Aaron Probyn Director

sales@aaronprobyn.com

www.aaronprobyn.com

Aaron Probyn brand was founded on the principle that good design lasts a lifetime. Our cohesive range of beautifully designed products is intended to be both useful and emotionally engaging. Our objective is to create objects that enrich the everyday, using the finite raw materials we have on this Earth consciously and wisely.

4

As a design practice, we believe in designing products to last a lifetime, and their packaging to leave no trace. We use the finite raw materials we have on this earth wisely and hope that whoever purchases our product would enjoy it for years to come, and potentially pass it on to another generation.

We ensure the packaging of our products has as little impact on the environment as possible. We are reducing box sizes and print use, removing single plastic use where possible, and using an unbleached recyclable card.

Ali Tomlin Ceramics

ali@alitomlin.com

www.alitomlin.com

My work is a collection of thrown, uncluttered porcelain forms. I apply my marks and colours in a painterly style, aiming to create imperfect and unpredictable marks. Most decorating is carried out on the wheel to convey a feeling of movement and spontaneity. I use a bold, but muted, palette on the white clay, giving the hard porcelain the appearance of softness and my work is often described as calm.

10

My background in graphics and branding informs how my work has a variety of designs but sits together as a cohesive collection, whether as lighting or tableware or display. I work with galleries, interior designers and through direct commissions.

11
“I leave most of the surfaces unglazed, which lends a paper-like, tactile quality to the pieces.”

Circular&Co

hello@circularandco.com

www.circularandco.com

We’re Circular&Co. and we are striving for global change, by making Circular Design the new standard. Together we can build a waste-free, endless world. By using waste materials to make new products which are then fully recyclable, we can reuse the same materials over and over, closing the circle. This drastically reduces CO2 emissions, stops consumption of the planet’s precious resources, and eliminates pollution; the three core challenges humanity faces.

28

Every design process we embark on is built, from the bottom up, on the principles of Circular Design. By definition, this means they have the most positive impact on the natural world possible.

All the time, it’s the only way to innovate and stay ahead of the market. Just one example we are currently working on and developing with partners is new SMART Reusable Packaging, with functions that can store your personalised information and communicate your favourite drink of choice to coffee machines.

29
“We believe a company’s true environmental impact and legacy is through the products they put into the world.”
30 Coniston Stonecraft ltd
Donnelly
info@conistonstonecraft.co.uk www.Conistonstonecraft.co.uk
Brendan
Managing Director

MADE IN THE HEART OF THE LAKE DISTRICT, UK

We have been manufacturing on the slopes of Coniston Old Man for nearly half a century, you could say we’re hefted to this landscape.

We only use locally quarried stone, Westmorland sea green, Brathay blue/ grey or Baycliff limestone, it’s all part of our attempt to keep our eco footprint as small as possible, we use hydro electric power from the beck running by our workshops and cool our polishers and cutters using that same beck water rather than oil. We do not use imported Brazilian or Chinese slate for 2 reasons,

1. It’s been transported halfway around the world

2. It’s not as good – on so many levels. We re a small craft company that can tell you who made each piece and which quarry the stone came from, we believe that working hard and doing the right thing will help us keep producing beautiful pieces for another half century.

31
Our story is one of Graft and Craft, we work hard at producing beautiful objects from our local stone, using the skills of our forebears to reflect our pride.

Coolicon Lighting Ltd

Rachel Naysmith

sales@cooliconlighting.com

www.cooliconlighting.com

Handmade in England since 1933, at Coolicon Lighting we use traditional handcraft processes to batch produce our heritage lighting products with the up-most care and attention to authentic time-honoured practices.

Our craft production processes have stayed the same over the 90 years since Coolicon lampshades were first produced, but the rise of digital technologies has brought many advancements to complement the brand for modern living.

Modern metal cutting technology allows us to create components more efficiently due to precision techniques, reducing waste by over 30%. The innovative, vented galleries of the shade substantially reduced the temperature of 1930s light bulbs thus increasing their longevity, an attribute maintained today that benefits current LED technology.

The creation of our website and increase in digital communications broadened Coolicon Lighting’s reach to outside of the UK and into global markets for the first time in brand history.

33
“Made from high quality materials we know that, when looked after, our lampshades will last a lifetime.”

info@donnawilson.com

www.donnawilson.com

As a forerunner of the contemporary craft movement, Donna Wilson has remained true to her principles, using traditional techniques and locally based suppliers wherever possible.

Having recently established her own micro knitting factory, the Knit Shop, in Dundee, Donna has been able to take the reins of her own production processes, while investing in the regeneration of the textile industry in Scotland.

Our Dundee Knit Shop has two state-of-the-art Shima Seiki knitting machines on-site, allowing us to sample and manufacture at scale. All of our products are finished by hand – our knitted lambswool creatures are still made using the same techniques (hand sewn and embroidered) as when Donna was making each one herself.

We are constantly looking for ways to make our products, and processes, more sustainable. Wherever possible, we use natural materials which can be returned to the earth at the end of their natural life cycle. We ‘mulch’ the knitted offcuts of our production process into an all-natural fibre which we use as stuffing for our creatures and as a component of our ‘Make Your Own’ craft kits.

All our pottery is made from creamcoloured earthenware – a traditional Staffordshire product which we make in our own factory in Stoke-on-Trent, the home of British pottery. At our factory most of the production work is still done by hand, and all of the pieces are individually hand-decorated, so every one is very slightly different – and our spongeware is always signed by the person who decorated it.

Little Beau Sheep celebrates the best of British wool through a unique range of hand-made laundry and body care products. From signature wool laundry dryer balls to felted wool soaps and laundry fragrance, the collection offers an innovative eco-friendly take on everyday cleaning tasks.

Our dryer balls are handmade in Yorkshire - Reusable, lasting for 1000s of loads, they soften clothes naturally, reduce drying times and the need for fabric softener so you can do away with disposable dryer sheets. They are also much quieter and more environmentally friendly than the plastic alternatives.

Our products display the “Shepherd’s crook” to indicate that the wool can be traced back to British farms. This not only supports our local farming industry, but also minimises that air-miles involved in the production of this product.

“Wool is the original sustainable ecoproduct. It’s natural and sustainable and can be grown with minimal environmental impact.”

Margaret O’Rorke Lighting Ltd

lucinda.blythe@gmail.com

www.castlight.co.uk

Margaret O’Rorke works in translucent porcelain. She uses the unique nature of the material to convey a calm peaceful atmosphere. She is an artist, a potter and a lighting engineer. Her lights are sensual and expressive, enhancing architectural spaces. Her designs possess restraint and purity making her lights wholly modern.

72

Wanting to maintain a lively form I throw the translucent porcelain model on my potter’s wheel in my studio. The form is left to dry, and then low fired. The model then goes to the ceramics company, based in Stoke-on-Trent where the mold will be made and the light will be manufactured.

I work in porcelain and my lights are high fired to 1300C, a process which makes the fine translucent porcelain material vitrified and indestructible. The lights will last forever with careful handling.

All my lights are illuminated using the latest LED technology. I use a wide range of LED bulbs for individual lights, each one is incorporated within the design of the specific translucent porcelain light.

Selbrae House

We are an established, independent, family business, that creates elegant, durable and meaningfully made products with their design and manufacture rooted in Scotland.

In our commitment to minimise our impact upon the environment, we are constantly reassessing our packaging, ensuring that we use recycled and recyclable materials wherever possible and creating a box which not only impresses when it’s received, but which looks good enough to be reused to store all manner of items for many years to come.

In 2017 we were introduced to laser printing. These high-spec machines are real workhorses, each capable of producing over 190 products per day. Emma our design director uploads her intricate hand-drawn designs into the machine’s operating system and a member of our manufacturing team loads the slate and oak pieces into the machine, which then uses a precision point laser to engrave the design onto the slate.

Skyeskyns Ltd

www.skyeskyns.co.uk

Skyeskyns is a business born from crofting and a passion for transforming a meat industry waste-product into durable and luxurious sheepskins using the traditional craft of tanning. We have been tanners and suppliers of sheepskins from the beautiful Isle of Skye for 40 years. Combining family, tradition, craftsmanship, natural fibres and style, we produce and source the highest quality of sheepskin and wool homewares.

We are a traditional sheepskin tannery and use mimosa tree bark tanning to produce our completely natural sheepskins.

We are an artisan business, working a small sustainable scale for our production. Our tree bark tanning mixes ancient techniques and modern sustainability, supplemented by our use of a reed bed for effluent filtering, where the resulting compost is then spread on our growing woodland onsite, on our croft.
