Mulgoa Master Chef Matt Walton from Mulgoa has won the Regional and the NSW Apprentice Chefs Culinary competitions. The 19 year old has been working as an apprentice chef at Restaurant Como in Blaxland for three years and has been very grateful for the help and support from owner and head chef Grant Farrant.

Matt loves cooking at home for his family and is really thrilled with his win.

Liz Aces the World Liz has won the over 60s individual women’s championship three times previously and been runner up many times.

She also competed in the doubles competition but despite having won this event for the past 17 years, she and her partner had to settle for runners up.

Liz is currently ranked 24 in the world. This was her 20th time entering the event.

The ITF World Super Seniors tournament is the biggest event for sen-

iors in the world.

Police News Dam Fest: Police from St Marys LAC were present at the 50th anniversary of the opening of Warragamba Dam where nil incidents were reported.

Fatal Accident at Wallacia: On 3 November a motorcyclist and his pillion passenger crashed into oncoming traffic on Mulgoa Road, Wallacia.

The rider and his female passenger died at the scene while the young driver of the car from Warragamba was taken to Nepean Hospital where she was treated for minor injuries and shock.

Right & Wrong: How Do We Know?

Last week, various media outlets including the ABC, reported a story about a footballer in the National Rugby League. According to these reports, his team mates took a photo of him committing a lewd act with a dog. This is not the first scandal for the NRL. In the recent past, there have been reports of players involved in group sex.

These stories have grabbed the media spotlight, and the players were ‘named and shamed’. Media commentators ‘tut tut’. Sponsors threaten withdrawing support. The players contracts or media jobs are at risk. Everything gets uppity. But after a time, everyone’s forgotten, things go back to normal.

As a society, I’m unsure why we do this? It seems hypocritical. After all, the prevailing moral attitude is ‘as long as you aren’t hurting some one else and everything is consensual, how can something that feels right be wrong?’ Sexual preference is simply a matter of personal taste. It is just a matter of the way you are. If there is a god, he or she isn’t concerned about such things. This message is conveyed in so many different ways by our media. So why does the media jump on these stories? Because they really think the players have misbehaved?

Or because there is something salacious about these things which provide fodder for journalists?

Many of the things we now accept in society as normal were once scandalous. Our grandparents, who survived World War 2, often shake their heads at the changes they’ve seen.

We live in a society were cohabitation before marriage is normal. Take our Prime Minister, for example! A prime minister in a de facto relationship would have been unthinkable in the 1950s. Serial monogamy seems to be the acceptable sexual practice, unencumbered by the restrictions of marriage. Sex before marriage is now not only expected but accepted and seen as moral acceptable, so that the one who who is still a virgin is considered to have a ‘problem’ needing to be fixed. This was the theme in a recent Home and Away episode. Consensual homosexual behaviour is quite acceptable in our society for those over 16, even though up until the 1980s it was a crime in NSW. Adultery is called ‘having an affair’ and is practiced by many of our famous celebrities. Adulterers are now often astonished that their former spouse takes umbridge with their decision to walk away from the marriage.

What is the philosophical or theoretical basis for these changes in so-

cial mores? Personal preference is supreme. As long as you are not hurting the other person, and both parties agree, it’s none of anyone else’s business what you do with your body. It’s a private matter. What matters is the parties are consenting adults (or noncoerced peers). The acts I referred to in my first paragraph above can all be justified according to this ethic, if they were done with consent or without coercion. And many other things also can be justified. This gives people very little moral guidance.

Is there a better way? Yes. It is to return to the makers instruction book, the Bible. It is to see that something is not wrong or right because the media or society thinks it is (whether everybody is doing it or not), but because it either conforms to or repudiates the intention of the God who made us. And reading the bible, we discover that all people have sinned, and all people have gone against God’s will. That is why Jesus came into the world. Christ came into the world to save sinners (1 Timothy 1:15). Christ came into the world not to condemn the world but to save the world (John 3:17).

Warragamba – Silverdale Art Group (The Dam Artists)

Special thanks from the group to everyone who attended our Art Show at DamFest. We had an excellent response to the quality of the work on display resulting in the sale of quite a few paintings.

A special thank you to Wollondilly Shire Council for awarding us a Community Grant in the 2010 allocations. This has enabled us to advertise our group and run activities which include the Art Show and seven art workshops.

Our first art workshop was held on Tuesday 19 October

by Lindy Finlay from Tahmoor where we were instructed on pencil and charcoal sketching. It was a very informative morning and well attended.

Girls’ Night In Thank You Girls’ Night In was held on 30 October at Warragamba Conference Centre.

Thank you to everyone who bought tickets in our raffle and to the 93 ladies who gave up a Saturday night and came along to raise money by spending what they would spend on a night out. All the ladies dressed up and looked great.

It was a huge success with everyone getting into the swing of the night buying lots of raffle tickets, balloons, desserts, having their nails done and their fortunes told. A total of $6,470 was raised and all proceeds were donated to the Cancer Council.

Permanent Memorial to honour workers who died building Warragamba Dam

On 17 October the NSW Government unveiled a permanent memorial to the workers who died building Warragamba Dam 50 years ago. NSW Minister for Water Phil Costa said the memorial is an important monument to remember the 14 Servo Saver Dockets Accepted Here workers who tragically lost their lives during construction.

“For close to 20 years, 1800 people from more than 30 BP ULTIMATE SOLD HERE nations worked three shifts a day, seven days a week to build Warragamba Dam, and the result was an engineering marvel that continues to provide most of Sydney’s water today,” Minister Costa said.

“The work was hard, the conditions were difficult and the workers didn’t enjoy the strict safety standards in place today. Tragicallly, a number of workers died during construction.

What’s Happening at Holy Family School Looking around the school there are some fantastic things happening in all classes.

In Kindergarten children are making fantastic progress with their reading and writing skills. Also our Kinder teachers are out and about visiting local preschools meeting children and parents as well as working alongside the preschool staff.

Year 1 are working on a unit related to energy and are using toys as way of exploring different types of energy. They will be having a visit from staff at Bunnings, Penrith who will help them design and construct toys which will then be donated to a charity to be used as Christmas presents for other children.

Year 2 recently visited the Campbelltown Bicycle and Road Education Centre as part of their Road Safety unit. During the day the children had an opportunity to explore road rules and safe practices when riding their bikes and using roads and paths as pedestrians.

Last term Stage 2 looked at British Colonisation. As part of this work

they had a very entertaining and informative incursion from a group who portrayed what life was like for those living in colonial times.

The Stage 3 enrichment students have been working on a Time Project.

Each student has been looking at time zones and how they differ from country to country around the world. Each participant also designed their own time device to help travelers as they moved between time zones.

In other news about our enrichment program the students who attended the day with Caroline Chisholm have continued their open investigations. At the moment they are working on Mensa mind puzzles and problem solving using creative and lateral thinking skills.

Big Events at Luddenham Two exciting events were recently hosted at Luddenham Showground.

Round 10 of the Professional Bull Riders Challenger Series was held on 30 October with 40 bull riders participating in this action packed day. The event was moved from Penrith Paceway where it was held in 2009 to Luddenham Showground as it was considered well located within easy driving distance from Penrith, Campbelltown, Camden and Liverpool.

Luddenham Medieval Fair took place on 7 November and included the Medieval Equestrian Sport Tournament - jousting, archery, melee, foot fighting tournament, street theatre and dance as well as live medieval music, markets and stalls.

Dam Fest – a Huge Success On Sunday 17 October, Dam Fest was held in the township of Warragamba as well as the 50th Anniversary of the Opening of Warragamba Dam. The attendance was huge with an estimated crowd of 15,000 people. Our Mayor, Cr Michael Banasik was on site for most of the day along with Cr’s Read, Hannan, Khan, Mitchell, Beshara, Landow and Benn Banasik. Also present was Member for Wollondilly and Minister for Water, Phil Costa.

Mayor, Cr Michael Banasik said, “I would like to congratulate the organisers of Dam Fest, it really was a great day out.

The official ceremony was fantastic and highly enjoyable. I was so impressed with the inclusion of the school children from Warragamba Primary School who carried flags for the official ceremony. The unveiling of the plaque dedicated to workers was a wonderful highlight of the day.”

“It was fantastic to see so many of our local community members supporting Dam Fest, and the feedback on the event has been very positive. We would like to thank all of our event supporters & sponsors, and most importantly our event volunteers who helped make Dam Fest a huge success,” said organising committee’s Secretary Rhonda Tedesco.

Show stopping performances by Simply Bushed were well received by the crowd, and the stunt bike display had everyone revved up! The variety of food and market stalls had something for everyone, and our local community groups raised much needed funds by holding stalls. The helicopter flights over the Dam were a hit with event patrons, with 2 helicopters running non-stop all day.

Warragamba Gets "A Bank" Residents might have driven through town and wondered what all the commotion was at the old bottle shop at the bottom end of town.

Warragamba has not got "a bank", but it is now part of the ANZ commercial series about "living in bank world" On Monday and Tuesday 1st and 2nd of November the Plaza Film Crew were filming the new ad for the ANZ bank. Australian Film Locations had to pick the location for the ad and as there was also filming of a commercial at a farm at nearby Cobbitty, Warragamba was chosen for it's location and for logistical purposes.

Chris from Australian Film Locations said that while in the area looking

for a suitable location, they had taken notice of all the other potential spots they could use in future, and would be more than happy to return. Chris also commented what a lovely town War-

ragamba Dam (information about the Burragorang movies can be seen on the Drops of Wisdom table at the new Warragamba Dam Visitor Centre) Wollondilly is also being scouted as a location due to its natural beauty and heritage buildings, with the new Oak "hungrythirsty" ad being filmed in the main street of Picton.

YourTutor On Monday 1 November Wollondilly Library and Information Services had a launch for the YourTutor on line service. The Library has received funding from the University of Western Sydney to continue our already established Yourtutor Service. The Mayor, Cr Michael Banasik and Professor Branko Celler Executive Dean, College of Health and Science, UWS signed an agreement for UWS to match Wollondilly Shire Coun-

cil’s investment into this service in the amount of $4,240.

YourTutor allows students with a Wollondilly Library Card to logon to this service and get advice from tutors in a variety to topics, including Maths, Science, English, Writing Essays. The tutor can also have a look at essays that a student has written and highlight sections that the student may revise for improvement.

YourTutor is available for students from year 4 to the first year of TAFE and all students must be a library

member. You can log on to YourTutor through the Library website using your library membership number.
