Walking with Blaxland, Lawson and Wentworth It is difficult to describe the feeling of walking in the footsteps of Gregory Blaxland, Lt. William Lawson and William Charles Wentworth, who succeeded 200 years ago in crossing the Blue Mountains, undoubtedly the most productive of all Australian exploration. I wasn’t exactly walking with Blaxland, Lawson and Wentworth, but with their descendants as part of a replica party dressed in period costumes. There was Gregory Blaxland Roberts of Scotland Island whose great-great grandfather was the leading explorer in 1813; Robert Bettington of Bullaburra whose greatgreat-great-great grandfather was William Lawson; and Charles Willis whose great-great-great grandfather was W C Wentworth. The original party also had three trusty convicts, a rifleman, four pack horses and five big dogs. In our re-enacting party, one of the convicts was Malcolm Brown, former Sydney Morning Herald journalist, who in January walked from Martin Place to Dubbo to raise funds for a charity. The re-enactment party had travelled from the site of Gregory Blaxland’s 1813 property near St Marys on Saturday 11th May

and reached Mt Blaxland beyond Little Hartley on Friday 31st May 2013. On the second last day, I was privileged to join the party. As we walked through trees and grassland with views of Mt Blaxland in the distance, beside us were faint traces of the road built in 1815 by William Cox. The experience was surreal and awesome. It was a very special thing for each of us to be able to take part in this great historic event. Congratulations to Springwood resident and Springwood Rotary Club member, John O’Sullivan, who conceived, planned and guided the event from his original dream to its completion. From the Editor Well, winter is well and truly here and with it an abundance of all those wintery germs. My household has been struck down by seemingly every virus and bug known to mankind. By the time you receive this edition, the school holidays will be drawing to a close, and if you are anything like me, it will be a relief to return to a ‘normal’ routine. What a fascinating story that Roger French shares with us on this month’s front cover. What a privilege and an exciting journey to be a part of, thank you for sharing your story Roger. Winter is the perfect time to spend in the kitchen, baking. There’s nothing like the delicious aroma of home-made apple pie to lift your spirits. See pg 13 for Grandma’s Apple Pie recipe. As usual, your July edition is packed with interesting news, ranging from our regular Anglican Parish Update (pg 4); Baptist Church Update (pg 8); Parents Corner (pg 14) Counselling Corner (pg 10) and a host of other news from our region. Bendigo Bank have a thoughtprovoking proposition to put forward to the community, read all about it on page 3. This July edition brings with it a strong message to hold those dear to you even closer and treasure the moments you have together. Enjoy the little things in life, one day you will look back and realise that they were the big things. Stay warm and healthy folks! Dose up on the garlic and vitamin C, and enjoy your local news!

Facebook Page Stirs Up Old Memories Graham Chapman who grew up in Llandilo had no idea the impact his Facebook page ‘Memories of Penrith’ was going to have on the greater Penrith region and community. Launched in May, it had 10,000 followers in the first week and currently stands at over 15,000 likers. The page became the fastest growing Facebook page in Penrith. His Facebook page is not only designed to attract attention from locals but allows you to take a walk down memory lane.

People are reliving places such as the old mud baths, swimming in the weir, the pulley system at Warragamba Dam and the floods from the past. Old friendships have been rekindled and many are finding those they had lost contact with through the site. “I have had probably 60 to 70 messages from people who have rekindled old friendships and relationships.” said Graham. Mr Chapman has also started Memories of Blue Mountains. “Like” the page at facebook.com/memoriesofpenrith, and take a trip down memory lane.

I just love these OLD school photos. Have you ever seen a happier bunch of kids? This is Wallacia Public back in 1965. Do you know any of these kids? The smiles are big that’s for sure! (Photo Source: www.facebook.com/memoriesofpenrith)

Matt’s a True Leader Local Warragamba resident, Matt Gould has recently been awarded a Churchill fellowship. Matt, who is a dedicated Deputy Captain with Silverdale Volunteer Rural Fire Brigade and the RFS as an online system officer based at RFS state HQ. The aim of the Churchill Trust is to provide an opportunity and enable Australians from all walks of life, who are leaders in their respective fields, to further their search for excellence overseas. “I’m very excited and humbled to be given this opportunity.” said Matt of his recent achievement. Matt’s specific fellowship is the Lord Mayor's Bushfire Appeal Churchill Fellowship for the study of ways to combat and reduce the impact of bushfires. Matt will be looking into the use of social media as a communication and intelligence gathering tool during fire emergency incidents. He will be travelling to the USA, UK, Belgium and the Netherlands to examine their systems and processes to see how we can utilise them in Australia. Given the high risk posed from fires in Wollondilly, the benefits the project could provide to our local area are significant. Congratulations Matt! Photo Courtesy: Emily Gould

ANGLICAN PARISH UPDATE

Minister Matt Olliffe • Anglican Parish of Mulgoa • Phone: 4774 0422 • Mobile: 0401 958 161 Sunday Church times: 8:30am & 6.45pm St Thomas’ Mulgoa. 10:30am St Paul’s Warragamba.

Walking on a Tightrope On Sunday June 23, 2013, two Christian men went to work. I went to work. Nik Wallenda went to work. I am the father of 4, he is the father of 3. Both of us have wives who love us and support us in our jobs. Both of us prepared for the day. Both of us came home to our families. Boring, so far! But the difference was, Nik is a daredevil highwire walker who crossed over the grand canyon without a safety harness with 30 kilometre an hour windgusts. I simply walked into our Anglican church buildings to kind people and warm fellowship. Both of us could have died. But neither of us did. We both prayed during our days at work. I thanked God for his kindness to us in sending Jesus to die and rise again. Nik thanked God for calming the cable. The cable Nik crossed over on was 5cm wide, and he had to walk 400 metres along it. It took him almost 23 minutes. The drop below him was almost half a kilometre. The Discovery Chanel broadcast the walk with a 10 second delay in case he fell. In 1978, his great-grandfather Karl Wallenda fell off a wire to his death. Nik followed in the (careful) footsteps of 200 years of this family ‘business’. Wallenda said of the role his faith plays: is ‘if I do fall and die I know where I’m going.’ (http://www.christianpost.com/news.) While I would never encourage anyone to do what Nik did, his attitude to death is not arrogance or presumption. It

is simply Christian. He is taking Jesus at his Word. Jesus said, ‘whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life.’ (John 5:24 NIV). Because of Jesus’ death and resurrection for us, those who trust the Lord Jesus Christ have already crossed over from death to life. While the Christian life is a narrow way, and the way to destruction is broad (Matthew 7:13-14), at least being a Christian is not a tightrope walk! Even the clod with the poorest balance and heaviest footfall can cross over from death to life. ‘Though he stumble, he will not fall, for the LORD upholds him with his hand.’ (Psalm 37:24 NIV) Matt Olliffe

Mulgoa Valley and Surrounds to Learn Benefits of Community Bank® Model Mulgoa Valley and Surrounds, June 2013: People living and working in Luddenham, Mulgoa Silverdale, Wallacia, and Warragamba are invited to find out more about the Community Bank® model at an information session on July 25 at the Wallacia Hotel. A Community Bank® branch can provide financial services to the community, employ local people and make funding available for projects that will benefit all. The Community Bank® concept was developed by Bendigo Bank to provide communities with the certainty that banking services and access to funding brings. Bendigo Bank Senior Community Strengthening Manager John Chandler said communities formed local publicly owned companies that entered into a commercial franchise to run a Bendigo Bank branch. “Bendigo Bank provides the banking infrastructure and licensing, while the community runs the branch operation and generates customer support in the area,” Mr Chandler said. “Together Bendigo Bank and the local community share the revenue, with local surpluses available for reinvestment into the community via grants, sponsorships and dividends to local shareholders.” There are currently 296 Community Bank® branches across Australia that have returned more than $100 million to support local communities. Mr Chandler said the Community Bank® model offered customers a genuine alternative to major banks. “Just like any branch of Bendigo Bank, Community Bank® branches offer a full range of banking and financial services, from everyday savings accounts to business banking and financial planning,” he said. “I encourage anyone who wants to find out more about

how their community can benefit to come along to the information session. “The session will hear from Trevor Hitchcock, the chairman of Hawkesbury Community Financial Services Limited, which oversees the North Richmond Community Bank® branch. “We started our North Richmond Community Bank in 2002. Since this time we have been able to return over $1million to various worthwhile community projects this has been a win win situation for our community and Bendigo and Adelaide Bank so much so that we are now in the process of opening another branch in Richmond” The information session will be held at the Wallacia Hotel on Thursday 25 July 2013 at 6.45pm for a 7pm start. Nibbles and a glass of wine will be provided. RSVP by 21st July 2013 to John Chandler on 0409 509 674 or email john.chandler@bendigobank.com.au.

Luke Priddis Foundation Did you know that as many as 1 in 88 people are on the Autism Spectrum? While many people with Autism are able to live a relatively “normal” life, for many life is a daily struggle. Imagine having a child who doesn’t know how to express love, who doesn’t hug you and who becomes violently ill when exposed to new smells or bright lights. Imagine a child who needs constant supervision so they don’t hurt themselves, run away or hurt others. There is no cure. But there is hope. Early intervention, like the programs run by the Luke Priddis Foundation make a difference and give kids and their families the support and assistance they need to overcome hurdles so they can participate fully in their community. We need YOUR help as we endeavour to do more and reach more kids – for more information, email General Manager Shane Skeen at info@lukepriddisfoundation.com.

Malcolm Neil Maude Father John Peter Evans 31/10/32 – 9/6/2013

21st August 1950 -26th May 2013

Father Evans was the much loved Warragamba Parish priest for many years and continued to work in the community well after he retired. He was on the Neighbourhood Centre committee as a member and as president and was very involved with youth work in the area. He was the Anzac Day Padre and well known throughout the community for his selfless, gentle nature and his dedicated commitment for important issues. He lost his house during the 2001 bushfires but managed to save the church building. Father Evans was born in Victoria but the Warragamba Parish was truly his home.

Malcolm’s family would like to thank you for the kind words of sympathy, cards and flowers received through this difficult time. We would especially like to thank Matt Olliffe of St Thomas’ Anglican Church Mulgoa for his care and support.

James Neu

In Loving Memory

Thank You

11/10/ 1927 – 3/7/2013 Jim has passed away following a fall at home. He was very well known in the community as March Marshall for the Anzac Day march, keeping everyone in order. He has lived in Warragamba since 1949 when he worked on the dam. He is survived by Dianne and Warren, his grandchildren, Janeane, Bronwyn, Daniel, Shane and Kelly and his 5 great grandchildren. Jim has been organising the Anzac Day march for 24 years and had been working with a small committee to improve the safety and running of the event. He was a life member of both the junior and the senior Rugby League clubs, 14 years as a director of the Workers Club and on the committee for the Senior Citizens club. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

BAPTIST CHURCH UPDATE

Pastor Uel Beggs • Warragamba Baptist Church • Phone: 4774 1476 • www.warragambabaptist.net • Sunday Morning Service at 9.30 am

A Christian Chat with Pastor Ron Baker

In our thoughts and prayers.

Please let me tell you about the greatest strike of all time. The unrest which came from the crowd was one of a frightening nature. Why, just a short while ago the crowd claimed Jesus Christ As a great teacher but now their hearts have been turned against him by other teachers, this was the scene on that day long ago and in many places it is the same today, many in the crowd that day cried 'Strike him now, Strike him now'' others in the crowd of that day spat in his face and struck him with their fists and others as they beat him cried out ''Now Messiah if you are a prophet tell us who hit you.'' Someone has said that it makes a lot of difference how you look at a thing and this is particularly true about the greatest thing that ever happened in all the history of this world, namely the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Some people can see clearly that it is God's gift of salvation for a lost world, but many others never see that, but how many of us believe what we have been told? Would you not agree that many of us are missing the meaning of the cross of Jesus Christ because we are refusing to believe the gospel of divine grace. Would you not agree with me that our world is constantly called to stand at Calvary to see what happened there to watch the son of God suffer and die. Nobody can really escape it for we are all there. Are we not living in a world of dreadful pessimism and despair. Honestly we are at our wits end, our world seems to be coming apart at the seams, but there is hope for all of us if we would only embrace the Christ of Calvary. Pastor Ron Baker

Our Pastor Uel had a large brain tumour removed last month. Thankfully it was benign. He is making slow progress in recovery. We are thankful to all who have been praying for him.

We’re Having a Birthday! When was the last time you visited Warragamba Baptist Church? Maybe you went to a Mothers Day Breakfast. Maybe a Seniors Dinner or a Connected Seniors Course. Maybe the Craft Group on a Thursday. For you it may have been Sunday School or Kids Club when you were a child. The Youth Group when you were in your teens. Whenever it was, you may be surprised to learn that on 13th July it will be 50 years since the very first service was held in the Town Hall Annexe. Over the past 50 years Warragamba Baptist Church has been an important part of the Warragamba/Silverdale Community. Not only has it always been there as a place of worship each Sunday, but has been involved with the local community in providing for the needy families with food hampers through the Neighbourhood Centre and supporting people of various ages through our various programs. Maybe its been a while for you since you visited Warragamba Baptist Church. You may be one of those who take the shortcut to the shopping centre by walking past the Church. Why not pay us a visit one Sunday morning at 9.30am. We would love to welcome you!

with Linda Cassell @ Psychology Works 4 All Phone 4773 3057 or 0421 507 191 email lindacassell@bigpond.com

I did it my Way… Symbolic and real losses are the psychological basis of many depressions. Old age represents a period of life where losses are cumulative and frequent. Many elderly people cope well with losses such as the death of their partner, siblings, friends and pets, and the loss of independence, health, home and lifestyle. However, for other people, these losses can trigger the development of depressive symptoms.* One emotion we often associate with old age is regret– the image of an elderly person feeling regretful over opportunities forever missed. Regret is a negative emotion that may be adaptive if it motivates action to learn from mistakes and become a smarter or better person. However, getting stuck in regret where there is nothing that can be done to change the situation can be damaging to mind and body. If we can teach depressed, older people to think like their more optimistic peers, we may be able to help them let go of regret. For the elderly, the developmental task may be to learn to live with and accept the life they have had, focusing on the positive aspects and forgiving themselves both for mistakes made and opportunities not taken. Feeling that one has done the best one can, given the circumstances and letting go of regret can lead to self-compassion and peace. Healthy aging is a task that we all must embrace as we move into the autumn of our lives. So at the end of our lives we can sing with Frank Sinatra: ‘Regrets…I’ve had a few but then again too few to mention.’ *go to www.blackdoginstitute.org.au for more information.

PARENTS’ CORNER Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) NepeanStudent-Wellbeing Worker – Mulgoa Public School Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services Ph: 0409 986 121 Centre: 4721 8520 Blog: http://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com

There are two base emotions – fear and love. How do fear and love play out in your parenting? Fear-based parenting views the child as bad, annoying, or timeconsuming. Love-based parenting views your child as worthy of your love, time, and attention. Fear-based parenting views the child as “manipulative and attention seeking”. Love-based parenting recognises that all behaviour arises from a need (physical, emotional, intellectual), and sometimes behaviour is a way of attempting to make a connection with the parent. Fear-based parenting emphasises the need for discipline and punishment. Love-based parenting emphasises the need for guidance, education, and relationship. Fear-based parenting seeks revenge or payback for a child’s behaviour. Love-based parenting seeks belonging and connection for the child. Fear-based parenting notices “bad” behaviour. Love-based parenting notices mistaken behaviour (Dan Gartrell). When we move from fear-based parenting to love-based parenting we move from ME (parent’s agenda) to WE (parent and child together). It is no longer us versus them. In fear-based parenting the parent reacts. In love-based parenting the parent responds. In times of high emotion, the parent remembers to Stop-Breathe-Think-then Do. In fear-based parenting the child’s feelings are dismissed. In lovebased parenting the child’s feelings are acknowledged. In fear-based parenting, the parent persuades, nags, begs, yells, and hits. In love-based parenting, the parent employs the “no talking, no emotion” strategy in dealing with mistaken behaviour (Dr Thomas Phelan). Fear-based parenting focuses on the person doing the wrong thing. Love-based parenting focuses on the behaviour. Through fear-based parenting, the child experiences shame, which can last a lifetime. Through love-based parenting, the child experiences guilt, which is short-term (Dr Daniel A Hughes). In fearbased parenting, the parent feels shame, blame, and guilt. In lovebased parenting, the parent tries to be real (Scott Noelle http://www. enjoyparenting.com/daily-groove/be-real). In fear-based parenting, the parent burdens the child with his or her own feelings, demands an insincere apology, and does not apologise for his or her own inappropriate behaviour. In love-based parenting, the parent talks about OK/not OK for self and child, seeks relationship repair, admits wrongdoing, and role models saying sorry. Fear-based parenting values the child for what he or she does. Love-based parenting values the child for who she or he is. In fear-based parenting, the parent is operating at a head level. In love-based parenting, the parent is operating from a heart level. “How do your words fall on your child’s heart?” (Lisa Nichols).

Tanya Cooks up a Storm with Kate The community of Glenmore Park were last month treated to a tasty, entertaining and thought-provoking evening at Glenmore Park Anglican Church with 2011 Masterchef winner, Kate Bracks. ‘The Masterchef’ attracted up to 300 ‘foodies’, including Member for Mulgoa Tanya Davies, Penrith Mayor Mark Davies and Councillor Bernard Bratusa. Guests donated a total of 239 non-perishable food items, which were distributed to Penrith Community Kitchen to help feed those in need. Hosts and resident funny men Steve and Johnno set the stage for a night filled with food, faith and fun. The evening involved a number of Masterchef challenges including a mashed potato making competition which put Tanya Davies to the test. Other challenges included identifying herbs in the herb challenge and a minestrone soup tasting contest. Kate revealed her passion not only for food, but her faith. Her cooking demonstration tickled the taste buds with a delectable Rich Dark Chocolate Mousse on show. The demo was not complete without a faulty camp stove, which proved to be a light hearted moment. A gourmet supper of desserts from Kate’s cookbook ‘The Sweet Life’, were on offer along with a gourmet ‘foodie’ show bag, donated by businesses, for all guests that attended. “What a fantastic night. I’m so proud to be able to share my food and faith experiences. It was very humbling”, said Kate.

PAWS A WHILE

with Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital

Staff Continuing Education

Even though the veterinarians and nurses at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital have studied and completed their relevant courses, there is always something new to learn. New products, drugs and procedures are being discovered all the time and we need to keep up to date with the current technology. For example, Hills Pet Nutrition is releasing a new veterinary only product range for cats and dogs. We allocate time each week where company representatives visit our clinic to provide on site training on new products. We also attend seminars and conferences, participate in webinars and complete many online refresher courses. Belinda attended the Veterinary Nurses Conference in Melbourne recently and came back with many new ideas and different ways of doing things to ensure the smooth running of the veterinary hospital. Come and ask us a question, if we do not know the answer, we will find it for you. One of my favourite quotes is ‘If you learn one new thing a day, then it is a good day!’.
