Jazzing It Up!

The 10th Annual Charity Jazz Dinner took place last month at the fabulous Twin Creeks Golf and Country Club in Luddenham. The night was superbly coordinated by Dr Adrian Sheen and was a huge success. This year, the event celebrated its 10th year and proudly supported the Esther Honey Foundation (EHF). The foundation operates the only veterinary clinic for the entire Cook Islands. All the veterinary services provided by the EHF are at no charge and rely on donations for funding. The night was attended by over 100 guests who were treated to a fantastic menu of food and drink as well as some spectacular entertainment. The festivities kicked off with the Mulgoa Road Jazz Band which included internationally renowned trumpeter Mike Hallam.

From the Editor Brrr it sure is getting colder. If you’re anything like me, you have already resorted to switching your heaters on or lighting your wood fires to remove that icy chill that hits in the late afternoons. I was very fortunate to attend numerous events in the local area last month, including the 10th Annual Charity Jazz Dinner, be sure to check out the highlights from the evening on page 6. I also enjoyed a wonderful evening out at Fernhill, read all about it on page 3. I hope to bring you some exciting news next month, as it develops, regarding Fernhill. Stay close........ Winter is my favourite season of the year, I really do enjoy snuggling up in my winter pj’s, with my fluffy slippers and gown, enjoying delicious soups and casseroles. We have a fantastic winter warming recipe for you on page 13 and if you are that way inclined, don’t miss the MasterChef event hosted by Glenmore Park Anglican Church see page 4 for full details. Rug up, and enjoy this edition of your local news and remember to take life one day at a time and enjoy the journey.

Community Show of Support for Ursula Fernhill Estate, together with Simon and Brenda Tripp, played host to a special fundraising event on Saturday, 1st June. In support of the LyceumGroup Foundation which was established in 2011, the night served as the perfect backdrop to help Ursula Stroh towards her journey in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race later this year. The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race is a unique event where anyone, even if they have never stepped on a boat before, can join the voyage and circumnavigate in an eleven month-long marathon. After an in-depth interview Ursula was offered a berth and is going to be part of a crew of 20 people on a 70-foot ocean racing yacht - one of a brand new fleet of 12. The race will cover 40,000 sea miles, do 15 races, and stop over in 13 countries. To cover the costs of the race, Ursula is driving a fundraising and sponsorship campaign, and also supporting the LyceumGroup Foundation. The LyceumGroup Foundation provide financial assistance to people with disabilities, mostly in the form of supplying equipment. Ursula hopes that through her ongoing support and fundraising efforts she can contribute to help at least one disabled child live a better life. Guests were treated to a wonderful night of entertainment offering the musical talents of Tom Lawson, winner of the recent Mulgoa Idol and Master of Ceremonies, Ross ‘Rosco’ Hutchison. The LyceumGroup Foundation’s Donna Economidis spoke about the organisation’s role in providing financial assistance to families and children with disabilities, whilst Ursula spoke about her preparation in circumnavigating the globe as part of the crew on the Clipper Yacht Race. Ursula leaves on the 8th of June for a four week intensive training program in the UK and will work from the London IBM offices for a month before the race starts on the 1st of September. You can follow her journey, and maybe even sponsor Ursula for a few sea miles, through her blog: http://blog.soletraveller.com.au HOST FAMILIES WANTED Enjoy a new culture and earn extra income! ANGLICAN PARISH UPDATE

Minister Matt Olliffe • Anglican Parish of Mulgoa • Phone: 4774 0422 • Mobile: 0401 958 161 Sunday Church times: 8:30am & 6.45pm St Thomas’ Mulgoa. 10:30am St Paul’s Warragamba.

Homework Help Club You may have noticed some activity around St Paul’s Anglican Church, Warragamba on Tuesday afternoons during school term, from 3 to 4:30pm. Its called ‘Homework Help Club’, located just across the road from Warragamba Public School. This is the third term we’ve been running Homework Help Club. And we notice that the club is meeting a need in our community. Homework Help Club is run by volunteers who are members of the Anglican Parish of Mulgoa. It’s free. All you have to bring is your homework. It’s for infants and primary age school kids, in two separate streams: Kindergarten to year 3, and years 4 to 6. We get between 20 and 40 kids most weeks. The program is simple. We have half an hour of outdoor games, weather permitting. We have about 20 minutes for afternoon tea, which usually involves an ice block, cheese and crackers, and fruit. Some wonderful ladies from our church spend the afternoon cutting up the fruit and serving it to the kids. We have 5 to10 minutes of bible time, usually involving a short presentation or video clip, praying and discussion, and some singing for the younger kids (they love it!). And we have half an hour of homework. Frequently the kids are able to finish their homework in half an hour, when they put their mind to it. If not, they’ve been given a good start to getting it knocked over that week. Sometimes the homework questions the kids get aren’t always easy, particularly the year 5 and 6 homework. Almost

every week they have questions about current affairs, which we need to ‘google’, or try and remember what we’ve heard on the news in the last week. Sometimes it involves looking up books -- remember those -- or wikipedia, for projects! Sometimes it is doing reading or times tables practice. It almost always involves maths and spelling. And sometimes, when the kids don’t get any homework that week, we do bible worksheets or craft. On the week before mother’s day some of the kids made mother’s day cards. The feedback we’ve had so far is positive. Some kids who never used to hand in their homework now do it. It’s often easier to do something difficult with the help and encouragement. And doing homework with friends always helps. So if you want a bit of homework help, you know where to find it. Matt Olliffe

Spectacular Result! A great morning tea hosted by Jean and Arty and all their wonderful helpers resulted in a fantastic $3,172 raised to aid cancer research. A grand total of $35,221 has been raised over the past 12 months. Pictured with Jean and Arty is Stephen Roberts - guest speaker from the Cancer Council.

Do you love everything ‘Masterchef’? Would you like to meet a ‘Masterchef’ in person? Glenmore Park Anglican Church are presenting a unique event: ‘THE Masterchef’ with special guest Kate Bracks (winner of Masterchef 2011 and contestant in Masterchef Allstars 2012) “We are excited to be able to present this event for the local community.” said John Lavender, Senior Minister of Glenmore Park Anglican Church. “Kate Bracks is a woman who is passionate about her love of food and her faith, and has a great story to tell”. ‘THE Masterchef’ is being held on Saturday 22nd June 2013 (at 7:30pm) at Glenmore Park Anglican Church and costs $20 per person. It is aimed at people aged 16 years and over, and will include Masterchef Challenges, a cooking demonstration by Kate Bracks, gourmet supper and a ‘foodie’ show bag. As part of the event’s ‘foodie’ theme, guests are invited to bring a non-perishable food item, which will be distributed to local organisations who feed the disadvantaged in our local community. Michelle Grice, one of the Coordinators of Glenmore Park Anglican Church’s salt&light ministry, said “We aim to relieve suffering, pain and disadvantage in our local area. While ‘THE Masterchef’ is an opportunity for us to enjoy a great ‘foodie’ experience, we are expanding the experience to include those less fortunate in our local community.” For more information or to purchase tickets, go to: www.masterchefgpac.com or call our Church Office on 4733 1635

YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE Graffiti is a menacing sight on our streets and in our civic centres. For residents and small businesses, the experience with graffiti is more direct. It’s malicious property damage, which is expensive to remove and leaves victims feeling angry and powerless. VandalTrak Ltd is a not-for-profit public company. Since 2008 we have helped the public join forces with local councils, businesses, the police and volunteer clean-up groups in the fight against graffiti vandalism. This website is designed to bypass the tangle of hotlines and different areas of responsibility, which often frustrate efforts to record, report and remove graffiti and to prosecute the offenders. A raffle was well received which helped raise some much needed funds for the charity. The event would not be complete without the ‘Mulgoa Idol’ contest, where the crowd was wowed by some amazing talent. There was singing, musicians, magicians and comedy. The ‘Mulgoa Idol’ crown was won by Tom Lawson from Mulgoa, who scored 260 points, singing ‘Summertime’. Tom was later joined on stage by Mike Hallam, doing an amazing rendition of ‘What A Wonderful World’ together. Tom’s musical talents have lead him to Australia, after immigrating from South Africa and is known to have sung at every Rugby World Cup since 1995. He was the crowd favourite and left the audience wanting more. “Tom was amazing. He has the voice of an angel. Dr Sheen has outdone himself this year. Century 21 - One Step Ahead

YOU and YOUR GP

Century 21 Nepean-Lower Mountains hosted a Landlord Investment Information Evening at Wallacia Golf Club last month. Century 21 (C21) owners Nikkole Dixon and Darrel Higgins co-ordinated an informative and educational night for both home owners and investors. They were joined by guest speakers and the teams from their four local offices (Blaxland, Warragamba, Glenbrook and Mulgoa) to discuss a number of topics such as Depreciation, Landlord Insurance and C21 Home loans. The event drew quite a crowd with up to 50 people attending. The feedback was extremely positive, with a number of attendees posing a wide variety of questions which provided additional substance to the evening. C21 hope to continue the success of these nights, adding value to anyone who has invested or is looking to invest in the local area.

Will the Family Doctor Survive? A meeting at the Penrith Paceway on Tuesday 11th June promises to be as important as it is unique. Asking the public to have their say as to what sort of care they would like from doctors in the community is an opportunity to consider if having a Family Doctor is an essential part of your care or an out of date idea. Put on by DOCTORS ACTION, a group founded by local GP Dr Adrian Sheen, the meeting will put help back on the agenda the Family Doctor. Most discussions about health revolve around hospital access and specialist care. As vital as they are, the first level of care by the Family Doctor has been all but forgotten. Yet your local doctor should provide you with straightforward cost effect advice as well as help you through the health system. In days when health cost and demands on the system are rising rapidly it has become even more important to have a Family Doctor who know you and your family. Why not go along, listen and have your say? DATE: Tuesday 11th June 2013. VENUE: Penrith Paceway, Cnr Ransley and Station Street, Penrith. TIME: 1.00pm to 2,30pm. Please be seated by 12.45

Silverdale Road Reconstruction

Road reconstruction along Silverdale Rd, from Econo Place to the Silverdale shops, is almost complete. This section of road was in desperate need of significant drainage works and road reconstruction, so the finished $420,000 project will result in a massive improvement to the overall condition of the road. While a majority of the work has been coated in a ‘spray seal’ (a thin sheet of bitumen covered with stone), Wollondilly Shire Council has been able to stretch the available funds to use asphalt at the Econo Place intersection and also at the entrance to the shops. One of the world’s most distinguished psychologists Swedish Professor Orsen Carte, suggests that parents of high school students should seriously consider allowing their children to join a gym. His study found that gym work strengthens hearts and lungs. Importantly it also produces students who are more physically alert and therefore more engaged in their studies. Parents also reported that after their child became a regular at the gym, there was a dramatic improvement in their relationship with their child. Professor Carte suggests gym attendance is an essential study tool for senior students. It sounds like a win – win situation; your child will be healthier and happier and you can rejoice in the new improved relationship with your child. Happy Bench-pressing! Linda

Cross Country On the 7th May 46 students from Holy Family school attended the annual Diocesan Cross Country Carnival at Eastern Creek Raceway. All students competed to their best and represented our school with great enthusiasm. Congratulations to all students who represented Holy Family, Miss Bennett and Mrs. Brennan on her role of Team Manager

and the many parents who assisted on the day with a variety of different tasks. Athletics Carnival The Athletics carnival was another success this year and we were blessed with great weather. House spirit was fantastic as students celebrated and cheered the success of others throughout the carnival. Congratulations to the Stage 3 leaders who put a great deal of effort into teaching the rest of the students the war cries. It was a fun and active day as we started off with the 800 metre run. As the day progressed, the students were able to participate in the 100m, 200m, hurdles and a range of novelty events. The final event, the school relay, was a highlight of the day with children from all levels of the school combining to make each house relay team. Such an event does not run as smoothly as ours without the support and assistance of many people. We would like to acknowledge the support of the teachers, parents and volunteers who helped throughout the day. Stage 3 Boys Soccer Gala Day Congratulations to the Stage 3 boys who participated in the Soccer Gala Day on 21st May. The boys displayed good sportsmanship throughout the day and encouraged their team mates in such a positive manner. Congratulations to the Blue team on playing as a team and continuing to play their best soccer in each game. We also congratulate the Red team for their fantastic efforts on the day and for coming second in their pool. Well done boys! We are very proud of the way you represented Holy Family

Mulgoa Primary School

from the desk of Principal: Mr Rob Francis

As usual everyone at Mulgoa Public School has been very busy. A number of children represented our school at the District Cross Country Carnival. While none of our students moved up to the next level, I was most impressed by our team spirit and never-say-die attitude. Our iPad Walkathon was a massive success! A significant amount was raised by students. When you add the contribution by the P&C who matched us dollar for dollar, it is a phenomenal amount for such a small school! I must make special mention of our hardworking P&C who completed a tremendous amount of organisation for this event. They are now focusing on the next venture, which will be our Market Day on Sunday, August 25. Last year the Market Day was incredibly well attended. We would love to see as many stalls as we can to make the day a great success. We are always on the lookout for stallholders so if there is anyone interested in hiring a space, please contact us at school. The Footsteps Dance Company has commenced its sport program and, from my observations, everyone is having a great time and learning new skills. The NRL Coles Clinics have commenced and our Years 3-6 students are really enjoying these sessions, which emphasise fun, skill development and participation. The debating team, capably coached by Mrs Blackley, has entered the local debating competition and started with a first up win. Mrs Forbes and Miss Saunders are busily preparing our dance groups for festivals and we have students from Class 5/6 entered into the West Sydney Wanderers Cup for soccer. I sincerely thank all of my wonderful staff who does so much to ensure that our children receive a quality education.

PAWS A WHILE

with Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital

Puppy PreSchool Puppies have a period of socialisation up to the age of 4 months old, during which time we encourage you to expose your puppy to as many new experiences as possible. But you must also protect them from exposure to disease. Puppy pre school is an excellent and safe way to provide this social contact for your puppy. • The aims of puppy pre school are: • To socialise puppies with other dogs and people. • To start basic obedience training. • To identify any potential behavioural problems early, so that measures can be introduced to modify that behaviour. • To educate owners on all aspects of puppy development, training and pet care. • To help make veterinary visits more enjoyable for dogs, owners and veterinary staff. To get puppies off to a good start so they become well controlled, well behaved and socially acceptable adults. To teach good manners to your puppy, so that you and your pet live happily ever after. We also offer a free puppy consultation with the veterinarian. Puppy pre school is run weekly at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, starting the first week of every month. Classes run once a week for 4 weeks, last approximately 1 hour each class and start at 7pm. Please call to book your puppy into the next Puppy Preschool Class. Please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. Call 4736 2027 to make an appointment. Check us out on Facebook and online at www.orchardhillsvet.com.au.

When we take into account the number of students we have competing in comparison to some of the other clubs a ranking of 9th place in Australia is an awesome achievement for our club. Sensei Bill runs classes for different ages an levels on Mondays and Wednesdays in

r James Zaiter, Ruben Anthony & Bill Damjancuk with their awards. Econo Place at Silverdale and classes for ladies martial fitness/ kickboxing on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 7.30pm. We are very proud of the students, instructors and club for their efforts and achievements especially with the results received for 2012.
