Car Boot Sale for Warragamba Hobby Hut Warragamba Hobby Hut will be holding a Car Boot Sale this month on Sunday 18th October, in the grounds behind Warragamba Bargain Centre (13 Third Street, Warragamba). Stall sites will cost $10 and will be limited, to comply with social distancing restrictions and regulations. Early site bookings are advised – don’t miss out. COVID-19 has caused the cancellation of the traditional festivities in October, resulting in less marketing opportunities for locals in the Warragamba area. Events such as Damfest (which has been postponed until 2021) and the Wollondilly Shire wide Big Garage Sale which would normally be held this time of year have been removed from the marketing calendar. For more information about the Warragamba Hobby Hut Car Boot Sale and bookings, contact Erica Berton on 0490 142787 or via email at ericaberton131@gmail.com. v

Pastor’s Corner My wife Barbara and I have enjoyed watching the Masterchef series this year. Whilst personally, I don’t have any aspirations to be able to cook like any of these talented people and I am not sure that I would even enjoy tasting all of the dishes they make. What I do find interesting is the journey they undertake in the Masterchef kitchen. There are moments of great success and triumph, moments where the dish, doesn’t reach their own expectations, nor the approval of the judges. Of course, they all must finish, with ultimately only one winner. To me, their experiences are like a snapshot of life. There are moments of joy and moments of sadness, and every other experience in between. The Sister-In-Law of my eldest daughter recently passed away. She was forty-one and an incredibly talented teacher and mother of three young children. She had fought courageously for three years to survive the impacts of cancer. A time came when she left this life, leaving behind a husband, children, parents, a brother, and so many others who loved and cared for her. Sad definitely, tragic not so much, because she was a woman of inspiring faith. She knew with certainty that God had prepared a place for her. Romans 8.39-40 says: “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” That certainty brought her and those that loved her peace of mind and assurance that there is more to come, after this world. I wonder, are you certain and assured of your eternal future? Because there is a certainty about death, none of us know when, or how, but we all know that it will happen. Are you ready? My prayer is that everyone will find faith in Jesus Christ, know the peace and security of an eternal life to come. FAITH – ANGLICAN PARISH MULGOA

Apparently, my identity had been used for criminal activity and they needed to question me. What should I do? I felt threatened that I had done something wrong! Did you pick it? Yes, it was clearly a scam. After figuring this out, I felt angry that others might not realise it was a scam and get caught up in it. There was little I could do to stop that. Then my anger was directed to the person on the other end of the phone. After asking my name, I asked them if they knew there was a pandemic taking place. Surely during a pandemic people would be wanting to do something useful for others each day? Sadly, no. I asked if they had considered doing something useful instead of stealing people’s money. The line went dead. Was the person on the other end of the line deeply evil? Were they just doing a job to get some money? Would they otherwise be in poverty if they weren’t scamming money from Australians? Would I do the same thing if I were that desperate? While I was angry, I also saw that in a different set of circumstances I might feel pressured into acting in such a despicable way. It reminded me that as a Christian, I don’t think of myself as better than anyone, just someone who has been forgiven by Jesus.

Silverdale Recruits

RFB

Welcomes

New

We've got you covered!

The show of support from the local community during the recent bushfires was amazing and this has continued with Silverdale Rural Fire Brigade (RFB) recently welcoming 9 new recruits to the team. This was the most members they have taken in one intake and the biggest in the last 20 years. The new recruits include Stewart Brown, Brett Davidson, Breanna Burgess, Tommy Sabljak, Scott Hinton, Beccy Smith, Brett Smith, Matthew Wheatley, and Adrian Sidoruk. The intake was off the back of a huge expression of interest to join the various Rural Fire Brigades right across Wollondilly, with approx. 300 enquiries locally. “Our newest recruits come from all walks of life. They are a mixed group with different strengths and skills. Some have done apprenticeships, whilst others are professionals. They’re a great team and we’re happy to have them on board” said Barbara Jolley, Captain of Silverdale RFB. The recruits underwent intensive training over several months. The task was made harder due to COVID and the restrictions attached to it. Personal logs covering various topics, a theory test of 30 questions (requiring 100%) and practical assessments as a team to demonstrate their skills formed part of the training. Once passed, they were ready for the truck. Silverdale RFB currently have 35-40 members, with an active base of 15. The brigade has three vehicles consisting of a Category 1 tanker, a Category 9 truck (brand new and smaller than the tanker) and a personnel carrier, which does not have firefighting equipment. “All throughout the bushfire season late last year and early this year, the community support was truly outstanding. There was so much mental and physical help offered. It was quite overwhelming” explained Captain Barbara. With the fire season ahead, it’s important to have a plan and to be prepared. Once you have a plan, make sure that you discuss it with all the members of your family. Silverdale RFB held a NSW Rural Fire Service Open Day on Saturday 19th September, where local residents could discuss their bushfire survival plans and get more information. “We appreciate the support of all the brigades in the community. It’s their hard work and dedication that is needed when we all come together as one in times of adversity. They are all just as important as one another” ended Captain Barbara. r [Back] Stewart Brown, Brett Davidson, Breanna Burgess, Tommy Sabljak, Scott Hinton. Station Locations for Western Sydney’s New Metro

The station locations for the new Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport project to service Greater Western Sydney and the new Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) airport have been revealed, with the project also set to deliver a multi-billion dollar boost to the New South Wales and Australian economies. NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian, Minister for Transport Andrew Constance and Minister for Western Sydney Stuart Ayres recently inspected the site of the future Western Sydney Aerotropolis Station. “The Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport project will support 14,000 jobs, including 250 apprentices and inject billions of dollars to the NSW and Australian economies” Ms Berejiklian said. “Where we are standing will become a major new transport interchange, right in the heart of the future central business district for the Western Parkland City”. Federal Minister for Population, Cities and Urban Infrastructure Alan Tudge said construction would start this year on the around $11 billion mega-project that would deliver economic support and local jobs. “This city-shaping investment is being fast-tracked to help our economy recover from COVID-19 and deliver a major stimulus right in the heart of Western Sydney” Mr Tudge said. “Western Sydney residents will reap the benefits of this

investment well before the first train leaves the station”. Exact station locations have now also been confirmed on the 23-kilometre driverless railway line at St Marys, Orchard Hills, Luddenham and two stations at the airport. NSW Minister for Transport and Roads Andrew Constance said the tender process has also started to deliver 10 kilometres of twin Metro railway tunnels, with the call for registrations of interest. “Construction starts later this year on a project that will become the transport spine for the Western Parkland City” Mr Constance said. “The new railway will link residential areas with jobs hubs and connect travellers from the new airport with the rest of Sydney’s public transport network”. New South Wales Minister for Jobs, Investment, Tourism and Western Sydney Stuart Ayres said the project will be a game changer for the region. “This will provide the backbone for the economic and broader development of the Western Parkland City” Mr Ayres said. Federal Member for Lindsay Melissa McIntosh said the Australian and NSW governments are working together in preparation for the airport opening for passenger services. “The huge investment in Western Sydney Infrastructure projects is creating an interconnected city that will enable innovation, support growth and create jobs to build an exciting future for Western Sydney” Mrs McIntosh said. Supporting the airport and Aerotropolis is a key part of the Western Sydney City Deal – a 20-year agreement signed in March 2018 by the Australian Government, NSW Government and eight Western Sydney councils.

That Mighty Wombat Spirit It was a season that promised so much, until the pandemic hit. Despite the setbacks, the Warragamba Wombats JRLFC came together and finished the 2020 season on a high, with the Under 16B’s winning their Grand Final. The local club had started strong with 107 players registered this year, fielding two teams in the Under 6’s and Under 7’s and one in the Under 8’s, Under 9’s, Under 13’s, Under 15/6 and Under 16’s. After an initial 3 trial games at Warragamba, the season was then suspended due to COVID, before returning to play a 7-game reduced competition with strict guidelines in place. “Because of COVID, we were only able to host 3 home games this season. Even with the challenges, we would like to thank our hardworking Committee, families and friends for their support and the many things that were done, particularly behind the scenes. Our appreciation goes to our sponsors that were able to assist us in a difficult time. We are all so excited to have our Under 16B’s win their Grand Final too. Go the Wombats” said Bec Love, Registrar of the Warragamba Wombats JRLFC to the Mulgoa Valley Gazette. The challenging season meant that new protocols were in place and that game day was quite different. With this, the club lifted, showing that the Wombat spirit is alive and well! “The Wombat community, being the families and friends of the club, have been great in following the health guidelines. This meant that we could not have additional visitors or the opportunity for teams to hang around, watch or support other age groups. A special mention goes to Angela Finianos, our COVID-19 Coordinator who took this role very seriously and was wise in all areas of protecting our players, families, and the community” explained Bec. The Wombats look forward to arranging new uniforms for the 2021 season. This is due to the NSWRL ruling that Warragamba now falls under the NSWRL and not the Country Rugby League. “We have applied for a grant through Active Kids and hope to be successful in securing funds to supply new uniforms in 2021. We are also working to upgrade the dugout area of the fields with funding being applied through Local Grants” ended Bec. The club hope to recruit girls in the Under 13’s, 14’s, 15’s and 16’s next year to join Warragamba for a Girl’s League Tag team. PARENTS CORNER

Article Written + Submitted by: Narelle Smith Family Practitioner E: handsheartsandminds@gmail.com Blog: https://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com/

All Feelings are OK

Some parents tell their children that strong emotions such as anger, frustration, and excitement are unacceptable. Strong emotions are OK. They are normal and all of us will feel them at some time in the day or week. Strong emotions are quite motivating and energising. Think about how much can get done when people get angry (for example, Vincent Lingiari, Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, Nelson Mandela). So, all feelings are OK, but it is what we do with our emotions that matters. It is not OK to hurt someone else’s feelings or physically hurt others when we are angry. It is also not OK to blame someone else for how we feel, for example “you make me feel angry”. You are having the emotion and taking responsible for how you feel gives you the power to change it. Blame is a dead-end street – it stops you from feeling that you can take the initiative to make changes. The components of emotional regulation include (for children aged over 4 years): • Acknowledging where you are at – Feel it to heal it. • Labelling your feelings – Name it to tame it. • Doing something to calm down – Deep breathing, counting backwards, telling yourself to ‘calm down’, thinking happy thoughts. • When you are calm, understanding what was going on for you. When the child is calm and ready to talk, calmly discuss the behaviours you observed and what was said. Ask the child what might have sparked the outburst. What was s/he feeling? Google ‘feelings chart’ and ‘anger iceberg’ for some cool visuals. And finally, what could the child do better next time when s/ he is having big feelings? All disruptions are opportunities for repair and learning. Parenting is an opportunity to coach a child in ways that make them better humans. As parents, we also have to role model the skills we want our children to learn, so emotional regulation starts with us. r

Local Businesswoman Finalist in 2020 Altitude Awards

Local businesswoman and our resident education expert, Sara Drebber, is a finalist in the 2020 Altitude Awards for her second consecutive year. This time she is a finalist for the Revolutionary and Best Professional Service Business Categories. These categories are for outstanding service-based professional businesses and groundbreakers in their industry throughout their career, respectively. Sara is a passionate educator, consultant, writer, and mother of three, whose award-winning local business, edUcatered, has flourished under her guidance since its inception 3 years ago. With almost 20 years’ experience working in education, Sara brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to her role as an educational consultant and tutor. It has always been her aim to create a nurturing and supportive environment in which children can develop and learn, so the finalist awards are just a bonus to the joy of supporting learning of those using her service. “It is an honour to be included in both a business excellence and leadership category this year. I am grateful to have this opportunity to be recognised for my hard-work and that of my team, especially given the challenges we have faced this year with the pandemic” Sara explained. The Altitude Awards are jointly presented by Women with Altitude and The Men’s Altitude Network. They are held annually to provide an opportunity to acknowledge those who have made outstanding contributions as business owners, volunteers, employees, creative thinkers, and leaders. Women with Altitude founder, Andrea Turner-Boys said, “We look forward to this time each year when we celebrate and champion the achievements of individuals and teams from our regions. Each finalist has been chosen for their outstanding contributions in their field and will be presented with their finalist certificates at regional networking events across NSW and the ACT, throughout the month of September”. An independent judging panel adjudicates the awards, and winners of each category will be announced at a gala awards ball on Saturday 7th November at the LCC Event Centre in Prestons NSW.

Latest @ Luddenham by Wayne Willmington

The Planning Package for Western Sydney Aerotropolis has been finalised, and now the Western Sydney Planning Partnership is undertaking precinct planning for the initial precincts. This includes sequencing, staging, and responding to the timing of infrastructure delivery. These will go on public exhibition before the end of the year. Luddenham is in the Agribusiness Precinct with objectives to: encourage diversity in agribusiness including related supply chain industries, food production and processing that are appropriate for the area, encourage sustainable and high technology agribusiness, including agricultural produce industries as well as enabling sustainable agritourism. Finally, encouraging development that is consistent with the character of Luddenham Village and maintain its rural landscape character and biodiversity of the area. Luddenham Village is now separate, and the future vision, role and function of Our Village will be explored further during precinct planning. This includes detailed investigation of certain land uses that are sympathetic to the character, history, and heritage values of the village. In the interim, the Aerotropolis SEPP will involve provisions allowing development that would otherwise be prohibited to be carried out if it would have been permitted with consent in the former LEP that applied to the land. In existing residential areas or land approved for development, the ability to construct dwellings will not be removed and renovations to existing houses or extensions will still be allowed. The Western Sydney Planning Partnership will consult with the Luddenham community during precinct planning to develop the vision, function, the rate/extent of change and manage expectations of village character (At the time of going to print, we have not been advised on how the

consultation will happen). We also had confirmation that Luddenham will get its own train station in Luddenham Road. The Luddenham Country Markets are still very successful, and the October dates are 11th and the 25th. Expression of interest are now open for entertainers and attractions for the 2021 Luddenham Show on the 6th and 7th March and applications can be made to secretary@ luddenhamshow.com.au The Show Society have decided to run the 117th Annual Show in line with COVID restrictions that still may be in force. Last month saw the completion of roadworks on the southern part of Northern Road to Bringelly. It also saw Adams Road reopen and the new Elizabeth Drive and Northern Road intersection now with traffic lights. Designing Your Building Project

Home Design Choices

Solid Walls and Glass in Windows It is recommended that in Winter, walls facing the north and west are constructed of a solid mass such as brick or concrete. While these solid walls are facing the sun in Winter, they will warm up during the day and radiate warmth throughout the home. These walls will take some time to cool down and this will reduce time to warm up your home in Winter with an electric or wood-fired heater, reducing your power bill. In Summer, these solid walls will take some time to warm up after the cool night. In most cases, it will stay cool during the day because of the shielding of the veranda or other shade structures built around your home. Glass windows facing the north and west must be of a highquality aluminium or timber/cedar structure. They must be totally sealed around the wall frame with no gaps or openings. Most of your heat loss or gain into your home is through your windows and doors. It is therefore very important that good quality aluminium or cedar windows and timber doors are installed professionally. The glass of the windows is a critical item and must be observed as per specifications in NSW with the Basix requirements. Glass in windows comes in forms and specifications by architects and building designers. This includes double glazing to single glazing with a specific coating to keep the heat and cold out of your home. The windows with specified glass facing north, west, south, or east can have different glass to suit the orientation of the home. The window’s size is also an important item. Stay with the recommended specified size and don’t make changes, unless approved by your architect or building designer. If you make changes without the approval of your designer, the house will be either too hot or too cold to live in. (See next issue for a continuation of this topic)

PAWS A WHILE

Article Written + Submitted by: Camille Brandt from Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital A: 49 Wentworth Rd, Orchard Hills P: 4736 2027

Get Started

RSPCA Cupcake Day

1.Prepare Grab your apron and preheat those ovens – Cupcake Day is returning this October, with the official day Monday 26th October. Unfortunately, due to the Coronavirus crisis, we will not be hosting a Cupcake Day this year. So sad! We will have to eat all of the cupcakes ourselves!! We have a fundraiser page on the RSPCA website for online donations. We will match all donations that we receive!! So bake away and donate to the RSPCA.

https://www.rspcacupcakeday.com. au/fundraise/fundraisers/profile/view/ orchardhillsvet Share some of your photos on our Facebook page of your baking successes, masterpieces and failures!!! This year, thousands more furry faces, waggy tails and feathered wings need your baking skills more than ever. With safety precautions still in mind, we’d love you to return for a socially safe, physically distanced or virtually vibrant Cupcake Day to remember. Whether you’re whipping up doughnuts, lamingtons, brownies or traditional cupcakes, the funds you raise at your Cupcake Day event help rescue, rehabilitate and rehome animals in need all over the country. Invite your workmates, schoolmates and regular mates along for a sweet-tastic time. With a pinch of community and a cup of good conversation, your Cupcake Day event has the potential to bake real change! If you can’t host your Cupcake Day in person there’s no ‘knead’ to worry – get your workplace crew together online to share a cupcake (or two), to help raise much-needed funds to fight animal cruelty.

Monday 26th October

You can use Skype, Zoom, Facetime or Messenger to host your Cupcake Day online. Share your fundraising page to everyone joining and ask guests to donate what they would have contributed to your physical Cupcake Day event.

2. Plan

Decide what your online event looks like. Will it be a virtual bake-off, a knock, drop and dash in exchange for a donation – take baking orders from your friends, family or work colleagues and deliver them straight to their doorstep! You could even host an online baking quiz, Masterchef trivia anyone?

3. Party

Party up with your friends and family over a virtual cuppa, enjoy your favourite sweet and savoury treats and share your favourite recipes with your guests. Play some virtual games and fundraise from home. Don’t forget to hang up your bunting and most importantly tell everyone about all the animals they’re helping! The RSPCA is the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, a non-profit, community based charity that works to prevent cruelty to animals by actively promoting their care and protection. The RSPCA is not an agency of the Australian Government and therefore relies on the generosity of the community – through animal adoptions, volunteering, event participation, donations, fundraising, corporate partnerships, corporate support, bequests and grants – to support its vital daily work. Go to the RSPCA website for more information, https://www.rspcacupcakeday.com.au/ Donate to our RSPCA fundraiser page: https://www. rspcacupcakeday.com.au/fundraise/fundraisers/ profile/view/orchardhillsvet For more information check out our Facebook, website www.orchardhillsvet.com.au or call 02 4736 2027. HEALTH MATTERS

Article Written + Submitted by: Andreas Klein Nutritionist + Remedial Therapist from Beautiful Health + Wellness P: 0418 166 269

What are Good Food Sources of Zinc for my Joint Cartilage? Zinc has outstanding global public health importance. Last month, we showed zinc’s virtues for knee and other cartilage. We saw that zinc activates > 300 bodily enzymes, that it’s used in > 3000 different human-proteins representing 10% of all body proteins. So, it’s IMPORTANT!! Australia’s government recommends a daily zinc intake from food (RDA) of 14mg (men), 8mg (women), 11 and 12mg during pregnancy and lactation. Other countries recommend even higher intake levels. Many Australian men (37%) and women (9%) have inadequate zinc intakes. For males 71 years and older, 66% get inadequate zinc, as do 82% of pregnant women worldwide. Zinc is particularly important for pregnant women, who are vulnerable due to additional zinc demands associated with pregnancy and fetal development. Vegetarians generally get less zinc and are vulnerable to deficiency. Modern diet/lifestyles make getting enough zinc difficult (more next month). So that you get an idea of foods to eat regularly to improve zinc nutriture, I’ve listed zinc content (per 100g) for common foods below. Obviously, plant foods are poorer sources. In order of zinc content, fruits < vegetables < legumes < nuts ≈ ground spices ≈ fish/animal products < liver < oysters. All foods are uncooked.

• • • •

Fruits: oranges 0.06mg >pawpaw 0.3mg Vegetables: tomatoes 0.12mg > garlic 1.0mg Legumes: kidney-bean 1.0mg >soya-flour 4.1mg Grains: wheat 0.84mg (white) 1.3mg (w/meal); rice 1.2mg (white) 1.7mg, (brown) > 5.96mg wild-rice • Ground spices (dried): paprika 4.33mg > cocoa 7.5mg (coffee contains just 0.01mg) • Nuts/Seeds (dried): hazelnuts 2.2mg; > pumpkin-seeds 7.46mg; • Fish: salmon 0.42mg > sardines 3.1mg; • Animal products: parmesan cheese 6.5mg; beef 3.91-8.2mg; lamb 8.72-10.0mg; veal liver; 12.0mg; • Oysters: 11 -91mg; A more detailed list is available in the web version of this article at www.districtgazette.com.au. It’s easy to see why the elderly who tend to eat less, and those vegans/vegetarians, or pregnant/nursing mothers who don’t plan meal composition well, risk zinc deficiency. The same holds true for non-vegetarians who eat poorly. You can supplement, but this has its own issues. Eating good food is the best way of getting your zinc. If you have any health issues and would like to know how diet may help, please give the clinic a call.

I’m not going to lie, I’m very excited about the sunshine and the beautiful Spring days we’ve been enjoying of late. Despite our cautious ‘covid’ ways - it’s refreshing to see people out and about enjoying the sunshine, supporting local businesses while adhering to safe guidelines and recommendations. Like many, I’ve spent a few days in the garden - while not a ‘green’ thumb there’s something to be said about a neat and inviting garden, especially at this time of the year. I could sit in the garden, eyes closed listening to nature and it’s surrounds for hours. It’s a great way to ‘reset’ and ‘refocus’. And so is reading this latest edition of ‘Your Community News’. We have plenty of light reading this month, why not find yourself a nice spot in the garden with a cuppa and your favourite local paper! ‘Yesterday is heavy, learn to put it down’. Enjoy Your Community News.
