website in early August and entries will close on 9 September. The competition will be judged between 16 and 20 September. PARENTS’ CORNER Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) NepeanStudent-Wellbeing Worker – Mulgoa Public School Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services Ph: 0409 986 121 Centre: 4721 8520 Blog: http://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com
“If I had my child to raise all over again, I’d build self-esteem first, and the house later. I’d finger-paint more, and point the finger less. I would do less correcting and more connecting. I’d take my eyes off my watch, and watch with my eyes. I’d take more hikes and fly more kites. I’d stop playing serious, and seriously play. I would run through more fields and gaze at more stars. I’d do more hugging and less tugging.” – Diane Loomans Which do you do most of – hugging or tugging? Touch is so very important for humans. Psychotherapist, Virginia Satir, says that we need four hugs per day for survival, eight hugs per day for maintenance, and twelve hugs per day for growth. Tiny babies that have all of their needs attended to but don’t receive touch, affection, and attention are at risk of dying from ‘failure to thrive’. It’s so easy to touch and hug our little ones because they are so cute and climb all over us a lot of the time. But older kids need hugs too, just as much as the little ones. They need hugs and positive attention more than they need iPads, iPods, and Minecraft. Humans are first and foremost social and emotional beings, not logical or rational. We are very good at building bridges, and spaceships, and super computers, but essentially we all have the need to belong – to other people. I see so many kids, lost in the technological world, but struggling socially and emotionally because what they really need is their parents’ attention and affection. The Commonwealth government recommends that children aged between 5 and 18 years should have no more than 2 hours of screen time (from all sources) per day (http://raisingchildren. net.au/articles/screen_time.html). Attention is a good thing. It’s a survival mechanism. If your child can’t get attention from the most important person in her world (that’s YOU), who is he or she going to get it from? How much of that attention is positive and how much is negative? For every negative way of parenting there is a positive way of parenting. As Diane Loomans so eloquently says, she would do less correcting and more connecting. What is filling your children’s hearts and minds?

Mulgoa Public School Update from the desk of Principal: Mr Rob Francis
Term Three has commenced with a flurry. Students are busily preparing for public speaking competitions and the Premier’s Spelling Bee. The NED Show performed at our school with the NED message: N – Never Give Up E – Encourage Others; and D – Do your best. The performers communicated the message with entertaining magic tricks and yo-yos. There are now a number of students keenly trying out their yo-yos in the playground. Kindergarten Orientation has commenced each Wednesday with a number of new families planning to attend our school next year. Our Open Day on Education Week was well attended by parents and the community. We celebrated one hundred days of learning with a “One Hundred Days” parade. Children came dressed in costumes that reflected something to do with the number “one hundred”. Some costumes were very imaginative. Also on the day we had open classrooms and celebrated with a huge “One Hundred Days of Learning” cake. This was followed by the Camp Quality Puppet show, lunch and a disco. Our Small Schools Athletics Carnival was held the very next day in beautiful weather. The frenzy continues in the upcoming weeks. Mrs Forbes and Miss Saunders, our hardworking dance teachers, are preparing students for both the Penrith Valley Performing Arts Festival and the Blue Mountains – Nepean Dance Festival. The school will celebrate Science Week on the 16th August with a Science Fair. Many students will be designing, making and creating science models and experiments to showcase their learning. Book Week follows soon after and we are having a special Visitor’s Assembly to show what we have been doing with literature. Our huge fundraiser is the Country Market Day at school on Sunday, August 25th from 10.00am – 3.00pm. We welcome the public and promise a fantastic day with plenty of stalls, rides, performances and lots of fun! Do come and join us! My dedicated staff are also engaged in teacher professional learning on the “Get Reading Right” program to further improve literacy standards across the school. I continue to be amazed by the dedication and cohesiveness of students, staff, parents and the community. Together we work to make a great school! Thank you all! Rob Francis

PAWS A WHILE We are Expanding!!!
With Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital 377 Wentworth Rd, Orchard Hills Ph: 4736 2027
Thank you to all of our clients and furry friends who have helped us to expand our business. It is hard to believe that only 3 and 1/2 years ago, we were a one veterinarian practice! We have steadily built up the business to employ a second veterinarian (Erin) and extra nurses. We are now about to employ a third veterinarian. To accommodate the new veterinarian, we will be building a new consultation room. So the builder and plumber will be hard at work to build the new room within the next month. Feel free to drop in and check out the new facilities. Again, thank you for your patronage, we truly appreciate the friendships and referrals to your friends. Without you we would not be growing!
Open Day 2013
We are starting to organise this year’s Open Day. Our celebrity guests in past years have included Dr Chris Brown in 2011 and Dr Katrina Warren in 2012. They are hard acts to follow. I wonder who will be coming to this year’s Open Day?? You will have to wait and see!! We are planning the same fun things as the previous years, including jumping castles, sausage sizzle, dog competitions, face painting, hospital guided tours and lots of stalls. Watch this space for the celebrity and the date.
RSPCA Cupcake Day
A Cupcake Day is a great way to raise awareness and money for the RSPCA. We are hosting a Cupcake Day at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital on Monday 19th August 2013 between 9am-7pm. Pop in to enjoy a cupcake (or two!) and even a ‘pupcake’ for your beloved pet. We have made ‘pupcakes’ which are dog friendly and do not contain any chocolate which is toxic to dogs. If you are unable to make it here on the day, then you can still contribute to the RSPCA via an online donation.
