Business Awards The 2010 Local Business Awards were recently held for the Penrith and Camden/Wollondilly areas. Our area was very well represented with a number of local businesses and advertisers making the finals.

Four local businesses are also finalists in the upcoming 2010 Business Achiever Awards and the winners will be announced in September.

Wallacia Public School students are very excited to be moving into their new library, built under the Building the Education Revolution. There is a brand new communications system with a smart board and furniture but no books. The old library was damaged by fire a few weeks again and about half of the books have been smoke damaged.

On election day, 21st August, the School P&C will be holding a BBQ with stalls, cakes and raffles to raise funds for the purchase of new books for the library.

Government & God “Many forms of Government have been tried, and will be tried in this world of sin and woe. No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise.

Indeed, it has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.” (Winston Churchill) For many reasons, we are blessed to live in Australia. We get to be part of a process that chooses our Government. We have a system of checks and balances. So when a government becomes unpopular, we have an alternative. We give one government three or four years. If they did a good enough job, they will get another go around. If not, they’re out. Our courts are independent enough of our parliaments to provide a meaningful review of our statutes. Our media is independent enough to publicise government scandals as well as triumphs. We are a wealthy enough country to pay politicians and public officials a decent wage, so they don’t have to become dependent on bribery.

As Churchill pointed out, at the heart of democracy is a recognition of sin. Sin is our rejection of God and his word. And the bible says that sin is universal and all pervading. When God looked at the people he created he saw with sadness that sin had made

MOPS – Mothers Of Preschoolers MOPS offers a caring, accepting atmosphere in which mums have an opportunity to develop friendships, share concerns, explore areas of creativity and enjoy great morning teas.

Mums also benefit from teaching on a wide range of matters relevant to mothering.

MOPS provides time out for mothers while children have a separate fun program called Moppets. Moppet children are lovingly cared for in an adjoining room (and outside if weather permits) by a dedicated team of carers. Children participate in planned activities suited to their skills and age group.

This group meets on the last Wednesday of the month in Warragamba Anglican Church. Special guest on 25th August is Craig Jennings speaking on the Samaritan’s Purse, which is the system for filling Christmas boxes.

Everyone is welcome, with or without children.

Cost is $5 to cover morning tea and craft material.

Warragamba Artstart

Trash & Treasure will be held at Warragamba Anglican Church Saturday 28th August 9am – 2pm Donations still required. If you have any items you would like to donate please call 4774 1925.

The aim of the Warragamba Artstart Program was for young people living in the Warragamba area to find and capture local significant places of interest through a camera lens. This helped young people identify and communicate what the community means to them. The young people worked with a professional photographer who helped them with the technical aspects of photography.

Calendars and Postcards have been created with the individual photographs portrayed and are currently being distributed through various Tourist Information Centres, Wollondilly Shire Council, Sydney Catchment Authority, and local businesses.

Inspiration was drawn from local surrounds including places of significance, historical sites, cultural sites, nature and the people of the area.

Young people were able to express a sense of pride in their community – helping to build on existing relationships and raising the profile of young people living in the Warragamba area.

Men’s Breakfast Warragamba Baptist Church is holding their annual Men’s Breakfast on Saturday 4th September at 8am at the Church in Nineteenth Street.

All the men of the area are invited to come along and enjoy a delicious breakfast followed by a musical program presented by Dawn Goodfellow.

Dawn has performed on radio, around Australia and overseas over many years. She sings a variety of music styles including country. We know the men will enjoy her musical program.

There is no charge for this event.

40 Fined In Covert Surveillance Of Sydney’s Drinking Catchment NSW Minister for Water Phil Costa said 38 people and two corporations were fined in the first 12 months of new covert camera trial and surveillance operations after they were caught illegally accessing restricted drinking catchment lands or polluting waterways.

“These people might think their actions are harmless but they could be putting drinking supplies of more than 4.5 million people at risk,” Minister Costa said.

“We have put in place a network of covert cameras camouflaged in locations across the drinking water catchments to capture images which are then sent back to compliance officers at Sydney Catchment Authority headquarters.

“The restricted lands, or Special Areas, form a 3,700 square kilometre pristine buffer zone around our water supplies, protecting them by stopping contaminants and nutrients from washing into water storages,” Minister Costa said.

“When this buffer zone is penetrated by people engaging in illegal activity, the integrity of Sydney’s drinking supplies can come under threat.”

“We are fortunate to have so many beautiful parks and bushwalking tracks in the local area for people to take advantage of - there are no excuses for trespassing in the drinking catchment,” the Member for Mulgoa, Diane Beamer said.

Illegal entry and activities such as trail bike riding, horse riding and four wheel driving in these areas damages vegetation, causes erosion and can have a negative impact on water quality and biodiversity.

Bushwalking, mountain bike riding, camping, hunting, fishing and swimming are also illegal in prohibited access areas, as these activities can impact upon water quality.

Illegal dumping, clearing vegetation illegally, drug cultivation and polluting waterways can also have a negative impact on drinking water quality.

Dams play a vital role in the NSW Government’s plan to secure Sydney’s water supplies for the future alongside key initiatives including recycling, desalination and water efficiency.

Holy Family School Celebrates Grandparents Day On Friday 6th August Holy Family School celebrated its annual Grandparents Day. This is a day that celebrates the important contribution that grandparents play in the lives of their families and in particular the lives of the children of Holy Family School.

Once again we had a magnificent day and great roll up of parents and grandparents. More than 600 guests enjoyed a celebration of the Eucharist, a brunch provided by our parents and a series of concert items prepared and performed by the students and staff.

This day again highlighted the strong community involvement and commitment to our school from our parent group. Our Parent Rep Group was instrumental in the organisation of the brunch, a group of Stage 3 parents organised and ran a drinks stall to raise funds for the upcoming Canberra excursion and our parent group donated the biscuits, cakes, sandwiches and savouries for the brunch.

Also it again showed the strength of our relationship with our neighbouring schools with some of the hospitality students from Caroline Chisholm College assisting with service of the brunch to our guests. The work of these girls and the cooperation we have with Caroline Chisholm College helps to make this day run smoothly.

On behalf of the school community I would like to express my thanks to all those who made a contribution to the day. Grandparents Day at Holy Family School is a fantastic day full of great laughs and memories.

Stephen was diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy in 1995. This disease slowly deteriorates the muscles in the body eventually forcing the suffering into a wheelchair. Stephen uses an electric scooter and a manual wheelchair to maintain independence, however, his condition has deteriorated further in the past year and he is no longer able to use his manual wheelchair without assistance.

Stephen is only 39 years of age with 2 young children, aged 3 and 9, he values his independence immensely.
