El Niño in force! Vigilance Required over the Hot Dry Summer! The entire country is still reeling from the shock of the recent fires that swept devastation over much of the state. Our thoughts and prayers go out to every person and animal affected by the fires. Tragedies like this bring together a strong community spirit, as collectively we take stock and rebuild our lives, and regain a sense of normality. A hot, dry summer was predicted, but it came as a shock to many when a fire sparked, and was driven down the mountains at lightning speed and with hurricane force, leaving a trail of destruction on Thursday 17th October. More of the dangerous weather conditions are to come. Australia is expected to experience hotter and drier conditions this spring and summer as a weak El Niño pattern develops across the Pacific Ocean. This is in stark contrast to the past two years, where La Niña conditions dominated, contributing to heavy rainfall and cooler temperatures across much of the country. And while we may have enjoyed it at the time, this has caused increased vegetation growth, which is now drying in the hot winds to become fuel for further bushfires.

From the Editor What a month it has been. As I sit here compiling your latest community news, I can’t help but feel overwhelmingly proud of the amazing show of community spirit in recent weeks. Looking back, the situation was surreal but the devastation left behind, very real. Like many of you, I too, know a number of people who suffered the loss of property and all possessions in the devastation of Thursday 17th October. Our thoughts and prayers go out to those that have suffered loss, and to all the incredibly amazing firefighters and volunteers who continue to fight for us every day. They say it’s going to be one of the worst summers in history for fires – if you haven’t already done so, make an action plan NOW! On a lighter note, and to take your mind off the fires, we have a spectacular PreChristmas lift-out, full of various discounts and offers, to get you into the yuletide spirit! A great opportunity for you to get a head start on your Christmas shopping! And, a huge highlight for your calendars in December, local band ‘White with One’ will make their debut in Mulgoa. It is expected to be very popular, I know I will be attending, read all about it on page 11. Never get tired of doing little things for others; sometimes those little things occupy the biggest part of their hearts. Be prepared and stay safe!

New Owners for Local Butchery Mulgoa Gourmet Butchery is excited to announce the arrival of new owners, Matt and Raelene Santas. The husband and wife from Silverdale took over the reins in early September and have been joined by existing staff Hayden Zarb (Manager) and Julie Bennett to provide you with the best quality meats on offer in the area. “Our goals for the business are simple. Keep the same high quality products in the shop that our customers are used to. We don’t plan on changing anything in the shop. Quality is our main priority. This is what has kept us as a customer of Mulgoa Gourmet Butchery for so long, so now that we are the owners, it’s not something that we’ll change”, said Raelene. The shop caters for all tastes and has a wide variety of products to choose from. Everything from T-bone Steak to Chicken Cordon Bleu, Gourmet Sausages to Atlantic Salmon are available. They also sell a small range of deli products too. There’s no doubt we are fast approaching the silly season and the team are ready for all the festivities. “We’re quickly approaching the busiest time of year, being Christmas and New Year. With every one hosting parties and cooking Christmas lunch, there’s a huge influx of orders for Hams, Pork, Turkey, Lamb, Gourmet meals and Seafood. We will do our very best to make this festive season joyful and delicious for all our customers”, explained Raelene. Serving the people and community is something the team look forward to. So what’s the best part about being a butcher? “It’s knowing that you’ve provided someone with the best ingredients for a scrumptious meal. We’re happy when we make someone’s life just that little bit easier and we don’t mind that they take all the credit because they’re the ones that have cooked it”, she said.

ANGLICAN PARISH UPDATE

Minister Matt Olliffe • Anglican Parish of Mulgoa • Phone: 4774 0422 • Mobile: 0401 958 161 Sunday Church times: 8:30am & 6.45pm St Thomas’ Mulgoa. 10:30am St Paul’s Warragamba.

The Bushfires We have recently experienced damaging bushfires. As it is only spring, it makes us wonder what summer will be like. The most serious fires were in Lithgow and the Blue Mountains, with two hundred houses destroyed and another hundred damaged. However, bushfire also broke out in Silverdale. Thankfully, three RFS choppers water bombed it into submission, averting a local disaster. We are thankful to God for the RFS and NSW Fire and Rescue for their dedication and skill. Also, many brigades from interstate attended. It is wonderful to be in a country with such resources and co-operation. And our volunteers are truly amazing. Debates will now rage. Is the early bushfire season a proof of global warming and climate change? Or does it show the dangers of greenies who won’t let trees be cut down to create asset protection zones? What do we learn from the loss of so many houses? Should councils allow homes to be rebuilt in such areas? How can these homes be protected? How did the fires start? For believers in God, there are hard questions about God. We can and must thank God that no lives were lost directly from the fires (although one man had a fatal heart attack defending his home). We should think of how much worse it could have been, and thank God, and those who helped. But still, 300 families without functioning homes is a serious problem. And the bushfire season is just beginning. Where is God in the bushfire? It is not so simple as saying ‘The devil sends bad things, God sends good things’. God says of himself in Isaiah 45:7: ‘I bring prosperity and create disaster;

SPOTLIGHT ON...

I, the Lord, do all these things.’ (NIV) God allowed the bushfire and destruction, as well as the saving of life and homes. God is sovereign and in control. Nor can we say that those who lost their homes are any worse than anyone else. Job was the most righteous man of his day, yet God sent terrible suffering to him while others looked on in safety. And Jesus says of disasters of his day, that those who suffered were no more guilty than the survivors (Luke 13:1-5). We cannot read God’s approval of us into our survival, nor God’s disapproval or curse into our suffering. Both suffering and surviving is a test. God tests the sufferer to trust in God and God’s goodness. And God tests the survivor not to be arrogant or self-satisfied (‘Well, it was their fault after all!’). Rather, the survivor is called to show compassion and kindness to the sufferer, realizing that next time, it might be me, and but for God’s mercy, there goes I. Being a Christian involves weeping with those who weep, and remembering those suffering as if we ourselves were suffering (Romans 12:15; Hebrews 13:3). Such is the golden rule – to love our neighbour as ourselves. We who have need to be generous and share with those who now do not have (1 Timothy 6:18). After all, the Lord Jesus Christ, though he was rich, yet for our sake he became poor, so that we through his poverty might become rich (2 Corinthians 8:9). May God enable us who have been spared to be generous to those who weren’t. Matt Olliffe Minister, Anglican Parish of Mulgoa

Luddenham’s Longest Living Resident

We are also looking for stall holders, old photos & memorabilia of the Luddenham area and performers for the talent show, as well as locals to help organise and to get involved with the celebrations. If you know Luddenham’s youngest living resident (the resident who has lived in Luddenham for the shortest time), you are welcome to nominate a young child or baby for this title (maybe they have not even been born yet). John Blaxland received a grant of 6,710 acres (27.2 km2) on 30th November, 1813. He was the older brother to the more famous Gregory Blaxland, and Luddenham was the name of their family property in Kent, England. BAPTIST CHURCH UPDATE

Pastor Uel Beggs • Warragamba Baptist Church • Phone: 4774 1476 • www.warragambabaptist.net • Sunday Morning Service at 9.30 am

A Christian chat with Pastor Ron Baker Oh my it is almost Christmas time again and all of us are in one way or another becoming involved with the Christmas rush and I can hear myself screaming – [stop the escalator I want to get off], as we all know an escalator is a moving stairway in many department stores. We thank God for the right use of escalators – but did you know that escalators have become a symbol of grave danger that threatens our modern world? Today when men talk about escalation – they are not talking about moving from floor to floor in a department store – they are talking about escalating from peace into war – from life into world-wide death and from prosperity into universal destruction. Yes my friends the escalator is an appropriate symbol of our modern predicament, because it adequately conveys the helplessness we often feel as world events seem to move with deadly earnestness toward some final crisis. Is there a word from God for people like us who live in a world that is as tense as ours. The bible reveals that there is a lot of truth in the escalator idea. According to the bible the movement of humanity through time is like people riding on a moving stairway one of these days they are going to reach the end and they will have to get off. Indeed the idea of an escalator captures something of the biblical idea that all of us are moving with inevitable decisive and irreversible progress toward the day when history as we know it will be terminated. Yes we are on an escalator today moving toward the end of history – an end which God will bring about – not men, in light of the bible the reality of the great day of the lord cannot be questioned.

Dear friends at the end of the last century wise men laughed at the fiery description of the end of time – but we do not laugh today for there is a striking parallel between the biblical words and the atomic wasteland that will follow nuclear warfare. Indeed we are on an escalator today that moves swiftly and with surety toward that day when the world as we know it will be subjected to fire and be destroyed. But it is not here yet and as long as the day of judgment does not come there is time for you and for all men to turn to the son of God and receive his glorious salvation. Until that day dawns we live in a day of grace in which the message of Christmas and the cross of Calvary can be heralded throughout the world… Ron Baker Pastor, Warragamba Baptist Church

Penrith High School student Matthew Ramirez was amongst 80 young people who recently took part in the YMCA NSW Junior Parliament at NSW Parliament House. Matthew was selected as the Junior MP (Member of Parliament) for Mulgoa, which includes Glenmore Park. He sat on the Committee investigating Education and was elected Lead Sponsor for the Education Policy and Shadow Minister for Education. Matthew enjoyed the experience and found it invaluable. “The highlight for me were the Parliamentary debates. I was astonished to see how passionate people were and stand up for their ideals. Personally, I really enjoyed advocating for my community by conveying how the policies relate to them” said Matthew. PARENTS’ CORNER Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) NepeanStudent-Wellbeing Worker – Mulgoa Public School Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services Ph: 0409 986 121 Centre: 4721 8520 Blog: http://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com NOTE: You may recall that last month’s sibling conflict article was to be continued this month. Due to problems arising from the bushfires, the second part of the sibling conflict article will now be in the December issue, so keep an eye out next month. Apologies.

In her 1995 Boyer Lecture titled “A Truly Civil Society”, Dr Eva Cox, an Australian sociologist and social commentator, said that our homes can be the most toxic places for our children. She said that it was an indictment on our society that children are sometimes safer with kind strangers in early childhood services and schools than they are with family. One of the ways of creating a safe emotional environment is to make your home a “be kind zone”. In this zone, no-one, including the adults, call each other names or tease each other. No put-downs are allowed. This has worked very well at my place with three boys. They rarely call each other names or tease each other, but if it happens they say “that’s a put-down and that’s not allowed”. It has also made them more assertive and resilient outside the home. They don’t accept put-downs or teasing from other people. My boys were watching the movie “Parental Guidance” during the recent school holidays. They told me that in one scene a little boy said “that’s a put-down, you owe me three put-ups” to which his sibling replied “I like your shirt, I like your shoes, I like your hair”. My boys loved this. They changed “put-ups” to “pull-ups” and made it a rule that the pull-ups had to be genuine, related to the skills and personal attributes of the person. We all make mistakes in relationships, and sometimes our tempers or frustrations get the better of us and we say things that are less than kind. When there is a rupture in the relationship, it’s important that we focus on repairing the relationship. This is done in many different ways, and for children put-ups or pull-ups is a good way of repairing the relationship and re-establishing an emotionally safe environment.

Mice Study Reveals How Brain Takes Out Garbage During Sleep * A mice study gives new meaning to the old adage that a good night’s sleep clears the mind. Researchers at the University of Rochester Medical Centre have found that a recently discovered system that flushes waste from the brain is primarily active during sleep. “This study shows that the brain has different functional states when asleep and when awake,” said Maiken Nedergaard, M.D., D.M.Sc., co-director of the University of Rochester Medical Center’s, ‘Center for Translational Neuromedicine’ and lead author of the study. “In fact, the restorative nature of sleep appears to be the result of the active clearance of the byproducts of neural activity that accumulate during wakefulness.” The study, published in the journal Science, reveals that the brain’s unique method of waste removal — known as the glymphatic system — is very active during sleep, clearing away toxins responsible for Alzheimer’s disease and other neurological disorders. The researchers also found that during sleep the brain’s cells reduce in size, allowing waste to be removed more effectively. The new findings are a result of the discovery last year by Nedergaard and her colleagues of a previously unknown system of waste removal that is unique to the brain. The system responsible for disposing cellular waste in the rest of the body, the lymphatic system, does not extend to the brain, the researcher noted. This is because the brain maintains its own closed “ecosystem” and is protected by a complex system of molecular gateways — known as the blood-brain barrier — that controls what enters and exits the brain. The brain only has limited energy at its disposal and it appears that it must choose between two different functional states — awake and aware or asleep and cleaning up,” said Nedergaard. “You can think of it like having a house party. You can either entertain the guests or clean up the house, but you can’t really do both at the same time.” Another finding that startled the researchers was that the cells in the brain “shrink” by 60 percent during sleep. This contraction creates more space between the cells and allows CSF to wash more freely through the brain tissue. So for all of us who think there is always cleaning to be done and garbage to be taken out, this study has proven us right! ** to read the complete article go to www.psychcentral.com

‘White with One’ to Play in Mulgoa Local band, ‘White with One’, released their new EP on the 9th of November. The EP, titled ‘hello sir!’ was recorded at Queens Road Studios in Lawson with producer and local musician Jake Nauta. The five-track EP was released independently by the band. White with One formed in 2012, after a group of friends from the Blue Mountains and the surrounding areas got together to bring to life the compositions of the bands song writers, Jen Denny and Kathryn Gilchrist. One member, Miles Stepniewski, is a local from Mulgoa. The group is taking big steps in the music industry, earning a number of accolades this year. Their first recorded single ‘Awaiting Reprieve’ reached top spot on triple J’s indie charts and peaked as high as sixth on the overall charts. The band opened for the prestigious Jake Nauta at his show at the Clarendon Guesthouse earlier in the year. Their music has already been featured on a number of promotional videos, including the BUPA health insurance awards video, which was filmed at Nepean Lookout in Mulgoa. (SEE IT HERE: http://www.dustinmilner.com.au/portfolio/ bupa-2013-health-influencer-blog-awards-2/) This diverse EP features everything from brass instrumentals, glockenspiel solos and six-part harmonies. Their folksy melodies are mixed with exciting and playful tones that provide a sound everyone can enjoy. Mature song writing underpins the EP, brought to life with catchy tunes that remain in your head for days. The band is playing several shows in the coming weeks with a show at St Thomas Anglican Church on the 5th of December. Anyone of any age will enjoy the sweet melodies of White

The French gave the biggest Christmas present ever in 1886. It was the Statue of Liberty, and they gave it to the United States of America. (The French have one too, a smaller one, in Paris.) The first artificial Christmas Tree wasn’t a tree at all. It was created out of goose feathers that were dyed. Christmas has many, many names. Do you know some of them—aside from, of course, Christmas? How about? Sheng Tan Kuai Loh (China), or Hauskaa Joulua (Finland), or Joyeux Noel (France)? In Wales, it’s Nadolig Llawen, and in Sweden, God Jul.
