Street signs, trees, and telephone poles were wearing knitted sleeves in bright colours, some with crocheted detail and contrasting stripes This is a first for Katoomba, where aside from some clever stencil graffiti last year, the majority of tagging is done with the traditional spray can.

These knitting guerillas, operating under the name of ‘Knitta’ have since gone global, and knitted graffiti has appeared in places as diverse as the Notre Dame in Paris, the Great Wall of China and covering a bus in Mexico City. In July 2009, Magda Sayeg came to Australia for the ‘Knitta please’ festival at the National Gallery, and took time out to tag Martin Place and the Bondi Icebergs. In Australia the best known ‘guerilla knitter’ is Newtown-based Denise Litchfield, who organized a ‘group stitch’ project on the men’s Urinal in Taylor Square. See more of her work at her blog, grrrl+dog at http://www.dneese.blogspot. com/

Guerrilla Knitting The phenomenon of ‘knitted graffiti’ was started in Texas by Magda Sayeg, who felt that the world outside her window could do with a bit of brightening up. Magda and her ‘crew’ adopted names like ‘loop dog’, ‘sonofastitch’ ‘the knotorious N.I.T’ and “AKrylik”.

Are you working on peoples homes without a licence? If you are, it is not too long before you are caught: ignorance is not a defence. The Office of Fair Trading has a “zero tolerance for unlicensed and illegal activity” and they are concentrating in your area. A recent compliance blitz in areas to weed out “contractors

who aren’t licensed are often unqualified…” has begun with fines of up to $22,000 for individuals and $220,000 for companies in breach of the Home Building Act. With Fair Trading having 16 inspectors out in the field it is only a matter of time before they catch up with those working under the radar. Learn what you need to do to comply with the law and work with a clear conscience. The Master Builders Association offers varying pathways to get a contractor’s licence and are holding an information evening in Katoomba on 10th November with more details in the advert below.

Local churches are joining more than 1500 churches across NSW in the ‘Jesus all about life’ campaign that will run to the end of October. T h e internet, signs and banners, and TV commercials are modern methods being used to communicate a timeless message, that Jesus Christ has the answers to everyday life. The message is getting through with more than 8,900 fans so far on the web Facebook page. “While many people have been put off by what they see to be the failures and irrelevance of the church in the modern scientific age, research shows that most Australians do have some kind of a belief in God”, says Ray Robinson, Rector of St Hilda’s Anglican Church, Katoomba. “This campaign is an opportunity for people to discover what Jesus was like for themselves. By contacting a telephone number or web address highlighted in the advertising, a simple and very readable book will be sent free of charge explaining the life story of Jesus and the evidence for Christian faith. The book also contains stories of well known Australians and what faith means to them. Local churches can also provide help.” The Rev Bob Dennis from Blackheath Baptist church was very enthusiastic about the initiative of the campaign; “Like most Australians we are concerned about the increased rates of depression, binge drinking, domestic violence, and other maladies that

Book Review THE BURNING MISTS OF TIME: A Technological & Social History of Mining in Katoomba by Philip Pels & Philip Hammon (Philsquare Publishing 2009, Hardback $60) Behind the rather lengthy title is an excellent work of local history produced with passion and diligence. The idea first came to Philip Pels more than twenty years ago and was brought to fruition when local identity, Philip Hammon, joined the project. Pels is an engineer who specialised in mines and tunnels while Hammon operates Scenic World. The book starts with a brief overview of the geology and early discoveries of oil shale and coal, but when it moves into the many personalities involved in the development of the mining industries it really comes alive. Although there are detailed maps and some fairly technical detail the authors maintain our interest throughout with chapters on the social history of the times and the fate of the indigenous inhabitants. Of note is the story of the various mining skips and wagons told in the style of Thomas the Tank Engine. The book is illustrated with many wonderful photographs both past and present. A rewarding read. Tom Whitton/Megalong Books

Person of the Month Local Artist Rachel Szalay is preparing for her next big exhibition, being held at the Art House Hotel in Pitt St, Sydney. “It’s a huge space and a great opportunity.” Says Rachel. “My mind is racing with ideas and about 10 different works all happening at the same time!” Rachel defines her work as eclectic. “I love the surreal. Landscapes. Decorative. Floral. Figurative. I jump all over the shop. It’s bizarre what can trigger an idea. Sometimes it’s visual or other times it can be a phrase or poetry. Good photography also helps.” Her medium of choice for many years has been pastels, but she also loves ink, charcoal, gouache and oils and to a lesser extent, acrylic. “ I just haven’t made friends with acrylic,” jokes Rachel. “ but I do like metallics - gold and bronze.” Rachel began her career with a degree in Visual Arts at the City Art Institute in her late teens. In her final year, she successfully auditioned for NIDA, and after three more years of study,

embarked on a career as an actress. “The bulk of my work was with the Sydney Theatre Company from 1989 through to 2000.I had the wonderful fortune of working with many great people in that time; Geoffrey Rush, Michael Gow , Barrie Kosky, the late Ruth Cracknell and Gordon Chater to name a few.” Said Rachel. She felt that she had achieved a certain professional level with her acting by 2001, but hadn’t managed the same focus with her art. At the end of 2000, Rachel took a trip overseas to Amsterdam, Spain and Portugal. “The Van Gogh museum blew my mind”, said Rachel. “and seeing the Prado Museum and its wealth of history changed my direction. I wanted to pursue the art and see if I was any good.” When she returned to Australia, she decided to move to Katoomba. “There is such a strong artistic contingent up here and it’s simply a beautiful place to create and a lot cheaper

Blue Mountains National Park celebrates 50th Birthday The Blue Mountains National Park celebrated its 50th birthday on September 25, said local member for the Blue Mountains Phil Koperberg. “The Blue Mountains National Park is undeniably one of the most beautiful places in Australia and one that holds special memories for a great many people,” Mr Koperberg said. “Part of the traditional country of the Darug, Gundungurra, and Wiradjuri people, it has been cared for by countless generations resulting in a legacy that has now been formally recognised internationally as part of the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area. “Last year it became one of a handful of Commonwealth listed National Landscapes in recognition of its environmental and cultural significance. We really are so lucky to have such an amazing natural landscape right on Sydney’s doorstep, including the Three Sisters, Govetts Leap, the Grose Wilderness and numerous lookouts from which to appreciate the spectacular scenery. “Our recent visitor tracking survey has confirmed that the Blue Moun-

tains is the most visited National Park in NSW and last year more than 3.5 million people enjoyed its numerous scenic vantage points and hundreds of kilometres of walking tracks,” he said. First established in 1959 and only 62,000 hectares in size, today it covers over 247,000 hectares, and is acknowledged as one of the planets most important natural places and is instantly recognisable to millions of people throughout the world. The Blue Mountains National Park is often thought of as the cradle of modern conservation thanks to the vision of Myles Dunphy and others. The campaign to save the Blue Gum Forest in the 1930’s laid the foundation for what became the cornerstone of this great National Park. First managed by a Trust, the Blue Mountains National Park was transferred to the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) in 1971. “Since then it has continued to expand and now, together with Wollemi National Park, it is almost as extensive as Myles Dunphy had originally dreamed,” Mr Koperberg said. Katoomba Garden Club News. This October, Katoomba Garden Club’s guest speaker is Peta Trahar, from Woodgreen Garden at Bilpin. Woodgreen Garden is best known for its beautiful perennials, including salvias, artemisias, and roses. From the 3rd to 11th October is the Leura Garden Festival. This year, there are ten wonderful local gardens to visit. They include the Everglades, Tanglewood and Wa-Ila, Elouera and Abbotsford. Some of the gardens will also have musicians playing during the festival week. For more information, or to see the programme for the musical events, visit the website at info@leuragardensfestival.com.au , or call 0431 095279. On the 24th and 25th of October, the 2009 Iris Show will be held in the community hall at Blackheath, from 11am till 4.30 on Saturday, and from 9am to 4pm on Sunday. There will be plants for sale, and lunch and tea available. Meetings are held at 7pm on the 4th Wednesday of the month (except December) at Katoomba Civic Centre, Katoomba Street (next to the Library.)

New Mountain Bike Tracks Bush walkers and mountain bike riders will now have access to new tracks in the Blue Mountains with more than 1000 hectares of bushland opened up to the public, NSW Minister for Water, Phil Costa has announced. “These new changes are now in effect and will allow bike riders and bushwalkers to access ninekilometres of tracks around the pristine Woodford Lake. “The Woodford Dam has not been used for water supply for close to a decade and we’re able to open up access to this area for the first time.“Signage has been put in place to direct bushwalkers and bike riders around the tracks.“Access to the dam and lake itself will still be prohibited so swimming and fishing won’t be permitted.” Minister Costa said the decision was in response to a number of requests from the public during the exhibition of the Sydney Water Catchment Management Regulation 2008. “A 62 kilometre track from Blackheath to Yerranderie and an 11 kilometre track from Wentworth Falls to South Katoomba are currently under consideration for mountain bike riding access and will be on display for public feedback. “While our chief priority is protecting Sydney’s drinking water - these routes are already available to bushwalkers and the Sydney Catchment Authority has considered providing access to mountain bikes would pose a low risk to water quality. “I encourage the community to have a look at the proposed routes once on exhibition and provide their feedback. “It is important to balance community demand for recreational use of the lands with environmental and water quality considerations.”

Modern Solution To Walking Track An impressive helicopter operation took place recently along Darwin’s Walk, Wentworth Falls, but thankfully not due to any bushwalking misadventure. Blue Mountains City Council contracted the helicopter to airlift pre-constructed materials in to the site for the upgrade of the popular walking track. Mayor, Clr Adam Searle, said “The upgrade of the Darwin’s Walk is part of Council’s Environment Levy Program. faced Honeyeaters have arrived in their hundreds and I see or hear them every day. They love red flowers, especially bottlebrushes and grevilleas, so can be seen in many gardens as well as in the bush. Rufous Whistlers arrived last week and I heard the first Sacred Kingfisher of the season this morning. Black-faced Monarchs and Rufous Fantails are still to come. All this bird activity means that getting up early and going for a bird walk is a great way to start the day. This morning I heard Yellow Robin, Grey Fantail, Brown Thornbill and Spotted Pardalote before I even reached the front gate. Yellow-tailed BlackCockatoos were busy foraging in the banksias, Yellow-faced Honeyeaters and Eastern Spinebills were sipping nectar in a flowering mistletoe while a flock of Silvereyes hunting insects suddenly appeared in a large wattle. White-browed Scrubwrens chattered in the undergrowth and a Wonga Pigeon strolled ahead of me on the track. Isn’t spring wonderful? If you like to watch birds but don’t want to walk on your own, why not come on one of Blue Mountains Bird Observers’ walks. Visitors are always welcome and you can find the details on our website: www.bmbirding.com.au/bmbo

Good Golf, Good Food, Good Times at WFCC The Wentworth Falls Country Club has been very busy implementing changes to make sure that the community has a sporting and recreation facility to be proud of. The Club has added to a long list of benefits to being a social or golfing member and are making sure the club remains #1 in the mountains. By joining as a social member for $15 you receive access to the new “Fitness Centre” (until March 2010) and a range of discounts at the restaurant and bar. The Fitness centre is a member’s only boutique facility for no more than 5 members at a time. There are bikes and treadmills as well as a series of weights and dumbbells, and with Cable TV and cold water it has all you need without spending hundreds of dollars at a full Gym. The restaurant is being managed by the Golf Club again and is using the

talents of Californian based Karl Christ to create a new and exciting culinary experience. The Friday Night Carvery Buffet and Thursday $5 Pasta Night are proving to be a great success, offering value and entertainment and look set to remain. (It is rumored Karl is soon to make Saturday nights ‘a la carte’ with a new Menu and Crew). The new Kids Room is available up to 8pm and is an initiative to bring families back to the club with parent supervised entertainment for toddlers. The Golf Course is still the course of choice in the mountains and with a busy summer season ahead is currently offering full membership until March 2010 for $250.00. Not only do you get full access to the golf course but also the Fitness Centre for free. Or joining a fitness centre for $250.00 and getting golf for free, either way it is great value. Since 1913 the Club has been a part of the life of Wentworth Falls residents and with all the initiatives and hard work going on, it looks set to be a hole in one for many a year to come. Call Matt or Robyn on 4757 1202 ask for a tour of the club or visit the website www.wfcc.com.au for information on how to join.

Yes it’s shortly to arrive. We all need to learn from the unfortunate victims of Victoria. They were no different to us, enjoying a bushland community. Preparation starts now. Decide on what equipment you will require. How quickly and easily can it be engaged? Is there someone nearby who can use your equipment or make it available to the Fire Services in your absence? What water is available? In a bushfire situation the only water you can rely on is what is stored on your property. Any mains water comes as a bonus, but don’t rely on it being available. How will you dispense the water? Gutter Sprinklers? Fire Stands? Hoses? Can property protection be maintained when you need to take refuge inside? Remember your safety is your first priority. Thoroughly check all equipment. Run fire pumps or generators regularly to ensure they are available when you need them. Fire pumps can be tested by aiming the flow of water onto your roof that collects into your tank. This way little water is lost. Clean up your property now. The Fire Services will do what they can

but they have no prior commitment to your property. In many situations the Fire Services are stretched beyond what they can humanly handle. Your property protection is ultimately your responsibility.

Clear the clutter Emergency Services Minister Steve Whan has cautioned families across NSW that a build-up of unnecessary clutter around the home posed a serious fire threat. Mr Whan said a thorough spring clean now to clear away accumulated rubbish, garden refuse and hazardous materials such as out-of-date household, garden or pool chemicals would help minimise your home fire risk. “With spring here, people should use the momentum of a ‘spring clean’ to prepare for the warmer months, especially with the bushfire season upon us,” he said. “Take the time this weekend to look around your house, garden, garage and any storage areas and clear out rubbish such as piles of old newspapers, cardboard boxes, unused furniture, firewood or discarded children’s toys. You should also clean cooking appliances to remove built-up grease; prune shrubs and trees; re-

move leaves from gutters; check your power points and boards are not overloaded or damaged; and ensure your smoke alarms are working. “You should particularly make sure that nothing is blocking any exits or the escape points you have included in your home escape plan.” NSW Fire Brigades Director Community Safety and Assistant Commissioner Jim Smith said there had been tragic cases in which people had not been able to escape a home fire because of clutter or firefighters had difficulty locating victims. “Clutter is highly flammable and it’s often left in hallways, exits and other passages and thoroughfares in the home,” Assistant Commissioner Smith said.“This makes it harder for people to escape in a fire and it also makes it more difficult for firefighters to get into a home and search for victims and extinguish the blaze. “No matter how well you know your house, the smoke from a fire will make you disoriented and it is just too difficult to navigate your way over or around or through clutter.” Mr Whan said taking a few hours to clean up around the house was smart fire prevention that could save your family and your home.

Come and have a chat to Council and local emergency services about preparing your home and family for the bushfire season. An information kiosk will be held on Saturday 17 October at: Katoomba 9am to 11am Emergency Services Centre Cnr Bathurst & Valley Rds, Katoomba

South Katoomba Rural Fire Brigade The 2009/2010 bushfire season is almost upon us and South Katoomba Rural Fire Brigade is urging residents to thoroughly spring clean their properties in preparation for the bushfire season. To assist residents, a new bushfire warning system has been introduced by the NSW Rural Fire Service to assist residents in deciding what actions they need to take during the bushfire season. The new fire danger rating system is aimed at providing 6 bushfire threat warning levels. The most urgent of the warning levels is the “Catastrophic” threat level which urges residents to immediately take action to leave their properties for a safer location. It has been many years since a severe bushfire was experienced in the South Katoomba area and residents are es-

pecially advised to undertake property bushfire prevention work, cleaning roof gutters and valleys and raking of leaves to reduce the threat of a fire starting in and around homes from embers from a bushfire. Embers can travel many kilometres from a bushfire front and it is important for all residents in the Blue M o u n tains to ensure t h e i r property is well protected from a bushfire even if the property is located well away from the bush. Information regarding protecting your home from a bushfire is available from the Rural Fire Service web site or by contacting the local Blue Mountains Rural Fire Service District Office. South Katoomba residents who are thinking of joining a Rural Fire Brigade are welcome to attend South Katoomba Rural Fire Station any Wednesday evening from 7.00pm where infor-

mation about joining the Brigade is available.

The South Katoomba Rural Fire Brigade is holding an Information Evening on at 7.30pm 14 October 2009

The Station located off the access road beside Catalina Park near the Recreation Centre, follow the direction signs to the Station. A light supper will be provided. For additional information regarding protecting your home or joining the Brigade please contact 0419 636 902 during business hours.

Blue Mountains Cancer Help is a local organisation supporting people diagnosed with cancer in the Blue Mountains community. We are a registered, charitable organisation providing a large range of Complementary Therapies as well as facilitating support groups for member clients and their families/carers. Our Op-Shop in Katoomba provides us with a regular source of income, along with fund– raising events and donations. We offer the Gawler 12 week Living Well program twice a year with one running currently in Katoomba. Three projects we are presently running are creating much interest. First is our inaugural Calendar we are producing for 2010, using photographs of our volunteers, therapists and clients. Apart from fundraising benefits the purpose of the calendar is to acknowledge our volunteers, acknowledge that the disease does not define the life of the clients, and to promote the fact that hobbies and pursuits help to maintain a healthy life balance. Our second project is the raffle we are holding in association with Respite Tours Younger People in Nursing Homes Project. First prize is a $15,000 luxury kitchen, second prize is a single handmade patchwork quilt, and third prize is a digital photo frame. Drawn on 21st October 2009, tickets are available at various local shopping centres, the BMCH Op-Shop or Office.

For our the third project we are inviting members of the creative community and the general public, to join our ArtyBra Project. Decorate a bra and donate it to Blue Mountains Cancer Help. Paint, sculpt, stitch or embellish. We will then exhibit the bras for a period before auctioning each bra to the highest bidder and the proceeds will go to Blue Mountains Cancer Help. the deadline is 15th February 2010. Celebrating Carer’s Week 2009 Carers Week is a national awareness week held during October each year right across Australia. The event was established to promote and raise awareness of the valuable role that carers play in our community and to generate discussion about carer issues. Carers Week also provides an opportunity for carers to come together, support one another and share ideas and information. Carers Australia has received funding from the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing since 1993 to coordinate Carers Week. We work in collaboration with the state and territory carers associations as well as other stakeholders to promote carer issues to a national audience during this time. Carer’s Week has grown each year as a reflection of the increasing recognition of carers in our community.

Frogs and Friends The ‘Frogs and Friends’ Garden in Leura is open for the first time, October 3rd to 11th. Owner Helen Robertson has worked hard to create a themed garden aimed at children, using rescued and recycled materials. Helen has constructed a series of small scenes around the garden, including a garden-bed sprouting teapots, a ladder-arbour bathhouse, and of course a whole tribe of frogs in a variety of attitudes. These include mother and baby frogs, frogs in red and green, some frogs reclining by the pond and others dancing and spouting water. Visitors can follow a path around the gardens, through a rockery and over a tiny bridge to admire each scene. Helen and her husband John were the former owners of the Laundry that used to be on Yorke and Cumberland Sts, Katoomba. They made the reluctant decision to demolish the laundry after a series of break-ins caused extensive damage, but have rescued and recycled some of the building materials, including the bricks that once made up the original coal boiler, and instead of holding sheets and towels, the gal-pipe shelving is now supporting some of the beautiful rose-bushes that Helen has rescued from building sites from as far away as Gwandalan.

A whole troupe of gnomes that were part of a deceased estate at Cootamundra have recently ended their travels in Helen’s garden, after a brief stop-off at the Rotary Gnome Convention in Blaxland, and have set up home by a cluster of beautiful orchids. From there they can admire the tinwear chickens that sit happily in the shade of a beautiful roofed garden seat.“I’ve collected stuff from everywhere,” says Helen, with a smile. The Frogs and Friends Garden is at 23, The Mall Leura, and is open from October 3rd to 11th, from 9.30am to 4pm. Entry is $5 for adults, and free for children. Young Women’s Art Project The Young Women’s Art Space is an ongoing programme that runs at the Blue Mountains Women’s Health Centre every Thursday afternoon from 3.30 to 5.30 during the school terms. It is aimed at young women from 14 to 25, and runs alongside the Young Women’s Drop-in Health Clinic. The Art Space programme was developed 2 ½ years ago, and some of the young women have been attending since it began. Amy was the first person to join the group, and is still coming. “It’s a great to come here and do art with other people because you get feedback,” she says. Art Space is facilitated by Art Therapist, Gina Harrowell. The Women’s Health Centre provides the space and the equipment, and Gina provides materials and guidance for a core activity, but the women are free to either join in or do their own projects, or even to bring along a project they are working on at home. “The aim is for it to be a safe space for creativity, and connection with others” says Gina. “It also allows young women to access the BMWHC, in a kind of informal way, to make themselves familiar with what is on offer for them.” “Art Space is a place for me to connect with other women of the community for a lovely afternoon of caring, sharing , support and friendship” says Holly, one of the young women who attends. “It’s the bright spot of my week.”

The group has had artworks featured at International Women’s Day, and had a table at the launch of the Youth Card. Some of the women have www.theecho.net.au

been also been involved in other art projects at the BMWHC. But in Art Space there is no pressure for the young women to do anything other than enjoy the activities and the company, and newcomers are always welcome. Attendee Kate sums it up pretty well. “Coming to Art Space is something I always look forward to. Having the opportunity to create art in a loving, supportive, compassionate environment is so lovely”.

Climate Change Action Petition The Blue Mountains Greens are taking a message to Canberra that the Government needs to do more about the impact of climate change. In August 2009 the CSIRO modeling released at the Tourism Futures conference revealed the Blue Mountains is at a particularly acute risk. Greens members are collecting signatures on a petition that will be presented to the Australian Senate prior to the upcoming Copenhagen International Summit on Climate Change to send a message that Blue Mountains Communities want tougher Climate Action. People have been flocking to sign the petition because they want their voice, and the voice of their children, to be heard. Petitions can be signed at shopping precincts across the Blue Mountains over the next month. Contact the Greens at: convenor@ bluemountains.nsw.greens.org.au or 0422 759 688 October 2009

Relay Chairman, Ken Shaw said the committee was aiming to raise $15,000, and needed 30 teams to help achieve this target.“I really hope the people of the Upper Blue Mountain get behind this year’s Relay For Life. It’s a fun, family community event that everyone from individuals to businesses, schools and sporting groups can get involved in,” “Relay For Life is also an opportunity to remember those we have lost to cancer, celebrate survivors, and pledge to fight back against this terrible disease by leading a healthier lifestyle,” Mr Shaw said. The committee of dedicated volunteers from the local community will work in conjunction with Cancer Council NSW to stage the event at Katoomba Falls Reserve, Katoomba Falls. Leura CWA At the August meeting, the Leura Branch of the CWA decided where to allocate the funds raised this year. The group voted to donate to The C.W.A. Emergency Fund, Flying Doctor Fund, Associated Country Women of the World (A.C.W.W), Coins for Friendship, the C.W.A. Blue Mountains Group, Youth off the Streets and Medical Research. This amounted to $4,500. Allocations to the local area were discussed at the September meeting, and it was decided to give North Katoomba Public School $500, the hydro-

therapy pool at the hospital $500, and Blue Mountains Cancer Help $1,000, with other local charities still being considered. Robyn Yates from Cancer Help came to the meeting to express her gratitude, and to speak about how her organization will use the money. Cancer Help provides support for local residents who have been diagnosed with cancer. They facilitate a network of support groups for both patients and their families, and provide access to a range of complemetary therapies, including massage and meditation. At the C.W.A. State Conference which was held at Broken Hill last May, pictures were shown how the A.C.W.W were helping the women in Papua New Guinea being taught how

to grow their own vegetables, also how to sew their own clothes, and it was nice to see the smiling faces. The CWA are putting together packages consisting of pins, needles, elastic, cotton, tape measures, scissors etc. to go to Head Office in Potts Point and these will go in the big container to be sent overseas. Anybody who is interested to join us in a cup of tea is always welcome. We meet each Monday morning at 10.30a.m, at the CWA Hall at 137 Megalong St, Leura. (just off Leura Mall: see the sign on the door). Margaret Muirhead (secretary) More information about the Country Women’s Association is on the website www.cwaofnsw.org.au
