Hi Orcas!!! Thank you for reading the FIRST newsletter made by our newly appointed DNE, Joshua Racela! Newsletters are a great source of information about our division so, I highly recommend you continue to read these (especially because Josh makes them so cute :D). This past month we conquered AP testing, congratulations to all those who completed them! Personally, I know that I completely failed AP Calc, but that is okay! We can only learn from our failures! Now that the end of the school year is approaching, finals is most likely soon, so do you best on those Orcas! I believe in you, finish your academics strong! Lastly, continue to participate in Key Club even when summer come around because you are still needed! Your LTG,

Asia Chan What’s Splashin’ Orcas? I am honored to publish our first newsletter made by me for the 2022-2023 term! I am extremely grateful to have the opportunity to serve on the division level and as your newly appointed Division News Editor. I hope to create newsletters that are captivating and showcase all your hard work in Key Club to the community. Please look forward to our monthly newsletters throughout this term and for opportunities to be featured in them! I plan to send out nomination forms for you to nominate a fellow Key Club member or fun questions relating to the theme of the newsletter for you all to answer and get the chance to get featured. In this issue, you will recap on Key Club events in April and May including the April DCM and Banquet. You will also get to see what your fellow clubs have been working on recently to serve our community. Hope you enjoy! Your DNE,

Joshua Racela 2

Hey, Orcas! Super honored to be featured in the Division Newsletter! I’m Maia, one of your Graphic Designers for the 2022-2023 term. Some facts about me: I collect plushies and various figurines, I’ve taken an interest in custom keyboards, and I’ve played violin for five years! As a part of the DLT, my job is to create graphics for the Division Instagram page and work in collaboration with other members. So far, it’s been a blast chatting and witnessing the talent and dedication everyone puts forth to make D37W proud. A substantial portion of what influenced me to join Key Club is its inclusive nature as an organization. Attending the numerous DCMs and providing for the community allowed me to connect with others who harbor the same interests – and I’ve been able to witness myself and others flourish in this community. That aspect of Key Club makes me proud to serve at a division level: combining my interests and experiencing novel things.

A new service event Mission Vista offered was to read to children at the Oceanside Barnes and Noble. Doing this was really important for connecting us and Key Club to our community and to make someone’s day by reading to them or reenacting scenes in their favorite books. This event will be continuous for the next few weeks, and we are very excited to meet up with our community on Saturday mornings.

After a bright and sunny day at school, students from El Camino High School lined up outside Ding Tea to treat themselves after a long day and to support the El Camino Key Club fundraiser on Monday, April 18th to Wednesday, April 20th. A total of $200 was able to be raised for the Pediatric Trauma Program, surpassing the monthly goal of $40. Way to go El Camino!

On Apr 16, 2022, Key Clubbers from Rancho Buena Vista High School and Mission Vista High School gathered together for an Interclub Beach Cleanup. The Beach Cleanup took place at the Oceanside Pier. First, students from both schools introduced each other, and as a group, the students began picking up plastics and trash all along the beach. Along the way students found interesting trash, one even found a walky talky! Kaityln Ma, RBV's Webmaster, shared that the cleanup was both fun and felt rewarding. Seeing these students come together to keep their beaches and environment in tip top shape is fantastic! 10

Us Orcas certainly began the term with a splash! On a bright, sunny day, D37W members gathered together for the first DCM of the term at Martin Luther King Park. In light of the phrase, “April showers bring May flowers,” we participated in water balloon-related activities to enjoy the pleasant April afternoon. Some of these activities included a water balloon toss, Sharks & Minnows, and an all-out water balloon fight! Some highlights of the meeting included Kiwanis Advisor Mrs. Brian throw a water balloon at her husband! We soaked members in water including several of the newly-announced members of the DLT including EA Amanda Shih, Spirit Coordinator Joseph Molano, and our DVE Mia Cruz! Don’t forget to check out the April DCM Recap Video that Mia made on our Instagram to remind yourself of how fun Key Club is! Nonetheless, the April DCM was definitely one for the books. We hope that you all attend our future DCMs and look forward to more fun like this.

Hi guys! My name is Maricela and I am this year’s Guajome Key Club President <3 I’ve been a member of Key Club since freshman year (I’m a junior now :) I moved from being a regular member, to being vice president for 2 years and to now the president I’m honestly surprised on how far I’ve come with Key Club, as a freshman I never pictured taking a leadership role nonetheless of a well-known club like Key Club. I’m not gonna lie at the beginning I was hesitant on whether or not to join, without my sister being part of Key Club, I would have never joined. Every time my parents would pick up my sister from Key Club events she would come home and tell us with a smiled on her face how much fun she had doing community service. Obviously my freshman brain was like, “how can picking up trash be fun?” or “She’s overhyping it,” but she was actually telling the truth. Somehow she managed to convince me to join and ever since I’ve never looked back. Key Club has been part of me several years. I’ve seen all the ups and downs that our club has been through these past years. I’ve seen the club get managed by different presidents, and have picked up on what methods work and don’t for our smaller club. A common struggle clubs at our school have is recruiting members. There’s times where I think to myself if people barely want to join fun clubs like chess, advocate club, how can we get people to join a service club? And not let them think like freshman Maricela. From what I’ve heard our school isn’t the only one that struggles with recruiting members for Key Club, but from what I’ve picked up is that no matter how far into the term you are in KEEP mentioning and promoting Key Club! Be active with your members and stand in front of your stand to attract people! A way to keep members is to form committees, it keeps general members more involved. All our members and officers have a very welcoming attitude, we all get along together very well. For service projects our club does charity miles, color a smile, teacher appreciation cards, and our annual one which is making leis for senior graduates. Our club is one of the smaller clubs in our division but we are certainly one of the most actives! :) I can’t wait to see what this term holds for our club!
