Call for action on drowning Macarthur MP Russell Matheson has called on the Macarthur community to be more vigilant around the water this summer. The latest Royal Life Saving National Drowning Report shows 315 people have drowned in the past 12 months. Mr Matheson met with former Australian swim champion Grant Hackett last week to support Royal Life Saving’s call for widespread community action to reduce the drowning toll. Mr Matheson said everyone could do more to be careful around the water and that more education about water safety was needed for children, parents and families in Macarthur. “Drowning deaths are now at their highest level since 2003 and have
jumped by 11 percent when compared to the 5 year average,” Mr Matheson said. “The report also shows that men are three and a half times more like-
ly to drown than women with men aged 18 to 34 being of the most concern.” Following the release of the Royal Life Saving National Drowning Report at Parliament House in Canberra last week Mr Matheson said Macarthur lo-
cals must be vigilant this summer to avoid becoming a statistic. “One life lost is one life too many. There are so many tragedies happening and so many families are being affected. I encourage locals to be careful around the water and I urge people to ensure their children have the strongest swimming skills possible,” Mr Matheson said. “The new report highlights that 36 per cent of all drowning deaths nationwide are now happening in a river, creek or stream. People often think drowning tends to happen more often at beaches, when the reality is inland waterways claim many more lives.” Mr Matheson said the report is a sobering reminder for all Australians that drowning continues to be a significant problem that the whole community needs to be concerned about.
