The Denver Golf Expo has something for everyone, including pro seminars for golfers of all abilities; golf resort destinations; truckloads of golf merchandise including show deals; and a bunch of discount offers for the upcoming golf season. Highlights of this year’s show include: •
The greatest features of the Expo, according to Cramer, are the amazing deals. “Everyone is looking for a way of extending their golf dollar. The moment you enter the doors of Denver Golf Expo, you’ve extended your golf dollars. Discount golf begins with your $12 admission, which immediately gives you a free “Fore Golf Program,” courtesy of South Suburban Golf Park and Recreation.” The Fore Golf Program is a new progressive golf experience, offered for the first time to Denver Golf Expo attendees. The offer features a different golf experience each month from February to May. Begin in February with a free round of gold at one of three South Suburban courses and then move into May with a choice of several golf deals, such as 2 for 1 green fees at Lone Tree Golf Course or a free round at Family Sports Golf Club.
Snow might keep golfers away from the courses, but beginning and seasoned golfers alike mark their calendars to attend this not-to-be-missed February annual event. Golf retailers, golf-related companies, golf courses, golf resorts and hotels, Colorado PGA members, Colorado Golf Association members, golf tournament directors, and 12,000 of your golfing buddies gather at the Denver Golf Expo to enjoy the industry’s best offerings – all under one roof!

enny’s Golf returns to the Denver Golf Expo as host to the Demo Days Club Test, a popular gathering place every year. The 2012 Expo, with Lenny’s Golf’s Club Test sponsorship was the best Demo Days yet, according to Mark Cramer, president of Denver Golf Expo. “Everyone knows Lenny Nosewicz of Lenny’s Golf,” says Cramer. “And everyone knows that when Lenny gets behind an event, he puts 150 percent of his effort into making it a success. That’s what he did for the last 3 years at Denver Golf Expo, and we’re thrilled to have him back again in 2013 to celebrate our 20 year anniversary.” Since the early 1980’s, Lenny’s Golf has been a Colorado favorite offering the best in golf equipment, apparel and custom fitting. Lenny’s Golf participated in the Expo last year, but Lenny says, “We’re really excited to return as sponsor of the 2013 Denver Golf Expo’s Demo Days Club Test.
Our 15 hitting stations will loosen up your golf swing while you test ‘drive’ the new 2013 club models.” A recurring enhancement to the Demo Days Club Test experience is Lenny’s Golf state-of-the-art-fitting equipment. “It’s an amazing tool for golfers,” says Lenny. “Today it’s a lot more than simply figuring out how to hit. Technology makes your golf game easier and more enjoyable. We can pop dif-
ferent shafts on your club and net you another 8-10 yards.” With assistance from manufacturers’ representatives, Expo attendees can stop by and swing 2013 offerings from top club makers such as Ping, Callaway, Nike, Cleveland, Taylor Made, Mizuno, and Adams with many more brands being added every day! This continues to be the biggest three demo days that Rocky Mountain golfers will have for the entire
season. According to Lenny, “The driving range offers golfers the opportunity to see and try a lot of new product. If there’s a club you’re interested in, chances are we’ll have it.” If you’re looking for golf deals, then Lenny’s Golf at the Denver Golf Expo is the place to shop. Lenny is again bringing a ton of inventory, several hundred thousand dollars worth! Stopping at the Denver Golf Expo gets your great deals and special buys on clubs (new and used), bags, pull carts – and more! “We have all kinds of deals on equipment and gear that you can’t get anywhere else,” says Lenny. “We’ll make sure you leave the Expo with the right equipment and the best deals.” Armed with personal knowledge gained at the Denver Golf Expo’s Demo Days Club Test, golfers are invited after the show to check out Lenny’s Golf Shop‘s full line of clubs and equipment, personalized service and custom fitting, located at 2601 S Parker Rd - Aurora, CO or call 303-369-5900. Tee It Forward! By Diana Rowe DIVOT Contributing Writer
Do you wish your approach shot to the green was just a bit easier? Would you rather hit an iron into the green vs. a fairway wood or hybrid? If you want to play faster and have more fun, move up a set of tees and TEE IT FORWARD! More than 70 Colorado golf courses offered the Tee it Forward program in 2012. These courses realized the benefit to setting up their course to better suit the abilities of the amateur golfer. Facilities recognized the benefits of increased play, lower scores, faster rounds, and most importantly, MORE FUN! Many amateurs are regularly hitting approach shots on a par-4 hole from 185 to 205 yards. The fact is most bogey golfers only hit approach shots generally with any accuracy from within 170 yards. When you TEE IT

Golf Rules Quick Reference App with the new 2012–2015 Rules
“Golf Rules Quick Reference” is one of the world’s most popular golf apps. It now includes video sequences and the golf rules for 2012–2015.
T
he “Golf Rules Quick Reference” app was launched three years ago and since then it has topped the rankings of the most popular golf apps in numerous countries. It is even officially recommended by Apple.
The developers, led by referee and best-selling author Yves C. Ton-That (his “Golf Rules Quick Reference” pocket book sold more than 1 million copies), have now improved the app significantly once again. Updated to include the new golf rules, the app provides the answer
to virtually every question about the rules straight away. Razor-sharp, interactive image sequences are used to explain the correct procedure step-by-step. As a new feature, elaborately animated video sequences have been added in order to make the rules even easier to understand. One extremely practical component is the interactive “Relief Finder” help tool that tells you instantly whether you are entitled to a free drop. The app is so simple to operate that even technically inexperienced users can benefit from all the advantages straight away. You can find the answers to your questions with a maximum of just 3 clicks. Furthermore, a brief summary provides an overview of all the rule changes that came into effect on 01.01.2012. To sum it up, the app is a real must for golfers with a smartphone. Can be purchased now for the iPhone from the iTunes App Store for $9.99. It will also soon be available for Android and Windows phones. For more information visit www.iGolfrules.com D

Curing Your Golf
Malaise By Peter Hellman Divot Contributing Writer
P
laying golf on the same course time after time has its advantages. One advantage is that one's knowledge of the course gets better and skills needed to void hazards, O.B. and distractions (twenty-something cart girls come to mind) all get well honed. Another advantage is that along with all the lower posted scores your handicap drops.
But, along with these advantages there are some negatives. Boredom comes to mind. You may play a terrific course, but I'll bet an interesting ball marker that after awhile the same tee-togreen begins to lose its challenge and one putts on the same greens just don't have the same punch as they used to have. And, instead of becoming the master of your course, ennui sets in and the skill, fun and excitement of playing your home course diminishes.

The next thing you know, hazards and O.B. creep back into your game, cart girls become distractive and scores and handicaps begin to rise again. This all sounds pretty grim, but there is a cure. The cure does not require a visit to a psychiatrist, a proctologist or any other type of MD. It's simpler than that. What you need is a "golf getaway". What I am talking about is a trip that involves, packed bags, an airline ticket and a few days to put your head back into the mindset it once had. Whether it’s a short escape to Arizona this winter or a long considered trip to Scotland, England, or Ireland next summer, a golf trip is the perfect antidote for what ails you. Who knows, your game may improve just thinking about it. One should not underrate the positives of "thinking about a golf trip". A great deal of satisfaction can come from the process of planning a trip. Thinking about where to go, courses to play and adventures one might have during the trip are sure to cause the heart to beat just a little faster. Being in the business of golf trip planning, I have experienced first hand the excitement golfers exhibit when talking about an interesting golf destination. In fact, I have noticed that the more a person is involved with the planning, the more excited they become. This is particularly true of trips to far away places, destinations new to the golfer and places just a bit exotic or at least different from the comfortable predictability of the good old U.S. of A. Once the itinerary is set, reservations for tee times and accommodations made and transportation selected, the meaty sense of anticipation sets in. It is difficult not to bubble a bit as one thinks about stepping on the first tee of St. Andrews Old Course or sharing a Guinness with a local Irish golfer in the club bar of the Ballybunion Golf Club. The only thing that beats planning a trip and the anticipation of the departure is actually taking the trip and later recall-
ing it in conversation with friends or in a private moment of contemplation. I have been traveling to play golf for over 20 years and I think I have a book's worth of memory stories of places, golf experiences, interesting characters, beautiful views, great food and drink. Take a memory of a great shot for instance. Years ago on the Costa del Sol in Spain, I played an impossible flop shot from a rocky waste area wide of the green that was cramped with thorns and cacti to within a foot of the pin. It seemed so easy and that may be why it stuck so indelibly in my mind all this time. Another image that continues to share a special place within my brain involves my first trip to Scotland and my first round on the Old Course at St. Andrews. It was a day in April and conditions were perfect. The sun warmed us from the chill in the air and there was not even a puff of wind coming off the North Sea. As I played one of the Old Course's crossing holes (the fairway of one hole cuts across the fairway of another), I noticed two older local golfers dressed in tweedy wool sport coats, wearing school ties and accompanied by a dog. They were approaching the green and for just a moment it looked like they had wood shafted clubs in their hands. It had to be a scene from 100 hundred years ago and seemed to epitomize my romantic notions of Scotland. So, if you are feeling just a bit of ennui about golf and your game, take my advice and start the planning process for your rehabilitative golf getaway. It may not be a spiritual experience, but it will do wonders for your game, give you lots to talk about with friends and memories to quietly share with yourself. Story by Classic GOLF Tours. A Tip of the Cap Tom Olkowski, Ph.D. Divot Contributing Writer
Arnold Palmer

ere’s a little quiz even the most casual golf historian should be able to answer. In their primes, what were Sam Snead’s, Ben Hogan’s and Arnold Palmer’s favorite head gear and what did it advertise? The answers: Sam’s fashionable fedora, Ben’s driving cap, Arnie’s natural head of hair; and, amazingly, they advertised absolutely nothing. Now six decades later, look what’s happened on golfers’ heads. Today almost every pro on tour wears some form of head wear with the possible exception of John Daly who has trouble picking out a decent pair of pants. Tour players primarily wear caps for protection from the sun, but also as personal fashion statements and a place to cram as much advertising as possible. You’ll rarely see Snead’s hat or Hogan’s cap on tour these days. Chi Chi Rodriguez and Payne Stewart sported the last of those many years ago. Baseball style caps seem to dominate the circuit today but there are notable exceptions. The visor crowd includes the likes of Ian Poulter, Luke Donald, Vijay, Bubba and Phil. Visors are attractive and cooler alternatives to caps but financially they do limit advertising space. Of course that may not matter when you’re already making millions in prize money. Rory Sabbatini’s cowboy hat is his protective response to skin cancer while Matt Kuchar, Bill Haas and Jim Furyck require protection simply because all three of them combined can’t match Charley Hoffman’s prodigious crop of hair. Greg Norman’s straw hat remains one of the most stylish personal statements of its time and it advertised only one product – Greg himself. Similarly, Tiger sports a cap bearing his own distinctive logo, also pretty classy. On the opposite end of the spectrum Ricky Fowler’s unmistakable over-sized, flat-brimmed caps violate every fashion law on the planet. Ricky Barnes’ military style cap isn’t too far behind but both trail Jesper Parnevik’s snap brim style and Jim Colbert’s old buckets hats in the goofy fashion category. No matter the style though, for professional golfers, head wear is designed as a walking billboard. But what about the rest of us? We probably all own a multitude of caps but, beyond the need for solar protection, how a weekend player without a corporate sponsor selects his head wear for a round of golf is a mystery akin to how my wife chooses an outfit to go clothes shopping. Many golfers wear caps emblazoned with

the brand of balls they play or the clubs they swing. This smacks of reverse sponsorship. Not only do you pay to buy the balls but you pay to advertise them as well. I admit I sometimes wear a brand name visor but my excuse is I don’t play that particular club and I got the visor for free. Then there are those of us who strive to emulate our heroes. When he played, my father often wore black because of his fondness for Gary Player. A middle-aged golfer adorned in a Ricky Fowler cap and John Daly trousers, however, should be an immediate target for the fashion police. Demonstrating allegiance to our favorite sports team is another common fashion, and I’ll admit to owning caps from the Brooklyn Cyclones, Louisville Bats and the West Oahu Canefires. They may appear a little out of place in Colorado but they’re certainly more effective conversation starters than the average Broncos cap. Another popular cap is the one that boasts of courses we’ve played or tournaments we’ve attended. Not only are these an acceptable fashion statement, they often carry fond memories of our travels and sometimes gain us a bit of prestige among our peers, unless they all show up wearing caps identical to ours. I have two in this category: one from the 2009 U.S. Open that my buddy Ron gave me and the other from The Sanctuary in Sedalia (which I actually bought for myself). Then, of course, everyone has their one favorite cap. It might be from your lowest round ever, the best course you’ve ever played or the one the kids gave you for Mother’s Day. Mine is a tattered, sweatstained relic from the Conch Republic Grill in North Redington Beach, Florida, a rollicking post- round hangout that offers cold beer, great seafood and Jimmy Buffett on the sound system. I only wish that cap could help me play a little bit more like Sam, Ben or Arnie. Tom Olkowski, Ph.D., is a retired clinical psychologist in Denver who, like most of us, has more golf caps in his closet than he will ever need. D

AimPoint Green Reading... Never Guess at Where to Aim Again! By Scotty Hofer Divot Contributing Writer
W
hat is AimPoint? AimPoint is a putt predictive technology that was developed by Mark Sweeney and is the “blue line” overlayed on the greens on the Thursday and Friday broadcasts of the PGA Tour events on The Golf Channel. Mark and his team go to PGA Tour stops and computer map the greens with a laser machine. The accumulated green data is used in a computer software program which accurately predicts the path the putt should take in order to go in. This same technology has been put into an Instructional program that teaches you the science of how to read greens in a fun yet informative clinic. You will go from thinking that a putt breaks this way or that, to
knowing exactly how much break to play for any putt. And the cool thing is that it works anywhere! There are two levels of training – Fundamentals and Advanced Concepts. The fundamental clinics teach you everything you need to know about the AimCharts, the system and reading every putt within 20’ of the cup. The Advanced clinics go one step further and teach you how to handle all those “tricky” putts over knolls, shoulders, swales, crowns, saddles and everything outside of 20’. You also learn how to utilize the concepts to enhance your short game and approach shots as well as green charting and tournament preparation. The clinics are approximately 2 - 2 ½ hours long and class sizes are kept to a maximum of 8 – 10 students to ensure an intimate learning experience for all involved.
AS SEEN ON THE GOLF CHANNEL!
The AimPoint® Green Reading Method currently used by top 100 instructors, PGA and LPGA Tour pros and caddies is the most effective way to read greens ever developed and teaches exactly why and how a putt breaks. Never guess at the direction or amount of break again.
FUNDAMENTAL Course - $200 per person, 2 hours, 10 student maximum. Spring clinics April 27, May 4, May 11.
You will learn:
• Single-Plane Reads • Causes of Break • Inflection Points • Defining Slope • Position
• Basic AimChart Usage • Primary Green Shapes • Putt Geometry • Measuring Green Speed • Capture Speed Dynamics
ADVANCED courses for $300 per person are also available.

Who Teaches AimPoint? Stan Sayers and Scotty Hofer from MetaGolf Learning Center are the Certified AimPoint Instructors for the Rocky Mountain Region and have taught classes both here and in other parts of the United States. Stan and Scotty were personally trained and certified by Mark Sweeney, the founder of AimPoint Technologies, and Stan is also certified as a Senior AimPoint Instructor. Stan and Scotty were absolutely amazed at just how effective the system really is. Specializing in the areas of putting and green reading, Stan and Scotty have taught players of all levels. Why you need AimPoint? A recent study conducted in Norway by Jon Karlson at the Norwegian School of Sports Science concluded that over 60% of missed putts are due to faulty reads! That number gets even higher if you are an elite amateur or professional player because, by that point, your equipment and stroke mechanics are generally quite sound. The AimPoint Green Reading System will not only teach you how to handle the greens but will also show you how to implement the concepts into your short game! AimPoint clients include many of the top players and caddies on the Professional Tours including Stacy Lewis (2012 LPGA
Player of the Year), Nick Faldo, Padraig Harrington, Scott McCarron, Steven Ames, and Suzann Pettersen, just to name a few. Stacy Lewis' LPGA putts per greens in regulation (GIR) improved dramatically after learning AimPoint from 88th in 2009 to 3rd in 2012! Many college and university golf teams are also using AimPoint. Where? Spring clinics scheduled to be held at Broken Tee Englewood Golf Course will be conducted on April 27, May 4, and May 11 from 9 – 11 am. Advanced clinics and some Fundamental clinics will be held at Colorado Golf Club with dates and times to be determined. Additional dates for groups of 4 or more are available. Clinic Costs: The cost is $200.00 for the Fundamentals Clinics (at Broken Tee Englewood Golf Course and Colorado Golf Club) and $300 for the Advanced Clinics (at Colorado Golf Club) and includes AimCharts and Class Notes. More Information: If you would like further information, you can contact Scotty Hofer directly at 303-995-3329 or email at shofer@metagolflc.com. Junior Tour Recognizes Colorado Talent
K
nowing that there was so much potential in Colorado for the talented junior golfers who reside here was the reason the staff at The Rocky Mountain Junior Golf Tour decided to establish their roots here. “We decided to create our own niche to fill the void. There were great opportunities available when we originally had the idea to start the tour but at that time there was so much of the year in Colorado when the weather permitted tournaments and there were none scheduled” states the tournament staff. RMJGT is entering its 5th season with an aggressive Colorado schedule each year as well as tournaments in NM, AZ, ID and KS. This tour with its Nationally ranked events throughout the Western Region is a hit with junior golf players who are between 10 and 19 years of age and have a good understanding of the rules of golf as well as those who are veterans in junior golf and are ready to take their skills to the collegiate level as well as the families that support them. Rocky Mountain Junior Golf Tour events are ranked by Junior Golf Scoreboard, the unofficial sanction-
ing body of junior golf in the US as well as having some of the Colorado events qualify for Golfweek and AJGA rankings and exemptions. The tournaments are predominantly two day events and the average tournament fee is $140. The tournament director, Tracy Cologne has watched these players grow as players and as people. “Many of the players that compete in the tour are realizing their personal goals with golf. We have learned a lot along the way and have established relationships with courses, instructors and college coaches”. One of the distinguishing aspects of the Rocky Mountain Junior Golf Tour is that the staff has taken on the entire region knowing that golfers are looking for year round opportunities to harness their skills and experience courses in states other than the one they reside in. RMJGT has also partnered with College Golf Scholarship Advisors to assist players in navigating through the sometimes overwhelming prospect of securing a college golf scholarship. I
f you believe that you can’t improve your putting during the winter months here in Colorado because of the amount of snow that remains on the greens, think again. Granted, distance control and green reading (speed and line) are the two most crucial elements involved in putting. However, so are set up and mechanics. The market is flooded with training aids for all aspects of golf and putting is no exception. There is undoubtedly more help
for golfers with regards to swing aids and practice assistance than any other sport. It’s a multi-billion dollar industry. Make just one trip to the PGA Merchandise Show, held near the end of January in Orlando, and you’ll witness it first-hand.
In an effort to attempt to keep the putter head square to the intended line, many students take the putter outside causing the face to be closed at impact, somewhat like going “over the top” on a full swing. Remember, the putting stroke is a microcosm of the full swing. When you take the club back, one arm gets longer and one gets shorter. The putter must arc inside to inside. Don’t force the issue by crossing the line and taking the putter
head away from the training aid. Let the putter arc naturally. A variety of putting arcs are available, but I prefer one that is rubber-backed so that it won’t slide on your carpet as you practice indoors during the “non-golfing season.” Invest in your putting by utilizing these two practice aids and you’ll see instantaneous results. When it comes to training aids for putting, there is nothing simpler, which gives more immediate solid feedback for me than a putting mirror. The mirror lays directly on the ground under your shoulders and eyes. It’s critical that you begin in the proper position and the mirror image is honest. Placing your eyes over the top of the ball will expose pos-

Bernhard Langer has been using a long putter for 15 years and was perplexed with the USGA’s new rule to ban players from anchoring the club to the body.
G
olf Datatech, LLC, one of the golf industry’s leading independent research firms for consumer, trade and retail golf trends, has released a first-of-its-kind study developed to evaluate the reaction of “serious golfers” to the U.S. Golf Association’s proposed new ruling that would prohibit anchoring the putter to the body while making a stroke. The study, which is being announced prior to the start of the 2013 PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando, reports that a majority of golfers surveyed feel that their game will not be impacted by the rule, while the small percentage who use a long putter will continue to play regardless of the ruling. The results of the study are based on responses from 1,766 randomly selected golfers drawn from Golf Datatech’s exclusive Serious Golfer Database, who play an average of 68 rounds per year with an average handicap of 14.3. “This is such an explosive topic in golf that we felt the industry needed a benchmark for evaluating the opinion of the game’s most avid players,” said John Krzynowek, Partner, Golf Datatech. “On a practical level, the proposed ruling on anchoring putters has minimal impact on most amateur golfers, as only 5% use a long putter, and the majority of serious golfers don’t believe long putters aid in the putting process. Overall, however, the
debate over long putters has far more to do with a few elite professional players and less to do with the game as played by the average golfer.” Key findings in the Golf Datatech study on the Anchor Ruling for Putters include the following: • Among the respondents who had an opinion about whether or not anchoring the putter makes it easier to putt, 45% feel that anchoring the putter makes it easier to putt, while 55% believe anchoring the putter does not make it easier. • 60% of respondents believe that the governing bodies of golf should ban the anchoring of clubs to the body, while 40% believe they should not. • 62% of respondents do not believe the anchoring ban will cause some amateur golfers to enjoy the game less. • If the proposed rule is enforced in 2016, 31% of current long putter users will continue to anchor their putter, while 31% will not anchor against their body, and 38% will switch to a conventional putter.
