The DA for Oran Park’s second tavern was lodged in July. The tavern will be located in the Employment Zone, opposite the fire station site near the roundabout on Dick Johnson Drive and Steward Drive. The tavern will be run by the same operator of the Oran Park Hotel. It will include an in-house brewery and a smoked meat concept restaurant. The operators are looking to create a homely, neighbourhood-style pub, while the Oran Park Hotel will be a premium venue with a high-end steakhouse, gold class cinema and rooftop bar. There are very lengthy approval processes for taverns, typically in excess of 2 years. Construction of this Tavern will commence after the opening of the Oran Park Hotel. r Artist’s impression of Oran Park Tavern | Image/Article: Greenfields Development Company

Commercial Property Leads the Charge Oran Park’s first office building, TRN House, has sold out. Such was the need; Greenfields Developments have had to rush to start the next building – probably this month! The new building, 3 Fordham Way is a sister building in design and finish to TRN House. 3 Fordham Way shares many features and benefits with TRN House including a connected underground carpark, central courtyard, and landscaped garden areas. Richard Crookes Constructions have been appointed the successful contractor. “We’ve started taking initial enquiries from businesses wishing to purchase and lift their profile” said Jeff Webb, Greenfields Development Co. Sales Manager. “The much-heralded new commercial building is just the beginning of the next phase of deliverables in Oran Park. After our new commercial building commences, we will start the next residential apartment building, to compliment the Metro Apartments which is nearly sold out. Soon after will be the Leisure Centre, the major expansion of the Podium, the Tavern, and a hotel complex – so the next 2-3 years is going to be very exciting” Mick Owens, General Manager of Greenfields Development Co. explained. As the Oran Park Town community continues to grow, more and more people are wanting the opportunity to work closer to home. This new office building (3 Fordham Way), the development of the Employment Zone along the Northern Road and the expansion of businesses into the area is making this a reality. v Artist’s impression of 3 Fordham Way | Image/Article: Greenfields Development Company

Macarthur’s Eva Grados is living the dream, after securing a lead role in the film, A Second Chance: Rivals, which can now be seen on Netflix. The local student plays the role of Alkira, an elite gymnast. A Second Chance: Rivals is the sequel to A Second Chance and is about the journey of Maddy, who missed her chance at the Olympics because of injury and has now become a coach for the country girls in gymnastics. She coaches the three elite gymnasts Alkira, Tess and Taylor. They all have issues to overcome to make it to the championships. Eva secured one of the lead roles after submitting an audition. “It was filmed in January 2019. I was just about to start Year 6 and missed the first 2 weeks of school as it was filmed in Adelaide. I sent an audition video to Clay Glen, the Director. Because I’m in New South Wales and the movie was being made in South Australia, I wasn’t able to come in for an audition” said Eva to the Oran Park Gazette. “After a couple of months, he facetimed me and offered me the role. At first, I didn’t realise what was happening. I had watched the first movie so many times, I couldn’t believe that I was going to be in the sequel with a lead role” she continued. Eva’s experience with making A Second Chance: Rivals was very memorable. “I really enjoyed it. It was my first time on a big production, and it was a great experience working with an amazing cast and crew. I was able to work with AFI Award winner Natasha Wanganeen as my on-screen mum. We had early starts and long days, but I made some fantastic friendships and had a lot of fun” Eva explained. She handled the role of a gymnast in the film well and used a body double for some scenes. “While I love the sport of gymnastics, in the movie I completed only the basic elements, so for the most part we used a body double for the big routines”. Eva is currently working on three small projects soon to be released. Tori’s Country Journey Camden’s Tori Darke has had the experience of a lifetime, auditioning for The Voice, and performing live on stage with Keith Urban on television. Tori auditioned with the song, The Middle by Zedd, Maren Morris and Grey. Despite the coaches not turning, she was later joined by Keith Urban, one of the coaches for an impromptu duet. “It was seriously one of the most amazing and craziest moments of my life. It was so mind blowing and surreal. I couldn’t believe that it actually happened, but to see it all unfold on television was incredible,” said Tori. “Watching The Voice at home, I was so overwhelmed with emotion. I cried (happy tears) the whole time I was on air. It was a life and career changing moment for me and one I’ll be forever grateful to Keith Urban and The Voice for” she continued. She was approached by The Voice late last year about auditioning for Season 10. “I had taken a little break from music during 2019/2020 and decided to pursue a change of pace as a flight attendant. Then COVID hit, and I was stood down only 5 months after starting. It’s funny how things work out, because it only made me realise how much I loved and missed music. Auditioning for The Voice was my chance to get back into the music scene, and I’ll be forever grateful for that” Tori replied. Tori’s style of music is Contemporary Pop Country, “I love the likes of Shania Twain, Maren Morris, Carly Pearce, and of course the one and only Keith Urban. I’m a total sucker for a ballad”. Starting singing lessons at the age of 10 and beginning a professional career at 18, Tori has always loved music and singing as a child. “I never even imagined a different career as I grew up. My parents could hardly keep me quiet in the car when we were driving with the radio on. As I turned 10 years old, my parents decided to enrol me in singing lessons. That was 21 years ago now and I haven’t looked back. My love for music just keeps growing. In some ways I feel like I’m just getting started” she smiled. Looking ahead, Tori is focused on finishing the year on a high, “The rest of this year is going to be big. I have lots of new and exciting music being recorded right now and will be released later in the year. As soon as we come out of lockdown, I’ll be out and about touring the country and catching up with fans I haven’t been able to see for a long time. I can’t wait!”. The Voice continues 7.00pm on Channel 7 on Sunday night and 7.30pm on Monday. You can also catch up on Tori’s performance on 7Plus. v

Off-Leash Dog Parks Bringing Joy to our Furry Friends

Keeping Children Safe Online: What Are They Seeing? How do we prepare children to cross the road? We speak to them about the risks, we practise looking right and left, and we show them how to identify zebra crossings. In the beginning, we hold their hands and walk with them. Now consider, have you given as much thought to preparing your child to cross what is dubbed “the information superhighway” – the internet? In a time when social distancing is key to addressing the evolving public health issue of Covid-19, the internet allows children to learn, connect and create. However, going online is not risk-free. Over the next three articles, we explore three questions every parent must ask when their child uses the internet: 1. What are they seeing? 2. What are they doing? 3. Who are they talking to? According to eSafety research, most young people have viewed inappropriate content before the age of 17. Nearly half of children aged 9 to 16 regularly view sexual images. These images are most often viewed on either content-sharing apps such as Snapchat or Discord, or on live-streaming platforms such as TikTok or Periscope. How do you know what your child is seeing? Your first thought might be to maximise parental controls (and this is important), but the first step to online safety does not require technology. It is the simple, powerful but often under-estimated tool of parenting: Talking to your child. According to research from our national Centre to Counter Child Exploitation, only half of Australian parents regularly talk to their children about online safety. It is vital to create the space for your children to speak to you honestly about any concerns they have about their internet use. Here are some ways you can do this: • Be curious and supportive, learn about their favourite games or apps; • Talk to them about the risks of going online; • Problem-solve together what they might do if they see something scary or yucky online; • Avoid using the removal of devices as a behavioural consequence. For more information, visit the eSafety Commissioner’s website on https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents.

If you and your furry friend are wondering where you should exercise, why not try one of Camden Council’s offleash dog parks? Pet owners have 10 off-leash dog parks to try within the Camden area, including: • Bicentennial Equestrian Park, Camden Council (available before 10am and after 5pm, Monday to Sunday); • Rosevale Reserve, Narellan; • Rowland Avenue, Catherine Park; • River Road Reserve, Elderslie; • Burrell Road, Spring Farm; • Clifton Park, Arcadian Hills Estate, Clifton Drive, Cobbitty; • Silverton Street, Gregory Hills; • Holden Drive, Oran Park; • Howard Loop, Oran Park; and • Emerald Hills Boulevarde and Leslie Way, Emerald Hills. These facilities offer many benefits to the community. With each park being securely enclosed, they provide dogs the opportunity to exercise safely, as well as the ability to learn to behave appropriately around other dogs. Mayor of Camden, Cr Therese Fedeli, said the off-leash dog parks were a great asset to the Camden area. “I love that our area has such a range of fantastic facilities, catering to all the different interests of our community members,” she said. “As we can see from our much-loved Paws in the Park event each year, our residents take a lot of care and pride in their furry friends. They’re part of the family for many! That’s why it means so much to provide some great offleash parks. “I’d also like to encourage our residents to ensure their pet is registered and microchipped. You can speak with your vet about microchipping and can register your pet online. “While our off-leash dog parks are a great way to get out and about and keep active, let’s please be mindful of the COVID-19 restrictions in place – make sure you keep your distance from others and do not leave the house if you have any flu-like symptoms. “Let’s also ensure we respect fellow park users by making sure our dogs behave”. The current stay at home orders issued by NSW Government apply to Greater Sydney, which includes Camden. It is important to understand which restrictions are in place for you. To see the full list of current COVID-19 restrictions, go to nsw.gov.au/covid-19/rules/greater-sydney For more information on off-leash dog parks and microchipping your pets, go to camden.nsw.gov.au/pets/ r A place for dogs to exercise | Image/Article: Camden Council

Gabrielle's Olympics Debut

Harrington Park’s Gabrielle Plain has just returned home from Japan, after making her Olympic debut for the Aussie Spirit Women’s Softball Team at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. 22-year-old Gabrielle was part of the Aussie Spirit Women’s Softball Team that finished their Olympic campaign in 5th place with a 1-4 win/ loss record. “It was an incredible experience that I didn't believe I would ever have the opportunity to partake in when Softball was removed from the Olympics in the past. The journey, the destination, the energy, all of the aspects, I am just so ecstatic that I had this experience, and I will remember it for a lifetime” said Gabrielle to the Oran Park Gazette. Gabrielle and her teammates competed against Japan, gold medal defending champions, in the first event of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Despite spectators being unable to attend the games, millions of Australians were cheering on the Aussie Spirit from their lounge rooms around the world. “It was both like and unlike any tournament that I have ever competed in. The teams we played were teams that we had come head-to-head with before in World Championships, Japan Cups and other international tournaments held throughout the years. At the Olympics, however, it's not just your sport and countries that play it. It's all countries and sports coming together to showcase their abilities and compete at the highest level, all the while, cheering on other athletes from your country in sports that you may not have had a lot of interaction within the past” reflected Gabrielle. She explained that it was hard to choose just one highlight of her Olympic experience, “I don't think there was ever a specific moment that I could pinpoint as a highlight. The entire experience was a highlight, with highs and lows all coming together. Being able to wear the green and gold, meeting other athletes who I had watched on TV and never dreamed of meeting, competing both on and off the diamond, cheering on my teammates, there really is no single moment”. For now, Gabrielle will enjoy time at home before returning to the US. “After a short break at home, I'll be heading back to the USA to graduate and compete in my last year at the University of Washington” she said. “Thank you so much to my family, friends, teammates and coaches who have supported me at every turn and helped me to achieve so many goals. They have helped me in so many ways, from hours of training to emotional support, to keeping me loving the game at every step of the way” Gabrielle finished. r Feature Article: [Cover] Gabrielle in action at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics [Above] Gabrielle (R) training at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics | Images: Softball Australia

For registration details and costs, visit Little Athletics NSW online at https://lansw.com.au/ and select ‘Camden’. “We are planning to compete on a Friday night from the 1st of October through to 25th of March at Onslow Oval in Camden, potentially moving to the brand-new track at the Narellan Sports Hub early in 2022. Camden Athletic Club was formed by Reverend Keith Brodie in 1931. It was disrupted by World War 2 and re-emerged from 1947 to 1959. The club was reestablished in 1975 with around 100 athletes. Since then, they celebrate their 45th year and have grown to an average of 450 athletes each year. “Despite a very disrupted year with COVID last season, we had 43 athletes qualify for the State Championships. We even had a senior athlete come extremely close for selection in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics” Marnie explained. Oran Park Probus Club

Probus Clubs throughout Australia and New Zealand promote friendship, fellowship, and fun among retired and semi-retired people in the community through regular meetings, activity groups, tours, and outings. Although all meetings and activities of Oran Park Probus Club are currently suspended due to the COVID-19 lockdown, our members will continue to attend monthly ZOOM meetings with speakers who are happy to make a presentation via ZOOM. We listened to a very interesting presentation last month about the Campbelltown Hospital Redevelopment and recently several members attended a Craft group chat with knitting needles or crochet hooks hard at work! Members are invited to an upcoming ZOOM Coffee and Chat. We hope to see a variety of coffee mugs on display for a ‘show and tell’. Whilst it may be a while before there can be any large group activities or meetings, the Oran Park Probus Club Committee will continue to hold meetings and discuss possible activities that may be undertaken when restrictions are eased, and it is safe to do so. To find out more about Probus or Oran Park Probus Club, please email oranpark@probusclubs.com.au or Ph: 0410 758755. FAITH – NEWLIFE ANGLICAN ORAN PARK

Life Beyond Boundaries There’s a woman in the Bible who meets Jesus. A woman with a dubious background, from the wrong religious group - a social outcast from her town. What does God’s Son have to say as they meet around a dusty well? Jesus takes the first step - he asks if she’d allow Him a drink. The woman is shocked and points out that, not only do rabbis not talk with women, but that as a Samaritan they had nothing in common. “How can you ask me for a drink?” Jesus isn’t deterred. Having gained her attention He says, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked Him, and he would have given you living water”. She asks, “Are you greater than our ancestors who gave us this well?” Jesus responded, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water, welling up to eternal life”. Jesus was offering salvation not a drink. His ‘water’ was a soul refreshing kind that didn’t need to be sought out in the heat of the day with a bucket. Instead, he was holding out life eternal - a spring of hope, refreshment, and new life that would take up residence inside her soul. How ‘thirsty’ are you getting in the midst of our lockdown life? We have boundaries between friendships, boundaries for exercise, boundaries for our LGAs. What if there was someone who could offer you refreshment of heart. Would you be ready to cross boundaries for that? Maybe the first boundary is coming to church. These days you can’t darken a door - but you can click a link. Find Jesus’s offer of thirst-quenching life at www.YouTube.com/newlifeoranparklive 9:30am each week. FAITH – ST MARY MACKILLOP CATHOLIC PARISH ORAN PARK

Article Written + Submitted by: Fr David Catterall MTh - Parish Priest @ St Mary MacKillop Catholic Parish Oran Park P: 02 4648 2226 W: www.marymackillopparish.org.au A: 94 Oran Park Drive, Oran Park NSW 2570 Facebook: www.facebook.com/oranparkparish Twitter: www.twitter.com/oranparkparish Recently I received a flyer from CatholicCare Wollongong entitled “Managing Covid Fatigue”. As the flyer says: “This is a challenging time, and while physical health and safety is paramount, so is your mental health and safety. ‘Covid fatigue’ has been described worldwide as a state of exhaustion caused by the long-term effects of COVID-19 and the changes it has caused to every aspect of our lives. Our bodies are well adapted to handle temporary stress. Many people even thrive with temporary stress. But when the stress is constant and unrelenting, such as that which COVID-19 has brought with it, the pressure can become overwhelming”. As the flyer went onto say: “It is important to be aware of the signs of ‘Covid fatigue’, which include irritability, anxiety, low energy, restlessness, feelings of hopelessness and dread, or feeling like there is nothing to look forward to. While it is absolutely understandable you may be experiencing 'Covid fatigue', it’s important to realise there are number of helpful tips and behavioural adjustments that will help you deal with and overcome it”. The flyer identified some of these tips and adjustments such as: - Identify and practice self-care strategies like Prayer. It is important to maintain your spiritual life to help you to feel more grounded. - Look after your physical health. Eat sensibly. Get regular exercise and keep active. Sleep well. Try and keep to a routine and prioritise sleep, as the body needs good sleep to restore itself. Drink plenty of water. Get fresh air and sun if possible. - Do things that bring you joy such as reading a book, listen to your favourite music or podcast, cook, garden, watch a movie, organise or fix things you have been meaning to get around to for a while, whatever brings you a feeling of contentment. Please do not forget that during these challenging times, there is help available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Checking in on family and friends is important during these difficult times. Construction of Kolombo Reserve at Oran Park is now complete. The Reserve was partially completed and opened to the public in April, with the sports fields and main club house handed over to Camden Council and the Oran Park Rovers Football Club while work continued on the remaining facilities in the Reserve. The remainder of the construction works have now been completed. The construction fencing has been removed, allowing public access to the remaining parts of the Reserve, including the allabilities playground and multi-purpose courts. FROM THEWORD EDITOR THE LAST Spring is finally here! It’s hard to believe that the month of September is already upon us. Where has this year gone? We are in the midst of the lockdown across Greater Sydney; however, things are looking positive. The Premier has announced that restrictions should be eased by the end of the month, as the COVID-19 vaccination rates increase. Never has it been more important than now to support local business. Whether it’s a home delivered meal from a café or restaurant or a trade/service that you need for home, businesses in our community need our help. Get behind them and show your support where you can. The 2020 Tokyo Olympics have come and gone, and the Paralympic Games have begun. Millions across the country have been cheering on our Aussie athletes as they take on the world’s best. This month’s stories are filled with inspiration and hope – ‘hope’ that we can all finish the year positively, safely and healthily together. Stay kind, it makes you beautiful. Time to catch up on all the latest happenings in Your Community News.
