Red Cockatoo Australia started in 2007 when Tracey Allen started assisting local Blue Mountains Aboriginal artists in achieving their goals around creating artworks for the public.

St Hilda’s Church

St Hilda’s Anglican Church in Katoomba was established 125 years ago, in November 1885. The first Minister at St Hilda’s was reverend Edward Symons, who also established St Aidan’s Anglican Church in Blackheath, a year before in 1884.

It is worth noting that both Churches were named after influential Christians who lived in the Northumbria area of England in the 7th Century - Hilda being the Abbess of Whitby, while Aidan was the Bishop of Northumbria. The other link between the names of the two Churches is that both Hilda and Aidan came from Celtic Christian backgrounds. At St Hilda’s, this Celtic background is still reflected in the Celtic cross which stands at the apex of the Church’s roof.

In 1885, St Hilda’s Church was a weatherboard building, built slightly further down the hill, and horizontal to the road. That building’s posi-

tion is now the location of the current Church Hall; and Anglicare Counselling Offices.

The current brick Church was constructed in 1914, and dedicated in 1915. The Bell Tower was built in the 1930’s. Incidentally, in 1914, the St Hilda’s Minister’s name was Reverend Godson, which seems an appropriate name for a Clergyman!

But perhaps more significantly, it should be noted that the 1914 Foundation Stone Tablet reads “For Mine House shall be called a House of Prayer for all people. Isaiah 56.7”- for that is what St Hilda’s is, a Church where everyone is welcome to attend.

During her life, Hilda was a great promoter of the arts, discovering and encouraging the work of an early English poet called Caedom. She was also known as a woman who not only gave counsel to Nobles, Bishops, Monks and the like, but also shared the Gospel with local farmers and their families.

The Rhododendron Retreat Opens Its Doors

Acclaimed Choir To Visit Leura

Nestled in this wonderful garden landscape, cared for by gardener Phil Livanes, is the studio of mountains artist Susan McLeod.

On Sunday 28 November at 7.00pm the internationally acclaimed choir The Cathedral Singers will once again feature at the annual Advent Lessons and Carols Service at St Alban’s Anglican Church, 137A Megalong Street, Leura. Everyone is warmly welcome to attend this inspirational service.

Music featured in the service will include Palestrina Matin Responsory; Mendelssohn Veni Domine; Ord Adam lay ybounden; Ison Behold a rose; Cantiones/Woodward Gabriel’s Message and Trad/RVWilliams The Truth from above.

In 2011 the choir will once again tour the United Kingdom. Their commitments now include (in order) Westminster Cathedral London, St John’s College and Great St Mary’s Cam-

bridge; Ely, Peterborough, St Edmundsbury and Ripon Cathedrals, York Minster, Southwark Cathedral and conclude with Evensong at St Paul’s Cathedral, London. The opportunity to join them at the service in Leura on 28th November should not be missed.

Campbell Rhodondendron Gardens

While we’ve all shivered this spring, the chilly weather has had at least one benefit - it has extended the flowering season at the Campbell Rhododendron Gardens in Blackheath.

These unique gardens combine the beauty of thousands of exotics, particularly rhododendrons and azaleas, with natural Australian bush. There is 18.5 hectares of riotous colour - many of the plants are still in bud, ready to emerge.

The gardens were established 40 years ago by a group of enthusiastic volunteers and they continue to be maintained entirely by unpaid members of the Blue Mountains Rhododendron Society of NSW. They are open all day every day, with vehicle access from 9am-4pm only. Come up and marvel at the mixture of gum trees and sumptuous spring blooms.

The gardens are in Bacchante Street, Blackheath, a pleasant 10-15 minute walk from the railway station.

Precious Brooch Lost

Julie lost her brooch in Leura on 9 October and has asked for help. She says, “I drove from Sydney to Leura as part of a choir which was asked to sing at the Garden Festival. We had a wonderful day visiting the Gardens and sang to a small but appreciative audience at the Fairmont Resort.

It was partway through the day that I realised I had lost my brooch – a gold and pearl bird – which had been my Dad’s gift to my Mum on her 70th birthday in 1991. I retraced my steps to each of the gardens but with no luck. I have left my name with the organisers and the police.”

Jewish Filmmaker Wins Christian Award For Film on Afghanistan

Katoomba documentary filmmaker Gary Caganoff’s latest film on Afghanistan has been honoured with a Human Rights award from the World Association for Christian Communication (WACC), and SIGNIS (the World Catholic Association of Communication) in Brussels. Unanimous in their decision, the award has been given to the documentary 'The Garden at the End of the World', produced and directed by Caganoff, for its rare sensitivity in the portrayal of human rights issues of ordinary people.

Philip Lee, Deputy Director of Programmes for WACC commented, “While there are now many feature length films on Afghanistan, it is much rarer to find a sensitively crafted documentary that shows ordinary people trying to rebuild their lives and those of others. WACC works to promote communication for social justice and the right to communicate and SIGNIS aims to promote a culture of peace.

As such, the programmes and projects we support take a rights-based approach.”

The Garden at the End of the World is a confronting documentary on Afghanistan illustrating the tragic consequences of war and the widespread hunger, homelessness and lawlessness that it causes. The film portrays the lives of the hardest hit, the widows and orphans, who number in tens of thousands and follows two Australian women: humanitarian, Mahboba Rawi (OAM), an Afghan refugee and internationally recognised permaculturalist Rosemary Morrow, a Quaker, who both offer alternatives to the ‘reconstruction’ efforts that have not worked.

Through these two remarkable women, Caganoff elicits stories and images of Afghanistan rarely seen before. Neither sentimental nor sensational the film is remarkable, reaching into the depths and complexities of war torn Afghanistan.

Excited by the award, Caganoff (who describes himself in the film as “Jewish with Buddhist tendencies”) explains, “The film is not religious, nor is it political. It manages to fly under the radar of both and focus on basic human rights issues that aren’t being addressed by either. Rosemary, Mahboba and Mahboba’s Uncle Haji,

who also features in the film, are true heroes. They work with passion and humility to help the Afghani women and children re-build their lives. This award is a wonderful recognition of their inspiring work.”

The production of The Garden at the End of the World was mainly funded by Caganoff, an independent filmmaker of 20 years, with the support of Screen Australia, The Documentary Foundation Australia and generous private donations.

Positive Living Aged Care Award

Anita Villa in Katoomba has won the 2010 NSW Positive Living in Aged Care Award. The aged care facility received the award in recognition of its successful project to reduce the risk of mental health conditions for residents with special needs.

The Minister Assisting the Minister for Health (Mental Health) Barbara Perry announced the award at a recent seminar on positive mental health for older people at Luna Park.

Locked within each individual is the potential to do magnificent things.

We can realise our dreams, and over come problems. It all starts with the mind, and the thoughts that we produce from it.

The Ladies Probus Club of the Upper Blue Mountains met at the Leura Golf Club on 20 October to hear Scott Williams speak on “Stars, Planets & Galaxies”. His presentation was aided by videos of the stars and the solar system. The birth development and final phases of stars proved enlightening to the members and provoked many intelligent and knowledgeable questions which Scott handled with great expertise.

Leura C.W.A. held their General Annual Meeting on Monday, 11th October which was chaired by Mrs. Shirley Merrett, Secretary for the Blue Mountains Area. The positions for this year are: Kerry Owers, President, Margaret Muirhead, Sectary and Rosemary French, Treasurer.

We are looking forward to an interesting year. The country of study this year is Iceland. At our last meeting we heard a very interesting talk by two members of N.S.W. Rural Fire Service who gave us useful information on how to be prepared in the case of fire. Open Hearth Program

Open Hearth is a parish outreach project from the Uniting Church providing a free meal and fellowship for people in the mountains community.

Many of those who come live alone and are often isolated. It gives an opportunity for sharing and mutual support over a meal. People who attend come from very diverse backgrounds.

Some are very needy and some are homeless. The common theme is caring and sharing.

Lunch is provided each Tuesday from 11am and an evening meal on the last Friday of each month from 5pm-7pm at the Katoomba Uniting Church.
