New Girl Guides and Leaders wanted Girl Guides is a great organisation for girls who love making friends, having fun and developing new skills. The Warragamba Girl Guides have vacancies for girls aged 7 to 15. They meet in the Guide hall on Monday or Wednesday evenings and enjoy activities and games which are fun but also teach leadership, teamwork, decision making, a respect for the environment, communication skills and a sense of

community. Outdoor activities are an important part of the Australian Guide programme and the girls have had the opportunity to go camping, sailing, horse riding, rock climbing, flying, swimming, surfing, ice skating as well as campfire cooking and gadget making. The new Southern Cross Ranger unit for girls aged 15 - 18 years old has 4 girls working on their Queen’s Guide award and meets fortnightly. The Guide hall has been renovated with an internal bathroom, new kitchen and storage areas. Many thanks to the parents who have helped but es-

pecially Steve Bloem who has been a wonderful help with the building works and Terry Fraser who has spent many hours painting the hall. 2010 is the ‘Year of The Guide’ celebrating 100 years of Guiding with some great events planned so this is a great time to get involved and help local girls grow into responsible young women. We need a new female, over 18, leader for the girls. No experience is necessary as free training is provided. Please phone Margaret for further details: 4773 8974.

Funding for Local Volunteer Organisations The Federal Member for Fowler, Julia Irwin MP, has welcomed Australian Government funding of $36,000 to local volunteer organisations under the Volunteer Grants 2009 initiative. “The Australian Government’s volunteer grants provide valuable support to our community organisations with funding of between $1,000 and $5,000 available,” Julia Irwin said. “For many local volunteer organisations these grants provide the opportunity to cover the cost of fuel and to purchase equipment such as computers and office equipment, sheds, fire extinguishers, defibrillators, first aid kits, and other items necessary to support the activities of our volunteers. “This funding will ease the financial pressure on non-profit organisations and their volunteers, who make a real and lasting difference in the lives of so many people in our community.” For the full list of successful organisations, please go to http://www.fahcsia.gov.au/sa/volunteers/funding/Pages/volunteer_grant09.aspx Local groups: Holy Family School Parents and

Stay healthy this festive season Hopewood Health Retreat in Wallacia has the enviable reputation as Australia’s premier health retreat and is right here on our doorstep. Hopewood’s approach to healthy living is simple – combine natural, fresh, vegetarian foods with plenty of water, regular gentle exercise, fresh air and relaxation to feel energetic, look your best and perform at your optimum level. To ensure you make the most of the Christmas period and remain healthy and full of energy and vitality, Hopewood provides the following tips. Pre-Christmas preparations The lead up to Christmas and especially the mad last minute rush tends to be quite a stressful time so it’s important that you do all you can to ensure you’re mentally and physically prepared. Be organised and diarise tasks, even the little ones, to ensure you don’t forget anything and avoid the last minute rush. It also means that you have put enough time aside for everything you need to do. Try to maintain a healthy diet and continue to exercise in the weeks leading up to Christmas. Go to bed at a reasonable time to make sure you get sufficient sleep and make time for additional rest and relaxation, even if for only a few minutes a day. Every morning start the day with a glass of freshly squeezed lemon juice with warm water (25% lemon, 75% warm water). By being well-rested and prepared, you give yourself the best opportunity to breeze through the festive season and actually enjoy it. Make the most of Christmas day Christmas Day is all about celebrating and spending time with loved ones – and food! Most of us tend to overindulge on the abundance of Christmas fare spread out before us. Instead of filling up on pre-lunch nibbles and too much champagne or beer, try to save yourself for the delicious

lunch ahead. If you are hosting Christmas lunch, there are a number of healthy recipe options for entertaining such as light dishes and mouth-watering salads. Hopewood’s recipe book, hopewood@home, has great ideas which are perfect for a hot, Christmas Day. Your guests will thank you and you will all feel better at the end of the day. Remember to drink plenty of water, especially if you’re consuming alcohol. Try sipping a glass of mineral water in between each glass of alcohol to ensure you stay hydrated throughout the day. If you do overindulge over Christmas and feel that you need to get yourself back on track, make that New Year’s resolution of a healthier you count by planning a visit to Hopewood. You can celebrate Christmas at Hopewood with a delicious (and very healthy!) vegetarian lunch. For more information see below, visit www.hopewood.com.au or call 4773 8401.

Tough New Graffiti Laws New laws that double penalties for graffiti vandalism and ban juveniles from possessing spray cans have come into force, Attorney General John Hatzistergos said. Mr Hatzistergos said it is now illegal for a juvenile to carry a spray can unless they can prove they had it for a legitimate purpose. The Attorney General had this message for would-be graffiti vandals: “If police catch a juvenile carrying a spray can in a public place, they will have to prove they were using it for school, work or legal art or face six months jail or a $1,100 fine,” he said. “From today, if you get caught defacing property with graffiti, you face the prospect of spending up to a year in jail.” Mr Hatzistergos said the Government has also expanded the offence of supplying spray paint to minors to cover adults who go on to supply to juveniles. The new laws are part of the NSW Government’s coordinated campaign to combat graffiti, which includes clean-up orders, community clean-up

initiatives and new anti- graffiti planning guidelines. “From next year, courts will have the power to order graffiti vandals to pay off their fines by cleaning up graffiti at a rate of $30 per hour,” he said. “We will also launch Australia’s first Graffiti Action Day in May next year – in association with Keep Australia Beautiful.” The Government will also roll out $1 million in annual grants to implement anti-graffiti design for buildings in graffiti hotspots. “ M i n o r building modifications such as covering a wall with vegetation or a graffiti resistant coating denies graffiti vandals a blank canvas,” he said. The top 10 graffiti hotspots earmarked for a grant include Blacktown,

Sutherland Shire, Newcastle, Penrith, Gosford and Wollongong. Mr Hatzistergos said the Government will next year introduce new state planning guidelines to “graffiti proof” new State Government buildings. “We will back this up with a dedicated unit to provide training and expert advice to organisations, including architects, planners and engineers,” he said. The Government is also developing anti-graffiti guidelines with local councils.

Free fill could cost you the Earth Penrith City Council is warning land owners to avoid accepting free fill to raise or level their land as owners may find they are responsible for expensive removal costs and risk fines if the fill is illegal or inappropriate. Penrith City Mayor Kevin Crameri OAM said while the offer may be tempting, land fill can be contaminated and that in many cases a development application must be lodged. “Improper land filling is a serious issue and Penrith City Council is working hard to prevent illegal landfill practices,” Councillor Crameri said. “Often the free fill that is advertised is not clean. It may contain toxic chemicals such as lead or old building materials such as asbestos that could harm your family. “A supplier must have an official validation certificate to certify that the fill is clean. The property owner is often liable for costs if the fill has to be removed or the area rehabilitated and there are also penalties for accepting land fill without Council consent. “Inappropriate fill can also change water flows and cause flooding damage. “Council must place a note on the

property’s title where fill material of unknown source and quantity has been placed without approval. This will alert potential purchasers and could significantly impact on your property’s value. “Suppliers of free fill are looking for residential dumping grounds to avoid paying tipping fees at authorised waste facilities. Tipping fees for a 10tonne truck load of soil and waste without a validation certificate costs about $2,000. To get rid of the fill and avoid fees they will display sale signs, letterbox drop or door knock to find rural landowners willing to accept landfill. “Please check with Penrith City Council on 4732 7777 before you consider putting landfill on your property. This material in the wrong place can damage the environment by polluting waterways, destroying vegetation, contaminating land and causing erosion. And it could cost you the Earth.”

ers and friends. ADFA also has a long history of advocacy work. ADFA focuses on community education about the dangers of asbestos, which can cause asbestosis and deadly mesothelioma even from exposure is to a single fibre of asbestos dust. Our aim is to reduce the number of people exposed to asbestos. Tens of thousands of Australians are expected to be diagnosed with asbestos diseases in the next couple of decades, with home renovators increasingly falling victim. In recent years victims have also included many cases of children being exposed around the home and wives exposed by washing work clothes. ADFA run support groups are for people living with asbestos related diseases and their family members. In February 2010 a new Penrith support group will be launched. These groups also provide information about current medical research, the drugs used in treatment the likely and side effects. ADFA can also provides free counselling from a qualified counsellor for asbestos disease sufferers and their immediate family. Mulgoa PS students entertain seniors The annual Christmas presentation by the students of Mulgoa Public School to the local seniors was very much appreciated yet again. This year the St Clair seniors also came along and they all really enjoyed the lovely singing, especially the traditional carols, Silent Night and Away in a Manger which brought a few tears to their eyes. Jennifer Thompson, the Principal of Mulgoa Public School, said “The children were very touched by the reception from the seniors and were really glad that they learnt these songs since it meant so much to the senior citizens. One of the students even managed to perform the dances with a broken foot - in plaster! We are

Notes from the Mulgoa Progress Association 2009 has been a very full year for the MPA with a lot of challenges for the community but our committee has done an excellent job in support of Penrith City Council to maintain the integrity of the rural environmental plans that have been put in place to preserve the Mulgoa Valley and village area. The pressure to see commercial developments is a fact of life with often no real regard to the repercussions to local residents expectations or the detrimental changes to the environment and historical nature of the area. The hours put in by our committee members are greatly appreciated. This year has been remarkable being the bi centenary of the founding of the Mulgoa Valley as a new European

settlement and identity and was a great day of celebration. I would like to remind Mulgoa residents that this is your association which acts in good faith for the betterment of our wonderful area which is envied by many others. Your individual input is vital to the ongoing viability of this association and it is beneficial to all if you can attend a few meetings each year and for you to have YOUR say. The new committee is: President Peter Harvey, Secretary Kerry Spurrett, Treasurer Penny Hunter, Vice president Richard Smith. Wally Cox, President 2008-’09
