Play More Golf with DIVOT Magazine and Denver Golf Expo By Diana Rowe DIVOT Contributing Writer

For many golfers, 2018 marks the year of New Year’s golf-themed resolutions. Whether yours is to get more golf fit, play more courses or more often, improve your swing, take a few strokes off your score, or all of these, the partnership of Divot Magazine and Denver Golf Expo kick starts the season each year.

Step into the perfect setting and place to inspire golfers in February: the annual Denver Golf Expo, the Rocky Mountain’s largest golf expo. This year’s dates are February 9-11 at the Denver Mart.

Each year the DGE attracts more than 12,000 attendees, exhibitors and vendors who are passionate about the game of golf and brings everyone together under one roof for an action-packed, 3-day weekend.

“We want to encourage golfers to be healthier, visit local courses, experience more golf in Colorado and beyond, improve their game, and simply get out and golf,” says Mark Cramer, President of the Denver Golf Expo. “All that and more can happen when attending the Denver Golf Expo.” Here is just a sampling of the golfthemed opportunities at the 2018 Denver

Golf Expo: • Take a new 2018 club for a swing at Demo Days direct from PGA show, thanks to Lenny’s Golf. (Be sure to take advantage of Lenny’s offer of free club fitting at their store!) • Meet professionals from the PGA, Colorado Golf Association, the Junior Golf Alliance, and the Colorado Women’s Golf Association. • During the 3-day expo, attend one of nearly a dozen free seminars, ranging in topics from swing biomechanics to putting. • Improve your game at the expo by taking a free golf lesson courtesy of the Co. Section of PGA.

• Stop by over 120 exhibitors booths, including dozens of local golf courses – many offering show-only discounted golf packages. • Meet (and get to know) your local PGA professionals from those courses. • Plan your next golf vacation. • Purchase exclusive show-only deals on equipment, golf vacations, apparel and more.

And that’s not all! Included with your admission, attendees also receive: • Golf Digest subscription. • Free parking • Fore Golf Program: golf 2-for-1’s and discounts at South Suburban Parks &

Recreation • Enter to win GRAND PRIZE a trip for 4 to Bandon Dunes Golf Resort!

The Denver Golf Expo is also the perfect place to bring your golfing buddies. And with all this under one roof, golfers might just feel a little less remorse that it’s still winter and get inspired to get golfing at the first sign of spring.

Save the date for the 2018 Denver Golf Expo, Friday – Sunday, February 9-11. For more information, go to DenverGolfExpo.com, where you can also purchase tickets in advance. D

Denver Golf Expo Parking Tips at the Denver Mart By Diana Rowe DIVOT Contributing Writer

Parking is still free!

Or another way to look at it is your parking is INCLUDED with your admission ticket. Makes that ticket price seem a lot more reasonable doesn’t it? Since 2013, Denver Golf Expo made the decision to buy out the parking for the DGE attendees which saves you $5 but costs us $8,000 a year. Some people complain about the cost to get in but we only raised the admission price by $1. Unfortunately we also get complaints about how far some people have to walk to the front door. With more than 12,000 attendees descending on the Denver Mart, finding a park spot sometimes can become difficult.

• Most of all, enjoy the Golf Expo. It is meant to be fun and to help you save some money on your golf for the year which should bring a smile to the grinchiest of grinches! D

Consider these 5 tips to Stress-free Parking: • If you’re lucky enough to snag a space right up front, be thankful. If, however, your parking spot is tucked away in the corners, consider it as “the walking distance to your ball after a pretty average drive on a long par 3” because that is about how far it will be to the front door. No more. • Saturday morning is the busiest day in the morning. Consider attending on Friday or Sunday or after noon on any of the 3 days of the Expo. • Plan to arrive sometime other than first thing in the morning especially on Saturday. • Use the East lot across Washington Street and take the free shuttle to the front door. • Carpool if possible. Bring a friend – golfing is more fun with a four-some and so is the Expo!

Play More Golf with the Fore Golf Program, courtesy of South Suburban By Diana Rowe DIVOT Contributing Writer

Denver metro golfers don’t have to travel far to discover golf-worthy courses in Colorado, including those within the South Suburban Parks & Recreation Golf Courses family. A Denver Golf Expo staple, South Suburban Parks & Recreation Golf Courses return to the 2018 Expo, with its free Fore Golf Program to inspire golfers to get out and play.

Bill Ramsey, Director of Golf at South Suburban Parks & Recreation says, “Our goal with this package is to encourage attendees of the Expo to get out and play more golf. Our four courses are different with varying design and difficulty. We have a course that will appeal to all ages and levels of golfers. We are offering, free to all attendees for taking the survey inside the entrance, our Fore Golf Program, featuring a free round of golf at Family Sports and 2 for 1 at any of our other courses”.

Family Sports

Lone Tree Golf Tips to Get going in Golf According to Bill Ramsey, who has taught thousands of lessons to players of all abilities, “One of the most critical components of learning the game is frequency.” Ramsey also offers these additional golf tips: • Contact a local PGA professional – and the Expo is a good opportunity to meet one at a course near

• •

• •

you, including the golf pros and staff at SSPR. Stop by their booth! Take a series of lessons and spread them out over the golf season. Learn to use your body and big muscles; more than your hands and arms. Proper use of larger muscles gives golfer more solid contact with the ball. A local PGA professional is the perfect partner to work on your golf swing. Don’t underestimate the value of the short game. The short game helps you become a better golfer and lower your handicap. Learn the correct fundamentals and then practice. And practice more. No time for 18 holes? Play 9. No time for 9 holes? Go to the driving range. Go to the driving range frequently.

More about golf at South Suburban Parks & Recreation: All SSPR courses are affordable and accessible to everyone – whether new to the game or a scratch golfer. The four courses are the Lone Tree Golf Club, Littleton Golf Club, South Suburban Golf Course, and the Family Sports Golf Course. First Tee Denver: Inspiring Kids to Golf By Diana Rowe DIVOT Contributing Writer

If you’re reading this, statistics* show you’re likely one of the nearly 26 million people in the United States who played golf within the last 12 months. Your average annual income was $95,000. The largest percentage of U.S. golfers are married, mostly men (estimated 77.5% male versus 22.5% female) with an average age of 54.

But golf is catching on with kids. Thanks to programs like First Tee of Denver, the Mile High City's local chapter, and the second largest chapter in the nation, more children are getting in on the game. In 2010, national statistics* show 2.5 million junior players between the ages of 6 and 17. According to Nick Johnson, Director of Programming at First Tee of Denver, “We worked with 6,500 kids in 2017 who visited a golf course 4-6 times. We take kids from all walks of life and introduce them to

the game of golf. A golf course is a great place for kids to learn valuable life lessons. Young people who participate in The First Tee program are introduced to Nine Core Values that represent some of the many inherently positive values connected with the game of golf – and parents are encouraged to reinforce these behaviors.”

First Tee Denver currently offers kids opportunities to play on 18 golf courses in Denver and across Front Range. Courses open to these kids are located as far south as Highlands Ranch Golf Club and north at Fairways at the Stables in Superior – and even on the western slope at the Cedaredge Golf Course.

Witness that inspiration at the Denver Golf Expo when First Tee Denver invites kids of all ages to stop by their set up at the Pitching Lesson and Contest area. Parents bring your kids. Ask questions about their program and how it works.

Then take the challenge as First Tee is sponsoring a pitching contest (for all ages). In addition, kids are invited to put their short game to the test on the putting green and participate in the chipping contest. There

will be one winner per day.

Columbine Country Unveils New Clubhouse Columbine Country Club unveiled the brand new $25 million clubhouse to members in October 28, 2017.

After two years the $25 million, 60,000 square foot clubhouse opened its doors and welcomed guests on Saturday, October 28, 2017. The project consisted of a complete scrape and rebuild of the club’s clubhouse and pool facility. The new clubhouse was designed by renowned architects Marsh & Associates, Inc. and built by local, award-winning contractor, Hyder, Inc. The new clubhouse includes more family activity space, indoor golf simulators, luxurious locker rooms, a state of the art fitness/wellness center along with dramatic outdoor seating with fire pits and lawn space for about 200.

The focus on amenities at Columbine didn’t stop at the clubhouse. Memorial Day weekend 2016, the completely-renovated tennis and pool facility opened with a dramatic facelift. Improvements included locker rooms, additions of outside covered lounge areas, a dining pavilion, a new bar and restau-

rant, and expanded family sports offerings. “The finishes represent us at the same level as the golf course, which is a nationally renowned golf course home to multiple tour events,” General Manager Michael Brachter explained. “When you have that caliber of golf, you really need to step up and deliver a world-class product.”

The project would not have been possible

Featured Product

If you look good, you play better Birdie Babe Golf was started in 2011 by Jill Beyer when she couldn’t find cute women’s golf equipment to stock their pro shop. The Beyers own a small executive golf course and wanted to encourage women to play. When she started researching, the more she realized there was not a lot of girly golf bags available, and the few available were big, heavy, old-fashioned cart bags, and often very expensive. Or they were just a guys version with a little pink thrown in.

Having witnessed through the girl’s golf team that practices at their course, and local women’s leagues, girls and women seem more engaged in the game if they have fun stuff to wear and use and like when playing with their friends. Women are the future of growing the game, and Birdie Babe thinks it is especially important to encourage girls and women to play and have fun.

So coming from a long line of entrepreneurs and being one her whole life, Jill decided on a cold January day in Minnesota, to start a golf bag business. “How hard can

stand bag rolled into one, with lots of pockets and a large insulated cooler. The bags also have a stand, which is handy for those who aren’t lucky enough to live on a golf course and have to lug their bags around. Nothing worse than pulling your bag out of the car and setting it down and having it fall over and damage your expensive clubs. For those who want a more traditional bag (though nothing is “traditional” about Birdie Babe golf bags), they have the new cart bag that also weighs just 5 pounds, with 14 full length dividers, lots of pockets for all your necessities, and even a cooler pocket for your “birdie juice”.

that be, right? Well, let’s just say I learned a lot!” After much research and interviewing women and going through several redesigns, she figured out women usually take carts and if they walk, usually use pull carts, so a traditional carry bag wasn’t the focus. However, women also like bags that

are lightweight and they like the stand, so they would often buy a carry bag because of those features, even though they had no intention of carrying them except from their car. Thus, the “hybrid” bag was born. It has all the features of a cart bag and a

So now, even if you are more of a “bogey babe”, you can get your inner “birdie babe” on and look great on the course, and most importantly, have fun! Because, as Jill says, “if you look good, you play better, and if you don’t play better, well, you still look good!”

How often have you played a round with no expectations, no goals, just an intention of enjoying yourself? I can think of a handful. What is it about the first round of the season that often feels like the best? You walk away with this idea of it can only get better from here. You raise the bar, the goals and more importantly your expectations of what the season “should” look like.

What is it about expectations that often times set us up for failure? The definition is a strong belief that something will happen or be the case in the future. The key word here is future. We set ourselves up for disappointment, in a sense by stepping into the future. Expectations, to a certain degree motivate us, however half way through a round we start to lose motivation because our round is not necessarily going as “planned”. Once this happens we start to get frustrated and enter that space of negativity and self-doubt.

Intention is a different way to approach the game, however it is challenging. When intention is our mode of operation, during a round, we give up the idea that our past dictates our future. Let’s go back to the first round of the season. We aren’t in a place of looking at the past or future rounds because it hasn’t happened, we are in the present.

INTENTIONAL GOLF SPRING SERIES MAKE 2018 YOUR BEST SEASON YET!

The idea is we haven’t had an opportunity to play enough to compare to another round. Why then do we set expectations and raise the bar as we play more? Why can’t we be more present or intentional each round?

Golf is not a game of perfect, as Bob Rotella would tell you, and no round is ever the same. Why then do we put these expectations on ourselves to play or perform the same all the time? Because the industry itself, I believe, has set us up for disappointment. We read all these articles on quick fixes, tips, new equipment and watch these professionals play exceptional golf and think we “should” be able to do so as well. We place unrealistic expectations on ourselves rather than placing importance on being present and doing the best you can, in the moment with what you have. In other words, when we play with intention, commitment and purpose one shot at a time it keeps us from thinking too much into the future.

Intentional golf is a mode of operation that can teach us to live and play more in the present. The beautiful thing about golf is that every shot, every hole and every swing you get the opportunity to start fresh. Letting go of what happened prior and letting go of what could happen in the future. The lesson in all of this is golf is the one sport that allows us to practice being present for several hours at a time. What a gift golf can be in our lives, but it is up to us to see this gift of presence, when we do, that is when the round of a lifetime happens. D

There’s no reason to winterize your golf game

THE LEDGES GOLF CLUB h, the wintertime in Colorado! We all love our Denver winters: fresh fallen snow, hitting the ski slopes, terrible traffic on I-25. Okay, maybe we don’t love all aspects of winter here in Denver. The truth is, as soon as the white stuff starts to fall some of us start counting down the days till we can hit the greens again.

O

Well there’s no reason to winterize your golf game in Denver. In just an hour and 40 minutes you can be in one of the most spectacular year-round desert golf destinations, St. George, Utah. You’ve probably heard about the amazing courses there like Sand Hollow and the Troon property, Entrada. What you may not have heard is that daily direct flights from DEN to SGU make getting there a cinch. Just a short aeronautical hop, skip and a jump over the Rockies, puts you in a palm tree desert golf oasis, any time of the year.

10 courses in a 10-mile radius make St. George an ideal place for golf groups and weekend getaways. Who wants to leave the hustle and bustle of the Denver Metro area just to sit in more traffic trying to get to a golf course? In St. George, all the courses are within a 15-minute drive. No more traffic, no more pollution, just blue skies, sunshine and open fairways. Sounds pretty good right about now, huh?

The other thing most Coloradans don’t know is how amazingly affordable St. George Golf is. At most desert golf destinations you expect to pay upwards of $250 for the premier course in the area. Sand Hollow, Entrada, Coral Canyon are about half that, even in peak season. The Red Rock Golf Trail is an extremely helpful service provided by the local tourism office to help interested golfers get the inside

scoop on which courses to play and how to get some great deals on Stay & Play packages. They’ve got top quality hotels as well as condos and vacation rentals right on the course. So whether you’re looking for the 5-star treatment at Entrada, or the quick low-cost weekend getaway, they’ve got you covered.

Don’t be fooled by the affordable green fees. As golfers we often shop golf courses like we shop hotels. You might search for a room between $50-$150. No one really wants the $50 room because you know exactly what you get for that. You scroll past to the properties around $100 because you’re more confident that your overall experience will be worth it. The same is true of selecting courses when you travel to play golf. A $50 golf course must not be worth playing otherwise they’d charge more. On the Red Rock Golf Trail that just doesn’t hold true. You can get on some of the most scenic and well-maintained courses for

ENTRADA GOLF COURSE

around $65: courses with elevated tees, fun green complexes and incredible scenery with red rock features literally built into every course. I mean seriously, just look at the pictures.

So whether you’re shooting around a boulder at Dixie Red Hills, across a red rock canyon at Green Spring, or along the cliffs edge of Sand Hollow, you’ll be left with an unforgettable experience that will leave you dreaming about Red Rock Golf for the rest of the year.

Besides tremendous golf, the St. George area is packed with outdoor adventure to keep your golf group happy after you finish the morning round. Zion National Park is only a 40-minute drive and is one of the nation’s top five most popular parks. If you haven’t been, definitely plan an extra day to experience it up close. I often tell golfers planning to come to St. George to make sure to pack their golf shoes and their hik-

ing shoes. You’ll need them both. Sorry, no golf carts on the hiking trails.

Or double up your interests and hit some of the world-renowned mountain biking trails in the area. Really, the tracks are so nice that many mountain biking events make their home in St. George. Even the ultimate event in mountain biking, the Red Bull Rampage attracts top pros from around the world to shred some incredible tracks and cut new lines, pushing the limits of mountain biking. Gooseberry Mesa, the Jem Trail, Bearclaw Poppy and Holy Guacamole are just a few to start with.

Don’t be confused, the red rocks of West Denver are one of our favorite features in the state, but it’s hard to compare to the year-round ongoing grandeur of St. George, Utah and the Red Rock Golf Trail. So when you’re tired of the snow, just remember the only “white stuff” flying in St. George, are golf balls down the fairway. D
