1 By the time my mother had finally given in and decided to hand over her credit cards, my head was pounding. The reason for my insistence was that the newest “Paramore (my favorite Rock band) top had just been launched in the best shop windows out there, and obviously I - a faithful fan, tremendously fanatic and a total Paramorenatic (as my best friend Eloise would call me) - could not live without an item such as that one, now could I? Well, I tried to tell my mom the truth, but had I done as any other obedient
17
girl would, I am almost certain that her credit cards would not be in my hands at this very moment. "So, Mariana, you finally agreed to go to this year's Graduation Dance," I could see a huge forced smile appear on her face, "I'm sure you will love this year's student event, as I'm the one responsible for the decorations and everything else". "Right," I agreed, trying not to sound too ironic at that moment, "So I hope, mom". I knew when I decided that I had to get something this valuable from my mom that lying wasn't one of my best skills, but... as a paramorenatic, nothing related to morals and ethics would affect me now. It all started in 2010, when I was only nine years old and, if I remember correctly, it was pouring rain that day, a truly scary storm. I remember this because that was the exact reason why I ended up locked inside the house, lying on the couch, feeling utterly alone, watching TV. Suddenly, I accidently ended up sticking my huge butt on top of the remote control, which obviously made the TV start to change channels uncontrollably soon after that. Darn, Mariana! You decide to do something this stupid right when SĂtio do Pica Pau Amarelo is about to start? I hate myself forever for having done this – I scream euphorically at myself (as if that would have solved anything).
18
I remember the incident making me furious, but ended up thanking myself for having been so clumsy (I’ll explain). Here’s the thing. As the channels on the cable TV were changing, I ended up making one of the greatest discoveries of my life, MTV. All of this because when I was finally able to make the TV go back to normal, the first image that popped up on the screen was Justin Bieber singing and performing the song that had made him become so popular here in Brazil: Baby. At that time, Justin Bieber wasn’t as well-known as he is today, because the next day, when I was finally able to watch the video for the third time, writing down the name of the song so that I could download it shortly after, I entered the school halls triumphantly, having been the first girl to have the song Baby in a cellphone. “Giiiiiirl, what song is that?” Eloise was the first to ask, “I need it now! Can you send it to me over Bluetooth?” “But of course. I want everyone to get to know my future boyfriend,” I couldn’t hold back my smile, “He’s so handsome, isn’t he?” and I ended up showing her one of the hundreds of other photos that I had downloaded from the internet and put into my phone. Back then, I even believed that I had actually been the one responsible for Justin being as popular here in Brazil as he is today, just because I would get up every day at 6 am, sharing the link to the best video clip in the world with all my friends, through Orkut and SMS.
19
I would invite everyone to talk about and share that beauty with their dads, moms, brothers, cousins, acquaintances and neighbors! I was completely in love with Justin, promising to marry him as soon as I turned 16. I spent two years buying all of his posters, magazines and CDs, but as soon as news got out that he was dating a singer and actress from Disney, my world literally turned upside down (it was so obvious, why hadn’t I thought of that before? I would have to study Drama and take Singing Lessons in college before I could marry him…Darn!). “Giiiiirl, did you hear the news about your future boyfriend? Or should I call him your ex-future boyfriend?” I remember Eloise holding an open Capricho magazine in her hand, right on the page where the tragic news was visible and in focus, as if it were yesterday. “Noooooooo….” I wailed, after having read the article. After hearing such bombastic news, I would always turn off the TV every time that Justin’s video would show up on screen. I still remember, though, that the worst news was having found out that my competitor was none less than Selena Gomez herself. I ended up hating one of my favorite American TV shows, “Wizards of Waverly Place”, because of that. At least he had chosen someone who was up to my standard, pardon the lack of modesty. Later on, however, I discovered that my greatest passion was
20
actually music. The ones responsible for this wonderful discovery were now my divas, Avril Lavigne and Katy Perry. “Mooom… can I dye my hair, please? I’m already thirteen,” I begged her through bellows as I tried to make her watch the best videos made my divas: “Wide Awake” and “Smile”. “You look like a crazy person crying like that, Mariana!” My mom complained, “You’re going to end up dehydrated! They don’t even know that you exist!” “But mom, everyone at school has this new look,” I tried to tell this little white lie so that she would give in to my insistent proposal, but it seemed as though my mom always kept an extra card in her sleeve. “Everyone? Then why haven’t I seen anyone with this new look at my work?” My mom was no more, no less than the principle of the school that I attended, “And what is more, a student that shows up there with this type of new look will be suspended until I give the order,” she swallowed before adding, “What are you all thinking? Haven’t you teenagers realized that these singers are wearing wigs?” “No way mom, you’re the one who should do some research, you know? Avril Lavigne would never wear a wig. Katy Perry might have done it, but Avril wouldn’t,” I finally blustered, defending one of my divas. That was when, to my delight, when the “Smile” video clip was over, my biggest inspiration appeared on screen. Yes, it was her. Stunning, and owner of a
21
wonderfully stupendous voice, Haley Williams captivated me at the same instant (of course I didn’t know her name when I discovered her. That is what the internet is for. Long live Google!). It was love at first listen. What caught my attention the most was her hair color: it was totally orange. “Look, didn’t I tell you, didn’t I tell you, mom, that everyone had this new look?” I jumped like a mad person in front of the TV pointing at the scenes where Haley appeared with orange hair in “The Only Exception”. “Aw, what a cute singer, honey, I loved that song. If you asked me to have style like hers, I could even make an exception regarding this new look you’re talking about so much, but…” “Really, mom?” I interrupted her, my eyes shining, “But why can’t I have Avril’s or Katy’s styles? Do you have something against my divas?” “Enough questions, Mariana, do you or don’t you want to have this new look?” “What do you think?” I tried not to sound ironic at that moment, especially because I still could not believe that my mother, after so many no’s, was finally going to let me dye my hair. Later on, as I sat in front of the computer, and saw the translation of the song title I realized why my mom had changed her mind so quickly. “The Only Exception” - it was the only exception she would make! OH. MY. GOD.
22
What was truly ironic was finding out the meaning of the word Paramore (which sounds exactly like Paramour): Secret lover. And that is how P-A-R-A-M-OR-E had become my (not so) secret lover. Now can you understand why I’m a Paramorenatic? If the color of my hair is orange today, instead boring old blonde, it is because of Hayley Williams. ♫♪♫♪ ''That's what you get when you let your heart win, whoa… That's what you get when you let your heart win, whoa…'' ♫♪ That was the bellowing sound of my cellphone lying on my bed, as I still tried to find something decent to wear. After all, it is not every day that a paramorenatic can fool her mom that easily in order to simply obtain the newest product from her favorite band. “Giiiiirl, finally some good news, huh?” Eloise shouted from the other end of the line when I finally picked up my phone and put it to my ear, “Why didn’t you tell me sooner? You know how much I hate being the last person to know things, don’t you?” “What are you talking about, Eloise?” “Oh, come on, you idiot! Don’t tell me you’ve already given up on going to the Graduation Dance.
23
Have you?” I could hear a change in her voice, as if she had gone from ecstatic to utterly disappointed, “Your mom just told me you were going. Ugh! Don’t make me sad again, Mariana, please. You know how much I wish you would go, don’t you?” “What? What do you mean my mom told you?” I had truly been caught by surprise. My mom should not have told Eloise that I had agreed to show up to the Graduation Dance, but as always, excitement always overcomes her and when I realize it, the entire neighborhood already knows about the news. “Come on, Mariana, she just called me to ask if I knew something, like, the reason why you had finally agreed to go to this year’s Graduation Dance. Then I told her that I didn’t know anything about that yet, and that I would certainly be calling you to ask for the reason. Then she hung up. You know how controlling your mom is, don’t you? In fact, speaking of controlling, you won’t believe the number of views that “The only exception – cover by Mariana” got over these last seven days…” “How many?” I asked, curiosity taking over me. After all, I had no idea how many people had viewed the latest video, which would not be the last, in my channel “PARAMOUR” on Youtube. “Are you ready?” She added, trying to create a brief feeling of suspense. “Wait a second…” I took a deep breath, playing along with her, “Okay, now I’m ready.”
24
“Okay, then…” However, I interrupted her before she could continue: “Wait!” I yelled, throwing the tops that I had taken from my closet before picking up Eloise’s phone call, and turning on my desktop – okay, now you can say it.” As you may have noticed, I certainly would not have believed a word that Eloise said (even though we were best friends and everything). That is why I quickly decided to personally check. I opened the link that same second and waited for the page to load, without even blinking. The speed of the internet sucked, so I kept observing each element that slowly appeared on the screen…
