Shire Council. Friends from Tahmoor Shed, Oakdale Shed and Camden Shed were there to lend their support and many local community members visited. Terry Atkins says “Thank you to all our supporters. Having the shed so close to town makes it easy and convenient for members to attend. But just because we have a fancy shed dosn’t mean we won’t be helping out in the community as we have in the past. We are growing week by week and every new member brings new skills. Come along and join us.” Terry also said “We were saddened by the death of Peter Gilham the same weekend. Peter had been a long time member and will be greatly missed by us as well as his family, friends and the whole community”. The group meet every Friday in the shed. Henry Charles Pearson
Blue Mountains Honey, Not Without Spice and Field to Feast have decided to combine efforts with the Warragamba Creative Traders Market, to continue bringing quality fresh produce and gourmet food to the locals in our region. Genevieve from Blue Mountains Honey will no doubt whip up a batch of her superb honey bread and other tasty treats from the hive. Field to Feast will bring what’s available in fresh produce from their rain savaged farm along with free range eggs and local smallgoods. Whilst Not Without Spice has the answer to that dinner dilemma with their convenient spice mixes and rubs to give your meals a gourmet twist. We look forward to seeing you on the day.

Lost My Appetite: The Hunger Games Rated M Recently, I saw the movie, The Hunger Games. The novel by author Suzanne Collins was published by Scholastic, a well-known publisher to school children, and aimed by the publisher at ages 9 +. This movie is the first of a trilogy, so you’re bound to hear more. While others loved it, I felt disturbed. Many movies, like Lord of the Rings, are full of bloodshed. So why am I disturbed? Because defending middle earth from orcs bent on wiping out the race of men seems quite different from children slaughtering other children because The Hunger Games’ arbitrary rules require only one survivor. The story of The Hunger Games is set centuries into the future. ‘The Capital’ oppresses the 12 districts that provide them their food and resources. To keep them subjugated, ‘The Capital’ requires each of the 12 districts to annually present to them a boy and a girl (called ‘Tributes’) to fight to the death in ‘The Hunger Games’. Only one child of the 24 can survive. The heroine is Katniss, a 16 year old from District 12. She volunteers
for the games in place of her younger sister. By the movie’s end, all the children except two are killed, mostly at each other’s hands. The viewer sees most of the deaths. Even the ‘goodies’ kill other kids. The movie intentionally merges two elements of our modern television culture. It mixes the ‘Reality TV’ phenomenon, with its voyeurism, shallowness, and placing contestants in morally questionable situations, with the increasingly uninhibited media depictions of violence. The movie critiques the grotesque fascination of being entertained by other’s pain. It is the ‘The Truman Show’ with hatchets. True to the equality of our age, most of the girls are just as violent as their male counterparts. The whole set up of the Hunger Games requires the children to be selfish. Self-survival is the one not negotiable. This is the most grubby thing about the movie. Except for the alliances Katniss forges between herself and Rue, and later Peeta, all the alliances are pragmatic and strategic ‘marriages of convenience’, entered so the child can survive a little longer. Is that what life is about? A giant game of monopoly where only one
can win? Is only the ultimate survivor’s life worth anything? Is that appropriate for 9 year olds? The only uplifting feature of the movie is Katniss’ self-sacrifice for the sake of her sister, her resilience, and her genuine care for Rue and Peeta. As we come up to ANZAC Day, we remind ourselves that we do not glory in the needless violence that ‘The Hunger Games’ represent, but we solemnly remember the self-sacrifice that allows us to live. Such self-sacrifice is epitomized in the love of Jesus: ‘Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.’ (John 15:13 NIV). Holy Family School On Friday 2 March, a ceremony was held at Holy Family Primary, to bless the $2.65 million new and refurbished learning spaces funded by the Australian Government’s Building the Education Revolution program. Monsignor Robert McGuckin VG EV represented Bishop Anthony Fisher OP and was assisted by parish priest Fr Zvonimir Gavranovic in blessing the newly constructed multipurpose hall and renovated learning spaces. Special guests included the foundation principal of Holy Family, Sr Patty Andrew OSU; Sr Venera Nicolosi OSU from the Ursuline Sisters; Helen O’Connor, a foundation member of staff; Kevin Morrison and Janice Ferberg from the NSW Catholic Education Commission, Hermann Keller from Thomson Adsett Architects and Jeff Donnelly from Meridian Constructions, who worked on the project, as well as principals from neighbouring Catholic schools.
Monsignor Robert reminded students of the foundations being instilled through their Catholic education. ‘Jesus is the foundation on which we build our lives,’ said Monsignor Robert. ‘These facilities will help you grow as good members of your family, school, parish and the w h o l e community - use them well and enjoy your learning.’ Executive director of schools, Greg Whitby, thanked the Australian Government for investing in education and said that the parish was particularly dear to his heart.‘I have a special connection to the Holy Family parish because my parents were parishioners here and were very involved in the planning of this school,’ said Greg. ‘Make sure you value your education and thank your teachers for working so hard to provide the best learning

Challenging Prostrate Cancer with table tennis Christ Church @ The College held its third annual Table Tennis competition on 24th March and word is spreading about the level of this competition. 'We've had to split the comp into two divisions now' said the minister of Christ Church, Mark Bonnici. 'Each competition draws better players and the competition is becoming fierce'. The undefeated champion David Page took out the first prize yet again. Mark Bonnici is putting out a challenge to local Penrith players to be part of this comp to challenge the three-year reigning champion. "David is very competitive and also the oldest player in the comp. He is very hard to beat". The church group meets in the Lighthouse Theatre at Penrith Anglican College and the gymnasium has eight tables, so the competition is split to accommodate the different levels of competitors. This year's competition was also part of a cluster of events at Christ Church @ The College to raise money and awareness for the Prostate Cancer Foundation. Mark says “We believe that as a church it is important to raise awareness of valuable charities and organisations who provide import to the broader community.” For more information about the next Table Tennis competition you can contact Mark on 0425 272 286. RYPEN -A WINNER WITH YOUNG PEOPLE Ask any young person who has participated at RYPEN and they'll quickly tell you ‘what a great time they had and what a difference it’s made to their personal development.’ RYPEN or Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment is aimed at young people aged between 14 and 16 years in school years 8 to 10, who show some qualities of decency, courage, persistence, sincerity and application in everyday life, and who deserve further development. The principle aim of the program is to share a series of ideas, problems and social experiences with young people which will assist them in forming their own values and moral standards, and to broaden their horizons culturally, socially and academically. Significantly, RYPEN is applicable for most young people not for the outstanding few. RYPEN is an intensive program, consisting of plenary sessions, workshops and sport and entertainment activities. Participants will be given an opportunity to learn from achievers in the worlds of business, sport and entertainment. Presenters will speak at keynote sessions and workshops and share their experiences with participants, while emphasizing the need to work hard and stay focused. At the same time, participants are interacting with peers from different backgrounds and

improving their teamwork skills. All this is done in an informal atmosphere, where questions and debates are encouraged. The motto of RYPEN, is “the Cultivation of Youth”. If you think a young person has qualities worth developing then they are suitable for RYPEN. The next RYPEN camp is Friday 25th to Sunday 27th May 2012.
