letter from your NEWS EDITOR ALOHA, ORCAS! I hope your summer has been going well despite the seasonal heat! Summer break doesn’t last forever, so enjoy it while it’s here. Do you know what summer break and I have in common? We’re both temporary! Howdy-hey Orcas, my name is Raelynn Esguerra, and I proudly serve Division 44 South. I currently serve as Division News Editor, and I’ve been a part of this lovely Ohana for a year. I’m here to fill in for Helen while she’s away, but don’t worry, she’ll be back soon! In the meantime, enjoy this issue that I’ve worked on with LTG Antony for you guys! P.S. Have I mentioned that I’m temporary? :)

Toodles!

tide-ings from your LT. GOVERNOR WHAT’S SPLASHIN’, ORCAS! My name is Antony Lin, and I proudly serve as YOUR Lieutenant Governor! As a fellow resident of this amazing coastal area we call home, I know just how easy it is to fall out of stride with Key Club during the summer, but keep in mind that Key Club never rests. We have events going on for the rest of the summer, and as we transition back into the school year, I just know that we’re going to have an amazing and successful school year. To our wonderful officers, don’t forget to keep up the good work and continue turning in your quality submissions! To our fantastic members, keep being the amazing citizens that you are, and never stop volunteering. The work that you do truly impacts your community and surrounding communities more than you might realize. Now, that’s it from me, Orcas! Let’s keep on keeping on!

Stay bubbly!

Submissions for any given month are due at 6:00 PM PST on the 5th of the following month. For the early bird deadline, officers must submit by the 3rd of the month. Turning in submissions on time earns Pod Points, and turning in submissions by the early bird deadline earns even more Pod Points. The club with the most Pod Points at the end of the year will be recognized as Club of the Year and win a special prize for the entire club. Every officer should be turning in a submission every month, and in August and November, officers will also be asked to fill out a reflection. Late submissions are unacceptable! Submissions are a reflection of your club’s activities, and failure to submit could result in major consequences.

Recognition Articles are 50+ word articles about one member, officer, club, faculty adviser, and Kiwanis adviser (one per person/club) explaining why they deserve to be recognized in front of the entire division. Recognition Articles are one of the greatest components of deciding which members, officers, clubs, and advisers are honored every month with a framed certificate and a mention in the division newsletter. If your recognition is selected, your article will be used in the division newsletter, so make sure that your article makes sense and describes your honoree well. The division newsletter will be sent to the California-Nevada-Hawai’i District and advertised to the entire region.

The Monthly Report Form (MRF) is a direct, quantitative summary of exactly what your club has done in the last month. This is different from the club recap in that it is much more detailed, less aesthetically pleasing, and will not be seen by general members. The MRF helps your LTG decide what steps to take in order to work with you to aid your club. Please be completely frank with your responses in the MRF; this MRF will also determine which members receive bronze, silver, gold, or platinum status for exemplary service at District Convention in 2020. Each MRF will be compiled into the Division MRF (completed by the Division Secretary, Kevin Do) and sent in to the California-Nevada-Hawai’i District for review.

SSIONS ★

An article is a 100+ word paragraph summarizing an event that your club participated in within the last month. A visual is a photograph (candid preferred) and a caption describing said photograph from an event that your club participated in within the last month. Your club should be submitting at least one article and visual each month. Members may write articles or create visuals, but the Editor must be the one to submit them to the LTG, Division Photographer, and DNE. Articles and visuals will be directly used in the division newsletter, and articles and visuals on their own will be submitted (with your name on them) to the district, where they may be featured in the district newsletter.

come to events! By being a more informed member, you are able to more actively participate in your Key Club community and enjoy your experience much more! Here’s why you should attend different events: ● Club: a great way to fundraise and serve at the most foundational level ● Division: find out what other clubs are doing and hang out with them ● District: meet Key Clubbers from three different states and make unforgettable memories ● International: see members from across the globe and see for yourself who Mr. International really is Don’t wait for your officers to tell you what’s up; come find out for yourself!

apply for contests & teams! Get involved in the inner workings of your division and district! Here are some amazing opportunities: ● Creative Media Team (District) ● Leadership Team (District) ● Spirit Team (Division) ● Sergeant-at-Arms Team (Division/District) A helping hand is always useful, and helping our Kiwanis is definitely worth it! If you would like more information about division or club events, how you can help out, or how to participate in district business, please email your LTG at d37w.cnhkc.ltg@gmail.com or speak to your President!

9 | GETTING INVOLVED WITH D37W

If you would like more information on when your sponsoring Kiwanis club meets, when Kiwanis DCMs are, or how to contact your Kiwanis adviser/president, please email your LTG at d37w.cnhkc.ltg@gmail.com!

attend meetings! Know what your sponsoring Kiwanis Club does aside from being involved with your Key Club! It’s always good to stay in the know, and there’s no better way to do so than see what’s happening at the source. Here’s how you can benefit by checking out Kiwanis meetings and DCMs: ● Be updated at least monthly on what events your Kiwanis Club is hosting ● Network with Kiwanis members; this could come in handy in the future ● Enjoy some free food :) Be in the know, and attend some meetings this year!

ask how we can help! As a group of Key Clubs, we do a ton of volunteering, but we should always remember to help out those who help us: our local Kiwanis Clubs. Local Kiwanis Clubs host multiple events throughout the year, so it’s never hard to help out! Here are some events hosted by local Kiwanis Clubs: ● The Grape Gatsby Affaire (Sunrise Vista) ● Pancake Breakfasts (Carlsbad/Oceanside) ● Day at the Races (Del Mar) ● Beach Fun Day (Oceanside Pacific) ● Bunco 4 Bucks (Blue Wave) A helping hand is always useful, and helping our Kiwanis is definitely worth it! DOG TOYS FOR GOOD BOYS

On Sunday, June 23rd, Division 21 Hippos and Division 37 West Orcas ran out to Fletcher Cove Beach Park in Solana Beach for a day of sun and fun. After a hearty and enjoyable round of icebreakers, Hippos and Orcas mingled while creating dog toys, and Tri-City Christian member Anika Hume went above and beyond with 9 dog toys. Additionally, members were served plentiful amounts of watermelon, popsicles, and water. All dog toys were eventually donated. Overall, this was a highly successful social Division Council Meeting, and members seemed to really enjoy the free food provided alongside a service project. OUR KILLER SERVICE | 12

ponto beach cleanup

SAGE CREEK

On Saturday, June 29th, Sage Creek Key Clubbers traveled to Ponto Beach in Carlsbad to clean up trash. Originally, this was supposed to be an interclub event with the Carlsbad Key Club, but unfortunately, no one from that club was able to make it to the event, but Sage Creek Key Clubbers did not let that get in the way of accomplishing some good, old-fashioned service. Interestingly, plastic bags filled with rocks were found buried underneath the sand, and Key Clubbers managed to clean up all of them. While this event could have been larger, it was still highly successful and resulted in a cleaner San Diego.

officer training

D37W x D37E

13 | OUR KILLER SERVICE

On Saturday, June 15th, officers and members alike from Division 37 West and Division 37 East gathered at Del Lago Academy in Escondido to learn about what it takes to be a committed officer and participant in Key Club. From creative presentations on SMART goals to officer-specific duties to public speaking, workshop presenters covered a great variety of topics that were highly beneficial for officers to hear. Additionally, there was a scavenger hunt and raffle for a s’mores gift basket, and there were pizza and many other snacks and desserts for members to enjoy, in addition to some good old country music.
