Black Panther seen in Mulgoa

Warragamba Country Markets

Local teenager Luke Kraljevic got a real fright when a black panther ran across his path last weekend. He runs and cycles up to the rock lookout in the national park on a regular basis and is quite convinced the animal was a panther, black, with a long tail. His parents are very worried as it is a popular place for walkers and want to warn people about the danger.

The new Warradale Community Action Association first big activity is the Warragamba Community Country Markets to be held once a month in the Warragamba Town Hall. They need stall holders and people to help on the days. This activity is designed to bring both locals and tourists into the centre of the town and financially benefit the township. They are also looking for community and sporting groups who wish to hold fundraising activities on the day.

Preschool funding Warragamba Preschool has been awarded $355,000 through the NSW Preschool Growth Program to build another preschool room. This will cater for an additional 20 children a day in the year prior to school. The preschool was the only preschool in NSW to receive a capital grant of more than $250,000. See page 11

Sharing, The Aussie Way “For those who come across the seas, we’ve boundless plains to share” (Advance Australia Fair) It’s hard to share. What if I don’t have enough? What if these newcomers get greedy? You give an inch, they take a mile! Hey, we got here first. We like our way of life. They do things differently. If they come, things will change. Our way of life will change. They will change our town/suburb/city/country. I only know what you know. I hear the same news and listen to the same politicians that you do. The question I ask is ‘should we share?’ Does the rule about sharing only apply to our kids with their toys, the computer or the food at the dinner table? Shouldn’t it also apply to us, when others are looking for somewhere to live? Or a new school? Or to use the water in our dam? Or those who are refugees running from war or poverty? Yes, Australia is a sovereign country. Our government has an obligation to protect our borders. Yes, we shouldn’t be naive about real dangers. Yes, criminals and terrorists should be prevented entry and prosecuted. Yes, newcomers necessarily involve a change and inconvenience. After all, even the birth of our

children does that! But after making due allowances for these things, the question still remains, ‘Should we share?’ I think we should. Even the people with whom we profoundly disagree are made in the image of God. If you go back far enough, we share the same parentage. So the Apostle Paul says: “From one man he made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he determined the times set for them and the exact places where they should live. God did this so that men would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us.” (Acts 17:26-27 NIV) Regarding the people who are already here, God has determined that they should live here. Why? So that they might reach out to seek God. That includes you. God has given you the peaceful and wealthy country of Australia. Why? So that you can reach out and find the God who reveals himself in Jesus Christ. And what of those who aren’t living amongst us but for valid reasons want to? What should our response be? We read that God commanded his Old Testament people, ‘The alien living with you must be treated as one of your nativeborn. Love him as yourself, for you were aliens in Egypt. I am the LORD your

God’ (Leviticus 19:34 NIV). And Jesus said ‘Love your neighbour as yourself’. This was his second most important commandment (Matthew 22:37-39). So love of the neighbour extends to the foreigner, the alien, the stranger. Remember, it was ‘new Australians’ that built Warragamba Dam and the Snowy River Scheme. Of course, if there is no God, be selfish. Don’t share. Or share only if it suits you. Make life as good for yourself as you can during this short and miserable life. But that is not the Christians way, nor is it the Australian way, whose parliament opens with the Lord’s Prayer, and whose National Anthem speaks of ‘boundless plains to share’.

In accordance with the Sydney Water Catchment Management Act, the Minister for Water has commissioned the NSW Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water (DECCW) to undertake an audit of Sydney’s drinking water catchments. The audit is undertaken every three years to provide a snapshot of the health of the catchment. This audit will use a ‘pressure-state-response’ model that examines human pressures on the condition of the Sydney Drinking Water Catchment area. The audit will assess the condition of the catchment using indicators relevant to raw water supply, managing water resources, land condition and ecosystem health. The DECCW is inviting interested parties to make a submission presenting any information or data that may assist the conduct of the audit and provide comments relating to the state of the catchment. Please send submissions to: Sydney Drinking Water Catchment Audit c/- Martin Krogh NSW Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water PO Box A290 Sydney South NSW 1232. or email them to: SWCA.2010@environment.nsw.gov.au The closing date for the receipt of submissions is 13 August 2010. Inquiries regarding the audit and its terms of reference can be made to Martin Krogh on (02) 9995 5619, or Jocelyn Dela-Cruz on (02) 9995 5508.

Maximising your Tax Refund It is that time of year again when the new financial year kicks off from 1st July and people start to panic when they hear the word ‘TAX’. However, at ELG Accounting & Taxation we can take away the pain and ensure we maximise your refund within the tax guidelines. Unfortunately, there has been recent media hype around this topic with the government introducing in 2 years time a choice of a simple tick and flick system with standard deduction of $500. This has been misinterpreted as a $500 refund BUT this is not the case. It is only replacing the $300 standard deduction currently avail-

able which means it results an average tax refund of $150. And what was not publicised in the media from the Tax Office website was that the average taxpayer claims deductions worth $1,920 with 7.6 million taxpayers lodging work related deductions. What does this all mean? If you accept the government’s simple one off deduction (to commence from 1/7/2012) this could allow the government in the future to take away your right to claim all your work related deductions. The government will be saving taxpayers money by you choosing not to seek professional assistance in the preparation of the return. We are a cost efficient investment to you to give you all round advice. Our fees start from $110 incl GST per return and are tax deductible. We also research many other government initiatives like the education tax offset, medical expenses offsets, etc and we ensure we inform you the taxpayer of your right to claim. Fernhill antiques sold The historic house of Fernhill in Mulgoa, had a truly magnificent collection of antiques and artworks that had been bought over 30 years by local businessman Warren Anderson to specifically furnish the beautiful Georgian house. Robert Brooks, the chairman of international auction house Bonhams, said the auction was the most “glamorous and exciting single owner sale” of the year. “It is a world-class collection put together by someone with a real eye for the best and the most beautiful art,” Mr Brooks said. The separation of Warren and his wife, Cheryl, after 42 years of marriage and the division of the assets led to the sale. Mr Anderson said “The collection belonged to my family, my children and grandchildren and it is heartbreaking to see it split up. The removal of all the furniture and fittings was particularly distressing as chandeliers were ripped out of the ceilings, paintings pulled off the wall and carpets rolled up causing considerable damage to the interior of my home. The sheriff arrived without notice, took 30 truck loads of my possessions away

over 4 days and then sent the bill for $800,000! Losing all the contents of the house was a great tragedy for the family but also for Fernhill where the beautiful furniture and artworks were part of its unique heritage.” Among the 1300 items auctioned were 18th and 19th-century paintings, rare furniture, French Empire clocks, several original horse-drawn carriages and suits of Japanese armour. The collection of stuffed animals included many birds, preserved rhino heads, wombats and penguins, stuffed emu, elephant feet and a pair of extinct New Zealand huia birds. The auction fetched $12million but Mr Anderson was extremely unhappy with this. He said ‘the auction was butchered with no reserves on the items. The value of these items was $20million years ago and they were sold for one third of the price they should have got”. In his usual flamboyant style he said “I might as well have sent them to the abattoir!” The highest price was paid for an English painting by Philip Reinagle of Colonel Thornton, the Marquess Dupont, hunting. It fetched $290,000 Mr Anderson made his fortune building Coles supermarkets through-

out Australia and business ventures in Western Australia. He bought Fernhill 30 years ago and has lived in Mulgoa with his family for much of this time. The plans for sub dividing part of the Fernhill estate have been approved in principal by the State Government to progress to the rezoning stage. It includes a $5–10 million residential development off Fairlight Road. Part of the proceeds of the sale will go into a trust fund administered by a committee with the interest being used to maintain Fernhill and its heritage environs for the next 100 years. Mr Anderson said “the plundering of Fernhill could put this in jeopardy. It certainly doesn’t help.”

Panther sighting There have been several reports over the years of a panther in the area stretching from Warragamba to Richmond to the Blue Mountains. Luke is 15 years old, knows what a panther looks like and was quite sure it was one. He was certainly scared at the time when it ran very fast out of the bush in front of him. If you have any information about other local incidents please contact the editor, contact details on page 2.

Gary has a bit less hair now than the photo here. He shaved his head in March for the ‘Worlds Greatest Shave’ for the Leukaemia Foundation and raised $566. Gary would like to thank many thanks to the locals that supported him.

Warragamba Rangers Softball

Gary receiving his Junior sporting award last year from David Bradbury MP

Gary Sedwell from Mulgoa, aged 15, is a year 10 student at Glenmore Park High. He has represented the school in the Sydney West Opens Volleyball team and has been selected to play in the Under 17 N.S.W. State Volleyball team as co captain to play in Perth this July. He has also been selected in the CHS under 16 NSW State team to play in Canberra in August. Gary has also represented his school at zone, regional and state level in discus, shot put and Javelin in 2009 and was Junior Sports Man of the Year at school. He was also age champion in swimming and represented the school in AFL so a great achiever in a wide range of sports.

The Warragamba Rangers softball team has been very successful with its women’s teams. Last year the club grew with some junior teams and a men’s team. Four teams made the semis and the men were runners up in Div 2 Grand Final. Softball has the opportunity for kids to compete at all levels and holds development clinics every Saturday morning for those who like to improve their skills or learn some new ones. Softball is played at Glenmore Park, same time, same place every week. Softball is a great way to make new friends as it is social as well as competitive. You mix with players from all teams every week, and can trial for representative teams from T-Ball up.

Council approval has just been received and construction will commence in August. The new preschool room will adopt an innovative teaching style linking learning to the Board of Studies syllabus. Mulgoa School Sustainability Garden In 2008 the Sustainability Street Group received a grant from Penrith Council for a project in Mulgoa. A vegetable garden was created at the school to be used, enjoyed and a learning experience for community and school. It has been maintained by the school children and limited members of the Sustainability Group for the past two years. Recently a load of compost and mulch has been received from Penrith Council for a much needed revamp of the garden. Local volunteer, Lee, will be at the garden each Tuesday afternoon from 2 to 3pm from 27 July with a group of students who get much pleasure out of the garden. With extra help on these days Lee could have a larger group of students in the garden. If you are interested in helping please contact Lee on 4773 8318 or 0413 233 495.
