Kid’s Yoga Comes to Wallacia Did you know that yoga is not just for adults? That’s right, there are now yoga classes for kids! According to local yoga instructor, Shannon Herps of Little Lotus Studio, the popularity of kid’s yoga is on the rise, with children as young as 5 now attending the health and wellbeing classes. Kid’s yoga classes are now available at Wallacia Progress Hall (corner of Greendale Road and Roma Avenue) on Wednesdays during school terms. They start at 5:00pm and finish at 5:45pm and have a class of up to 12 children aged between 5 and 12 (primary school ages). “With kid’s yoga, it’s important to keep the children engaged. Each week has a different focus, with themes covered including coping with emotions, resilience, compassion, and gratitude, as well as lighthearted topics such as a trip to the beach, going camping and other imaginative adventures. In our classes, we play games, move our bodies through yoga poses, read books and at the end of every class, relax” explained Shannon. There are many benefits of yoga for kids. Children are guided through movement, breath and games designed to help them understand their bodies, manage their emotions and to give them invaluable tools for dealing with circumstances in life. “Kid’s yoga works the whole body, calms the mind, teaches stillness, stretches and strengthens the muscles and makes you feel good!” added Shannon. Having also been a high school teacher for over 17 years, Shannon noticed an increase in anxiety and mental health concerns in teenagers over the years. “I found yoga when my youngest child was a baby and loved the way yoga made me feel, connected to my body and aware of my breath and my overall emotions and wellbeing. This led me to pursue qualifications in teaching kid’s yoga, so I could incorporate practices into my classroom and home with my own children. I love learning and decided to continue down this pathway. I enjoy sharing my passion and hopefully making differences in young people’s lives through yoga” reflected Shannon. For more information about kid’s yoga, email shannon@littlelotusstudio.com.au or visit www.facebook.com/littlelotusstudioemuplains.

Loving Others Through Our Work “Greed… is good.” So goes the line spoken by the character Gordon Gekko in the 1987 film, Wall Street. It is easy to think that having a job and working is about self-interest. It might even be greed that drives you! However, there is another way to think about your work. At the heart of a job is doing something that is both valuable to you and to someone else. Usually it is the money that is valuable to you and your labour or a product that is valuable to the other person. It means that at the heart of our economy are freely entered into mutually beneficial exchanges. We are not slaves. Even someone really rich can’t force you to do anything. You are free to work out what benefits you. On the flip-side, nobody is forced to employ you, nor forced to buy your goods and services. If the exchanges we make are truly doing good for the other person, then it is an easy step to say that at the heart of the economy are actions that are loving to others. It feels a bit crazy, but as you do something good for another person you are loving them. Digging a hole, building a house, fixing a car, delivering groceries, helping people with their tax are all things that love others. The money you earn doesn’t have to be motivated by greed. You can love others with that as well! When you earn money it means you aren’t dependent on others for your daily needs and have the opportunity to be generous and do other good (loving) things with it. The hard thing at the moment is the dislocation in our economy with forced shutdowns and people’s behaviour changing so radically. It means people will be wanting to work but can’t find suitable work. It means we might wish we could be working but are dependent on others (frequently in the form of government payments). We need to avoid being lazy, instead being patient and creative as we work out how to wake up each day and do something good for others in the world God has made and continues to love.

Fears of Dog Fighting Rings Operating in Sydney’s West
Following an abused and abandoned dog being found on the side of the road in Silverdale recently, there have been growing community concerns over underground dog fighting rings operating in Sydney’s West. After being approached by concerned residents, and with fears growing that this horrific incident could be part of a larger problem, Animal Justice Party MP Emma Hurst is calling on community members to anonymously report information on dog fighting to Crime Stoppers. “A female dog in Silverdale was found severely injured and dying on the side of the road, with her mouth taped shut. She had no microchip or collar making it very difficult for the police and RSPCA to identify her and they are calling on the community for information and support” said Ms Hurst. “There is a real chance she was the victim of a local underground dog fighting ring, and we have heard rumours there may be several in the area. “We have approached both the NSW Police and Animal Welfare League on this issue, and they have reported hearing similar rumours of illegal dog fighting. “Dog fighting in NSW is an extremely serious issue. Dogs are often starved, tortured, beaten and abused to make them highly aggressive. They are then pitted against each other in a brutal fight to the death. “Once the fight is over, dogs can be shot, drowned, beaten to death, or left to die on the side of the road - this is what is suspected to have happened in the recent animal abuse case arising out of Silverdale. “People with information often don’t come forward from fear of retaliation of abuse. We encourage anyone with further information to call Crime Stoppers where complaints can be made confidentially. “The Animal Justice Party are calling on the relevant authorities to initiate an immediate investigation on suspected underground dog fighting rings in Sydney’s West” said Ms Hurst. r

CSIRO Plans to Call the Aerotropolis Home
STEINS PLUMBING SOLUTIONS PLUMBING | DRAINAGE | GASFITTING | ROOFING
YOUR LOCAL PLUMBER SERVICES OFFERED The CSIRO will have up to 450 of the science agency’s staff and researchers based at a new state of the art facility in the heart of the Western Sydney Aerotropolis. Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the current CSIRO plan is to relocate many of its Sydney-based staff into a purpose-built facility that would support collaboration and the delivery of cutting-edge science. “The Aerotropolis will be a new focal point for Australian innovation, research and productivity, which is why it is the perfect home for Australia’s national science agency” Ms Berejiklian said. “CSIRO is a national icon and would set the tone for the Aerotropolis as an innovation hub which will drive the creation of more than 200,000 jobs across the Western Parkland City”. Minister for Jobs, Investment, Tourism and Western Sydney Stuart Ayres said the successful conclusion of negotiations will pave the way for construction on CSIRO’s facility in the Aerotropolis Core to start in mid-2023 and be complete by 2026. “The addition of CSIRO to the Aerotropolis would confirm the precinct as the future epicentre for science, research, innovation and industry collaboration in the Asia-Pacific” Mr Ayres said. CSIRO Chief Executive Dr Larry Marshall said the agency’s presence at Aerotropolis would support collaboration and put science and technology right at the heart of this new smart and liveable city. “The more we can put science in the hands of real people to solve real problems, the better our future will be, so the collaboration and connectedness of the Western Sydney Aerotropolis is an immense opportunity for CSIRO and the future we are shaping for Australia” Dr Marshall said. “The Aerotropolis reflects the new generation of CSIRO, agile and diverse, while building on a great 100-year legacy of innovation through collaboration. Sydney is where CSIRO invented fast WiFi and where we will invent the next innovations for our future prosperity and sustainability”. The plan is for a CSIRO facility of up to 18,000m2 with collaborative workshops and meeting spaces alongside stateof-the-art facilities and laboratories. The proposed CSIRO facility will benefit from the $11 billion Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport rail which will service the greater Western Sydney region, in time for the opening of Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport in 2026. r Feature Article: [Cover] An artist’s impression of the CSIRO facility [Above] Western Sydney will soon be the epicentre for science, research, innovation, and industry | Images Supplied

Got a fussy eater?
The very best way to deal with eating difficulties is not to stress about it. Look at the positive. Rather than focusing on what he doesn’t eat, focus on what he does eat, and expand his range and variety ever so slowly. Look upon it in the spirit of adventure rather than with fear and dread. The mirror neurons in your child’s brain will pick up on your attitude and feelings. If you have anxiety about mealtimes, your child will smell the fear and respond accordingly. If he gets a lot of attention for his fussy eating, he will do more of it. One strategy is the back-up meal (Dr Thomas Phelan). You give your child tiny portions of the family meal. A teaspoon of everything, separated from each other on a small plate. The child must try what was on the plate. He can eat what he wants and leave what he wants, but he must give it a bit of a go. If he likes some of it, he can have more. Give descriptive praise for what he tries and eats. When he has had enough of that meal, if he is still hungry, he can ask for his back-up meal. The criteria for the back-up meal is that it is quick and simple to prepare, and somewhat nutritious. It could be as simple as a peanut butter sandwich or tinned spaghetti on toast. You don’t give descriptive praise if the child eats the back-up meal. This strategy can take a long while. Most of parenting is slow and consistent. When I tell people about the above strategy, they are concerned about the child “winning”. I advise parents to never start a war with their child over food – you will not win. The back-up meal is a positive way to increase your child’s tolerance for different tastes. If you would like more information, look up the Fussy Eating Resources on the Cancer Council NSW website. Also look up Dr Ellyn Satter’s ‘division of responsibility’ model. r

Latest @ Luddenham by Wayne Willmington
Luddenham is finally getting a Museum. It will be built at the Luddenham Showground and is aiming to tell the story of Luddenham with its heritage, from timber cutting to the different types of farming over the years. If you have any items that relate to Luddenham’s history, we would love to hear from you. During August, Luddenham’s future should be revealed. The Western Sydney Planning Partnership have been very busy working on the Western Sydney Aerotropolis Precinct Planning and that includes the area around Luddenham. Future planning and zoning are of huge interest to locals. I was on hand for the recent re-opening of the Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport Experience Centre. Situated on Eaton Road, Luddenham on the site of Sydney’s new airport. Designed in conjunction with the local landscape, the centre will guide you through an exhibition space before opening to a viewing area, where you will be able to see airport construction underway. At the moment, the Experience Centre will be open from Monday to Thursday, 10am to 4pm excluding public holidays with free entry and numbers may be limited due to COVID 19 restrictions. Visitors are asked to follow the instructions of the staff, practice social distancing and do not attend if you are feeling unwell. Changes have been made to make the Centre COVID Safe.
There is some excess land on the south of Luddenham, in between Eaton Road and the new Northern Road. Some of the land was the old Northern Road, as well as some of the land that was acquired for the Airport site. Now with the road works getting close to being finished, there is a push for this area to be made into a Memorial Park to remember locals that went to War. Lots are happening on the local front, with the recent weekend closures of Elizabeth Drive and Northern Road as well as other temporary closures. During August, we are expecting the opening of the other carriage way of the Northern Road around the Airport and the reopening of Adams Road. Changes to the Northern Road – Elizabeth Drive intersection will see the turning on of the traffic lights and traffic be diverted on some of the new section of the Northern Road, on the way to Penrith. During the recent school holidays, a Winter Fair was held at the Showground with rides and entertainment for the kids. The first Luddenham Country Markets were held in July and were a huge success (formally Mulgoa Markets). I can now confirm that the Luddenham Country Markets will be held fortnightly on Sundays at the Luddenham Showground, kicking off on the 2nd of August between 10am and 2pm. Luddenham Showground’s new multipurpose shed is almost complete. A massive concrete slab has been laid and Tanya Davies MP visited to inspect this. Tanya organised a grant to build the new infrastructure. If you have an opinion on what Luddenham of the future should be like, please email your thoughts or views to willmingtons@bigpond.com. r Re-opening Airport Experience Centre | Image Supplied
Designing Your Building Project
Home Design Choices
Gone are the days that first home buyers, like myself, had to be content with a 10 square 3-bedroom new brick-veneer home on an 850 square metre piece of land with a one-car carport (land and home was a total of $ 13,500 in the early 1970s). It is most important to include and involve your partner in the design and function of your new home. 85% of domestic chores are done by the lady of the home. Remember the adage ‘happy wife – happy life’. In all my years of designing new homes, it is only when the female partner is not involved in the design that it spoke volumes in the final outcome of the home. Needless to say, the total design had no character, style or warmth, with the guys described as a “control freaks”. This is the first part of a series of design advice blogs. I hope you will find these helpful and I look forward to your comments. Some future topics include: • Building orientation • Style of your new home (contemporary, colonial, federation, modern, art deco, etc.) • Eco/environmentally friendly designed home (save on power and water bills) • Your wish lists. Put everything in and you can choose what to eliminate more easily than you can add after you start • Building materials for the new home (concrete or timber floors, etc.) • Consider negatives of the building site (bushfire rating) • Consider positives of the building site (close to public transport, location) • Future constructions (pool, tennis court, separate garage, storeroom, pool pavilion, granny flat, dual occupation, etc.) • Sewer, septic tanks, enviro-cycle/econo-cycle type tanks, pump out tanks, pit and trench systems, extra water tanks and drainage offset • Access to the construction site • Price of construction per square metre • Price of architectural and structural engineering design process • And many more!

PAWS A WHILE
Article Written + Submitted by: Camille Brandt from Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital A: 49 Wentworth Rd, Orchard Hills P: 4736 2027
Puppy Preschool We will be restarting Puppy Preschool in August 2020. We had cancelled puppy preschool due to the Coronavirus crisis. Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital's Puppy Preschool Course offers new puppy owners upto-date information on training and behaviour, with a focus on using positive reinforcement and force-free methods of training. This means you can not only train your dog to be the best companion, but do so in a way that makes it enjoyable for both you and them!! Why use positive reinforcement methods? Positive reinforcement involves rewarding your dog for good behaviour, so that it is more likely to occur again. It is the most humane method of training, and has also been scientifically proven to be the most effective. Using these methods will also strengthen the bond between you and your dog. Dogs are social animals, and want nothing more than to be a part of the family. Starting their training from an early age will help to make sure that they are the company that every family member wants! Puppies aged between the ages of 8-14 weeks with a minimum of one vaccination can be enrolled. The course duration is 5 weeks and spots are limited, so please call us on (02) 4736 2027 to find out more. For more information check out our Facebook, website www.orchardhillsvet.com.au or call 02 4736 2027. r

Dynamic Loading - The Secret to Fighting Osteoporosis and Building New Bone Epidemiological data shows that there are 200 million osteoporosis cases worldwide, including 1.2 million Australians, 210.2 million Americans, and 15 million European men and women over 50. Of Australian men over 50, 28,5000 will be osteoporotic and 2.48 million osteopenic by 2022. A person’s bones adapt to regular mechanical ‘loading’. Animal research shows bone production is determined by the magnitude, and the rate and frequency of loading. Evidence shows dynamic loading makes more bone than static loading. The optimal exercise prescription for prevention and management of osteopenia and osteoporosis is regular application of dynamic, high magnitude loads to bones at a rapid rate. What does this mean? Dynamic refers to the requirement that the exercise requires motion. Standing will put a static load on leg bones and running provides dynamic load. High magnitude means forces experienced by bones during exercise must be relatively high – e.g. forces on leg and hip bones through jumping 30cm into the air and landing with two feet on a hard floor. Applied at a rapid rate means you might complete 5-6 30cm jumps and landings in quick succession. Combining high intensity resistance training with high impact jumping elicits high strain and strain rates on bone. Theoretically, this is an optimal exercise protocol for bone strength.
Australian researchers put women aged 61-71 years on either a low load home-based exercise program or a supervised high intensity high impact program (called HiPRT). Participants had lumbar spine T-scores of -2.15 ± 0.72 i.e. osteopenic or osteoporotic lumbar bone densities. Both programs involved 2 x 30min exercise sessions weekly on non-consecutive days, over 8 months. Bone density and strength effects were compared: HiPRT Program 1. overhead press 2. deadlifts 3. squats 4. jumping chin ups with drop landings Low Load Program 1. 10-min walking warm-up, 2. 4 stretches, 3. 4 low resistance lunges, calf raises, standing forward raises 4. 5-min warm down walk There were no reported injuries in either group. Researchers found HiPRT women became faster, fitter, stronger and amazingly GAINED femur and lumbar bone density and increased their overall height. Low load program women became slower, less fit, shorter, and lost bone density. Can the contrast be any starker, or the message be any clearer?

OK August... be kind! July brought with it a degree of uncertainty as we continue on through this COVID chapter of our ‘new look’ lives. Many have commented that we have taken two steps forward and four steps backward. It’s more important than ever to observe, learn and follow the rules. Keep your distance and wash, wash, wash your hands. Take care and remain vigilant for those around you, particularly those that are in known high-risk communities. Here at the District Gazette ‘We Live.Love. Local’ and take great pride in sharing stories that are local and relatable. We’re reaching out to (you) our readers for YOUR good news story. Do you have a story to share? A great achievement, a milestone, an accomplishment against all odds (during COVID)? An interesting career, a rare find, a talent, an unusual skill or hobby? We’d love to share your story, it might be exactly what our readers need to hear or know. Each month we receive a tonne of feedback which always puffs up our collars.... just like this one from Alison “It’s so nice to see the inclusion of Kid’s Corner in the Gazette!”..... aww thanks Alison, we’re glad you like our new look puzzle pages! Enjoy Your Community News. ‘Whatever you decide to do, make sure it makes you happy’.
