Warragamba in the news Warragamba Dam gates opened at 7pm on Friday 2nd March to hundreds of spectators and media crews. This photo is from the Sydney Morn-
ing Herald website where you can watch a video of the event and listen to the noise of the water thundering into the pond at the bottom of the 100 metre drop. The pond acts as an energy dissipater, slowing the water before it flows down the Warragamba River to join the Hawkesbury-Nepean system. The lookout at Eighteenth Street was packed with people although some of them complained about the view being obscured by trees. The main drum gate holding back Warragamba Dam was last opened in August 1998.

Sacred Heart Parish Easter Timetable
Great Comebacks At Easter Aren't Long Finned Eels amazing? I've only heard about it, but I understand the last time water was released from Warragamba Dam, the fully grown eels in Lake Burrogorang knew all about it. They gathered at the Dam Wall to launch themselves backwards through the gates to take a 'non-rope bungy jump' down the face of the dam wall. But that's only the beginning, for there they journey to the coast, transform their bodies when they hit salt water, and then travel many thousands of kilometres to their mysterious south pacific Island spawning site. But even that's not the end. For even though those parent eels never return, their babies do. Without their parent's help, those baby eels somehow know how to get back from their south pacific nursery into the Nepean River and then climb up into Lake Burrogorang again. What a comeback! And who would have thought it is all kicked off by releasing a bit of water after good rains? Jesus also made an amazing comeback. On the first Good Friday, Jesus' death was a real 'non-rope bungy jump'. Even though he was God eternal, and equal with God his Father, the Son became fully human, and died the horrible death of a cross. He did this for us and our salvation. It looked like it was all over for him. Yet, on the third day, Jesus rose from the dead. He was transformed, and took up a new resurrection body, recognisable, but glorious. And now he has returned to his Father, remaining there until he comes back to earth. Christianity rises or falls with the rising of Jesus. If Jesus be not raised, Christian faith is stupid. Go to the beach instead! But if Jesus is alive and at the right hand of God his Father, as I believe he is, we have something to say at funerals. Death is not the end. It is the pathway to eternal life for those who trust in Jesus Christ. We know this because Jesus' rose from the dead. He tested it all out, and it all works. So is it true? You can read the evidence yourself (Matthew 28; Luke 24; John 20-21; 1 Corinthians 15). And come to church this Easter.

Coal Seam Gas and Warragamba Despite Wollondilly Council’s clear position that a moratorium should remain in place on Coal Seam Gas production until the environmental effects are properly understood and despite being given assurances that Council will be consulted prior to any exploration for CSG in the Warragamba area, Apex Energy has quietly announced it is to begin CSG exploration in the Shire. Without any consultation to either the community or Council this action by Apex Energy again highlights the sidelining of Council in these types of developments. Council has previously called on the State Government to bring it to the table before the State approves these activities but again this has not happened. “I am sure I am speaking on behalf of our community when I say that this is simply not good enough” said Mayor Cr Col Mitchell. “Council passed a number of resolutions regarding Coal Seam Gas in November last year including resolutions to continue a moratorium on the industry in NSW and improving community consultation around CSG proposals. These resolutions were then formally presented to the Upper House Inquiry on Coal Seam gas in December.” “The Wollondilly community needs to be informed about this type of activity in the Shire from the start, not as an afterthought. I would have expected Apex Energy to have at least given us the courtesy of fulfilling their previous commitments to Council of early consultation, but they haven’t.” Council has formally requested that Apex Energy fulfil their promise and consult with Council regarding this project.

An open letter to Tony Abbot, and Julia Gillard PM. I’ve been fighting against the Badgerys Airport proposal for more than 20 years now. If there’s one thing I know about this proposal, it is that it is WRONG. Over so many years I have seen continuous wrongs committed over and again, which are associated with this proposal. It has cost me a fortune, and caused untold damage and cost in so many different ways, to so very many people. My Mum died whilst fighting the proposal in 1992, Dad in 1994. Alan Reed in 1996, Bob Young in 2002, Robert Green in 2006 and Harry Sergeant in 2009. These were all wonderful and intelligent caring responsible people, and close friends of mine who were at the front line of the fight, now deceased. There are many others as well. Behind this proposal are the real “faceless men” who Mr. Abbott continually bleats on about. The fact is that these “faceless men” pay professional lobbyists and “donate” to both The Liberal and Labor parties and their members, and so de-facto, control them. There is overwhelming evidence to show that no airport should be built anywhere in Western Sydney, or elsewhere in the Sydney basin for that matter. This is a
sick joke conducted by sick greedy people, and the time to put an end to it, is now. Take the ridiculous restrictions off the area surrounding Badgerys Creek, and let these people get back on with their lives. Peter Cork
Macarthur Mayors against second airport The mayors of Campbelltown, Camden and Wollondilly councils have joined forces in opposition to any proposal by the Federal Government for a second airport in the Macarthur region. “There is no room for compromise on the issue of a second airport in south west or western Sydney, and we will fight this issue wholeheartedly to the end,” the mayors said in a joint statement. “The Macarthur region of councils have consistently and vehemently opposed a second airport in our region on the basis of environmental considerations, noise pollution and the impact on new urban housing release areas, which are estimated to squeeze a city the size of Canberra in our backyard. “The residents of the Macarthur region must not be penalised in terms of
their health and wellbeing, their lifestyle opportunities, their access to future housing, as well as employment and economic development opportunities, under any circumstance,” the mayors said. “We call on the Minister and the Federal Government to categorically rule out any consideration of a potential site for a second Sydney airport, to be located in western Sydney or in the Sydney basin. Clearly proven scientific constraints relating to poor air quality in south west Sydney and its attendant health risks, coupled with the implications of aircraft noise emissions, lead us to believe that our residents, existing and future, must not be disadvantaged in satisfying Sydney’s future airport requirements. “Our position is firm and final – no second Sydney airport for Macarthur. This is a view each of us feel strongly about, and we are united in opposing any government on plans to the contrary”. The south west Sydney sub-region has a current population of more than 450,000 people, which is planned by the NSW Government to grow to in excess of 875,000 by 2036.

On Thursday 23rd Feb at 11.30am I was driving along Mulgoa Rd heading to Penrith doing the speed limit when from behind me came a dark blue BMW with green P plates, with a young woman driving, doing at least 100. I thought gee, she is coming a bit fast when to my astonishment she then overtook me on double white lines around a right hand bend. She had no idea if anything was coming towards her. Lucky for the both of us there wasn't. So, if your daughter drives the dark blue BMW, please have a chat with her about her and everyone else's safety on the roads. Uncontrolled dogs killing livestock Anyone with animals will know how dreadful it is to find them savaged by dogs. A family in Fairlight Road in Mulgoa have had 7 goats, including a pregnant mother killed or injured by dogs over the past few months. The owner of the property is very angry with the continual worry, expense and distress and wants it to be known that any dogs seen in their paddocks with the goats will be shot. This applies to any property. Dog owners have a legal obligation to keep them under control.

BOWELCARE 2012 Cancer of the bowel is the commonest internal cancer to affect men and women in western society. Over 9,000 Australians will be diagnosed as having bowel cancer this year and over 4,500 will die of the disease. Formerly known as Bowelscan, BowelCare is an annual not for profit campaign in which Rotary clubs around Australia distribute Colorectal Screening kits to pharmacies. These simple test kits are available for $10
during March at Mulgoa, Warragamba and Silverdale chemists, thanks to Wallacia Mulgoa Valley Rotary Club. The testing kit is easy to use, and should then be returned to your local chemist for analysis. Rotary members transfer the kits from the chemist to an accredited pathologist and this is included in the $10 cost. Since Bowelscan commenced, it is estimated that more than 1,000 people with bowel cancer and 5,000 with polyps have been detected. If detected early, bowel cancer is one of the most curable cancers.

Scrapbooking By Design
New owners for Cafe in Luddenham
Kathryn Rowlings from Silverdale is a busy mother of three children, constantly trying to capture those special moments on camera. After discovering scrapbooking with friends she became obsessed with creating her children’s albums to keep and cherish for today and forever. Her love of scrapbooking continued to grow, hence, Scrapbooking By Design was born. Kathryn says “As a scrapbooker I found there was a wide range of products which became overwhelming. My aim was to create a website that is easy to find scrapbooking products that are unique. I believe everyone shops differently and there are various ways you can find your products. Taking this into consideration and reflecting upon my own experiences I have set up my online store for friends and customers to be able to design their scrapbooking pages by brands, themes (if you have a particular occasion in mind), and also by embellishments (which are sorted into categories). As a mother I understand how little time you have to get things done so I have designed my online store to save you time. I have personally selected what I believe to be the premium products and what I think my friends and customers will like. Our store prides itself on finding the best and highest quality products. We want to make your scrapbooking experience fun, friendly, and forever!” Have a look at Kathryn’s website, www.scrapbookingbydesign.com.au, and be inspired to get on with your scrapbooking. There is a 20% off the retail price deal at the moment so a great time to order some supplies. You can also check out the Facebook page.
Gemma-Lee Chetcuti has worked in a local cafe for several years and is very excited to finally have her own place to manage. Gemma-Lee and her partner Greg Mackie have taken over the Northern View cafe on the Northern Road at Luddenham. Gemma-Lee has some great homemade cakes to go with the coffee but is specialising in gourmet sandwiches with her very popular roast beef cooked fresh daily. Greg does a unique chicken schnitzel in 3 different styles, including chilli with garlic and lemon with chives. The cafe is behing the Shell service station and has a lovely view across open countryside. It’s a great place to meet up with friends for coffee or lunch, but is also extremely popular early in the morning for bacon & egg rolls. A Big Breakfast is now available on Saturday and Sunday mornings from 8am to midday.

Development in Silverdale Road and St Helliers Road Several residents are concerned about this development. It is good to have more families moving into the area but an additional 140 homes puts extra stresses on the existing facilities and roads. The following information has been supplied by Joanne Down, Communications Unit Team Leader at Wollondilly Shire Council Rezoning of land at 2044-2054 Silverdale Road, Silverdale from an RU2 Rural Landscape zone to R2 Low Density Residential zone. This is in keeping with the zoning immediately to the north of the site. • The site is identified in the Structure Plan map for Silverdale & Warragamba in the Growth Management Strategy as a potential area for the growth of Silverdale. • The draft proposal states that a potential lot yield of at least 140 lots could be achieved with a lot size of 970 square metres. • There is some significant remnant Shale Sandstone Transition Forest on the site, which is an endangered ecological community and provides shelter for native wildlife, detailed studies will need to be made of the site to determine the biodiversity values of this area, this could impact on the number of lots achievable through any potential future subdivision. • It is likely that a detailed traffic study will need to be undertaken regarding the local road network in Silverdale. chronic illness, family or marriage problems and for some just trying to keep their heads above water in these uncertain times. As a Church we want to offer to pray for anyone who would like us to pray for them. People can anonymously email their prayer request to warragambabaptist@gmail.com.

Warradale Men’s Shed
We will still have a go at any little jobs that are within our capacity, but we will not be taking work from businesses or tradespeople. We are growing week by week and every new member brings new skills. Come along and join us.”
The men’s shed is coming on really well opposite the Warragamba Workers and Sporting Club on the site of the old club. Thanks to the club for their support and generosThere are ity and to all the supover 600 sheds port from the members throughpout Ausand the community in tralia now. Terry was general. involved with setWe are still meeting ting up the Oakdale in the Town Hall anMen’s shed a few nexe but the new buildyears ago and has ing is in its final stages. been able to use his It is hard to believe that experience helping just a year ago it was the Rural Bush with the Warradale Men’s Shed. Fire Brigade shed in Thirlmere. He has written a poem which really Terry Atkins says “Having the shed sums up what the Men’s Shed is all so close to town makes it easy and about. convenient for members to attend. But just because we have a fancy shed What is a Men’s Shed dosn’t mean we won’t be helping out By Terry Atkins in the community as we have in the past. Men’s Sheds aren’t just buildings Nor hallowed halls of fame ACCOUNTANT Not church or lodge or temple Or shelter from the rain
It’s a place where we can gather And talk about our hates We can share each other’s problems And be the best of mates As most of us have been there And there is no disgrace To talk about the burden That shows up on our face We have all trod many highways And learnt a thing or two Passed the time and wasted some And spent a Bob or two
So with all our talents joined as one We make a mighty foe Something to be reckoned with And always on the go So when you see our sign displayed You’ll know just who we are We are blokes just having fun And some kids old grandpa
