Applewood Golf Course Update

By Rhett McEmma DIVOT Contributing Writer

ince we last visited the possible sale of the land which is home to Applewood Golf Course so that it can be turned into 400 single family homes, much has happened yet a resolution does not seem imminent. What we know for certain is that in late June, Carlson and Associates, the developers who have a contract with the Coors Brewing Company to purchase the land in question, created Applewood West Holdings, LLC to file the formal application with Jefferson County to rezone the property from agricultural/light commercial to residential so they could move forward with their plans to develop a 400 house neighborhood where the golf course currently sits. The filing started the process of seeking comments about the request from the businesses, homeowner associations, and

S

state and county offices most affected, should the property be rezoned. These responses were due by July 22. On July 22nd many had responded in opposition to the application, including the Save Applewood Golf Course (SAGC) group who submitted a comprehensive thirty-five page report titled, the Statement in Opposition to the Application. One day later the Applewood Property Owners Association (APOA), also a part of SAGC, filed a lawsuit in Jefferson County District Court against Coors Brewing Company— owners of the property; Applewood West Holdings LLC—the rezoning applicant; and the Jefferson County Board of County Commissioners. The suit seeks a judgement declaring a 42 year old Colorado Statute, the Preservation of Precious Minerals Act, be invoked. This would effectively prevent the rezoning of the Applewood property since it is land identified on Colorado geological survey

maps created in the mid-seventies as land containing the needed minerals to fall under the umbrella of the statute. APOA is also seeking a preliminary injunction to stop the entire rezoning process on the grounds that the applicant had been made aware of the Preservation of Precious Minerals Act as far back as May 4th, yet chose to go forward with the rezoning process having full knowledge that the land in question is protected by Colorado statute. The hearing on APOA’s injunction request is scheduled for October 22nd should the applicant decide to continue the rezoning process. Realizing the law is so clear and the possibility to buy the course might become a reality, Jefferson County’s Prospect Recreation and Park District has been working hard to position themselves to be able to step in and buy the property from Coors should Applewood West Holdings, LLC decide to withdraw their rezoning request and step away from their deal with Coors. The

district has obtained independent appraisals on the land and is working to certify two ballot measures for the November 2015 ballot, which if passed would secure funds not to exceed 9 million dollars, money they hope would enable them to purchase and operate the Applewood Golf Course. Logic would dictate that the well organized and very vocal opposition to the rezoning of these precious 141 acres, coupled with the laws in place governing this property for decades, should mean a positive outcome for those opposed to the course being torn up in the name of progress. However, I couldn’t find anyone amongst those trying to save the course who is ready to plan a celebration party. Most are cautiously optimistic, but still suspicious of the applicant and not yet ready to let down their guard. Many thanks to Ron Busterud for access to so many of the documents created as a result of this controversial real estate deal. They were invaluable to this story. D

Lenny’s... At a time when the sale of golf equipment seems to require a superstore, an outlet store, and an online presence, how is it a mom and pop golf shop has thrived and survived for three decades?

By Rhett McEmma DIVOT Contributing Writer

n the southeast part of town, where Denver and Aurora merge, near the confluence of Hampden Ave., Havana St., and Parker Rd., at 2601 S. Parker Rd., sits a small unassuming golf store, Lenny’s Golf. This family run business has been providing top quality, knowledgeable service, to metro area golfers of all levels for three decades. They do it with second-to-none service and an unwavering belief in their ability to gain your trust and then help your golf game. Whether you’re an 85 year old greatgrandmother looking for a new driver to attack the local par3 course, or a highly ranked junior wanting to find more fairways or knockdown more flags, Lenny, son Nick, and their staff are there to see that your needs are met. Lenny’s has just about anything you would need for your golf game. Golf balls, golf shoes, tees, hats, umbrellas, and more. But when you enter don’t expect to see rows of golf slacks, and head covers from every college west of the Mississippi. At Lenny’s Golf you can find golf’s staples, but the thing they do best is measuring, observing, and finding you the right golf club for your particular size, swing, and swing speed. If you’re one of those easily affected by golf advertising and by salespeople, or who likes to pull the latest new thing off rack, slap a few into a net, and then dream of how you’ll melt stokes off your handicap with your new, popular, blistering hot, magic wands, Lenny’s might not be your store. But if want to have an honest conversation about your game, and have your current equipment and golf swing evaluated by a family that has made its mark on Colorado golf for three generations, go see Lenny. Lenny has been satisfying customers with his club fitting expertise and honest deals for 30 years. His father, Ed Nosewicz Sr., was a 2005 inductee into the Colorado

Golf Hall of Fame. His son Nick, the store’s General Manager and an accomplished golfer, recently at age 31, became the oldest golfer in 20 years to capture the Colorado Match Play Championship. It’s easy to see why they are so good at what they do, and once you’ve met them you realize you’ve just made new golf friends. Ones who can help you to improve your game with thoughtful analysis and a genuine concern for your budget. Stopping by Lenny’s for a golf club fitting takes only a few minutes and it can be incredibly enlightening. Golf is hard enough without making it harder using grips that don’t fit your hands, shafts that are too stiff, or that have a flex point wrong for you. If the lie angle on your current clubs are off, even just a degree or two, it can have a huge effect on your accuracy. Maybe your clubs only need a little fine tuning, or like me, need to be listed on EBay and replaced by something manufactured in the current century, either way Lenny and Nick are there to help you find the flaws in your current equipment and guide you to the most appropriate clubs for your swing. They do it not by trying to oversell you, or to get you into whatever club has the biggest markup. They do it by listening to what it is you’re trying to get out of the game, then by measuring and watching your swing while you test various clubs to find the one that fits both your swing and your wallet. Lenny’s is a golf store year round. If your sticks are in need of repair, you’re thinking of updating, if you have a wedge that’s lost its groove, or you just need to get a grip, Lenny’s staff is at the ready at all times of the year to help you scratch those golf bug itches. However, in the fall and winter Lenny condenses the golf store allowing it to also become one of Denver’s premier ski rental stores. Whether you hang up your golf clubs all winter and wear out a season pass, or just go skiing a couple of times a year, Lenny’s offers only the best equipment available each ski sea-

Lenny Nosewicz son, with unlimited free tuning for their season rental customers who pick them up when the snow starts flying and bring them back when the golf courses begin to turn green. No matter where you live in the metro area you are likely close to a large retail golf store. Fine establishments, all of them providing competitive prices and large in-

ventories with which to over-stimulate your senses. However, you can’t find the kind of golf lineage you can at Lenny’s Golf, few of them match the hospitality and experience at Lenny’s, and for certain none of them have Lenny, a golf buddy for everyman….and woman….and child. could be used to describe traveling around 18 holes while riding the new and revolutionary Golfboard. Playing a round of golf in Las Vegas on a Golfboard goes to a whole new level, and that’s exactly what you can do when you tee it up at Las Vegas National Golf Club, one of the most historic golf courses in the Las Vegas Golf Re-

gion. The legends have played here including Jack Nicklaus, Mickey Wright, Arnold Palmer, Tiger Woods, Dean Martin Sammy Davis, Jr., and many more, but a new generation is embracing the Golfboard and loving every minute of it. That’s right. You can now surf your way around this oasis in the desert—located just minutes from the Las Vegas Strip in a historic Vegas neighborhood and shadowed by hundreds of mature trees—and experience the future of golf while you bask in the history of a course where the legends of the game have won LPGA Tour or PGA TOUR events. Las Vegas National was the first course in the country to go all-in with the Golfboard, and have 20 available to rent on a daily basis, and on many days those boards are sold out so you need to reserve yours soon. The Golfboard is the brainchild of self-described snowboard addict Don Wildman, founder of Bally Total Fitness, had the original idea to use an electric skateboard to ride the steep slopes of his local Malibu course as a fun way to ‘get in some turns’ during the summer months. His passion turned into a business and early on the concept was also embraced by surfing superstar Laird Hamilton. What they have come up with is a new, fun and innovative way to play golf that adds excitement and can shave a lot of time off of a round of golf.. "We are always looking to attract new players to the game and bring new excitement to golfers who love the game, and offering the Golfboard is a perfect way to accomplish our goals,” says Las Vegas National General Manager Coy Wood. “The Golfboard is thrilling for golfers plus it can speed up the game in addition to being just plain fun. Plus, Las Vegas is the perfect place to launch a new product like this, and we are thrilled to have them here at Las Vegas National Golf Club, one of the most historic golf courses in Las Vegas. So we are embracing the future while we still honor the tradition of the game." While the Golfboard is a main “wow” factor at National, it’s also good to remember that the course hosts several charity and corporate outings annually, and due to its location just down the street from the resorts on Las Vegas Boulevard, it makes for a great location to host a business event or tournament. Or if you are traveling on a girl or guy buddy trip, LV National is a great place to bring your group no matter how large or small. The staff at National can customize a group package that may include golf, food and beverage, gift cards, etc. Plus, guests of events can also visit the Las Vegas Golf Hall of fame exhibit that is located in the clubhouse and is free and open to the public during course business hours. Golfboard rentals are $15 per nine holes and $20 per 18. Visit LasVegasNational.com for more details. Regardless of the lie of the balls, the player whose ball is farthest from the hole should always go first. Say, for instance, one player has a 10-foot chip and another has a 50-foot putt, the putt would be played first.

3. MYTH: When your ball finds a water hazard, you can play a provisional before looking for the original.

FACT: If you’re practically certain that your ball is in the water, you can’t hit a provisional. The next shot you play is considered the ball in play (with an added penalty

stroke). When hitting your ball into a hazard, proceed according to Rule 26. If you think there is a possibility that your ball could be outside the hazard, you can hit a provisional. If it turns out that the ball is actually in the hazard, you have to abandon the provisional.

4. MYTH: If your ball is in an unplayable lie, you’re allowed to drop in a spot which makes it ‘playable’.

FACT: You have three options, each with a penalty of one stroke, after declaring a ball unplayable. 1. Replay the previous shot. 2. Drop another ball behind the spot where the ball lies, keeping it directly in line with the hole, with no limit as to how far behind that point the ball is dropped. 3. Drop inside of two club-lengths from the spot where the ball is positioned, making sure to be no closer to the hole.

5. MYTH: You can take an out-ofbounds stake out of the ground, or take relief from any marker of the course’s boundary. FACT: You are not allowed to take relief from any marker of the course’s boundary. Play it as it lies or take it as an unplayable lie, proceeding under those options. You can’t have a ball marked off the green unless it interferes with your ball, stance or swing. 6. MYTH: You cannot ask for another player’s ball to be moved unless it affects your ball, swing or stance.

FACT: If you think that another ball may interfere with your ability to play a hole, you can ask that it is marked and lifted. However, the marked ball cannot be cleaned unless it is on a putting green. D

Illustrating Proper Footwork In The Golf Swing With Skates By Chad Miller DIVOT Contributing Writer

ost amateur golfers have difficulty transferring their weight in the golf swing. This is partly from a misconception of weight transfer and partly from poor footwork. Proper footwork is the key to properly transferring your weight in the golf swing. The great Jack Nicklaus was told by his first and only swing coach Jack Grout to roll his left ankle on the backswing and his right ankle on the through swing. This swing characteristic stuck with Nicklaus throughout his entire career and allowed him to properly transfer his weight back and through the golf swing. Let’s look at a good way to illustrate this proper footwork in the golf swing – with a pair of skates. Ice skates or hockey skates are similar in that they have an “edge” making it easy to roll your ankle from side to side without losing stability in your feet. If

you did lose stability you would fall over. As a result, it is easy to feel where your weight is pressured in your feet and the proper weight transfer. In the backswing there should be pressure on the inside of your right foot, similar to being on your inside edge of your hockey skates. This keeps your knees stable and allows your pelvis to pivot properly. Notice in the left image, you don’t want to roll your right ankle out on the backswing. By doing this, you will lift your right foot off the ground, sacrificing stability and power. As Jack Grout told Nicklaus, roll the LEFT ankle on the backswing, but not so much that it rolls the weight to the outside of the foot. You want to feel that the ankles are mobile while your feet are stable on the ground.

During the through swing or forward swing, pressure should be increased on the inside of the right foot as you push your center of gravity forward towards the target. The proper weight transfer will have a right leg that flexes and then extends in the forward swing. This action is similar to pushing the inside edge of your right skate into the ice or ground (blue arrow) to stride forward (red arrow). By pushing into the ground, you are essentially forced to roll your right angle as Grout told Nicklaus to do on the forward swing. As we take a closer look at the picture below, the move on the left depicts no transfer of weight initiated in the feet, while the right side picture clearly shows the forward movement of the center of gravity with a push off of

the right foot. See if you can replicate the proper footwork techniques the next time you’re out on the range and use the visuals of the skates to guide your ankles. Be sure to focus on the mobility of your ankles while maintaining stability with the bottom of your feet on the ground. Talk to a Certified Personal Coach to apply these techniques to your game!

Five Days of Golf that Changes Lives

When Cheryl Jensen set out to create a one-time program for military veterans and families to ski and enjoy winter in the Colorado Rockies, she didn’t realize that 12 years later the Vail Veterans Program would impact the lives of more than 600 wounded warriors and over 1,300 family members and caregivers. “After our first program in 2004, we realized there was a greater need to provide our military veterans and their families with ongoing programs that create a life-long community of support,” said Jensen, founder of the Vail Veterans Program. “We’ve evolved to provide both winter and summer programs. This was our third year to offer a week-long golf program and the demand to do a fourth next summer is tremendous.” The 3rd Annual Vail Veterans Golf Program took place the week of August 24 at courses throughout the Vail Valley including Red Sky Golf Club, the Vail Golf Club, Eagle Vail Golf Club and Beaver Creek Golf Club. Five days, five rounds of golf that helped transform lives. “The transformation and confidence that took place with the wounded warriors is truly remarkable,” said Vail Veterans Program alumnus Keith Williams, USMC staff member of the Naval Medical Center. “It is a tribute to incredible golf event that the Vail Veterans Program organizes. The level of care, concern and love inspired new trust with each participant. Golf is a powerful

I

healing sport for wounded warriors.” Highlights of the program include a special welcome from Brigadier General (ret.) and Heisman Trophy winner Pete Dawkins. CBS sport analyst and announcer Gary McCord also spent time with the veterans on the links. PGA Golf Professional Larry Rinker was on hand to give tips and techniques for improving their games via Trackman analysis and lessons. However, the week wasn’t just about tee shots and putting. It was about healing. Many veterans who have participated in the program have credited golf with getting them out of dark places. “This is the first time in my life that I have ever experienced any event like the Vail Veterans Program,” said Mike Beuoy, Coast Guard Third Class Petty Officer. “I feel truly humbled and honored to have been a part of it and to have been accepted by everyone here.” Beuoy, a former helicopter rescue swimmer who suffered a serious spinal cord, was one of a dozen first-time participants in the Vail Veterans Program golf event. In addition to golf, the veterans got to experience what it’s like to have a summer vacation in the Vail Valley. They dined at a selection of local restaurants, enjoyed outdoor activities, bowled, enjoyed spa treatments and much more. All made possible by generous donors. “All of the therapeutic programs of-

fered by the Vail Veterans Program are free of charge to the wounded warriors, their families and military medical staff the accompany the group,” added Jensen. Through rehabilitative sports and recreation activities like the golf program, the Vail Veterans Program helps to provide a sense of freedom to United States military personnel with catastrophic injuries including loss of multiple limbs, severe burns, spinal cord injuries, post-traumatic stress syndrome and traumatic brain injuries. “The Vail Veterans Program not only offers me a chance to reconnect in social

life but to play and see veterans with disabilities like myself and see all we are able to due despite limitations,” said Harvey Weiss, US Marine. “It also gives me that sense of welcome home I never got, unlike most coming back I didn't have family waiting or a spouse. It truly feels like that all who are involved from donors, to staff and people who just genuinely dedicate their time really put their heart into us and make us feel like family.” Most veterans who participate in the programs come directly from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio and the Naval Medical Center in San Diego. The veterans who participated in this summer’s golf program were from San Diego, San Antonio and Salt Lake City. The Vail Veterans Program is a nonprofit is based in the Vail Valley, home to mountains ranges offering healing nature, and a plethora of outdoor activities, including whitewater rafting, ziplining, horseback riding, fly fishing, golfing and mountain biking in the summer, as well as skiing and snowboarding in the winter. For many of the wounded warriors, performing any of these activities would seem nearly impossible. The Vail Veterans Program makes these ideas a reality. And for most families, watching these achievements happen is a significant turning point for each caregiver. Each veteran receives individualized attention during their trips, focusing on goals the family wants to accomplish. Avoiding Winter’s Madness

Cape Kidnappers, New Zealand By Peter Hellman DIVOT Contributing Writer

Days shorter, leaves turning and soon to drop, anticipating winter’s bone chill.

Southern USA: There is no question that Florida, Arizona and the deserts of California can give you some of what you seek. The advantages of these locales is that they are not far away, getting there is fairly inexpensive and even driving is an option. The disadvantages are that everyone else has the same idea, prices are at high season rates and because it is

still winter, the days are short, often cold with unpredictable weather and frost delays. I haven’t even mentioned one of my pet peeves – over-seeding of fairways and greens.

But, if time and budget allow, here are three ideas of places to go where Spring is just starting, Summer is our winter, Fall is

urry! Go play. Warm days are soon gone. Use what skills you gained this summer and pray you won’t lose them over the freezing golf-less months ahead. Oh sure, there will be a few short days when the temperature rises into the 50’s and the snow slowly melts for a while. So, bundled up you venture to your favorite course, drive your ball down a brown, geese pooped fairway to a frozen lumpy green and say to yourself as did Peggy Lee in her song, “Is That All There Is?”

H

Well, my golfing friends don’t despair, there is more. A world of golf awaits and all you have to do is find it and I’m here to help. I’ll share with you places I have visited during winters past to find green fairways, speedy greens and warm sun. Perhaps you will get ideas for your own escape.

Chapelco Golf Club, San Martín de los Andes, Argentina

our spring and water drains counter-clockwise in toilets and sinks – it’s the Southern Hemisphere. Argentina: What can I say? I love this place. It’s scenic, huge, inexpensive, sophisticated, has cowboys (called gauchos), grass fed beef and great wine. And, it has a long golf tra-

dition thanks to English railroad engineers who came here in the late 19th century to build the nations rail system. You will swear that you are in England or Scotland when you arrive at some of the golf clubs around Buenos Aires such as San Andres (Spanish for St. Andrews) and the Jockey Club. Like other foreign destinations, Argentina suffers a weak currency (the Peso) and your dollar gets you 11% more spending power this year than last. You might even want to slip over the border to Brazil (you will need a visa) where your buying power is up 50% this year. NewZealand: This has to be one of the world’s friendliest countries and they even speak English – with an accent of course. I am not kidding when I say it’s a long flight to Auckland, the capital and major city, but if you have 10 to 14 days for travel, New Zealand is a super place for golf. Both the North and South Islands are festoon with great wineries, stunning mountains, endless beaches and some of the top golf courses in the world. And, though I would not call New Zealand inexpensive, your dollar still gets you $1.60 New Zealand dollars, 23% more than last year. I recommend New Zealand as a great couples’ destination because there is so much to do and share. Even a non-golfing spouse will be happy here and would not forgive you if you went without her/him. South Africa: Speaking of a great couples destination, add South Africa to the list. The reason? Well, first of all, there is great golf. I played

seven top courses on a visit two years ago and barely scratch the surface of what is available. To get the best experience, I played courses from just outside Kruger National Park in the north, to courses south of Elizabeth Town, north of Cape Town and around Cape Town. This vast country is both geographically and ethnically diverse and has wild life only seen in zoos. The accommodations are first class and so is the wine. But, you don’t go all the way to South Africa just to play golf. Whether it is the massive Kruger National Park or one of the many private game reserves, a safari stay has to be part of your South African experience. A couple of days in Cape Town is also a must. Like New Zealand, you need to commit to 10 to 14 days as the flight is long. South Africa is also a bargain. Not only are price low, you get about 13.50 rands to the dollar and that’s almost 17% lower than last year.

Naturally, there are other fine place to find pleasant weather, green grass, great values, splendid accommodations and world class golf this winter, but these are a few you may want to consider. Call me at 303.874.7134, I will share my experiences with you so that you can make up your mind about your winter escape. Fight “winter madness”- play golf in shorts.

Divot Magazine Auto Review 2015 Chrysler 300S AWD

I

n 2015, Chrysler has completely redesigned the front and rear ends of the 300, while maintaining the car’s traditional shape. With a larger, redesigned grille, and new lighting features, the remainder of the car continues to carry the swagger that has made the car so popular. The interior of the 2015 Chrysler 300 is new too with a redesigned steering wheel and instrument panel. A rotary shift knob controls the eight-speed automatic transmission, which is now standard for both V-6 and V-8 models. All models get a standard 7-inch full-color display in front of the driver, as well. Thanks to the eight-speed automatic transmission now being paired with both the V-

8 and V-6 engines, the 2015 300 is more efficient than last year, offering up to 31 mpg highway, a figure Chrysler says is best in class. On the performance side of things, the 3.6liter V-6 is has no problems with accelerating. With 292 horses, the V-6 is very strong and smooth. I test drove the V-6 300S model which has a slight performance enhancement over the 300. But if you really want horsepower, the V-8 model, which is available in the 300S and 300C lines, increases the output up to 363 hp from a 5.7-liter HEMI V-8. Coupled with the new eight-speed transmission, this HEMI can move the large 300 to 60 mph in just 5.8 seconds, an improvement of 0.2 seconds over last year’s five-speed automatic.

All that being said, handling is more about comfort and ride quality than performance. After all, this is a large sedan. And the standard electric power steering makes those steep Colorado mountain road twist and turns something to look forward too. Seating is also geared toward comfort,

whether you’re in the front or rear seats, there’s plenty of adjustability and headroom. There’s even enough space in the trunk for all four sets of golf clubs! For more information, please visit www.chrysler.com. D

With a big 301-horsepower V-8, it accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in just 7.8 seconds, and the six-speed automatic transmission provides quick, smooth shifts. The standard “Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System” helps keep the GX 460 level in corners and in those precarious off-road situations. In the GX you sit very high compared to

other vehicles in this class, so there's great visibility. Well padded seats and plenty of support combine with plenty of headroom and legroom make this a really great place to be. The second row is roomy too and with the side-opening back hatch there’s plenty of packing space to accommodate those long weekend getaways. The GX is now in it’s sixth year and hasn't seen many changes since its debut in 2010. However, there were a few updates to the exterior including the new "spindle" grille, LED daytime-running lights and headlamps, and new wheels. The carved-out fenders and tall, beltline do
