Oran Park Probus Club

Exciting news from Oran Park Probus Club! Last month we attended our first face to face meeting since March! During the Covid-19 pandemic we have been staying connected with regular Zoom meetings and our monthly newsletter, the Probian. Due to the NSW Government Covid restrictions, the Club is unable to utilise its former venue, the NewLife Church at Oran Park. Instead, the October meeting of Oran Park Probus Club, well attended by the members, was held at Wests Lakeside Golf Club at Camden, under strict Covid rules, plenty of hand sanitiser and social distancing. The speaker, from the Australian Maritime Museum, talked about the Japanese midget submarine attack on Sydney Harbour in May,1942. The audience was engrossed as the true story unfolded with the aid of slides and original photographs. Lunch followed the close of the meeting, again well attended by the members. The aim of Probus, to promote fun, fellowship and friendship to retired and semi-retired people is back on track! Following this meeting, the committee will be looking at what sort of Covid safe activities we can look forward to. The next meeting of Oran Park Probus Club will be held on Tuesday, November 10 at Wests Lakeside Golf Club. All members and visitors must register with Oran Park Probus Club prior to attending. So if you are interested to come along to the next meeting or would like any further details about Oran Park Probus Club, please call the secretary Ph: 0410758755 or email oranpark@probusclubs .com.au r

FAITH – ST MARY MACKILLOP CATHOLIC PARISH ORAN PARK

Article Written + Submitted by: Fr David Catterall MTh - Parish Priest @ St Mary MacKillop Catholic Parish Oran Park P: 02 4648 2226 W: www.marymackillopparish.org.au A: 94 Oran Park Drive, Oran Park NSW 2570 Facebook: www.facebook.com/oranparkparish Twitter: www.twitter.com/oranparkparish "Our experience during this period of lockdown has starkly reminded us that we are communal beings. We are made for relationships with others". This statement, taken from a reflection I came across from a priest in Hobart, is so true. You and I are communal beings, and we are made for relationships - for community - with one another. As cases of community transmission of COVID-19 fall, the faith community of St Mary MacKillop Catholic Parish that I am privileged to serve and lead looks forward to a change in restrictions, founded on medical advice, that will allow us to enter into a 'new normal'. Clearly we won't be able to gather in the large numbers like we did prior to the start of this pandemic, however we still look forward to 're-entry' opportunities to 'be community' and 'in communion' with God and one another through weekend worship. We will begin with the re-introduction of the celebration of 5pm Saturday Vigil Mass (that will continue to be livestreamed) and 10am Sunday Mass at our Southern Mass Centre at Oran Park and 8am Sunday Mass at our Northern Mass Centre at Leppington. These Masses will be open to a limited number of attendees, who (as is already happening with our current 9.30am Sunday Mass at Leppington) will need to pre-register and follow the protocols set down in our COVIDSAFE plan. More news about these 're-entry' gatherings for worship and prayer - including the way to sign up for these Masses, and to assist in ministries that will be needed to make these Masses possible - will be announced on our parish Facebook page: facebook.com/ oranparkparish. Hope for Kids At NewLife we think that every kid needs hope - especially in a year like this one. We believe that hope is best found in Jesus as we come to know and love Him. Jesus had a simple plan for everyone - love God and love your neighbour - you can’t get more helpful than that. You may be aware that Scripture (or SRE) has been suspended in Oran Park Public School due to COVID restrictions. In light of that, I thought it might be helpful to know where you can find input for the children who might be missing out. If you’ve got a child in Primary School we run a Friday afternoon group called JCrew from 4-5:30pm up at the church. It’s a fun afternoon for kids from Kindy to Year 5. They play games, do some craft activity, have a healthy afternoon tea, and engage with a story of Jesus’s life in discussion groups. It’s open to all and $2 covers the food and materials. If your child is in Years 6-12 NewLifeYouth might be more their thing. Youth runs on a Friday from 6:30-8pm (also up at the church) and is designed to provide space to hang out and build community. Each night includes discussion that helps our young adults see how the Bible relates to the very real challenges of their world. Of course, on Sunday we also run programs for our kids - maybe not the Sunday School you might remember! We use multimedia, drama, craft, and games, to help our children find out who Jesus is and take hope and comfort from His love for them. Kids from 2 years old through to Year 5 are welcome at 9:30am. Could your kids use some hope? They would be very welcome at our COVID Safe gatherings across the week. See you soon!

Two Thumbs Up for Gregory Hills FC GLENMORE PARK | PENRITH

Marie Grima at your service

Gregory Hills FC have just completed a successful first season in the Macarthur Football Association Competition. There were 133 registered players making up 16 teams from the Under 6’s to Under 10’s, including two all girl’s teams. Renato Cocchietto, Club President of Gregory Hills FC could not have been any prouder of the local club’s inaugural season. “The first season was much shorter than what we had initially expected, thanks to COVID. However, it has turned out to still be a wonderful shorter season. It was great to be able to get out and see our teams play and to get to know them. Players would see me out and about and could not wait to be able to share how their games had been” Renato explained to the Oran Park Gazette. The support for Gregory Hills FC as a new club from both the local community and the Macarthur Football Association has been big. Many of their club sponsors are interested in wanting to sponsor again next year. Players have enjoyed taking the field each game and were excited to be able to hold an extra round of games at home at the newly established Cunningham Park. Parents and families of the players regularly commented about how they loved the family feel of the club and the sense of community there. “The club is planning to grow for the 2021 season. We will have teams from the Under 6’s to the Under 17’s. With keen interests from Mums and Dads, we are looking at possibly having two adult teams. By slowly growing over the next few years, we will be able to keep the club’s community and family feel to it” said Renato. If you are interested in becoming part of this family/ community orientated club, head to their website at www. gregoryhillsfc.org.au or find them on Facebook. “We are always looking for sponsors and volunteers to join Gregory Hills FC. Players will be able to register in January 2021, so keep an eye out online for more details to come” ended Renato.

Get Your Mower Running

Did you know that they race ride-on mowers? Well, you do now, and we have a club right here in the Macarthur, with Mower Mania Ride-on Mower Sports forming just 5 years ago. The local club holds monthly race events at different venues, which include Thirlmere and Luddenham. They have their own test days at their home track as well as public events as they take place. Members travel around regional areas, performing for the racegoers eager to watch these adrenalin-charged speedsters. “We race all brands of mowers, mostly older ones, that are modified to make them go faster and be safe to ride. As we are going much faster than the mowing speeds (up to 80 kph is common), we have a set of guidelines to ensure that all mowers are closely matched for performance in their respective classes” said Greg Orford, President of Mower Mania Ride-on Mower Sports. “I’ve been racing ride-on mowers for over 8 years now. I saw them at an agricultural show and thought, ‘I am going to do that’, so it all started from there” added Greg. Mower racing is made very affordable as they keep modifications under control, keeping costs down whilst still getting them to go fast. “The thrill of setting up a mower and getting out on a track for a race is awesome. You’re out there with half a dozen others, doing a warmup lap, gridding up and waiting for the flag to drop. Then, the adrenalin takes over. Before you know it, 8 laps are done, and you feel great. It’s loads of fun for all ages – Mums and Dads, boys, and girls” smiled Greg to the Oran Park Gazette. If you would like to join a growing sport, get out and about meeting new people whilst enjoying the thrill of motor racing on a budget, call Greg on 0410 599505 or Daniel on 0451 473266. You can also find them on Facebook by searching ‘Mower Mania’. r

Team Sarah and George All the Way!

Live. Pest free.

An innovative health-centred approach to pest management Servicing the Macarthur region for over 20 years

This season of The Block, Australia’s most successful renovation reality program, features Oran Park’s own Sarah and George Bragias. Team Sarah and George, who have been tasked with renovating House 2 in the style of the 1940’s, have been working hard and showing just why they are one of the power couples on The Block 2020. Sarah and George recently took some time out of their busy renovating schedules to chat about their life changing experiences on the popular show. “We have been truly blessed. We never thought that something like this would ever happen to us. It’s been a crazy experience and we’ve loved it all” explained Sarah to the Oran Park Gazette. “It’s been one of the hardest things and best things at the same time. It’s an experience you could only ever dream about. We have enjoyed every second” added George. The Macarthur couple have lived in Oran Park for the past two years. Both have family members here and have grown up close to the area. “It has always felt like home to us. We found our house when visiting relatives. There’s so much to love about the area. Walking in the parks, to shopping and the restaurants. Frango’s is the best” smiled Sarah and George. They are fan favourites this season and are thankful for all the support that they have received along the way. “We’d both like to give a big thank you to everyone. We have been inundated with support and it’s been amazing. People have been stopping us in the streets and we appreciate it. It’s been a lovely experience” they said. So, what have they learnt about renovating whilst on The Block? “We’ve learnt how far you can go if you push yourself and believe that you can do it. Don’t be afraid to step outside the box. If you fail, it can be fixed. Have fun and enjoy the process. “It’s not always about being extravagant. You can lift a room with simple, cost effective ideas. Embrace your ideas and be comfortable and safe in what makes you feel good. Own your personality. Don’t be scared” were Sarah and George’s words of advice. r The Block 2020’s Sarah and George | Image: Nine Network

November 2020 www.oranparkgazette.com.au

Metro Apartments, Oran Park Town Begins Construction The recently announced Metro Apartments have started construction. Located within the Oran Park Town Centre, opposite the planned train station, the central location is part of a carefully master-planned design by Greenfields Development Company in conjunction with Camden Council. Luisa Roccisano who has bought one of the apartments said, “The Metro sits alongside Julia Creek Reserve, so has a lovely connection to this wonderful greenspace, and of course, being opposite the future railway station will be very convenient”. Metro is a 53-apartment complex over seven stories that has proved very popular with the community. “There has been particular interest in the ground floor apartments with their courtyards and of course, the Penthouses and upper levels with views to the Northern lake system are proving popular” said Mark Perich, Director, Greenfields Developments who have built Oran Park Town. “Several apartments have already been sold with the current government incentives of around $69,000 being a significant factor” he went on to mention. Construction is scheduled to complete in early 2022. The architects are Allen, Jack and Cottier and the builders are Richard Crookes, who built TRN House the new office building that sits alongside the Metro. Michael Ryan from Richard Crookes said “As this is a premium development with sophisticated finishes and fit-out, we have a slightly longer than normal construction phase to ensure a quality outcome. Because the project will employ up-to 550 workers, over 40 trades throughout the 18-month building program, attention to detail is paramount”. Jeff Webb, Oran Park Town Sales Manager said, “Early interest in the Metro Apartments and subsequent off-the-plan sales have been very encouraging. We have received excellent customer feedback on Metro from its premium position in the heart of the developing OPT Town Centre, to the stylish architecture and quality of internal finishes and inclusions”. The Metro display suite is open and located in the OPT Sales Office on the corner of Peter Brock Drive and Oran Park Town Drive. “I’d highly recommend to anyone who has an interest in purchasing to pop down and take advantage of the Government incentives on offer, this can be as much as $69,000” said Mr. Webb. r Feature Article: Artist’s impression | Image/Article: Greenfields Developments

Listening Can Be Difficult For Kids

It seems like the kids don’t listen or do as they are asked. Sometimes we as adults need to be clearer in our communication. Calm is also handy, as the calmer we are, the calmer our kids are. Parenting Strategies That Tend Not To Work... • When we focus on telling our kids ‘don’t’, ‘stop’, ‘no’, ‘quit’, and ‘not’, sometimes they disregard the ‘don’t’ etc. Or, sometimes, the ‘don’t’ can be like a dare. • Telling the child what not to do, for example, ‘don’t jump on the lounge’, ‘don’t hit your brother’. • Yelling across the room. • Yelling, hitting, name calling, put-downs. • Asking a question if you want the child to do something, for example, ‘would you...?’, ‘can you…?’, ‘do you…?’, ‘will you…?’ Your Challenge Use clear calm instructions to give kids instructions and encourage them to listen: • Say child’s name, get close, get eye contact, touch child gently; • Tell the child what to do OR • Tell the child what s/he is doing wrong and what to do instead. REMEMBER to say ‘thanks for listening’ or ‘thanks for doing as I asked’. If the child does not do as asked after two requests, issue a Consequence. It is often a good idea to give the child a calming down skill in your Clear, Calm Instruction. Example “you are shouting at me, (pause) take a deep breath and think about how you can speak to me in a calm way and with respect”. Wait calmly and quietly for the child’s response. When the child has spoken with you calmly, say “thank you for being calm and respectful”. Parents often say that this strategy is very simple but the hardest thing for them is to be calm. Your high emotional reaction is related to your values. Values are essential to guide your life, but are you going to coach/guide your child in values or force them down their throat? You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. To calm yourself take some deep breaths, and think of a happy memory (for example, a time when the child was cute or loving, etc). The aim in any parenting strategy is to teach your child how to be better, and parents have to role model that. r

With no physical events taking place due to the current pandemic, donations can still be made online. “This year, we have a fundraising page set up for Pink Up Oran Park in October. We encourage anyone wanting to help to get behind this important cause to help raise funds to support individuals and families experiencing breast cancer through the McGrath Foundation” said Sudha Sudharshan, Organiser of Pink Up Oran Park in October. “We would especially like to thank Mark Perich and team from Oran Park Town for donating $2,000” added Sudha. FROM THEWORD EDITOR THE LAST We are at the pointy end of the year. Historically, November is the nose dive into all the upcoming Christmas festivities. This year has definitely been a challenging one, and it is without doubt that the Christmas Season will carry with it significant impacts marking the year that was. It’s important we try to come together and consolidate the bumpy journey’s we have all experienced in one way or another and celebrate that we made it through, that we’re here to tell the stories. There are plenty of great new things happening in and across our community, despite the impacts of COVID through the rubble, beautiful things are beginning to blossom. We have plenty of great reading this month, why not find yourself a nice spot in the garden with a cuppa and your favourite local paper? ‘The happiest people in life are the givers, not the getters’ Enjoy Your Community News.
