The annual Hawkesbury Canoe Classic is on the 23rd/24th October. It is a fun paddle with a serious purpose to raise money for the Arrow Bone Marrow Transplant Foundation to give hope to people suffering from diseases treatable by bone marrow and adult stem cell transplants. Nathan is looking forward to the challenge but is already planning the daunting task of paddling across Bass Strait, a journey of about 10 days. Compared to that, the moonlit paddle down the Hawkesbury will seem very easy!

And guess what, how many didn’t have a complete backup of all their important stuff? Sadly, for the home PC user, most of them. I hear it all the time, “I knew I should back up, but I wasn’t sure how to do it.” The fact that it could take hundreds of dollars to, maybe, salvage that data doesn’t add any comfort. Graham Hoade, author of ‘I wish I’d backed up’ has produced a simple step by step guide to doing your own backup. “I’ve been in the computer industry for over 20 years and knew I needed to give the non-technical person a hand here. It’s not difficult but you need a few tips to get it right.” This book shows you how to set up an automated system to take the worry, and mystery, out of the process at a fraction of the cost of getting a technician to do it. You’ll learn something about your computer along the way too. A computer disaster is heartbreaking.

Heartmoves Fitness for the older woman As Jeanette Treloar reached her mid seventies she said “I became interested in the idea of fitness for the older woman. I realised that the general idea of fitness did not address our needs. We don’t want to run a marathon or lift great weights; we need to be able to get into a low cupboard, carry our shopping, cut our toenails and all the other difficult things we do. The idea of writing a book grew on me and in 2008 I decided to do a Certificate 3 and 4 in Fitness. The more I learnt the more it

Young Achiever in Tourism Award At the Blue Mountains Tourism Awards held in August, Michael Brischetto of The Carrington Hotel won the Young Achiever in Tourism Award. Michael works very hard in developing The Carrington Hotel business, but also volunteers on the Boards of Blue Mountains Tourism, the Winter Magic Festival and is the instigator behind many other community events. He is full of energy and enthusiasm for the Blue Mountains as a sustainable tourist destination, and a fitting role model for other young people in the area. Michael lives locally with his wife and 2 children. And, as a family, the Brischetto’s are very much involved with the community.

Brad’s Garage

‘You gotta love what you do’ If you are looking for someone with old fashioned mechanical know how, coupled with customer care then Brad’s Garage is there for you. Brad Holzmann is building up a solid reputation in Katoomba, having been established at 59 Megalong Street, opposite the bus depot for over 5 years.

The Holzmann name is well recognised and Brad is the third generation mechanic supported by his Dad Harry Holzmann, proprietor of Blue Mountains Fuel Injection. The workshop in Katoomba was a natural progression from Medlow Bath (where Harry’s father, Fred had the Mazda Dealership for over 25 years), as extra space was desired to have a dyno in the workshop. So what exactly makes Brad rather special? Winning Mazda’s Apprentice of the Year when he was 17 and the desire to look after his customers with “Old Fashioned Service” genuinely caring for their needs. Over 2 years ago John Harris joined the team. It’s also worth mentioning a bit about the only dyno in the upper Mountains… Brad uses the very best, Dyno Dynamics dyno, to test and sort out any gremlins in EFI cars as well as Carbi Cars. The dyno itself is portable and he takes every chance to take it out of the shop, on weekends, to go to car shows to setup dyno clinics. The team from Street Commodores was very grateful for his recent contribution at the recent Cruise For Charity that helped raise $45,000. Brad, Harry and John are able to work

on a wide variety of cars with regular logbook servicing, general repairs and maintenance. The invaluable experience dealing with different makes, early model cars as well as late model modern cars enables them to properly diagnose any problems.

A Circus Festival… Cirquinox’10 is the Blue Mountains’ very own circus festival and is held in the grounds of the Norman Lindsay Gallery in Faulconbridge on Sunday 19th September. Cirquinox will provide an amazing array of performances and activities for everyone in the family. Festival tickets also include entry to the beautiful Norman Lindsay Gallery.Time: 10:00am – 4:00pm Bookings: $17.50 per adult, $12.50 per concession, $10.00 per child and $40 for a family pass (two children or one adult and three children) To pre-purchase your tickets, contact Cirquinox’s partner, Weirder the Better on 4782 9806 or email: sales@ weirderthebetter.com.au. The BBQ will be manned by Wentworth Fall Lions Club.

Foster Carers Needed Is it possible to trust when you’ve always been let down?

We believe it is. YOU CAN HELP THEM to believe it too by becoming a foster carer.... Barnardos Temporary Family Care (TFC) Program, Penrith urgently needs Short Term and Weekend Carers for children 0 – 12 years in the Blue Mountains, Penrith and Hawkesbury areas.
