Tanya Davies MP, Member for Mulgoa, proudly announced an historic milestone for Fernhill Estate, where they played host to the 2013 Emirates Melbourne Cup as part of the Cup’s national tour earlier this month. On the magnificent grounds of the historic Fernhill Estate, the Penrith Valley Chamber of Commerce, the Penrith CBD Corporation with the owners of Fernhill Estate, Simon and Brenda Tripp, hosted a 2013 Melbourne Cup breakfast for local business owners and community members “There are only 34 sites within Australia that have the privilege of hosting the 2013 Melbourne Cup in the lead up to ‘the race that stops a nation’ and Fernhill Estate was one of these sites” Tanya Davies said. “This rare opportunity to host the 2013 Melbourne Cup is testament to not only the strong Melbourne Cup connection that Fernhill Estate holds, but also to the modern vision that new owners, Simon and Brenda Tripp hold for Fernhill”

ANGLICAN PARISH UPDATE

Minister Matt Olliffe • Anglican Parish of Mulgoa • Phone: 4774 0422 • Mobile: 0401 958 161 Sunday Church times: 8:30am & 6.45pm St Thomas’ Mulgoa. 10:30am St Paul’s Warragamba.

Let’s Call it what it is: Adultery It’s been rebadged as an ‘affair’, rehabilitated, and recommended. Celebrities do it. Politicians hide it. TV shows and movies glorify it. And our society now embraces it. A newspaper publication recently ran a story about ‘affairs’. They promoted a website for married people seeking an affair. It has more than 3 million members. The founder commented that the workplace is ‘an ideal place for a passionate affair’. What they are promoting is simply the grubby old selfish and anti-social sin of adultery. In the Old Testament, God said it was punishable by death (Leviticus 20:10). In the New Testament, God says something worse awaits the unrepentant adulterer. God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral (Hebrews 13:4). Revelation 21:8 says ‘But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars - they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.’ Such verses scare me. They should scare you, too. God meant them to be scary. Adultery means people have broken their marriage promises. They have betrayed their spouse. For a few moments of illicit passion, relationships are now wrecked for life, and the consequences rebound to the previous and next generations. Just look at what happened to King David’s family when he committed adultery (2 Samuel 11-21). The serial monogamy of our culture is no better. The Cth Family Law Act 1975, which introduced no fault divorce, reduced marriage to a string of relationships lasting a few months or years, ended when one party wants for any reason. Because couples regularly cohabit before marriage, they usually don’t wait the legal 12 months before re-partnering. Jesus speaks directly about serial monogamy. ‘Anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, makes her the victim of adultery, and anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery (Matthew 5:32 NIV)’. It is legalized adultery. God is not fooled. Jesus calls everyone to faithfulness in marriage or celibacy in singleness.

Faithfulness extends to the eyes: ‘But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.’ (Matthew 5:28). It is not ‘you can read the menu, but you must eat at home’. No, you can’t read the menu! The 10th commandment, ‘Do not covet’, means the same thing. If we’ve thought about adultery, we’ve done it in our hearts, and God has seen. I suspect we all have something to say sorry to God about. All have sinned (Romans 3:23). If you recognise that you’ve sinned, there is forgiveness available if you repent and turn to Jesus Christ. You must give up your adultery (whether in body or mind) and ask Jesus Christ to forgive you. His death shows he is willing and able to forgive. And read this from John chapter 8:2-11:’The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say? ”They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him. But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground. At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” “No one, sir,” she said. “Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.” (NIV) Matt Olliffe Minister Anglican Parish of Mulgoa

SPOTLIGHT ON . . .

Melinda Leyshon – WriteCopy

Melinda Leyshon is a local girl who decided to take control of her own career development after the birth of her daughter. After ten years, travelling to a gig in corporate publishing wasn’t appealing compared to play doh and nursery rhymes! So she reinvented herself in order to find that elusive work/life balance. She is well-known in the Penrith business community as the Managing Director of Production Automotive, but 12 months ago she went back to her first love, which was writing. WriteCopy, a copywriting agency, has taken off – requests for tenders, website copy and SEO copywriting, blogs, newsletters and even editing of an occasional book (or three!) are coming in left, right and centre. What began as a labour of love has quickly become a thriving enterprise. The moral of the story? “Don’t be scared to step outside of your comfort zone and trust in yourself. It’s definitely mentally challenging, but with the right support structure anything is achievable! Focus on what you love doing, and have the faith that you are good at it.“ Melinda works with small and corporate businesses to ensure their communication is streamlined and professional. New Rules for Your Pool “Backyard Pool Legislation sets out the safety guidelines for pools. Having a pool or spa with the correct safety measures can mean the difference between life and death. In the lead up to Summer there is no better time to check your pool safety compliance,” said Mayor, Cr Benn Banasik. With the release of amended swimming pool legislation on the 29 October 2012 and the NSW State Government’s Swimming Pool Register deadline looming closer, Wollondilly Shire Council is taking this opportunity to remind private swimming pool owners that all private swimming pools and spas must be registered by 29 October 2013, after which penalties of $220 may be issued to owners for unregistered properties. Property owners have two options for registering their properties; they can either register online through the State Government’s website at www.swimmingpoolregister.nsw.gov. au or request the Local Council to register their property with the payment of a small $10 fee. The State Government released a circular stating “The new rules will mean that every pool owner must take responsibility to make sure their pool complies with current regulations,” and aims to “place the onus on backyard pool owners to certify that their pool barriers are up to standard.’’ “It is coming up to Summer and soon everyone will be swimming in their backyard pools. But is your pool safe? Do the gates and fences comply with State Government Legislation? To check this you can apply for a Swimming Pool Compliance Certificate for a fee of $119 through Council. This year be sure about the safety of your pool,” says Mayor, Cr Benn Banasik. The new legislation will also require that after 29 April 2014 all properties that undergo a change of owner or tenant must have a valid Swimming Pool Compliance Certificate.

For information, fact sheets and pool safety checklists visit Wollondilly Shire Council’s website at www.wollondilly. nsw.gov.au.

BAPTIST CHURCH UPDATE

Pastor Uel Beggs • Warragamba Baptist Church • Phone: 4774 1476 • www.warragambabaptist.net • Sunday Morning Service at 9.30 am

A Christian Chat with Pastor Ron Baker Are you a misunderstood person? Are you screaming from the depth of your being for someone to understand you? Are you angry because nobody understands you? Could it be that you are suffering ‘ “the misunderstood emotion” called “anger”. In 1983 Carol Tavris wrote a book titled “Anger - The Misunderstood Emotion”. In her book Carol argued that getting angry causes more problems than it soles and adds to the psychological problems angry people have. There is no question in the mind of the medical world and the experience of Counsellors that if we give vent to our anger we cause more problems than we solve. In fact the problem that caused the anger in the first place is joined by the problems that result from our anger, so if you do become angry easily and “fly off the handle” your life is probably very difficult because your anger keeps creating problems for you. Did you know that the Bible talks openly about our anger and it also tells us how we can overcome it, indeed it tells us about something wholesome and good that can replace the unknown anger we have to deal with. In the Bible in Ephesians ch.4. we read “In your anger do not sin. Do not let the sun go down while you you are still angry. Get rid of all bitterness rage and anger brawling and slander along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another forgiving each other just as in Christ God forgave you would you really like to overcome the anger that is tearing up your life?

Do you understand what I mean when I talk about the hidden anger that can affect us even when we do not realise we are angry. Have you ever asked yourself how compassionate you are towards others? It is very important that we develop compassion... when I read “forgiving each other just as in Christ God forgave you” It seems to me that this means very simply that if I am going to replace my anger with more emotions, I should believe in the Lord Jesus Christ indeed our loving God comes into our lives with his astonishing mercy and asks us to be kind and compassionate and forgiving as we live together. In the words of the Bible we find all our answers for all our problems. Yes to be understood we must understand. Wouldn’t you like to be understood? Pastor Ron Baker

Community Enhancement Project By VandalTrack – Wollondilly Precinct

VandalTrak Wollondilly is proud to announce the commencement of a Community Enhancement Program for Warragamba. Recently VandalTrak Wollondilly volunteers cleaned the graffiti from the front of the old butchers shop in Fourteenth St. It was then that the idea of enhancing this property for the benefit of the community was raised, with a suggestion from a local business owner on how to do it from overseas examples. After negotiations with the building owner VandalTrak will be installing a mural in place of the main window of this building. The old butchers shop is one of the original shops from when Warragamba was built in 1951 and at one stage was owned by the late Frank Mackay (former Shire President and First Mayor of Wollondilly). It has a great place in the history of the township of Warragamba and is a great place for further history to be created. While the project will be undertaken by VandalTrak Wollondilly and it’s volunteers, it is being done for the community with the permission of the owners. The planned mural to be done is a painting of Warragamba Dam from the downstream perspective and will be done by local artist Terry F. The project requires several steps and is expected to take several weeks to complete. The first stage is purchasing the board to be used, then this board needs to be cut to suit, assembled and painted and sealed ready to have the mural painted onto it. It will then be coated with a non sacrificial graffiti coating to protect the surface from damage.

Ingredients • Serves 4 500g boneless, skinless chicken breast, trimmed 13/4 cups reduced-sodium chicken broth 3 tablespoons rice vinegar 3 tablespoons reduced-sodium soy sauce 3 teaspoons toasted sesame oil, divided 2 tablespoons tahini, or cashew butter 1 tablespoon minced fresh ginger 2 cloves garlic, minced 500g snow peas, trimmed and thinly slivered lengthwise 2 tablespoons chopped cashews Method 1. Place chicken in a medium skillet or saucepan and add broth; bring to a boil. Cover, reduce heat to low, and simmer gently until cooked through and no longer pink in the middle, 10 to 12 minutes. Transfer the chicken to a cutting board to cool. Shred into bite-size pieces. (Cool and refrigerate the broth, reserving it for another use.) 2. Meanwhile, whisk vinegar, soy sauce, 2 teaspoons sesame oil and tahini (or cashew butter) in a large bowl until smooth. 3. Heat the remaining 1 teaspoon oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add ginger and garlic and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 1 minute. Stir in slivered peas and cook, stirring, until bright green, 3 to 4 minutes. Transfer to the bowl with the dressing. 4. Add the chicken to the bowl with the peas; toss to combine. Serve sprinkled with cashews.

PARENTS’ CORNER Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) NepeanStudent-Wellbeing Worker – Mulgoa Public School Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services Ph: 0409 986 121 Centre: 4721 8520 Blog: http://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com

Got more than one child? Chances are that a lot of your energy is spent sorting out the interactions between them. It’s a big button pusher for parents. It’s also practice for life in the big, wide world of school, work, and interpersonal relationships. Sibling rivalry is just conflict, and there are various conflict management tools that you can use… • Be a good role model. Your kids are looking at you, and they are the best imitators. If you don’t handle conflict well, your children won’t either. • Make your home an emotionally safe place to be. One of your house rules should be that the home is a “no put-down zone” or stated in more positive terms a “be kind zone”. That’s no teasing or name calling by both children and parents. • Make your home a physically safe place to be. Have firm consequences for physical violence between children. Do you smack your children? As one parent said to me years ago “I smack my children for hitting each other, it just doesn’t make any sense”. Parenting courses like Triple P provide you with the tools for positive parenting. • Focus on your children’s positive behaviours. The more you focus on their positive behaviours the more positive their behaviour will be. This is backed by forty years of research. Actually pay attention to when they are getting along well, and give them descriptive praise, for example, “I really like how nicely you are playing together, you are using nice words and being kind to each other”. I ask my boys in a curious manner, how they were able to play so well together after a great session. This gives them the opportunity to reflect on what works well in getting along. • Encourage your kids to use “I-statements”. An I-statement focuses on you owning your own feelings, for example, “when you do … I feel … And remember to use them yourself! However, sometimes the brother is making that high pitched noise because he knows it annoys his sister, and hearing that it makes her angry gives him the satisfaction he was seeking. I-statements are a good tool for being assertive and owning your own feelings but they don’t provide resolution in all situations. • When the kids are starting to get a bit scratchy with each other you can get closer to them. I call this technique “proximity and presence”. School teachers use it with disruptive students in the classroom. They get closer. • You can try some problem solving (from the Second Step programme)… “What’s the problem?” (get them to state the problem objectively with no blame attached) … “What are some solutions to the problem?”…For each solution ask… “is it safe?; how might other people feel about it?; is it fair?; will it work?”. I’ve used this technique with children from age 4 and up. • Sometimes you just have to separate kids so they can chill out for a while. Sometimes feuding kids can’t see past the overwhelm to think of other strategies, and need assistance from an adult to break the pattern of conflict. Wow! This is such a big topic. I will have to continue it next month. Basically, the more positive the home is the less conflict there will be, but there will always be some. Conflict provides the opportunity for greater understanding and that’s always a good thing. I have a heap of parenting groups coming up in Term 4, so hop on over to http://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com/2013/08/28/ parent-groups-term-4-2013/ to have a look to see if something interests you. There is a lot of interest in these courses at the moment and places are limited.

COUNSELLING CORNER with Linda Cassell @ Psychology Works 4 All Phone 4773 3057 or 0421 507 191 email lindacassell@bigpond.com *You’re in love — deeply, passionately, crazy in love. You want to move in together. You are sure you want to share the rest of your lives. You want to marry. Stop! Before you reserve the moving truck or buy the ring, take the time to discuss the issues that can make or break your relationship. Love really isn’t enough. Once the pheromones calm down, once you get over the intoxicating time of new love, how you handle these topics will decide whether you will have lasting love. It’s essential that you are on the same page, or at least in the same chapter, when it comes to your feelings or convictions about each one. Don’t assume that of course you and your true love are in agreement just because you are in love. Once the wonderful haze of new love settles into daily loving, there are the issues that can become deal breakers. Better to talk about them before making a commitment than to find yourselves astonished, angry, and saddened by huge differences that can’t be resolved. Serious discussion now can prevent a painful breakup later. Even more important, conversations about these issues can help you get to know each other better and to lay down a united and strong foundation for your relationship. Happy Romancing!!! *to read the full article go to www.psychcentral.com Linda
