VOLUME 8 | ISSUE 5 DIVISION 42 WEST | REGION 10 | CALI-NEV-HA
Welcome to the September edition of the Arctic Article! By the time you are reading this, we would already be sitting in our homes doing distance learning. It’s a pretty rough transition considering we are mostly homeschooled. I’d advise everyone (and myself) to stay extra focused to prevent slacking off! In regards to Key Club, I was super impressed reading the articles for this month and seeing the clubs...

...do their very own club service events. Shout out to Oxnard and CI for constantly grinding in both division and club events. In addition to that, thank you to everyone who submitted early and on time and to the hands that helped me put together this issue. I am very blessed to have such creative minds help get these newsletters in top shape. As always, Remember to stay safe and wear a mask. ‘Til next time D42W!

I can’t believe summer is over and we’re already back in distance learning. Even though lots of events are online now, there is still so much to look forward to this term. This month, Region 10 will be hosting STAR-TC ! Region Training Conference will be on Zoom, but the Lieutenant Governors are trying our best to make it out of this world :D

god is a woman / ariana grande starships / nicki minaj touch the sky / kanye west I want to thank all of the secretaries for their exceptional performance. Every Club MRF has been submitted either early or on-time since March! As we ease into school, I advise you all to not procrastinate, so you can still submit your tasks by the deadlines. If you are a senior, I hope you have started your college apps. Like I said above, don’t procrastinate! I hope to see you all at RTC, and you guys should listen to our playlist suggestions <3. As always,

Club MRF Due at 6 PM
Articles and Visuals Due at 6 PM
RTC and Sept. DCM 10-4 PM
Some of our clubs did an amazing job doing service through these summer months. Channel Islands held 2 service events, “Virtual Storytelling” and “Handmade Bookmarks.” Members recorded themselves reading books and created handmade bookmarks with encouraging quotes. Both events helped spread awareness and positivity to children and their families. CIHS partnered up with the non-profit organizations, Vogel Alcove and the Venice Family Clinic to make this happen!
6
Oxnard had their very own service week inspired by CNH’s “BEE Clean” theme. Members made dog toys, picked up trash in their community, sewed masks, and much more!
Our division and region have very important dates coming up, one of which is STAR-TC! Our Region Training Conference will be on September 26th (visit “Region Updates” page 26 for more details). In addition, we have many low pressure service projects going on (more on “Service Projects,” page 22).
OXNARD Oxnard has been out of this world this month! They’re one of the most active clubs with the most participants in events and service hours. They can tackle any service project, from Charity Miles to even their own service week. They’re also one of the three clubs that raised funds last month! Oxnard really shines when it comes to serving their community.
8
MARICELA ZACARIAS Maricela Zacarias was outstanding this month! She was very active in her club and also spent a lot of time in her days doing Charity miles. Maricela was devoted to helping our division raise funds by participating in Charity Miles. Due to her devotion she accumulated the most miles for the Santa Paula Charity Miles team. Let’s go Maricela! We’ll be cheering you on!!

RENEE THOMAS
CLARICE COUEY
Our amazing faculty advisor of the month is Renee Thomas! We can always count on her when it’s just attending a meeting last minute or chaperoning during the DCMs. Ms. Thomas understands the importance of Key Club for us students and would always find a way to help us a teacher. Thank you Ms. Thomas! We couldn’t have done it without you! <33
Clarice Couey was our savior for this month! She helped many Key Club seniors by bringing in a college counselor to speak at our DCM! Ms. Couey is really deserving of this title, not only for inviting a college counselor, but also for always helping her club anyway she can. Thank you Ms. Couey for always helping us and for preparing our seniors for college by bringing in the speaker!
Buena High School recently held a Zoom meeting for members, officers, and advisors. In the meeting, we discussed community service hour opportunities, such as Charity Miles, Free Rice, and other service events.
10
Along with actively participating in Free Rice, Charity Miles, and other division projects, our members recorded themselves reading children's books for the Vogel Alcove Foundation. We also created bookmarks to send off to mothers and children at UCLA's Venice Family Clinic.
11
Throughout August, we have continued to participate in Charity Miles and our club total is currently at 1,335 miles! We have also been active with other projects such as the Bookmark Making, Free Rice, and Phone Banking. Lastly, we created our very own newsletter and are serving as Link Crew Leaders. We are super excited for school to start and grow our familia!
12
Our home club has been catching up on service hours through the different activities such as Charity Miles and FreeRice. Our fundraisers for Charity Miles have been successful, as we now reached approximately 650 miles! In regards to meetings and upcoming events, our club hosted our second virtual meeting through Google Meets and welcomed new members!
13
This past month, Rio Mesa had members attend the DCM, as well as UCLA’s Circle K college webinar. Additionally, we attended the Kiwanis of Camarillo meetings. Lastly, we have continued to participate in Free Rice, Charity Miles, Donate-a-Photo, and Shave the Day.
14
Santa Paula has been actively participating in Charity Miles with a total of 401.43 miles! Santa Paula also is now looking for a permanent advisor to host club meetings weekly for the upcoming school year. We have reached out to some organizations in our community like SP Hospice to see if there is any safe way we can assist them. Santa Paula is adjusting to back-to-school while remaining safe, present, and active in our community.
15
As of August, Ventura collected about 180 miles through Charity Miles, but the majority of our attention has been devoted to planning how we will continue our club during the school year. We have plans to work with ASB to plan a virtual club week and host alternating board and general meetings on Wednesday. We are currently working on how the club will adapt our traditional events to an online setting, while planning to rely on a lot of the division events to boost involvement.
16
We are still looking to charter Santa Clara for this dear division. If you or any of your friends know students from Santa Clara that are interested in Key club, please tell them to message our LTG, Rafael Apodaca! We are excited for what’s to come!

What is your zodiac sign? I’m an Aquarius. If you had one wish, what would you wish for? I want to own my own veterinary clinic because I love all animals and want to be a vet when I’m older. How is distance learning working for you? Distance Learning is not working well for me. I don’t pay attention in class as much as I used to and I’m struggling learning from home.
What is your zodiac sign? Aries. If you had one wish, what would you wish for? It would probably be for quarantine to be over. How is distance learning working for you? For the most part, I have been doing okay with distance learning. It’s definitely more difficult as I have to hold myself accountable.
