Sydney’s Only Picnic Races Are Back!

Issue 174

PAWS A WHILE pg.16

Following on from last year’s inaugural event, Fernhill Estate in conjunction with Hawkesbury Race Club, is once again bringing country racing to Sydney. The Fernhill Picnic Race Day will be held on Saturday 18 October and promises to be an unforgettable event. Penrith City Council have granted Fernhill a five (5) year approval for the day. You’re invited to celebrate this unique and exciting day, while soaking up the serenity of the magnificent estate. This year’s date change sees the event coinciding with Caulfield Cup Day and City Tattersalls Club Cup Day at Royal Randwick. The organisers only see this as a positive. “It’s such a great time of year, the weather hopefully won’t be as hot as last year and everyone is really getting into the swing of the Spring Racing Carnival,” said the event’s Project Manager, Tai Ryan. “Western Sydney doesn’t usually have easy access to the grandeur of a big race day but patrons will be able to experience all the action here at Fernhill.” continued...Pg.9.

FROM THE EDITOR

Hello Spring! Welcome to the September edition of your community news. I know I have enjoyed the brief appearances of sunshine, amidst the rain that we also need so desperately. Like me, many readers who have been struck down with hard to shake dreaded winter illnesses will be welcoming Spring with open arms! Here at the District Gazette we’re certainly kicking the season off to a flying start, with the news of the Fernhill Picnic races on our front page, followed by the glitzy grand opening of the third salon for Admire Beaute, now at Luddenham (see page 3 for all the details). This month we also feature 50 years of Spring in the Blue Mountains with the ‘Leura Gardens Festival’. This year’s festival takes place in October, read all about it on page 7. Our resident parenting expert, Narelle, talks to us about guiding and educating our children while teaching new skills and behaviours on page 10. Next month, we’re getting right into the spirit of Spring, with our COLOUR Wedding Spectacular. If you, or someone you know is planning a wedding, this will be one edition NOT to miss! Meanwhile, we have plenty of stories and events for you to catch up on, so, sit-back, grab a cuppa and enjoy your community news! The best feeling of happiness, is when you’re happy because you’ve made someone else happy.

FAITH – ANGLICAN PARISH of MULGOA Minister Matt Olliffe P: 4774 0422 M: 0401 958 161 Sunday Service times: 8:30am & 6.45pm St Thomas’ Mulgoa. 10:30am St Paul’s Warragamba

Give Us Peace In Our Time, O Lord … and a Steadfast Faith Few of us in Australia know war first hand. We are extremely thankful for the relative peace and good order we enjoy. God has blessed us with this for many decades. We are commanded to obey and pray for our governments and for peace. Peace means that the good news of Jesus Christ, the forgiveness of sins Jesus brings through his death and resurrection, and the promise of eternal life to all believers, might spread and abound, and bring God’s joy and peace to our fellow citizens (Romans 13:1-10; 1 Timothy 2:1-8; 1 Peter 2:13-17). Jesus himself is Prince of Peace, and Our Peace, who brings us peace with God (Isaiah 9:6; Ephesians 2:14; Romans 5:1-2). It is not this way everywhere in our world. In Iraq and Syria, Islamic State militants are forcing conversions to Islam, and crucifying, beheading, shooting or expelling those who don’t do so. They have emptied the city of Mosul of all Christians. Sadly, a small number of these militants are Australians. In Nigeria, Boko Haram, another Islamist group, still holds over 200 girls that they have kidnapped, and again are using terror to force conversion to Islam. They may be using the girls as suicide bombers (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2713322/ Fears-schoolgirls-kidnapped-Boko-Haram-used-suicidebombers-ten-year-old-girl-wearing-explosives-rescued-police. html). Recently, Prime Minister Abbott and Immigration Minister Morrison have announced that 4000 places will be made available for Iraqi Christians and Yazidis. I thank them and God for it, and urge the Federal government to do more for those fleeing Islamist extremists. Please write to your local Federal MP to thank them and urge them to do more. The reason many Iraqi citizens lost their lives, homes, and possessions is that they refused to give up their allegiance to the Lord Jesus Christ as Creator, Saviour, Redeemer, and God. Does your allegiance to Jesus Christ extend that far? In the 2011 census, 61% of the Australian population self-reported as Christian of some sort. If you were one of them, let me remind you of two messages Jesus Christ, after whom your religion is named, has for you. The first is a word of comfort. Jesus said: “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. And you know the way to where I am going.” Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. (John 14:1-6 ESV) This is good news. Nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 8:28-38). We need never fear death now, because Jesus promised us resurrection and eternal life. The worst that can happen is pain and death, and God promises to wipe all that away in the new creation he is bringing. So Christ tells us that now we are to love our enemies and do good to those who hate us (Luke 6:27). That is the sort of love with which Jesus loved us. This message makes my heart sing. I hope it does yours too.

4

September 2014 www.mulgoagazette.com.au

The second message, however, is a message of challenge to our half-heartedness and cowardice. Indeed, the hour is coming when whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God. (John 16:2 ESV) If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. (Luke 9:23-24 ESV) For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels. (Mark 8:38 ESV) I pray that we never see the sort of sectarian violence in Australia that we have seen in the Middle East recently. Yet, if you confess yourself a Christian, you and I must never move from the hope held out from us in Jesus Christ our Lord. There is only one name – the name of Jesus Christ – which is the only saving name under given to men and women by which we must be saved (Acts 4:12). So if such horrible things as happen elsewhere happen here, we must NEVER give up our precious faith in Jesus Christ. Matt Olliffe, Minister, Anglican Parish of Mulgoa

Mulgoa Senior School Leadership Forum Visit NSW Parliament House Tanya Davies MP, State Member for Mulgoa, was thrilled by the success of the Mulgoa Senior School Leadership Forum last month. 19 students from local high schools attended the Leadership Forum at NSW Parliament House in August, and had the opportunity to discuss leadership with The Hon Shelley Hancock MP, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly and The Hon Anthony Roberts MP, Minister for Resources and Energy. The forum is an annual event initiated by Tanya Davies to inspire senior school students to think more broadly about leadership in our community. “It is also an opportunity for me to recognize the hard work that school captains and leaders give to their school communities Tanya Davies said. The students from Penrith Anglican College, Caroline Chisholm College, St Clair High School, Colyton High School Trade School, Nepean Christian School and Glenmore Park High School were acknowledged by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. The students then watched question time in the Legislative Assembly Chamber and got to see the Premier and government Ministers in action. Tanya Davies was impressed by the students' ideas and questions that were shared. "The students were great representatives of the talent in Mulgoa and they asked some interesting questions of the Members of Parliament" Tanya Davies said. “It was a fantastic day, I gained a lot of information and knowledge from the various speakers. It’s opened my eyes to the roles of our politicians in parliament. said Miss Brittany Reeves of Penrith Anglican College. “From what I’ve seen today, I now want to run for School

"I believe in our young people and their aspirations for themselves and their wider school and local communities" said Tanya Davies. "It is important that our young leaders have an insight into how their government functions. This experience may have opened their eyes to wider possibilities for their own futures. I hope that the Forum challenged our young leaders to be confident, courageous, passionate and disciplined leaders to continue to make a difference in their communities" said Tanya Davies.

FAITH – WARRAGAMBA BAPTIST CHURCH Lyndon Rumsey P: 4774 1476 W: www.warragambabaptist.net Sunday Service: 9.30 am

I certainly have enjoyed watching the Commonwealth Games, seeing young men and women strive to achieve success, both in the pool, the track or in the stadium. There is something very compelling about watching athletes strive for success in their chosen sport. For some, their efforts will be rewarded with success and the prized trophy, but for others their efforts will end in disappointment. I am reminded of Paul’s words to the church in Corinth: “Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.” Each of us is called to live our lives like athletes, striving to obtain that crown which lasts forever, eternity with the living God. For some the starting blocks beckon, you want to join the race but you are unsure how to start. The starting point is where you seek forgiveness and ask Jesus to be the Lord of your life. You can do this on your own of course, but a better way is to talk to someone, I would like to help you to make this important first step. It will be the best decision you have ever made. For others you are further down the track, but you have lost sight of the finish line, you are starting to doubt your ability to run the race before you. Increase your training, spend more time talking to God through prayer, obtain life’s answers in God’s Word and seek Godly counsel from others running the same race. Perhaps too, you are disillusioned with church, I want to encourage to give church another chance, the prize is too valuable to not try again. Friends, let me encourage each of you as the writer of Hebrews says: “Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfector of our faith.” God bless, Lyndon Rumsey (Ph: 0417174455)

The Tragedy of Suicide Contrary to what many believe, your life can appear perfect and you can still be depressed. Last month we mourned the death of Robin Williams, a man who struggled with the massive burden of depression so deeply that he simply could not find a way out, and took his own life. While the world loved and saw a man full of talent and life, an actor whose work brought joy and tears and inspiration and understanding, he had a pain that was unbearable and unexplainable. You can be wealthy and still struggle with what Winston Churchill famously termed his “black dog”. You can have fame and fortune and love and admiration, and take your life. Robin Williams did. To the healthy, suicide makes no sense. To those on the outside of the intense pain and emptiness, the idea of ending one’s own life is horrific. This is as it should be. But to those who have experienced that darkness and the feeling of unending despair, suicide can appear like the only way out of the pain. Depression is a terrible illness that shows up in many ways. Some struggle with it their entire life, and for others depression manifests itself after a massive life change or trauma. Depression can be brought on by pregnancy or medical conditions. We who sit and wonder at the reason behind a death by suicide will never be satisfied, because we will never fully understand. That is why we need to be gentle with one another, as we don’t really know the burdens that those we encounter in our daily life are carrying. Lifeline 24 Hr Counselling Service – 13 11 14

Sydney’s Only Picnic Races Are Back! Prior to last year’s picnic race day, the discreet 2,400m racetrack had previously been maintained for private use. However when Fernhill’s new owners Brenda and Simon Tripp approached Racing NSW with the race meeting proposition, Peter V’Landys saw merit in the event, and granted Fernhill a six year approval, under the auspices of Hawkesbury’s race club licence. The prize money levels, all put forward by Fernhill directly, are the highest for any picnic race meeting in Australia. To visit Fernhill Estate and take in its 200-year history is genuinely breathtaking. It’s sloping green hills and ancient trees make it the perfect place for relaxation while its stables and track have led to it being a working enterprise in the equestrian world. Centre to the Fernhill experience is the heritage listed sandstone mansion, built from sandstone quarried on the property by convicts and constructed by 20 Irish stonemasons brought out under the ‘bounty system’ of immigration. “Last year’s Picnics was amazingly successful for an inaugural event,” said Mrs Brenda Tripp, Fernhill Estate Owner and CEO. “There were a few operational issues as you’d expect, but the great thing is they will be rectifiable for this year. There will be more shade and easier car park access to ensure everyone has the most enjoyable day.” The day will be compered by TV personality Ben Damon and 2GB’s Ray Hadley has again come on board to commentate the six race program, including the feature event, the $15,000

Fernhill Cup which was taken out by the Goulburn-trained Bush Brandy (Graeme Spackman) and jockey Tim Phillips in 2013. But the action doesn’t stop on the track. Female fashion will be a drawcard via the Luv My Bag Fashions on the Field competition, children will be thoroughly entertained with a range of activities in the Outback Steakhouse Family Zone, whilst the Food Fare will offer local and international cuisine to tickle the tastebuds. Live music including the popular postrace concert will again feature, plus one lucky patron will win a holiday to Hamilton Island! Picnics Ambassadors, NRL great Trent Barrett and The Voice finalist Brittanie Shipway, will also be trackside mingling and entertaining the crowd. The punters haven’t been forgotten either with tote and bookmaker betting facilities available and all the action from Caulfield Cup Day live on the big screen. Tickets go on sale from 9am on Monday 1st September. General admission tickets are $30 pre-purchased or $40 on the day. Children under 14 years are free. Alternatively upgrade and book into one of the fine hospitality options available. There is onsite parking or connecting shuttle bus services from local areas. Gates open: 10.00am First race: approximately 1.10pm Post race concert: approximately 5.30pm Book at www. fernhillpicnics.com.au

PARENTS CORNER Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) NepeanStudent-Wellbeing Worker – Mulgoa Public School Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services Ph: 0409 986 121 Centre: 4721 8520 Blog: http://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com

Parents who come to my groups hear me say quite often… “What is the most POSITIVE thing I can do, to GUIDE and EDUCATE my child, to teach him/her new SKILLS and BEHAVIOURS, and maintain the RELATIONSHIP?” It’s a prompt that I wrote for parents to guide them in growing up their children. Recently, in one of the groups, a parent asked… “What can I do about a child interrupting whilst I’m speaking to someone? He does it all of the time.” Why do children interrupt? Because what they have to say is the most important thing to them at this point in time. Children are egocentric, they do believe that whole world revolves around them. They are not deliberately being selfish, it’s part of their brain development, and if you think about it it’s a survival tactic. They get excited about what they want to say. They want to say it quickly because if they don’t say it right now they might forget and everyone will miss out on hearing their wisdom. It’s not because they are rude or stupid. Why do we have to constantly remind our kids about some of our rules and values? Because they are kids. Because when they get excited, they forget about the rules and social niceties. Because their logical and rational brain is not fully developed. Dr Becky Bailey, a clinical psychologist in the USA says that we have to remind our kids of the rules up to 2,000 times, for each rule. That’s a lot of reminding, but that’s part of the job of being a parent. So, let’s break down our problem with the child interrupting using the above prompt… Most positive thing? Being kind, caring, and supportive. Guide and educate? Give the child a hand signal to stop. Relationship? Look the child in the eye to let him know you’ve heard him. Draw him in close for a side hug, or softly touch his shoulder. New skills and behaviours? At the first available moment, acknowledge his excitement and gently remind the child that he interrupted and remind him of what to do instead. Say, “Hey I know you are keen to tell me something, but you interrupted the conversation between Dad and I, next time please say ‘excuse me’ “. Now, in this instance the young fella has ADHD, which means he has trouble with hyperactivity, impulse control, memory, organisation, and focus. And a lot of kids with ADHD also have anxiety. So we added the additional strategy of teaching him to write down on his white board what he needs to tell Mum so he doesn’t get anxious about forgetting it. Of course, if it’s an emergency, like the stove has caught fire or the baby has climbed onto the change table and is about to nose dive off it, then we don’t mind our kids interrupting us. Do we? That’s a whole lot better than calling our kids ‘rude’ (a putdown), screaming at them for interrupting, and telling them to go away. What do they learn when this approach is used? How does it make them feel? How likely are they to want to come and tell you something if this is the reaction they always get? If you have a child with ADHD or ADD you may like to come along to a support group that has recently been established in the Penrith area. The group meets on the third Monday of the month at 7:30pm at South Penrith Neighbourhood Centre. All welcome.

Honey and Chai Festival

27th September 2014 Celebrating Spring and the New Honey Season

What’s the Key Health Secret for Spring? CONGRATULATIONS!! You’ve made it through winter and have come out the other side! Since most of us get through the cold in just survival mode - doing whatever it takes to stay warm and comfortable - often we can emerge from it’s depths... let’s just say… a little ‘heavier’ for the experience. Our mood and motivation may have dipped, whilst our inactivity and comfort eating may have swung to new heights! Well, if this is sounding all too familiar… rest assured you’re not alone… and there is good news! SPRING IS HERE! And its offer to you is renewal and fresh hope. It’s your body’s natural time for cleansing, detoxification and healing… new beginnings really! Losing the weight and feeling energised again can be easier than you think! Your cells are actually just screaming out for food! Fresh, nutritious food! It’s that simple. So my number 1 tip would be to kick-start your metabolism NOW with dark leafy greens. Kale! Rocket! Spinach! These super foods are now in season and great in salads. Dressed up with a squeeze of lemon and olive oil they will delight your taste buds and waist line! Enjoy!

Local Nightlife Under Spotlight Nature enthusiasts of all ages are invited to take part in a great nocturnal school holiday activity. Penrith City Council, along with the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS), will be holding Night Nature Walks at Agnes Banks Nature Reserve and Mulgoa Nature Reserve in the September/October school holidays. Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said the night walks, led by ranger guides, would foster an appreciation of what local nature reserves have to offer. “The local NPWS ranger and a council biodiversity officer will show participants how to spot nocturnal animals living in the local area,” Cr Fowler said. “They will go in search of housing for these creatures and learn how they survive in the bush.” The Night Nature Walks are recommended for children six to 12 years of age, with their families. All children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. The walks will be approximately 1.5km return, on easygraded tracks. Spotlights and a light supper of hot chocolate, marshmallows and biscuits will be provided, but participants are required to bring their own torch. The Night Nature Walks will be held at Agnes Banks Nature Reserve on Wednesday 24 September and Mulgoa Nature Reserve on Wednesday 1 October, between 7pm and 9pm. Places are limited and registration is essential. Telephone 4732 8055 to book a place, or for more information go to penrithcity.nsw.gov.au.

Warragamba Dump Point Ready for Use Wollondilly Shire Council in conjunction with Council’s Economic Development Advisory Group and Campervan and Motorhome Club of Australia are currently installing three recreational vehicle dump points within its boundaries to encourage caravan users to visit Wollondilly and stay a while. Self-contained tourism is on the increase and as such, we encourage the disposal of black and grey water and hard waste (rubbish) in a responsible manner. The dump point stations will provide the appropriate facilities for black and grey water disposal and discourage indiscriminate waste disposal and the ensuing environmental problems. “We want to give self-contained travellers the opportunity to stay in Wollondilly and see our beautiful scenery and experience our country hospitality. The dump points have been strategically placed in Appin, Warragamba and Picton close to townships, entry and exit roads,” says Mayor, Cr Benn Banasik. The Warragamba dump point is now open for use and is situated at Warragamba Picnic Area, Warradale Road, Warragamba. The first completed dump point is situated in Appin Park, Appin and has been open since April. The Picton dump point is in the planning stages and the location for this p will be released once the installation is complete.

What to do During a Period of Interest Rate Stability We have now had over 12 months without a change in the official cash rate by the RBA, creating what’s known as a period of interest rate stability. And with unemployment figures coming out last month at higher than expected levels, there certainly doesn’t appear to be any prospect of an interest rate increase in the near term. This has been further reinforced with all major banks now dropping their 5-year fixed rate home loans to under 5% - levels that have never been seen before. A number of second tier lenders have also followed this trend. So what could you be doing during this period of interest rate stability? • Use any surplus cash to reduce any non-home debts with higher interest rates, such as credit cards, personal loans and car loans. • Take the opportunity to make additional repayments onto your home loan – reducing interest costs now and also in the future when rates are higher; • Accessing equity to complete home improvements or renovations; • Use equity to purchase other investments such as property, shares and managed funds; • Build the pool you’ve been wanting or go on the family holiday you have been planning. While the current economic climate allows for some certainty, it’s important to note that things can change and sometimes they change quickly. It’s critical to take into account the potential for future increases in interest rates when making plans for the future.

Knowledge Jobs a Step Closer Council has welcomed the Department of Planning and Environment’s green light to move to the formal process of public consultation for the Sydney Science Park proposal at Luddenham. The proposal is a 280 hectare master planned centre for research, development and education in the food security, energy and health sectors. “These are exciting times. We’re on the threshold of a New West, one that has good roads, good jobs and support for the people who choose to live in one of the fastest growing regions in Australia,” said Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler OAM. “Baiada has committed to develop its own food and research laboratories and headquarters to kick off the Sydney Science Park. This commitment will create an initial 200 jobs on the site by 2016. Ultimately the Park will have the capacity for 12,200 jobs and 10,000 students,” Cr Fowler said. Cr Fowler said the Science Park would attract the world’s leading scientific professionals and organisations to Western Sydney, and alongside the major infrastructure commitments recently announced by the Federal and State governments, would be a catalyst for high quality development in the Broader Western Sydney Employment Area. “Increasing jobs, particularly high-end knowledge jobs in the City is a high priority for Council,” Cr Fowler said.

RSPCA Cupcake Day Was a Huge Success

Pupcake Recipe

A Cupcake Day is a great way to raise awareness and money for the RSPCA. We hosted a Cupcake Day at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital on Monday 18th August 2014. Thank you to everyone who came in and donated and ate a cupcake or two. Also a huge thank you for the online donations. We raised $700.00 for the RSPCA with your help. Sheridan, Rachel, Stacey, Carly, Eden, Lizzie and Renai cooked up a storm and provided the most delicious peppermint slice, Mars Bar and Malteser slice, and cupcakes. The Pupcakes were made from the Hills WD science diet baked into cupcakes and iced with peanut butter. Pony, Bella and Callie loved eating the Pupcakes! Thanks again for supporting a great cause! The RSPCA is the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, a non-profit, community based charity that works to prevent cruelty to animals by actively promoting their care and protection. The RSPCA is not an agency of the Australian Government and therefore relies on the generosity of the community – through animal adoptions, volunteering, event participation, donations, fundraising, corporate partnerships, corporate support, bequests and grants – to support its vital daily work. We wish every day was cupcake day!

Animals should not eat cupcakes unless they are specially made with safe, animal friendly ingredients. Chocolate is especially toxic to many animals! Remember, Pupcakes are special treats and shouldn’t be fed to your dog regularly! This recipe makes around 12-14 Pupcakes. Ingredients 2 ž cups water Âź cup unsweetened apple sauce Âź cup oats 4 cups wholemeal flour 1 cup fresh diced apple 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 cage free egg, beaten slightly 4 tablespoons honey Method Preheat oven to 175 degrees Celsius. Spray muffin tins with cooking oil. Mix all wet ingredients thoroughly. Combine dry ingredients in a separate bowl. Add wet ingredients to dry ingredients slowly and mix well. Pour into muffin tins and bake for 25-30 minutes. Once the Pupcakes have cooled, you can ice the Pupcakes with smooth peanut butter. Please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. Call 4736 2027 to make an appointment. Check us out on Facebook and online at www. orchardhillsvet.com.au.
