Golf Datatech Releases 2021 Mid-Year Report On U.S. Golf Retail Performance & Rounds Played Exclusive Insights Indicate Retail Sales of Golf Equipment and Apparel are Strong, while Rounds Played May be Close to Peaking Golf Datatech Releases 2021 Mid-Year Report On U.S. Golf Retail Performance & Rounds Played Exclusive Insights Indicate Retail Sales of Golf Equipment and Apparel are Strong, while Rounds Played May be Close to Peaking Kissimmee, Fla., July 27, 2021 – Golf Datatech, LLC, the golf industry’s leading independent market research firm for retail sales, consumer and trade trends, today unveiled the 2021 Mid-Year U.S. Golf Retail Performance & Rounds Played Report, analyzing retail sales of golf equipment, golf apparel, and rounds played over the first six-months of 2021. Due to the impacts of the pandemic on normal economic activity, making comparisons to 2020 doesn’t tell the whole story,

6

so Golf Datatech’s analysis also compares the performance of the first six-months of 2021 with the same period in 2019, which was the last “normal” year prior to the worldwide impacts of COVID-19. Highlighting the report, Golf Datatech analysis indicates rounds played thru June 2021 were up nearly 23% vs. 2020 and high single digits vs. 2019. During the same timeframe, golf equipment sales (balls, clubs, shoes, bags, gloves, distance devices) were up 78% compared to 2020 and 41% vs. 2019, while golf apparel is rebounding after a challenging 2020, up 68% vs. 2020 and 10% vs. 2019, reversing the negative trend it followed during the depths COVID-19. “The question everyone was asking

DIVOTMagazine.com l Summer / Fall Issue 2021

coming into 2021 was whether golf could continue to sustain its upward trajectory as the U.S. economy heated up and golfers had access to alternative activities,” said John Krzynowek, Partner at Golf Datatech. “However, through the first six-months of 2021 the results are very encouraging, as all segments of the golf economy continue to prosper, even in the face of supply issues, particularly for products made abroad. While manufacturers of golf balls, clubs, shoes, bags, have all struggled to meet demand and replenish drained product pipelines, much of the industry still remains in a hand-to-mouth struggle to ship product in a timely manner.” Krzynowek adds, “Golf equipment sales had never reached $400 million in any single month prior to April of 2021, when retail sell-through totaled over $425 million, and now in June we’ve had the third consecutive month with sales above $400 million, so significant momentum continues in the equipment sector.” In regard to apparel, COVID-19 was

particularly hard on golf clothing manufacturers in 2020, as many Green Grass golf shops closed for extended periods of time, and once opened to the public they urged golfers not to linger, while dressing rooms were frequently closed, return policies were tightened (or not allowed at all), and people were encouraged not to touch/feel the merchandise. Additionally, many large resorts lost significant traffic from European and Asian visitors, and these customers would typically spend significantly on apparel. As a result, coming off that difficult period, the bounce back in golf apparel sales through the first six months of the year has been particularly welcome news to battered apparel brands. After being mired in a negative position, the golf apparel category finally turned the corner during the first half of 2021, and the $552 million first half is the largest since Golf Datatech started tracking golf apparel sales, beating the previous high of $536 million from 2015.

News Adds Krzynowek, “Combining equipment and apparel sales thru the on and offcourse channels, total consumer demand in dollars for golf products were 66% higher than last year for the first six-months of 2021 and compared to 2019 sales are up 23%. At some point consumer demand for new products will have to slow down, however thus far it has held up very well to the pressures of the pandemic.”

levels it would be a big win for the industry,” said Krzynowek. For more information on Golf Datatech, call 888-944-4116 or visit www.golfdatatech.com.

About Golf Datatech, LLC

2021 Mid-Year Rounds Played Analysis

In 1998, Golf Datatech undertook the task of creating the golf industry’s first monthly projections of rounds played by state and region around the country. The Company’s objective from day one was to provide accurate estimates of the health of golf by tracking rounds, which are the engine that drives almost every other aspect of the business. The company also receives support from the NGF (delivering course data) and WeatherTrends (weather data) in an effort to provide the industry with granular detail at the market level. According to data compiled directly from golf course owners and operators, rounds of golf played through the first sixmonths of 2021, at public, private and resort courses nationwide, were up 23%, and compared to 2019 they remain up in the high single digits. However, June 2021

“It will prove difficult for rounds to stay on pace with last year over the last six months of the year, but if we can stay within a few percentage points of the 2020 levels it would be a big win for the industry,”

data showed a very small improvement (+0.4%) in rounds vs. the same month last year, suggesting the tsunami in rounds might finally be slowing, and comparisons to 2020 will become increasingly hard to beat. Tee time capacity at golf courses has not increased significantly, if at all, from a year ago, and 2020 was a summer of ex-

cellent weather with minimal precipitation and relatively mild temperatures across much of the nation, making for difficult comps. “It will prove difficult for rounds to stay on pace with last year over the last six months of the year, but if we can stay within a few percentage points of the 2020

Golf Datatech, LLC (www.golfdatatech.com) was established in 1995, and since that time it has become the industry’s gold standard for accurate and timely information on retail sales, inventory, pricing, and distribution of golf products through the on and off course channels. In 1998, the Company extended its reach into consumer research, strategic sales, and marketing consulting. In 2006, the Company expanded its retail and consumer research programs into the United Kingdom and in 2008 added markets in Europe. Golf Datatech now produces the first-ever digitally driven golf retail sales reports for the US, UK, Sweden, France and Germany. All golf courses are welcome to contribute to the monthly rounds played research and receive the reports by going to www.golfdatatech.com/course-search. Simply enter your course name to locate your facility then enter your previous month’s rounds along with your email address to ensure that you receive the latest results by email as soon as they are available. Playing golf with power has always been a benefit to the Pros and a never-ending quest for the average “Joes.” With Bryson DeChambeau pushing the limits on the PGA Tour and Kyle Berkshire hitting 302 yards 8 irons on Instagram, weekend warriors are mystified by how these golfers can create so much more power while they continue to hit the same distances or shorter year after year. One of the biggest differences that GOLFTEC’s SwingTRU motion study found after looking at hundreds of thousands of swings was how much more PGA Tour players turn their hips at impact than lower skill level players. This movement directly correlates to skill and more importantlypower. Let’s dive into what hip turn is, and how you can get the most of your swing to hit the ball farther. Hip turn as measured by GOLFTEC is simply the rotation of the lower body towards or away from the target. GOLFTEC Coaches measure this movement in degrees either open or closed relative to a neutral body position. What SwingTRU suggests is that the more you move your hips open at impact, the higher-skilled golfer you have the potential to be. The above picture shows a comparison between an average 30 handicap golfer and an average professional golfer. You’ve probably heard about this topic during nearly every PGA Tour event when commentators describe the professional golfers making huge turns and hitting the ball massive distances. Now that you know a little more about hip

Professional Golfer

turn and how it relates to skill, you can begin to identify if you need to improve your hip turn through impact. You might want to look more like the golfer in the green shirt if your contact is good but you struggle to hit the ball far enough or your distance is good and you struggle with control- often pushing or overdrawing your shots. If either of these golfers sounds like you or someone you know, we’re addressing how you can start to turn more at impact and watch your shots fly higher, straighter and farther. Before you start to turn faster it’s important to know that is more difficult for your body to rotate when it flexing or bending towards the ground. Think of a figure skater making a spin in the Olympics. As the skater gets “taller” they begin to spin faster, when they move closer to the ice their spins slow down. If you are trying to turn more at impact, you need to straighten your legs, hips, and shoulders to make it easier for your body to turn faster. Doing this often comes with ignoring the old adage “keep your head down”. The longer your eyes are looking at the ground, the slower you will turn. If you want to swing like the long hitters on the Tour, then start your next practice session with a few practice swings. In your follow-through measure if you’re finishing with your knees straight and your belly button facing the sky. If you can do these movements you will be turning your hips more like the golfers you see on TV. Pick A Perfect Putter By Jerry Walters DIVOT Contributing Writer Recently, a friend asked me what I thought some of the significant technological changes in golf had been over the years. I pondered the query for a moment because club changes are certainly worthy of consideration due to the length of tee shots currently. Because of length, some golf courses have become obsolete, having to lengthen holes when possible. The golf ball debate will go on and on between pundits of the game. Some demand that it be scaled back and others insist that it’s acceptable right where it is today.

Being a putter guy and a putting instructor, my immediate thought went to the surface which is the smoothest on a golf course; the putting green. Watching old footage of golf in black and white, golfers generally struck putts with a forceful blow as the greens were slower and demanded more velocity. Seeing that, I began to ruminate over why and how the surfaces we putt on became so speedy. The grass we now putt on is groomed differently than turf in the past. Modern machinery enables superintendents to cut and maintain these new strains of plants at a lower level without killing or stressing them out, thus making the greens faster than ever before.

Just recently, during the telecast of a tour event, the commentators mentioned that the green speed (see also Edward Stimpson, stimpmeter) was over 13! That’s incredible! That’s comparable to putting on the street and hoping to stop the ball at the crosswalk. Speedy greens require getting the ball on

16

the surface quicker to avoid skidding and twisting off line. A ball on the ground tracks a much truer line to the target than one that hops and jumps after being struck. A golf ball above the grass tips has no resistance, so when impact is made with the putter, if not squarely on line, the ball will continue off line until contact with the grass is made. At that point, it’s too late to correct. The ball will continue to travel off line and results in another putt missed.

In the past I worked for a putter company on the PGA Tour. They incorporated a patented characteristic that caused the ball to roll sooner than other putters. I have recently seen the future of putter faces and believe to have found the optimum technology for all golfers. SIK putters feature descending loft technology. What does that mean exactly? It means that golfers are able to get the golf ball on the ground quicker, so that it is touching the grass tips and resulting in forward roll, which is critical. It’s all about effective loft at impact. If you forward press and deloft the putter at impact or if you lean back on the putter and create more loft, the SIK putters can help. The loft values on the face of the SIK putters decrease from top to bottom beginning at 4° to 1°. NOBODY can match the shaft angle from address to impact at any consistent rate. This leads to inconsistent launch angles, which result in poor distance control. DLT (Descending Loft Technology) delivers consistent launch angles regardless of shaft lean at impact which leads to more consistent and predictable rolls.

SIK (Study in Kinematics) putters are currently being fit at the two Club Champions in Denver. A full fitting system is available

at their locations. SIK features 5 head options in matte black or silver, with two different sight line configurations and can be matched with 4 hosel choices. If arm lock putting is your preference, that variety is also procurable.

Get rolling and make more putts by get-

ting the ball on the ground!

Cheers to 20 years! The 2021 golf season marks Eagle Ranch Golf Club’s 20th year of operation

An Arnold Palmer Signature Design Course, Mr. Palmer visited the course just a few weeks after it opened and General Manager Jeff Boyer, who served as his caddy that day, has been managing the course for the past two decades. A lot has happened since the summer of 2001, including a family-friendly mountain community that has grown around the golf course, which sits on what was once a working ranch in the early to mid-1900s. Eagle Ranch Golf Club is truly a reflection of the community, where there is something for golfers age 7 to 70 and beyond. With five sets of tees, there’s fairness for golfers of all abilities. Kim and Victor Galko have lived and golfed in Eagle Ranch for

the last 17 years. “Jeff Boyer and his staff have provided many avenues for the community to develop long lasting friendships for young and old alike; on and off the golf course, while enjoying the game of golf.”

who all became good friends. One of the greatest joys for me is to see our junior programs thrive and get to see those kids grow up," says Boyer.

Eagle Ranch Golf Club and its staff support several competitive tournaments and scrambles, host junior golf events and practices, and is a founding partner in The First Tee of Eagle County Chapter, which aims to educate and inspire youth academically, socially, and physically through the game of golf.

The course is popular among locals who enjoy its challenging layout, excellent course conditions and a longer season than most mountain courses. Along with taking care of the golf course, Superintendent Derek Rose and his staff proudly take care of nature as well, and the course has been certified as an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary since 2003.

"I feel very blessed to have been at Eagle Ranch for 20 years now. I have had the pleasure to work with so many wonderful staff members and golfers

Like Boyer, Rose has also been in his position since the course opened. “Looking back at the past 20 years, I am so honored to say I have been a

part of the golf course growing from plans on paper into an absolutely beautiful Arnold Palmer Signature Course. It has also been a lot of fun to watch the Eagle Ranch development grow into this wonderful place where there is such a strong sense of community.” Eagle Ranch Golf Club is located in the picturesque small town of Eagle, just 30 minutes west of Vail. The course is open to the public and includes a terrific practice facility and grille, which serves breakfast, lunch and refreshments all season long on its patio with spectacular views. The Colorado Golf Expo Moves to the Colorado Convention Center Feb. 25-27 If the pandemic wasn’t enough, now the home of the Denver Golf Expo for the last 29 years, The Denver Mart, is being torn down. Oh well, we can’t sit around afraid of change. In the case of the pandemic, protect ourselves and loved ones but keep on living our lives. In the case of the Golf Expo, they had to find a new home. After reviewing the available venue options the “Colorado Golf Expo” (aka Denver Golf Expo) has contracted with the Colorado Convention Center (CCC) to become their new home.

The reasons CCC won? Simple:

• Stability of the operation! A team of experienced people ready to help. • Professionalism! The place is always taken care of in the right way and looks good. • Premier location! The CCC is the best location in Colorado to host an event. • Opportunity! The downtown venue will help us attract new people to the event, people that were not that interested in attending any event held at The Mart.

The biggest questions first:

• Parking? There is a light rail stop underneath the CCC. It is strongly recommend you use it. They will also research the best places close by to

park and will publish those on their website as well as great eating places in case you want to bring your spouse and make a day of it. • Price increase? Yes the prices will have to go up slightly because of the new location but prices would have gone up regardless of where they took the show. Truth be told, we had it good at the Mart from a cost standpoint. • Date Change? Yes. The event is February 25-27, Hall F of the Colorado Convention Center.

Do you believe in new opportunities? The Colorado Golf Expo does! The pandemic has grown the game of golf in ways no one could have predicted. Courses are full of new people loving the game many of us have loved for years. Have you tried to get a tee time lately? Oh, and if you havent picked up on it yet, the show will NOW be known as the Colorado Golf Expo! The times are certainly changing. Exhibitor registration is now open! Please plan to support them as they inaugurate a new era for the Colorado Golf Expo. For more information please call 303-771-2000 ext 15 or visit the website at www.expomasters.com. D

The Mental Game

Self-hypnosis training. An excerpt from - Golf: Peak Performance through Self-Hypnosis Training By Dr. Joseph Tramontana DIVOT Contributing Writer

The author first asks golfers, or any athletes, for that matter, how much of their competition do they believe is mental. Golfers often give high percentages, such as 90% or 75%. The next obvious question is: “So how much of your training time is spent on the mental side of your competition?” Often the answer is ZERO or some small percentage. So, the purpose of the book, Excerpt from Golf: Peak Performance through Self-Hypnosis Training, is to help golfers learn techniques to improve their mental game. This is accomplished by learning self-hypnotic techniques to improve focus and concentration while blocking out distractions. A formal definition of Hypnosis is: “Hypnosis is a state of consciousness involving focused attention and reduced peripheral awareness characterized by an capacity for response to suggestion.”

With sports and life, the idea is: “Whether you think you are a success or think yourself a failure, in either case you are right.” Excerpt from Golf: Peak Performance through Self-Hypnosis Training teaches step-by-step techniques to get in what athletes like to call “in the zone.” That is, to get yourself out of the negative self-talk and replace it with affirmative self-talk. Also, to be able to quickly forget the last shot (whether positive or negative) and focus on the next one. Too much focus on the past shot, good or bad, prevents you from focusing on what is next. The author covers topics such as self-hypnosis training, inspirational stories and affirmations, recovering from injury and return to training and competition, dealing with anxiety, and substance use/ abuse issues.

Here’s an excerpt... The human mind is a powerful phenomenon. Interestingly, nobody knows exactly what it is. We know the brain is an organ, but what we call “mind” cannot be extracted after death, as an organ can. We know, however, that the mind is so powerful that people can think of themselves as successful or think themselves as failures, and often, their behavior will follow suit, just as they might think of themselves as sick and get sick, versus thinking of themselves as well and be well. Self-hypnosis training will not necessarily improve the mechanics of your performance; that is for your golf coach to help you fine-tune. However, the mental techniques in the preceding chapters can certainly help you get your head on straight, as I have heard many golfers state. How many times have you heard people say

that a golfer had a great swing but had “head problems?” All the suggestions in this book will help you get your head on straight rather than letting it get in your way. About the author Joseph Tramontana, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist who specializes in hypnosis and self-hypnosis training. He has published two previous books titled "Hypnotically Enhanced Treatment for Addictions: Alcohol abuse, Drug abuse, Gambling, Smoking, and Weight Loss" and "Sports Hypnosis in Practice: Scripts, Strategies, and Case Examples." While these two books were written for other hypnotists, therapists or counselors working with addictions or athletes, his new book, “Golf: Performance through Self-Hypnosis Training,” is written directly for the golfer. Book Available: The book is available at Archway Publishing, Amazon and Barnes & Noble. D
