The 4th Annual Mulgoa Valley / Glenmore Park Writers’ Festival was held at Glenmore Park High School on Tuesday the 23rd of October. The event showcased the writing skills of Primary and Secondary students across eight local schools. The schools that were represented included Luddenham Public School, Mulgoa Public School, Wallacia Public School , Warragamba Public School, Glenmore Park High School, Glenmore Park Public School, Regentville Public School and Surveyors Creek Public School. Each student, who was selected to attend the event, had written about their hero or who had inspired them. The highlight of the evening was the attendance of Guest Speaker, Lisa Forrest. Lisa, a former Olympian, spoke to the captivated audience of writers across the Mulgoa Valley and Glenmore Park Community of Schools. Lisa shared stories about her life as a champion swimmer and how she was able to draw upon these experiences when writing. Lisa is a successful author for young adults with her first book ‘Making the Most of It’ having been added to the NSW Board of Studies recommended reading list for Years 7 - 10. Family and friends were privileged to see the huge amount of talent and dedication the students showcased when reading about their heroes and inspirations. The event proved to be a great success where the students were the true champions of the night! Guest Speaker Lisa Forrest at the Writers Festival with students from Luddenham Public School.

It’s Official! On the 19th October Mayor, Cr Col Mitchell, along with State Member for Wollondilly Jai Rowell, Paul Stevenson Chairman of the Veolia Mulwaree Trust and Neville Slender Secretary and former President of the Warradale Soccer Club, attended the official opening of the facilities at Waterboard Oval in Warragamba. The facility includes: Canteen, Storage, Office area, Male, Female and Accessible Toilets, BBQ and sheltered area. The project was funded in partnership with Council, Veolia Mulwaree Trust, State Community Partnership program and Warradale Soccer Club. Following a Tender process, Oz Rock Constructions were awarded the Contract. "These facilities are among the best we have in our region," exclaimed Mayor Mitchell, "and they should be considered a benchmark for all future facilities across the shire. Outcomes like this prove how effective collaborative partnerships are, and I commend all parties involved. I would like to in particular thank the Warradale Soccer Club for raising $30,000 for this project, which is no small feat for a local sporting club to achieve." Some of the members from the Warradale Soccer Club who have been very proactive with this project for many years raising funds and pursuing it with Council include: Neville Slender (current Vice-President and former

ANGLICAN PARISH UPDATE
Minister Matt Olliffe • Anglican Parish of Mulgoa • Phone: 4774 0422 • Mobile: 0401 958 161
Thank God... for everything!
I remember walking with my dad from my grandmas to home as a little boy, and asked him where the wind came from. Dad said something about air currents. And so I asked him about where air currents came from. Dad said something I can't remember. I think I might have asked another question like, 'Where does that come from?' Eventually, Dad's answers about meteorological information ran out. And I said to myself, 'There must be a God'. At theological college, I learnt that this process of reasoning had a fancy word describing it, the 'cosmological argument', or the argument from causes. Events are explained by causes outside them, and we are thus pushed to find a final cause. Ultimately, that cause is the creator and sustainer of the universe, God. The order and beauty of the world suggest that this creator is intelligent. The suffering in the world suggest we have a problem with God. According to the bible, both inferences are true. God is good and wise and intelligent, but because of human sin and our rebellion against God, God has subjected his good world to frustration and death, as a just consequence for our sins, and so that we would trust him and long for a new, better world (Romans 6:23; 8:20-25). God has still left abundant proofs of his existence and goodness. He shows us kindness by giving us this earth with it's orderliness, power to create wealth, rain, food in due season, and the joys of life (Acts14:17; Psalm 145:15; Deuteronomy 8:17-18). He gave us the time and places of our lives, so that we might reach out for him (Acts 17:26-27). By looking at the creation, we can see that God is there, and is powerful and wise (Romans 1:20). God rewards those who believe that he

exists and who diligently seek him (Hebrews 11:6). But the most wonderful proof of what God is like is that he sent his Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus is the exact representation of God, being God from God (John 1:18; Hebrews 1:3). But after living the perfect, sinless life, out of his great love for us he died a horrible death on the cross for our sins. He did this to take the punishment for our sins, so that we might be forgiven. Then he rose again, ascended to God's right hand, and one day will return. Now he promises us forgiveness and the Holy Spirit when we trust in him as Saviour and Lord. Thank God for everything he has given us!

The Story Continues
No Stone Goes Unturned!
One of our readers recently contacted us regarding some concerns relating to the continuation of the Mobile Library service. Wollondilly’s Mobile Library is a popular service provided by Council for residents throughout the Shire, including Warragamba and Silverdale. The Mobile Library operates on a fortnightly timetable visiting eleven townships. As quoted on their website, “Due to circumstances beyond our control the mobile library will have major disruptions to its service for an indefinite period of time, affecting all locations.” The Library apologise for the inconvenience this causes but thank residents for their ongoing patience and understanding during this time. Visit council’s website for more details and updates: www.library.wollondilly.nsw.gov.au/ mobile-library
On the 17th October, Wollondilly Shire Council held the presentation evening for the Wollondilly Garden Competition. The presentation was well attended with over 150 people there for the announcement of the winners. The evening was also attended by Mayor, Cr Col Mitchell, Cr Lou Amato, Cr Kate Terry and Cr Judith Hannan. Photos and a full list of winners from the Garden Competition will be available to view on Council’s website at www. wollondilly.nsw.gov.au and on their facebook page at facebook.com/wollondilly .”Like” the council page to view all the entrants photos. Congratulations to Judy Davis of Warragamba who was awarded 2nd Place for the Small Residential Category and Angelo & Rosemary Grima of Silverdale who won the Large Residential category and were also awarded as the Grand Champions.

RescuED Rules! Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) fire fighters from Regentville Fire Station delivered the FRNSW road safety education initiative RescuEd at Nepean Christian School on Friday 26 October 2012. Senior Firefighter Ray Irving said the RescuEd program was aimed at reducing the number of young people injured and killed on NSW roads. “People aged under 26 represent just 15% of drivers but were involved in 36% of all road deaths,” firefighter Irving said. “Roads and Maritime Services statistics show that speeding is the major
cause of death and injury on our roads contributing to over 40 per cent of fatal crashes involving young people aged 17-25 years. More than 80 per cent of speeding casualty crashes involving Pplate drivers occur in urban areas including 60 per cent in the Sydney region.” .“We believe the RescuEd program has a powerful impact on teenagers because they learn about the tragic consequences of road accidents from rescue operators with first-hand experience rescuing young people,” firefighter Irving said. The RescuEd program, which runs for almost 2 hours, features:
A video case study “Tim’s Story” featuring wheelchair bound accident victim Tim Rafton who was injured in a serious accident on the F3 when he was 17; Firefighters demonstrating a motor vehicle rescue; A discussion between students and firefighters about the causes and consequences of road accidents and the steps students can take to reduce the chance of being involved in one. Senior Firefighter Irving said the program specifically targets Year 9-11 students so that they can learn about the reality of horrific accidents before they get behind the wheel. “It is about encouraging respect for the road and responsible behaviour behind the wheel.” The RescuEd program is delivered by rescue accredited FRNSW fire stations. High School principals in the Penrith area are encouraged to contact Regentville fire station on (02) 4733 6851 to participate in the program.

My Dad
A daughter’s story of a REAL HERO By Lauren and Jessica Preston
Over the weekend my Dad competed in two events at The World Firefighter Games 2012, these were the driving challenge and a stair climb of Centrepoint Tower in Sydney. The stairclimb was very difficult as Dad had to wear his firemans outfit with tanks on the back which help you breath when you go to a fire his mask and helmet and boots which weighs 23 kilos he said he walked at least half the way as he got very tired. In total there is 1435 stairs so Dad was very proud to make it to the top, lucky he was able to come back down in the lift. The Driving challenge which was through witches hats with tennis balls on top and you had to go through them in the best time and without knocking off any tennis balls, Dad only knocked off 5 balls and he had the time of 4 minutes and 24 seconds. We found out yesterday that my dad was the best driver from 43 competitors from all over the world and he won the GOLD medal. We celebrated Dads Gold medal last night in a presentation at the firefighters village at Pyrmont, they had a party environment with lots of music. Dad got called up on stage and we were cheering really loudly I was very proud. 2078584m_ccg_w50

COUNSELLING CORNER
By Linda Cassell When you’re going through a rough patch, a good listener can make all the difference. Sometimes friends and family are too close – you might fear upsetting them, they might have unconscious agendas, they might betray your confidence or they might be part of the problem. When we hear another’s concerns and worries it’s easy to fall into the trap of “telling them what to do”, sharing your own similar experiences or trying to solve the dilemma for them. Although well intentioned, advice is not always what’s needed and can be disempowering, taking away your right and responsibility for your own choices. Giving advice undermines the principle that each of us has the answer within and may just need time and space for it to emerge, which can be hard to find in a busy life. A safe person and place where you can be totally open and honest about your dreams, doubts and fears – without criticism or judgement – are the gifts of counselling and therapy. One of the central misconceptions of counselling is that you will be told “what to do” or how to “fix” your life. Not so. A professional counsellor’s role is to listen, watch and, where appropriate, ask questions to help you hone in on your own innate strengths and abilities. We draw on a toolbox of proven techniques and theories as necessary. Ultimately, however, research consistently shows that the alliance - the therapeutic relationship - and your own motivation are the keys to change. * Linda Cassell - Assoc MAPS, Master of Counselling, Psychology Honours (BASS) - is a psychologist and counsellor in private practice in Luddenham. PARENTS CORNER Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services Ph: 0409 986 121 Email: Narelle@nepeancommunity.org.au Blog: http://oranaplaygroup.wordpress.com
Parenting through reward and discipline Our society, schools, judicial system, way of parenting is built on reward and discipline. If your child does something “naughty” you apply some discipline. If your child does something well you apply some reward. Sounds good and right doesn’t it? So, why then, do I see so many parents who are confused and struggling, when they are clearly doing what society approves of - reward and discipline? A lot of parents are really struggling with their children’s behaviour. If you have more than one child, it’s a fair bet that one of your kids challenges you on a daily basis. I think that when parents hear the word “discipline”, they automatically think they have to be mean in order to “teach the child a lesson”. You don’t have to be mean. How do you feel when someone is mean to you? Children are people too. Parenting is a balance between taking charge and being kind. There are times when you have to take charge to keep your kids safe and let them know about the limits. And in between times you can be kind. But you can be kind whilst taking charge. When you think of “discipline”, do you think – payback? revenge? anger? drawing a line? hurting your child to make a point? Now, change the word “discipline” to “education” or “guidance”. Does that change how you might approach you child’s mistaken-behaviour next time?
Of course, if your child is about to step in front of a car, you don’t say “Sweetie, I don’t think that’s a good idea”. No, you quickly pick him up and bring him to safety. But most issues of mis-taken-behaviour are not life and death. You can actually take a moment to breathe and think “what is the best way to handle this so my child will actually learn something here?”. I call this “Stop, Breathe, Think, Do”. If you react immediately to your child’s behaviour, you are likely to do what your parents did to you. How did you feel when you were a kid, and your parents hit, screamed at, called you names, rejected you? Realistically is your child going to learn the lesson immediately, first go? Nah, you are going to have to repeat the lesson many more times for your child to “get it”. What will be most effective in the long run? Taking the education/guidance approach or being mean? If you would like to know more about this guidance approach, there is a brilliant website that you can subscribe to. It’s called Aha! Parenting (http://www.ahaparenting.com/_blog/ parenting_blog) and it’s written by Dr Laura Markham. Take the bits that work for you, and let me know how you go.

Mulgoa Welcomes New Principal
from the desk of Mr Rob Francis
My name is Mr Rob Francis and I am the new Principal of Mulgoa Public School. I was previously Assistant Principal at Hoxton Park Public School in South Western Sydney. Hoxton Park Public School has approximately 580 students so you can imagine my surprise to be in charge of 76 students in a school. I must admit that it is a pleasant surprise. My first term as Principal of Mulgoa Public School is turning out to be a busy one! Stage 2 has been on a camp to Yarramundi while Stage 3 are heading to Berry next week. Seven students were selected to participate in the Writer’s Festival at Glenmore Park High School. Author and former Olympian, Lisa Forrest addressed the audience with recollections of her time at the Olympics and her decision to become an author. The nominated students from each school then read their writing to small groups. I was extremely proud of all of our writers who showed talent and imagination. Four students represented our school with pride at the Regional Spelling Bee finals. While they did not win, they gave a good account of themselves. Darren Horgan from the ‘Panthers on the Prowl’ program has organised fitness sessions for all classes in the school. Darren has put together some fun activities to promote healthy lifestyles. Our senior students will also be travelling to Panthers for a special Expo Day that promises to be a lot of fun. Students have enjoyed the weekly gymnastics sessions at our school while a number of students will be representing our school at the Small Schools Basketball Gala Day at Cambridge Park Stadium. With the weather hotting up, many of our students will shortly participate in the Swimming Scheme. Learning to swim is extremely important and we hope to make our students confident in the water. World Teachers’Day was celebrated in fine style! Our supportive community presented teachers with flowers, chocolates and diaries. What a lovely surprise! What has impressed me about Mulgoa Public School is the dedicated and nurturing staff, the supportive community and the friendly, welcoming students. I feel very lucky to be here and I look forward to a long association.

Damfest a Success! Thouasands of people flocked to attend Damfest held in Warragamba last month. In it’s eighth year; organisers were pleased with the phenomenal success of the day. Damfest is always a great family day attracting a large crowd to Warragamba. With many activities available for young and old, there was something for everyone. One of the main attractions of the day were the helicopter flights over the Dam, providing the ride of a lifetime with a remarkable view. The car and bike show had a great response from competitors; the cars were impressive. Children of all ages were enjoying themselves on the amusement rides and the animal petting zoo. A true highlight for the kids was special guest ‘Rexie the Dinosaur’. Children came up close and personal to meet the star of the day, with lots of squeals of delight to be heard. The stunt bike riders were amazing and always attracted a crowd. Many families were reported to have entered the Billy Cart Derby and the Tug-o-War was a spectacular event to watch; with congratultions extended to the RFS on their win! The Damfest ‘Kids Art Competition’ was well represented with an overwhelming 65 entries; the judges commenting on the ‘high standard of art’ that was submitted. The winners were: Hayden Butterfield (3) in the 3 - 5 year category. JessiRose Anderson (9) in the 6 - 9 year category and Dean Godwin (12) in the 10 to 13 year category. Well done to all that participated. The success of the day goes out to the dedicated, hard working and professional team of Damfest organisers, the many volunteers and the very strong show of community support. See you next year!

A hot, dry summer is forecast, and with that, comes a greater risk of fire. Homeowners are being urged to act now to protect their homes and property ahead of the looming bushfire season. NSW Rural Fire Service Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons said, “The last two years were dominated by the La Nina pattern which typically brings wetter and cooler conditions. This season, the El Nino pattern is returning and trending towards drier and hotter conditions as we move into the summer period.” It is likely that the combination of warmer weather and grass growth from the recent rains could contribute to a dangerous fire season, so be prepared. Wollondilly Shire Council is working in partnership with the NSW Rural Fire Service - Wollondilly (RFS) to convey some very important messages. Bush fire season is here and if you haven’t considered completing a Bush Fire Survival Plan – you should. A Bush Fire Survival Plan provides a checklist for preparation of your home and information that you need to know if a fire is nearby. You can download a copy from www.rfs.nsw.gov.au . For the next few months there will be variable message boards (VMB ‘s) in place at various locations to remind residents to prepare adequately for the fire season. Hopefully this will also encourage residents to complete a Bush Fire Survival Plan. The VMB’s are currently situated in Mulgoa and either side of Warragamba / Silverdale. The message on the VMB is “Planning to make a plan is not a plan. Complete your Bush Fire Survival Plan NOW.” For information about a Bush Fire Survival Plan or related information please check the RFS website on www.rfs.nsw.gov.au. You can also “Like” their Facebook page for local information and news feeds at RFS Southern Highlands Team.
Orchard Hills Vet News Santa Photos With Your Pets Santa Claus will be visiting Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital during December 2012 to take photos with your pets. Santa will be here from Monday 3rd December until Friday 21st December 2012. Photos of your pets are to be taken with Santa from Monday to Friday 5-7pm and on Saturdays 10am12pm. No appointment is necessary for the Santa photos, just drop in and don’t forget to bring your camera if you want extra photos. A gold coin donation to the Guide Dogs for your photo in a Christmas card will be greatly appreciated. Safety for Your Pets During the Upcoming Festive Season Snakes – The warmer weather means that snakes are emerging from hibernation. Be aware that we live in a semi-rural area, and snakes will be about. A snake bite to your pet can be deadly, so fast veterinary attention is required to administer snake antivenom. Clinical signs of snake bite include: weakness, collapse, twitching of the muscles, vomiting, dilated pupils, and later stages include blood in the urine. Paralysis Ticks – Ticks are more common in the warmer weather. If you and your pet travel to the coast or beach or lower Blue Mountains, your pet may bring a tick home and then show signs of weakness, gagging, vomiting, drooling saliva and paralysis. Tick antiserum is the antidote, and early treatment is advised. Please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. Call 4736 2027 to make an appointment.
