Local School Extends To Years 11 And 12 After 15 years of successful Kindergarten to Year 10 schooling, the Board of Nepean Christian School at Mulgoa has approved progression into the senior years of secondary schooling.

Year 11 will commence at the beginning of 2014 and will provide an innovative and focused approach where students study and complete some subjects in one year, rather than the normal two years. This enables students to focus their attention on a smaller number of subjects each year and reduces the stress of having to do every HSC exam at the same time. Year 12 will follow in 2015.

Flexibility of subject delivery will be provided for highly motivated and capable students. Teachers will be available to senior students out of school hours for advice and encouragement. Student independence with wisdom will be enacted within the school’s distinctively Christian view of life.

Whilst Nepean is gladly and openly Christian, it will respect the faith journey of its Year 11 and 12 students as they approach adulthood in an exciting, yet broken, world. A Christian background is not a pre-requisite for enrolment at the school.

Current Year 10 students and parents are involved with consultation regarding such things as Years 11 and 12 uniform, buildings, procedures and traditions. The school values strong community involvement.

From the Editor Welcome to this special Easter Edition of the Mulgoa Valley & Warradale Gazette. I know my two boys are very excited to see the stores fill with the sugary supplies that go hand in hand with Easter. Come to think of it, I am certain they commenced filling the shelves with Easter Eggs as soon as Christmas was over.

Of course there is much more behind Easter than Easter Eggs and Easter Bunnies; see our local Parish updates to read about the real meaning behind this special time of the year.

This edition, as always, includes a huge dose of information from our regular contributors in Parents Corner, Paws A While and Counselling Corner. Truck Noise on Park Road Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies MP earlier this month met with Wallacia residents who are fed up with loud trucks using Park Road, Wallacia late at night and early in the morning.

Mrs Davies said many residents had contacted her office to complain about being kept awake by trucks travelling on Park Road in the middle of the night.

“I have had reports of b-doubles and other trucks using Park Road 24 hours a day. It is completely unfair to the residents to expect them to live with this.” Mrs Davies said.

Mrs Davies said that following the complaints, she wrote to every resident of Park Road and encouraged them to report

“I recently met with the Acting General Manager of Wollondilly Shire Council to discuss the concerns. He informed me that there has been a significant increase in the number of reports in the last 6 months –so the community has done a great job reporting each incident”.

“Wollondilly Shire Council have requested that residents continue to report every time a truck uses Park Road late at night.”

Mrs Davies said that residents should report trucks to Wollondilly Shire Council on 02 4677 1100 or to Council@ Wollondilly.nsw.gov.au.

Easter Brings Joy from Grief

Because of easter, each of us can know the joyous hope of eternal life and God's wonderful love in Jesus.

In our world, we see all manner of sickness, sadness and suffering. Because of easter, these realities become like the labour pains of an expectant mother. In Jesus, they issue in blessed new life (John 16:20-21; Romans 8:22-24).

In my job, I have the sad task of conducting funerals.

Because of easter, and through faith in Jesus, these issue in the joyous hope of being with Jesus forever (Luke 23:43; John 14:1-3; Philippians 1:23).

In funerals, we put a dead body in the ground. Because of what Jesus did at easter, this is only the planting of a seed, which will bring about abundant new life in due course. (John 12:24) I am now not talking about the yearly celebration with bunnies, chocolate, figoli (if you're maltese), family, and the long weekend. I am talking about the first easter. On Good Friday 33AD, Jesus suffered and died to take our sin. On that Sunday, he rose to new life defeating death.

These events fulfilled what the prophet Isaiah said over 600 years earlier: 'But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. ... After the suffering of his soul, he will see the light of life and be satisfied; by his knowledge my righteous servant will justify many, and he will bear their iniquities.

(Isaiah 53:5, 11 NIV).

Bicentenary Bridges Great Divide It’s almost 200 years since the first Blue Mountains crossing, when Australians will retrace this deciding moment for European settlement and our nation.

To recognise the starting point of Blaxland, Lawson and Wentworth’s epic journey at Blaxland’s farm, St Marys, Penrith City Council will launch a three-week series of major commemorations in May 2013. The celebrations cover the start of the trek up the mountains in May 1813 to the explorers’ triumphant return some three weeks later.

Penrith City Council has worked with a community committee to develop these notto-be-missed activities: – Breakfast Launch and Re-enactment trek - 11 May – Family Camp Out on the Nepean River - 11 May – Historical Festival at Mamre Homestead - 19 May – “Back to Emu Plains” weekend - 25 and 26 May To add to the excitement, Penrith Library will hold a “Makings of a City History Conference Crossing the Great Divide” on 9 March and Penrith Civic Centre will host an exhibition through April-May. Penrith Mayor Mark Davies said an extra treat would be appearances by renowned Aussie actor Jack Thompson as part of Council’s Bicentenary program. “We are proud to have Australian icon, Jack Thompson as patron of Penrith City Council’s Blue Mountains crossing commemorations. Keep an eye out as he’ll be attending several events,” Councillor Davies said.

Something Missing!

The other night I was watching a programme on television about the family.

It was the story of two sisters who had been separated from birth. One felt there was something missing in her life. She was aware that she was an adopted child, and began to enquire about her birth family. With the help of a T.V.show. they eventually found her sister, who was only a matter of three miles away in another English village. She also discovered that she was a twin, and when they met the void was filled. There was much joy and excitement.

One of the most exciting ideas I have come across in my journey through the Christian life is the thought that in every believer’s life a divine story is being written. Through all the countless occurrences of our lives a guiding hand is at work, taking the raw material of life and making from it a story-line that, even though it may be hidden from us at the moment, will, when viewed from the vantage point of eternity, astonish us.

If you believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and have accepted Him as your Saviour then your life is not a series of haphazard events, but a narrative.

God has the ability to take everything that happens to us and make out of it a story. Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you”.

Before we enter into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, life is empty, lacking in purpose, void, something is Advert missing.

Easter Facts • The date of Easter Sunday changes every year because it’s celebrated on the first Sunday after the Paschal Full Moon. The Paschal Full Moon is part of the Ecclesiastical Calendar and varies considerably, so Easter Sunday can be any time from March 22nd to April 25th.

• The first symbol of Easter was a chicken breaking out of its shell (Christ’s resurrection).

• The tradition of giving eggs at Easter time has been traced back to Persians, Egyptians, Gauls, Greeks and Romans, to whom the egg was a symbol of life.

• The most famous decorated Easter eggs were those made by the well-known goldsmith, Peter Carl Faberge. In 1883 the Russian Czar, Alexander, commissioned Faberge to make a special Easter gift for his wife, the Empress Marie.The first Faberge egg was an egg within an egg. It had an outside shell of platinum and enamelled white which opened to reveal a smaller gold egg. The smaller egg, in turn, opened to display a golden chicken and a jewelled replica of the Imperial crown.

This special Faberge egg so delighted the Czarina that the Czar promptly ordered the Faberge firm to design further eggs to be delivered every Easter. In later years Nicholas II, Alexander’s son, continued the custom.

Warragamba Dam Spills

Wombats Welcome

Following heavy rainfall across Sydney’s water supply catchments Warragamba Dam reached full capacity on Monday 25th February and started spilling. Discharges continued from the dam’s drum and radial gates as part of post flood procedures. This is to lower the water level in the dam to just below the full supply level.

As at 8am on this day, the total dam storage reached 94.7%. The Sydney Catchment Authority publishes weekly bulk water storage and supply reports to provide information about how much rainfall has been recorded and how full the dams are.

Warragamba JRLFC would like to welcome all our players & families new & old to what is shaping up to be another great season of Rugby League for the Wombats.

Ever have something happen that upset you, and you just wanted someone to listen to you? You didn’t want advice or criticism. You wanted someone to acknowledge your feelings, to empathise, and to hear you. You wanted someone to tell you how much it sucks, and how disappointed you must be.

And, so it is with children.

Acknowledging your child’s feelings won’t make them soft or sooks or cry babies. It will make them feel understood. They will feel seen and heard, valued and loved. And they will get over their hurt quicker with less resentment because meeting the need extinguishes the need. It will help them bounce back from disappointment, because life can be full of hurt and disappointment and it’s nice to be able to have someone to talk to about it. A child that experiences empathy will become empathic.

So, how do you do it?

1. Notice the emotion Notice how you think your child is feeling. It’s ok if you guess incorrectly, your child will usually tell you what he or she is feeling if you approach it this way.

2. Clarify with a question A question will help your child figure out how he or she feels.

3. Reflect the emotion Reflect the emotion your child is telling you or state what you believe your child is feeling.

4. Locate the emotion in the body Emotions can be felt in the body and the head.

Part of emotional intelligence is recognising when you are starting to feel a strong emotion by noticing what your body is doing and what your mind is thinking.

5. Empathise Talk about how you would feel in the same situation.

6. Explore You might like to follow up with a question or comment to get more details about the situation or explore more emotions.

Notice how in this process, there is not a barrage of questions, advice, or moral reasoning. The parent does not dismiss or deny how the child is feeling or try to distract him from his feelings. The parent does not tell him to “get over it” or “get on with it” or “don’t worry, it could be worse”. The parent does not jump into solving the problem or talking about what happened to her once upon a time.

The parent does not take the other person’s side.

It’s a process of delving down into the child’s feelings and emotions with him and coming out the other side together. If you do this often enough, your child will learn to accept and manage her own strong emotions, learn how to solve problems, and learn to know when she is coping well or when she needs to get help.

This is emotional intelligence. Sounds good, doesn’t it?

But this process can be difficult for parents. If you are not comfortable with some of these strong feelings, you will try to push your child through it as quickly as possible to resolve your own discomfort. Most parents say they can deal with extremes of most emotions, but anger pushes their buttons. The important thing is acknowledging that you are uncomfortable with some emotions and working your way through it too. If you think back to your childhood, your own parents may not have been comfortable with the same emotions you have difficulty with now. That’s why it’s called a process, every day we do a little bit better.

Welcome to the new school year. Congratulations to Danielle MacKay, Brooke Hoban, Carla Penza, Zac Andonopolous, Isaac Klaser and Addison Carney who are our student leaders for 2013. They were commissioned into their leadership roles at the opening school mass on 15th February.

Later this month they will participate in the National Young Leaders Day at the Sydney Entertainment Centre. This is a great day for students to learn about how they can develop and use their abilities to better serve the school and their communities during this year and the years ahead.

WHAT’S COOKING? While the Easter Bunny is busy putting all his eggs in one giant basket, you can hop to it and start preparing for Easter too with these very cute Easter treats!

Easter Bunny Biscuits Ingredients • Makes 16 125g butter, softened 1/2 cup caster sugar 1 egg yolk 2 1/2 tablespoons golden syrup 2 cups plain flour 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda 3 teaspoons ground ginger 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 1 cup pure icing sugar, sifted 1/2 small lemon, juiced ribbon, for decoration Method 1. Preheat oven to 180°C. Line 2 baking trays with baking paper.

2. Using an electric mixer, cream butter and caster sugar until pale and creamy. Add egg yolk and golden syrup. Beat to combine. Sift flour, bicarbonate of soda, ginger and cinnamon together over butter mixture. Stir with a wooden spoon to form a stiff dough.

3. Press dough into a 10cm round. Roll out between 2 sheets of baking paper until 5mm thick. Place, between baking paper, on a tray.

Refrigerate for 20 minutes or until firm.

4. Using an 8cm rabbit shaped biscuit cutter, cut 16 biscuits from dough. Place on prepared trays. Using a chopstick or skewer, punch 1 hole at the top of each biscuit and make small indentations on biscuits to decorate.

5. Bake for 15 minutes or until firm to touch. Allow to cool on trays (biscuits will firm further on cooling).

6. Sift icing sugar into a bowl. Gradually add 1 tablespoon lemon juice and stir until icing is smooth. Spoon into a small snap-lock bag.

Squeeze out air and seal. Using scissors, snip 1 corner from bag and pipe icing onto biscuits. Allow icing to set. Thread ribbon through holes. Enjoy!

Easter Bunny Cupcakes Ingredients • Makes 12 340g packet golden buttercake mix 2 x 30g chocolate flake bars, roughly crushed 3/4 cup shredded coconut 24 strawberries and cream lollies 24 blue mini M&Ms 12 red mini M&Ms 12 white mini marshmallows, halved crossways 24 white tic tacs rich chocolate writing fudge Buttercream icing 150g butter, softened 2 cups icing sugar mixture, sifted 1 1/2 tablespoons milk 1 teaspoon vanilla essence Method 1. Preheat oven to 180°C/160°C fan-forced. Line a 12-hole, 1/3-cup capacity muffin pan with paper cases.

2. Make cake mixture following packet directions. Fold in crushed flake bars. Divide mixture evenly between cases. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until golden and a skewer inserted in 1 cake comes out clean. Stand in pan for 2 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack to cool.

3. Meanwhile, make Buttercream icing Using an electric mixer, beat butter until light and fluffy. Gradually add icing sugar mixture, milk and vanilla, beating until well combined. Reserve 1/4 cup icing.

Spread cupcakes with remaining icing. Sprinkle with coconut.

4. Trim 5mm from 1 short end of each strawberries and cream lolly.

Using the picture as a guide, use a little remaining icing to secure two strawberries and cream lollies into top of 1 cupcake to form ears. Press 2 blue mini M&Ms on to cake to form eyes. Press 1 red Lucy mini M&M onFrank to cake to& form a nose.Filippello Press 2 mini marshmallows belowShop nose to form cheeks and add 2 tic tacs for teeth.Road Use chocolate 8 2130 The Northern writing fudge to pipe dots in centre of eyes to form pupils. Set aside Luddenham for 10 minutes or until set.

Hot Cross Muffins Ingredients • Makes 12 135g dried cranberries 1 cup (150g) currants 2 1/2 cups (375g) self-raising flour 1/2 tsp bicarbonate of soda 2 tsp ground cinnamon 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg 2/3 cup (165ml) sunflower oil 1 cup (250ml) buttermilk 2 eggs 200g caster sugar, plus extra 2 tbs 80g icing sugar 1 tsp lemon juice Method 1. Preheat oven to 200°C. Grease a 12-hole muffin tray and line with paper cases.

2. Soak dried fruit in just enough boiling water to cover for 10 minutes.

Drain well, then pat dry with paper towel.

3. Sift the flour, soda and spices into a large bowl. In a separate bowl, whisk together the oil, buttermilk, eggs and sugar until combined.

Add to the dry ingredients and stir to combine. Gently stir in the fruit.

Divide the mixture among muffin cases, then bake for 20-25 minutes until lightly browned and a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Cool completely on a wire rack.

4. Meanwhile, place the extra 2 tbs sugar in a pan with 2 tbs water and simmer over low heat, stirring, until sugar dissolves. Brush the glaze over the muffins.

5. Sift icing sugar into a bowl. Add lemon juice and just enough hot water to make a thick, pipable icing. Use a piping bag or drizzle from a spoon to draw a cross on each muffin, then serve.

Mulgoa Public School Update MINI BUNNIES

Kids love miniatures, so why not make some Mini Bunnies!

This is a great rabbit craft and a fun Easter Bunny Craft for Easter!

A preschooler can do this craft, but keep in mind that the little parts may be hard for some to handle well!

Make a few of these and put them on a paper plate covered with green Easter grass and some Jelly Beans and you’ve got one cute Easter Decoration!

Here’s what you’ll need...

• Cotton balls • 3 Cotton Bud Tips • Small google eyes • Tiny piece of pink pipe cleaner, paper, or craft foam (for the nose) • glue • Kitchen scissors Here’s how you make them...

1. First prepare your bunny’s ears and feet. Cut 2 Cotton Bud Tips a little bit longer than the swab part, these will be the bunny ears. Cut the other Cotton Bud Tips to make 4 feet, cut them right where the swab part starts.

2. Put glue on the ends of the long Cotton Bud Tips and glue them in place on your cotton ball to make the bunny ears.

3. Glue your last 4 Cotton Bud Tips swabs onto the bottom of the cotton ball to make the bunny’s feet.

4. Glue on your eyes and a pink nose and you’re done!

Our dedicated teachers have already worked diligently to coordinate swimming carnivals and organise the school choir and dance groups.

The teachers have also undergone Anaphylaxis, Emergency Care and Asthma training to ensure the safety and care of our students.

We are also preparing to undergo professional learning in the new English curriculum, which will be implemented in 2014.

A successful Parent Information Evening was held to keep our parents up to date on school requirements, important information and events. I’m also pleased that we have many parents willing to give their time to support students by helping in classrooms. The staff really values their support.

Six students were selected to represent our school at the District Swimming Carnival, which will be held next Wednesday. The ‘Sports in Schools’ program has commenced so that our students can develop necessary gross motor skills and enjoy themselves at the same time.

We are constantly striving to make our children 21st Century learners. Already this year our hardworking Parents and Citizen’s Association has organised our “iPad Walkathon”.

Man Charged over Wallacia Shooting Police have charged a man in relation to a shooting in Wallacia on February 14. Around 2.40am (Thursday 14 February), police were called to William Street in Wallacia after a report shots had been fired. Police found a car on nearby James Street which had sustained several gunshots.

Nobody was injured.

A crime scene was established and two men, aged 32 and 22, were taken into custody at the scene. Police seized a firearm from a nearby property. The firearm and vehicle will be taken for forensic examination.

The 32-year-old man has been charged with discharge firearm with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and firearm offences. He has been refused bail and will appear at Penrith Local Court. The other man was released without charge at this stage.

Guinness World Record Attempt!

Dr Katrina Warren and Kelly Gill are holding their second Border Collie Fun Day at Castle Hill Showground, Dog Arena (Doran Drive, Castle Hill). It will be a family friendly event, inviting Border Collie owners to bring their dog’s for a social afternoon of Border Collie activities. They also expect a lot of spectators as people are welcome without a dog.

Dr Katrina and Kelly Gill are delighted to welcome Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital to our Border Collie Fun Day. Dr Camille Brandt will be our official vet on the day and will also be offering free veterinary checks and answering your Border Collie health questions.

Their inaugural event was held last year and was a huge success.

The highlight of the day was the group photo of as many dogs as possible without owners in the shot and this photo went viral.

This year, they have official approval to attempt a Guinness World Record for the ‘most number of dogs ever recorded in a professional photo shoot.’

They need more than 101 Border Collies to gain the World Record and it will involve the dogs being photographed by Professional photographer, Fiona Erskine.
