2021 DamFest Cancelled We all know how tough things have been over the last couple of months. The DamFest 2021 Organising Committee have worked hard to create an exciting and COVID safe event for 2021. Sadly, they have come to the realisation that, under the current situation, there is no way they can present the community with an event that could ensure the safety and wellbeing of all who might attend. Even if restrictions were lifted by the end of October, the guidelines would make the logistics of presenting an event like DamFest untenable. The DamFest Organising Committee would like to take this opportunity to thank their sponsors and supporters, Allam Homes, TRN Silverdale Ridge and Wollondilly Shire Council for their ongoing support and they look forward to working with them in the future. They would also like to thank everyone for sharing DamFest with the wider community over the last 15 years. Bring on DamFest 2022! v DamFest returns in 2022 | Image/Article: Warragamba DamFest

Pastor’s Corner I have a very dear friend aged in her late eighties, named Margaret. Recently, Margaret has been diagnosed as having some ‘loss of memory’. The diagnosis brings with it some loss of independence. Whilst she remains in her home, there are several restrictions, including no longer is she allowed to drive, someone coming to do her shopping for her, and of course her family is making decisions for her about her overall care and welfare. All these changes are overwhelming and painful to Margaret. The dictionary defines independence as “freedom from outside control or support: the state of being independent”. In some ways, this is a strange word because we are never able to be completely free from outside control. During this period of the pandemic, government authorities at both State and Federal levels have been exercising their control over our daily lives by imposing various forms of restrictions. Whilst none of us enjoy these restrictions, surely, they are designed for the community’s overall wellbeing and safety. There are choices too that we face, that is part of being independent. One of them is whether to be vaccinated or to not be vaccinated? It is an individual’s choice to make, but it does affect other people. Independence may involve “freedom from outside control”, but it does not set you free, from having to make choices. Jesus said to the people who believed in him, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:31 -32 NLT). Jesus was talking about the truth, which is that God loves us, and that Jesus came to earth to pay the price, to buy back our freedom, from the things that we do wrong. Whether to follow Jesus and to obey his teachings is a matter of our choice. My friend Margaret struggles with her loss of some independence, but she too has choices. A long time ago, she chose to surrender her heart and to follow Jesus, and because of that decision, she has been set free. My prayer is that you too, may be set free, by the love of Jesus. Lockdown has meant I have noticed more things that are broken. It has also given me more time to fix them. Leaking taps, broken lights and a jammed door are all on the list. My wife, Beth, would love a few more of them to be ticked off the list! I feel these are within my power to achieve. There are problems that are much bigger of course. Relationships that need mending, businesses that are barely afloat and those who are sick with the virus that need healing. If only we could fix the big problems in life. The current lockdown has been humbling. Even with our vaccines, strict lockdowns and social disengagement, the virus has continued to spread. If only we had the power to fix the pandemic! When Jesus came, he clearly had power to fix anything. His power was even over death itself. While it is a very natural thing to want to fix everything around us, we need to see that God is the one who needs to fix us and the world around us. He has promised that one day he will do exactly that. He is the one who fixes our relationship with him through Jesus and who will ultimately fix everything in our world. The fact that we see everything so broken is a reminder that God is the only one who can ultimately fix it all. Online services at 9:30am and 5:00pm, just go to tiny.cc/youtubegracewest

Back to Nature With Greater Sydney in lockdown, many people have taken to walking around the community for their daily exercise routines. People are discovering walking tracks and trails right in their own backyard that they never knew about. Local resident Leonie Black has started ‘Wollondilly Nature Walks’, a group to share these amazing outdoor destinations when we’re out and about. The Facebook group began just last month. It already boasts 2,400 members after growing from 1,500 in just the first day alone. “I was looking for some new places to explore with my kids and I asked on another local group for others to share their favourite nature walks in the area. Someone asked if there was a group for it, there wasn’t, so I made one. “I’m so glad I did. There are so many places I didn’t know of that are now being shared and talked about. There are members sharing their own handy hints and directions, first aid information and general inspiration to get out and explore” said Leonie to the Mulgoa Valley Gazette. Such was the interest of the group, Leonie soon started another. “Because of the interest and interaction in the Wollondilly Nature Walks group, I have since created a group for the Southern Highlands Nature Walks as well” she stated. There’s no doubt we are spoilt for places to visit in the Wollondilly Shire. Leonie has a favorite place she has already shared. “My favourite walk is from the Potholes at Charlie’s Point Road down to Mermaids. The walk along the water is beautiful. There are little cave areas that my kids love and climbing among the rocks is so much fun. There is also an easier, faster walk up through the bush and at this time of year our native trees and flowers are a stunning sight to see” Leonie smiled. If you would like to join the group, search ‘Wollondilly Nature Walks’ on Facebook. Once you are a member, you can share your favourite places to explore or other relevant information. “Remember that many of these places can have cultural significance, so we should always remain respectful wherever we go. Take out everything you take in and do no harm while you are there” she ended. r The beauty that Wollondilly Shire has the offer | Image: Leonie Black

Local Community Bank Celebrates 10 Years
ELECTRICAL & SOLAR SOLUTIONS
This month, Community Bank Picton and District celebrates its tenth birthday on Wednesday 13 October 2021. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the Picton branch is celebrating its birthday by supporting local business with the ‘Dilly Rocks’ initiative on Facebook. “Four local cafes will provide a free coffee on us to the first ten Bendigo Bank customers who present their Bendigo Bank credit or debit card on Wednesday 13 October,” said Branch Manager, Belinda Dyson. The participating cafes are Picton Social, Where Ya Bean, Off the Rails and Mac’s Country Cafe at Wilton. Dilly Rocks is a fast-growing community initiative helping to keep kids active and connected during lockdown. Several painted ‘Happy Birthday Bendigo Bank’ Dilly Rocks will be placed around the community. If you find one, and you are under the age of ten, you can present your rock at Community Bank Picton for a free gift. “A branch celebration will be postponed until COVID restrictions have lifted and then we will welcome all our customers and supporters to assist us in celebrating our 10 years of service to the community” Belinda added. Bendigo Bank has over 300 Community Bank branches who not only provide banking and financial services, but they also have a unique point of difference – they share their profit with their community. To date more than $250 million has been pumped back into Australian communities by Community Bank branches. Their other point of difference is their customer service, which makes them stand out amongst competitors who are leaning towards a more online and machine-based approach. The branch also has a Mobile Lender to assist serve the community in a more flexible working environment. In the last year Community Bank Picton has financially supported the Picton Chamber Golf Day, Illuminate Wollondilly - The Festival of Art and Light, Wollondilly Shire Council’s Gardening Competition and three defibrillators for community organisations. “After a 10-year career break, I wished to work for a bank that gave back to its community and did not feed off it. The Board were also a big part of why I chose to work for the Community Bank in Picton. They are all volunteers, and it takes a lot of time, energy and effort to ensure the branch meets all its obligations to regulators, the Bank and our loyal customers” ended Belinda. The branch is open Monday to Friday from 9:30am to 4:00pm at 9-13 Margaret Street, Picton. r Our local branch | Image: Community Bank Picton and District

Warradale FC Thrives in 2021 Despite the premature ending to the 2021 season due to the pandemic, soccer is most definitely alive and well in Wollondilly, with Warradale FC having one of their biggest seasons yet. Warradale FC had 242 players registered this season, with 162 junior and 80 senior players making up 23 teams. This represented an increase in registration numbers of 25% from last year! “We were expecting an increase in playing numbers from last year, but not the overwhelming increase. This presented an exciting challenge to our club. We put this fantastic result down to not only our successful summer soccer competition ran in 2020, but also due to our amazing committee who have worked tirelessly over the years to provide a great club for kids and adults to choose to play football at” said John Letby, President of Warradale FC. The local club had many highlights this season. This included their Under 14 Division 3 Boys team undefeated and sitting in 2nd place at the time of season cancellation, the All-Age Ladies playing their 4th consecutive year and remaining very competitive, an opportunity for their juniors to be involved in the Western Sydney Wanderers match day experience, a social day for their members at home involving inflatable amusements, face painting and Senior Mens football and support from parents and senior players who volunteered their time complying with COVID protocols. They would like to wish Committee Member and Life Member Neville Slender all the best for the future, as he has moved away from the area. “We wish to thank Neville and his family for all their hard work and selfless work over the years at Warradale FC” stated John. “The environment Warradale FC creates is a very social and family orientated atmosphere and is reflective of our unique community. Everyone involved, from players to parents, coaches and committee members all contribute to this atmosphere and should be proud of being a part of our club” he ended. r Western Sydney Wanderers Match Day experience at Bankwest Stadium Parramatta Saturday 8th May 2021. Keeping Children Safe Online: Who Are They Talking to? In a time when social distancing is key to addressing the evolving public health issue of COVID-19, the internet allows children to learn, connect and create. However, going online is not risk-free. This month, we continue our three-part series on keeping children safe online. On the 3rd of September, ten additional police officers joined the Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad to address a rise in online sex crimes against children. In a statement released by the NSW Police, Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad Commander Detective Superintendent Jayne Doherty attributed this concerning trend to children spending additional time at home online unsupervised. “The best tool to ensure your child’s safety is you. Make sure they know they can tell you about anything that makes them uncomfortable and that any app, game or social media platform where they speak to other people can put them at risk,” Det Supt Doherty said. Many seemingly innocuous apps and games include chat functions which allow anyone in the world to contact your child. Before installing any app or game, do your research and ensure you maximise privacy settings. The Carly Ryan Foundation provides detailed, up-to-date information for parents on specific apps and games. These guides include step-by-step instructions on how to operate configure privacy settings on the apps. These free fact sheets can be downloaded from carlyryanfoundation.com. In addition to maximising privacy settings on apps, you need to supervise children when they access the internet. It is best to always supervise small children (under 5 years old) physically when they use internet-enabled devices. Primary aged school children should be encouraged to ask you to access devices, and you need to know where they are and what they are doing when they log on onto the web. I highly discourage allowing primary aged school children to access the internet in their bedroom with the door closed. As children grow older, regular conversations about online safety continue to be essential. For more information, visit the eSafety Commissioner’s website on https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents.

Dilly Rocks is a local rock painting group taking the community by storm. The group was formed in Wollondilly and has been very popular amongst families during lockdown. The group was started in March this year by Sharon Robertson and Tia Veech on Facebook. With over 1,400 members and growing, Agnes, Phi and Julie have been added as much needed support. “We had been seeing lots of ideas to get communities involved safely during this current health crisis and being frustrated artists needing an outlet painting rocks appeals. It is an all-inclusive activity that any person, regardless of age and ability can join in,” said Tia. “We encourage getting the kids involved, painting along with hiding rocks which gets them looking at their environment whilst out walking and off devices” she continued. Amazingly, the group had one of their member’s painted rocks featured in a story on The Project on Channel Ten recently. The current restrictions have meant that we have been limited with travel and the group has been a welcome surprise for people out doing their exercise. “It’s important while we all are limited to where we can go and what we can do to have something to look forward to. People of all ages have been painting, finding, and hiding rocks. There have been many stories of smiles and improved mental health for members on their daily walks” Tia relayed. “We love seeing the photos of the rock artists, where they are posting, and everyone gets a huge kick out of their rocks being found and re-hid. We are encouraging and reinforcing the ideas of kindness, giving and gratitude” she continued. Prior to lockdown, the group ran some free painting workshops in Thirlmere. They hope to have further activities soon including monthly prizes from sponsors and themed ideas. r

Latest @ Luddenham by Wayne Willmington On the 1st of October 1971, Charlie and Maria Cambareri moved their family to Luddenham purchasing the Sales General Store on the corner of Adams and Northern Road. Charlie continued with his normal job working in the shop after hours and Maria loved working in their farm growing vegetables to sell in the shop in her free time. In 1978, they opened the new brick shop, which was a new level of shopping and service to the area. In 2008, they started the next stage by building the IGA Store and when that was finished work, started on the Service Station. Sadly, Maria did not get to see the building finished as she passed away on the 5th of May 2009. The new service station opened in October 2009. I would like to thank the Cambareri Family for 50 years of service in Luddenham. The Luddenham Progress Association has been unhappy with the State Planning Partnerships plans for Luddenham Village and the amount of Green Open Space in Luddenham. We are pleased to advise that they will in October for a short period open consultation on the Luddenham Village visioning process and supporting document. These will have a separate engagement process which is being developed. Also, for the green areas they will be including an updated acquisition map for the open network as well as an open space needs study. Thanks to Penrith City Council for installing a new cricket practice wicket in Sales Park. The new concrete and synthetic turf wicket are welcomed by all the local cricket players. Transport for NSW has received Federal and State government approval to construct the M12 Motorway. Early works for the project have now commenced and will continue for around six months, with the main construction works. Work

will include a site compound set up at 2778 The Northern Road. Utility relocation work on Luddenham Road will involve excavating trenches, installing conduits, backfill, pulling cables, an electrical outage to make electrical connections and removal of redundant overhead lines. Also, at Elizabeth Drive (in front of the airport site) which will result in a reduced speed limit from 80km to 60km and the placement of concrete barriers to protect both workers and motorists. Western Sydney Airport Update: Construction of the 3.7km runway and rapid-exit taxiways will begin in 2022, after the contract to design and build the airfield was awarded to the CPB Contractors and ACCIONA joint venture following a competitive procurement process. Western Sydney Airport CEO Simon Hickey said the efficient airfield design, enabled by the latest technology, will reduce taxi times, preventing delays on the tarmac that can be frustrating for passengers and costly for airlines.

Time to Hang Up the Knives Much loved local business, Mulgoa Spitroast Professionals has closed after 32 years of serving the local community. Owners Neil and Sue Jeffries started the business in 1989 as a franchise and it was known as Australian Spitroast Professionals. Franchise owners at the time included well-known Australian chef Bernard King who owned the neighbouring Blue Mountains business. Leaving the franchise in 1999, it became Mulgoa Spitroast Professionals. “We made the decision to close the business recently, for a couple of reasons. COVID has changed the way that people could get together and celebrate occasions being one. Along with after giving up every weekend for 32 years was another good reason to say it’s now time to slow down a bit and start to enjoy some freedom and not be so committed to catering every weekend” said Sue Jeffries, owner of Mulgoa Spitroast Professionals. The business’ specialty was spitroast buffet catering, which allowed them to cook large cuts of meat. Their beef and pig could feed up to 150 people from one spit. The unique setup allowed them to carve directly from the spit to the plate, keeping the food hot the entire time. “One of the best things about having this type of business was it involved the family, which gave our kids a great start to the working world and a sense of achievement” she replied. There were many highlights over the past three decades. “We catered for 770 hungry RAAF people at Richmond RAAF Base in a hangar. Sydney Jeep Club Jamberoo at Rydal was an amazing weekend feeding 800 plus guests. Ray Hadley’s 30 Years in Radio Celebration with all the stars was a great function. We also enjoyed the Scottish Highlands event at Bundanoon for the past 10 years” Sue reflected. “The biggest highlight was the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. We catered for the NSW Police Force, who also came from all over Australia for security at the Games. We fed 100 police for 21 days that stayed at Winbourne in Mulgoa. They later presented us with a police plaque, signed shirt and all the Olympic pins. We have them framed and they hang proudly at home. It was an amazing time and something that we will never forget” ended Sue. r Feature Article [Cover] A family affair [Above] Neil Jeffries | Images: Alicia Hollier

Stay Safe This Snake Season With Spring now upon us, it is also snake season. Snakes are more visible in the warmer weather and can be seen when we’re out and about. Sean Cade of Australian Snake Catchers has shared some tips on how to stay safe during this period. Sean began his professional reptile removal service business 15 years ago and together with his partner Freya, have successfully removed many venomous and non-venomous snakes. “Typically, the snake season is Spring and Summer (September to March) each year. However, on warm days they will emerge throughout the year. Snakes don’t hibernate. They experience brumation, which means that they have sporadic bursts of activity” explained Sean. If you encounter a snake, Sean has this important information for us. “Snakes are purely defensive creatures by nature. If they are given an opportunity to escape a situation or retreat, they will prefer this option. Snakes will feel threatened by humans that get too close as we are seen as large predators in their view. “If you encounter a snake, do not approach them. Keep kids and pets away. Back away slowly whilst keeping your eyes on the snake. Most importantly, do not attempt to catch or kill
them. 80 to 90% of people are bitten trying to catch or kill a snake” he said. There are also steps to take to ensure your home is safe and minimized of encounters. “Snakes enter premises for food and shelter. Keep rubbish and debris to a minimum and your yard and grass tidy. Don’t put pet water bowls near doorways. Firewood piles should be kept away from the house and on a pallet, if possible. If the snake is in or around your home, call a licensed professional” Sean stated. There are several species of venomous and non-venomous snakes that can be found in Western Sydney. Venomous includes the Eastern Brown Snake, Death Adder, Red Bellied Black Snake, Yellow Faced Whip Snake, Marsh Snake and Golden Crowned Snake. In cooler climates, you’ll find the Eastern Tiger Snake and Highlands Copperhead. Non-venomous include the Common Tree Snake and Diamond Python. For more information about Australian Snake Catchers, visit them on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/ australiansnakecatchers/. You can also contact Sean on 0410 761575 and Freya on 0452 492836.

Can Good Diet Benefit Migraine and Regular Headache? Migraines are often triggered by something. In a study by Kelman (2007) patients listed 15 frequent migraine triggers. Clearly, the majority of these are diet/lifestyle related factors, which means we can do something about them. 7 of 15 factors can be directly or indirectly influenced by diet. Food, not eating and alcohol intake are dietary choices. Sleep disturbances (think zinc insufficiency), neck-pain, stress-perception, and hormonal factors can be influenced to varying degrees by diet. Four factors: smoking, exercise, sexual activity, and sleeping late, are clearly lifestyle choices. Only 4 factors, weather, perfumes/ odours, lights, and heat are environmental, yet these too could be controlled/avoided. To illustrate the powerful effect of diet on migraine and headache symptoms, let’s review the case of a 39-year-old woman who attended the clinic suffering 2.5 days of migraineheadaches, plus 4.5 days of non-migraine headaches weekly. She was struggling to work and regularly taking Maxalt (rizatriptan), Nurofen, Valium, and aspirin, along with MigraineCare (a nutritional supplement) to deal with symptoms. The patient consumed alcohol regularly, had considerable gastrointestinal issues, and extremely painful and tight muscles,
12 October 2021 www.mulgoagazette.com.au
yet was fit and exercised vigorously daily. Note: although exercise can reduce migraine frequency, intensity, and duration, in a cruel twist, exercise can promote non-migraine headaches, and increase symptoms of muscle-pain and tightness, especially if diet is inadequate. The patient wanted to undertake only dietary change and didn’t want any deeper remedial therapy (although this would have been beneficial) as she was particularly sensitive to any type of pain. Thus, this case is an excellent example of the large influence simple diet/lifestyle changes ‘by themselves’ can have on headache and migraine symptoms. We analysed the patient’s current dietary pattern via diet diary, identified shortcomings, then prescribed a healthful eating pattern, plus key dietary supplements. The patient agreed to abstain from alcohol, and moderated exercise to reasonable levels. At a follow up appointment after 5 months on the new dietary protocol, the patient indicated that she had suffered no migraines and just one regular headache and required no medications at any time in the previous month. Her muscle pain and tightness had improved significantly as had gastrointestinal symptoms.
Get Ready this Bush Fire Season
With the fire season upon us this month, rural fire brigades across the state are ready and waiting to keep us all safe. It’s also important to make sure that you have a fire plan in place. Silverdale RFB Captain Barbara Jolley has shared some valuable information to be fire ready. The fire season begins on 1st October 2021 and ends March 2022. However, dates can be changed if fire conditions worsen. “Have a fire plan which every member of the family is aware of, which includes whether you will stay and defend or leave early. This plan also needs to include what you will take and where you will go” said Captain Barbara. “There is a lot of information on the NSW RFS website on how to prepare your home. Suggestions are to keep leaf litter out of gutters, keep lawns moved and wood piles away from home, and remove overhanging trees from home and garage. Also have hoses that reach to every corner of your property and have a water source like a tank or pool. Gutter guards and roof sprinklers are recommended if you live close to bush interface” she explained. This year, all members of the RFS were issued with new lighter helmets. From donations, Silverdale RFB were able to purchase additional radios. They also have a new Category 9 fire vehicle which is a smaller truck, making it a bit more flexible and easier to move around on fire ground. “Before the 2019/2020 fires, we had about 25 members. Since then, we have gained about 11 very keen members who have qualified as fire fighters, and these new members have already proven to be a great asset to the brigade” stated Captain Barbara. Due to COVID restrictions, their community events and interactions have not been able to occur. However, they hope that these will be returning to normal soon once restrictions are lifted. If you would like to join Silverdale RFB or would like more information, find them on Facebook.

PAWS A WHILE
Article Written + Submitted by: Camille Brandt from Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital A: 49 Wentworth Rd, Orchard Hills P: 4736 2027
Thank You to Our Wonderful Clients Camille and the staff at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital would like to say a huge thank you to our wonderful clients for their understanding and support during the COVID-19 lockdowns. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we have been performing contactless consultations – this means that a nurse meets you in the carpark and collects your pet, then takes them inside to be seen by the veterinarian, while you wait in the carpark. This is done to accommodate for social distancing and to ensure that we remain safe and operating during the pandemic. We understand that it is not ideal to hand over your beloved pet, whether they are unwell or just for a routine checkup, but we are so grateful that you trust us to look after them and provide the care that they require. We want you to know that your pets are being loved and comforted by all members of staff during their visits. We feel so lucky to be able to see and cuddle so many cats, dogs, and rabbits! You may have experienced some extended wait times during the pandemic, but we would love to share with you what is happening behind closed doors! We have done so many things, including delivering a litter of Boxer puppies in an emergency caesarean, triaging sick patients, vaccinating, and microchipping litters of kittens and puppies, various orthopaedic surgeries, helping a cheeky Australian Shepherd vomit up a couple of socks, the list goes on! We are so thankful that we have been able to remain open and available to look after your pets during these unprecedented times. We can’t wait for this all to be over and to be able to see all of your faces again! Until then, we will continue to look after your pets all while being as safe as possible.

October brings with it sun filled days, picnics and ‘friend bubbles’. As vaccination rates climb, so do the hopes of many in anticipation of the much talked about ‘Freedom Day’. After 3 long months of lockdown it seems that we are on the cusp of some sort of ‘normality’. While life will never truly return to what was, this process and time has helped prepare us all for living ‘with’ Covid. Some have witnessed heartbreak and loss during these tough times while others have had to learn to pivot and adapt to changing times; all of us together have had to adopt new ways. We thank our loyal advertisers and readers for continuing to support us through these challenging times of late. It’s your support that has kept us in over 27,000 letterboxes across 20 suburbs and 83,000 readers! By supporting our advertisers, you support us! And for this, we THANK you. Time to catch up on all the latest happenings in Your Community News. Accept what is, let go of what was and have faith in what will be.
