Canongate Colorado...
Private Golf Embracing
T
hose who belong to Canongate may know the name was selected for a club that opened on the south side of Atlanta, Georgia in 1965. Canongate established new ground in golf at that time with a vision of providing a membership experience that was high quality, yet affordable, embracing more golfers. The Canongate concept gives members private club privileges for a modest entry fee and low monthly dues—offering incredible value. Canongate is also known for its unique reciprocity that allows members to play all courses in the portfolio, conveniently located near each other. It’s like joining multiple private clubs for the price of one. Today, Canongate provides this membership experience at 23 clubs in the Atlanta area, 5 in the Houston area, and now at Blackstone Country Club in Aurora, and Black Bear Golf Club in Parker. Membership at Canongate also provides the entire family with access to an array of benefits and amenities, along with the area’s top instruction, camps, leagues and member associations. At Blackstone, members can enjoy a workout in the 2,000 square-foot Fitness Center featuring state-of-the-art training and cardiovascular equipment. In the summer, members can relax by the junior Olympic-sized swimming pool or spend the days on terrace overlooking Colorado’s Front Range and lush golf course enjoying Country Club dining. At Black Bear Golf Club, members enjoy the Kids Play Free program where children or grandchildren of club members walk for free or ride for only $5. The Sundown Program is also popular at Black Bear, allowing members to play for a $4 green fee and $5 cart fee after spec-

ified times during the week. After a round of golf, members can enjoy the grill fare in the Irish Embassy Pub or outside on the scenic veranda. While the golf season is not yearround in our area, the club activities certainly are! Activities include holiday parties, wine dinners, brunches, barbeques, Canvas and Cocktails for the ladies, family night dinners, kids’ movie nights and much more. Black Bear is a Jeff Brauer design that opened as “Canterberry Golf Club” in 1996. It is located just blocks from downtown historic Parker and is one of the most distinctive courses in the Rocky Mountain region. In 2010, Black Bear completed a vast array of improvements including bunker renovation, expansion of the driving range and much more. Blackstone Country Club was the creative vision of Golf Magazine’s 1996 Architect of the Year, Jay Morrish. The layout is 7,313 yards from the championship tees and is framed by the Rocky Mountains to the west. A variety of membership products are available, beginning with the Black Bear Classic. This option starts at a $500 one time entry fee and $135 in dues for the family, providing full golf and dining access at Black Bear, with limited access to Blackstone. A Canongate Colorado membership begins at $1,250 entry fee and $185 a month for the family providing access to golf, dining, fitness, tennis, pool and social events. So, membership opportunities are varied. Canongate Colorado is the lifestyle change your family has been looking for, and now it is within your reach. he National Golf Foundation (NGF) recently released Golf Facilities in the U.S. – 2013 Edition, the annual tally of U.S. golf course development and total golf supply. The report summarizes the nation's total supply of daily fee, municipal, and resort golf courses, as well as private clubs including the number of golf course openings and closures in 2012, as well as the number currently in planning and under construction. Among key findings, the report shows that 2012 is the seventh consecutive year that golf course closures outpaced openings. NGF tracked 13.5 eighteen-hole course openings versus 154.5 closures, for a net negative of 141. To put the seven consecutive years of closures in perspective, during the golf course development boom from 1988-2005, golf course supply grew by more than 4,500 (over 30%). Golf course openings remain at historic lows, but given the condition of the overall economy many feel that this is not surprising. What is surprising is that golf course projects under construction in 2012 is 199 courses in development (ei-
ther under construction, in planning, or proposed projects). Roughly 73% of these projects are new facilities, with the remainder representing expansions to existing golf facilities (e.g., 9-hole addition). As the real estate market continues to recover, we may see more closures and fewer developments under construction. High residential inventories and low commercial occupancy rates, combined with a tightening of credit, have stymied some developers who would otherwise be building new courses or eying distressed golf courses for potential re-development. A gradually improving ratio of supply and demand will help course operators, but not as much as continued good weather! The National Golf Foundation, founded in 1936 and based in Jupiter, Fla., is the industry's knowledge leader on the U.S. golf economy. NGF delivers independent and objective market intelligence, insights and trends to fulfill its mission: To Keep Golf Businesses Ahead of the Game. Corporate Sponsorship Packages Still Available for the 2013 Solheim Cup
W
ith the 2013 Solheim Cup coming to Colorado Golf Club in Parker, Colo., this August, there are numerous corporate sponsorship and advertising opportunities for Colorado businesses and organizations of all sizes. A variety of sponsorship packages – ranging from $12,000 to $150,000 – are available to serve the needs of any business, organization or corporation and allow for a one-of-a-kind experience at the prestigious international event. The packages include amenities and features such as cottage rental, hospitality privileges, social functions, golf excursions, VIP function invitations and advertising. If recent installments of the event are any indication, The Solheim Cup’s reach and value are growing at impressive levels. The Ladies European Tour (LET) announced that the 2011 Solheim Cup – held at Killeen Castle in County Meath, Ireland, had a $37 million ($49 million U.S.) impact to the area. According to Repucom International and Sports Marketing Surveys, the three-day event’s impact to the host county of Meath was $23 million ($30.5 million U.S.), with an additional $14 million ($18.5 million U.S.) in value coming from brand exposure through international television, print and online coverage. “I am delighted to see that The Solheim Cup brought a significant economic benefit to Meath and to Ireland as a whole,” said Leo Varadkar, Ireland’s minister of transport, tourism and sport. “Just as important was the fact that visitors to The Solheim Cup went away satisfied, with 90 percent saying that they enjoyed the experience. The challenge now is to build on this and ensure that we continue to reap the benefits of hosting The Solheim Cup.” More than 1,200 hours of The Solheim Cup were broadcast worldwide in 2011, with 7.6 million viewers turning in to watch the action. In addition, nearly 8,500 print and online articles were written about the event, according to the LET. “Meath was delighted to welcome The 2011 Solheim Cup to the county,” said Kevin Stewart, Meath’s director of economic development. “We worked hard to
14

help deliver a memorable event and we are pleased to see the very positive impact that it had for Meath businesses and for the local economy.” The last time the event was held in the United States, in Sugar Grove, Ill., in 2009, more than 120,000 people attended the one-of-a-kind competition. The Golf Channel televised 74 hours of Solheim Cup coverage, and the direct economic impact was more than $19 million. Solheim Cup sponsors have been more than pleased by their return on investments and have praised the event for years. “The 2009 Solheim Cup was an extremely valuable client event for the CME Group and our guests,” said Anita Liskey, managing director, corporate marketing and communications, CME Group. “The unique combination of sports and patriotism, combined with the talent and personalities of the players, left an incredible quality experience that will long be remembered.” Corporate hospitality packages are now available on www.SolheimCup.com, or by calling 1-800-2SOLHEIM for more information. ABOUT THE SOLHEIM CUP The Solheim Cup combines the tradition and prestige of the game of golf with passion for one’s country. This biennial, trans-Atlantic team match-play competition features the best U.S.-born players from the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Tour and the best European members from the Ladies European Tour (LET). The 2013 Solheim Cup will take place Aug. 13-18 at Colorado Golf Club in Parker, Colo. The European Team enters the competition holding the Cup and will need 14 points to retain it, with the U.S. Team needing 14½ points to regain the coveted Waterford Crystal prize. The U.S. squad holds an 8-4 lead in the series, which began in 1990, and is undefeated (6-0) on U.S. soil. Malaysia & the Globalization of Golf
Travel
Bukit Jawi Golf Resort By Peter Hellman Divot Contributing Writer
G
olf has become a global economic engine for many countries even as golf in the U.S. is waning. Recent trends in the U.S. show fewer golfers, lower number of rounds played and more courses closing than opening. Viewed in terms of a “product cycle,” golf in the U.S. has reached a mature stage of development – a point when supply exceeds demand for the “product” of golf. What then explains the growth of golf in so many other countries? Here are some reasons: TOURISM: Some governments see golf as attracting wealthy tourists and are, therefore, willing to make investments to develop the industry. LOCAL DEMAND: Local demand is increasing as it did earlier in the U.S. Many countries have a growing middle class and the game has become more democratized. COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE: Lower cost green fees, accommodations, travel and food make golf in developing countries an attractive alternative. PUBLICITY: International tournaments featuring top professional players such as Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy help sponsoring countries promote themselves. REAL ESTATE DEVELOPERS: Building golf courses in order to sell surrounding real estate to a local and international client is booming and helps fuel the industry. There are many examples of this international trend. China’s Mission Hills is certainly an extreme example. With twelve 18-hole courses and loads of hotel rooms, Mission Hills is the largest golf complex in the world. Even Communist Vietnam has embraced bourgeois drivers, pitches and putts. Malaysia is another golf Mecca and has developed a growing and successful golf industry for many of the reasons mentioned above. It is also a country I visited recently. I traveled with my good friend and golf tour associate Neil MacKinnon who was making his second trip. Malaysia occupies a large peninsula
south of Thailand that encompasses Singapore at its southern tip and the northern part of Borneo. Because of its varied topography – jungles, mountains, beaches and islands and the amazingly sophisticated city of Kuala Lumpur, golf in Malaysia has something for every golfer. You can choose from old and exclusive colonial courses (the Brit’s were the first to bring golf to the country), lavish resort courses, private country clubs and internationally ranked courses that attract the best golf professionals. These courses are all available and even the best cost a fraction of what you would pay for a top course in the U.S. or Europe. On my trip, we stayed in Kuala Lumpur, a dramatic city of iconic architecture, global economic influence (finance, palm oil and petroleum) and showing the pains of an accelerated growth path within a traditional society stunned by the rapid changes. Hotels are first class and inexpensive and golf at the nearby courses of Saujana Golf & Country Club and Palm Garden Golf Resort, where I played, are exceptional. From K.L. we flew to George Town on the island of Penang. George Town is an UNESCO World Heritage site and the place where the Brits first established their base in Malaysia in 1783. It was interesting to learn that the first British Governor-General of the area was Charles Cornwallis who surrendered to George Washington to end the Revolutionary War. We stayed in a delightful hotel called the G Hotel and played two excellent courses nearby – Mountain View Golf Resort and Bukit Jawi Golf Resort. From George Town we travel south again to Ipoh to attend the World Amateur Inter-Team Golf Championship or WAITGC at the Royal Perak Golf Club. This three day tournament draws teams from many countries. The teams compete for great prizes, play some terrific courses and have a lot of fun. Qualifying teams receive free airfare, accommodations, golf and several meals. There are multiple opportunities to qualify for the November 2013 event. You may want to put a team together.
Not far from Ipoh is the Banjaran Hot Spring Retreat & Spa. I’m not a spa person. In fact, I usually discount any hotel that over promotes their spa or “leisure center”. After a grueling 18 holes, we golfers are more inclined to seek out the local pub than a masseuse. I must tell you, however, that this place was different. It had a few cottages I would have given my first born to stay in just one night. There was also a gourmet restaurant with a French chef, a bar and wine cellar located in a cave once used as a hideout by Japanese soldiers during WWII and facilities and staff that changed my attitude about this most female of relaxation treatments to one of “I can do this.” There were natural hot pools of various temperatures and a steam room with a heated concrete floor that you lay on to relax your muscles. One of the pools had schools of tiny fish that when offered bare feet, set about nibbling the dead skin off toes, heals and arches. It took a few minutes to get accustom to the tickle, but it sure
beats an emery board. My massage was one to remember. My masseuse was small in stature but her fingers and hands were strong and I am uncertain what she did as she moved muscles and bone, but I felt just a bit taller when she was finished. Back to golf! The final round found us near Kuala Lumpur at The Mines. This spectacular course hosted the 2012 CIMB Classic, which was televised internationally and included the world best golfers. Nick Watney won it with a final round course record 61. Tiger Woods came in tied for 4th. It was a fitting end to a fabulous trip. Though the flight is long, you won’t regret your visit to Malaysia. It’s a special place with much to offer the golfer and nongolfer alike. Story by Classic GOLF Tours. Designing custom golf trips to Scotland, Ireland, Hawaii and virtually everywhere there is golf. The World Amateur Inter-Team Golf Championship (WAITGC) is an annual even organized by Tourism Malaysia. To qualify for the championship, you will need to participate in one of four remaining qualifying tournaments in Malaysia. Qualifying tournaments are May 13-16, June 17-20, September 9-12 or October 7-10. All qualifiers are invited back for the Grand Final November 26-28 and provided with free airfare, accommodations, transfers and daily breakfast, etc.
The cost per team for the qualifying tournament is $2,400 or $600 per person. This fee includes: • Welcome cocktail party • 5-night accommodations - twin sharing • Daily breakfast • 4 rounds of golf with cart • All transfers between airport, hotel & golf courses • Gift packet • Awards dinner (Airfare to Malaysia for the qualifying rounds is at the golfer's expense.)

Counting Down To Its 4 Millionth Lesson
S
ometime this Spring, the world leader in golf instruction will give its four-millionth lesson since opening in 1995 Quite an accomplishment for a company not even 20 years old! As the digital counter in the lobby of GolfTEC’s Denver headquarters clicks closer and closer to the magic number, the company is getting ready to celebrate this milestone event. The first GolfTEC learning center opened on April 10, 1995, in the Denver Tech Center mall. Today, there are 176 centers in the U.S., Canada, Japan, and Korea, with more on the way. GolfTEC employs more than 550 Certified Personal Coaches, most of whom are PGA professionals and apprentices; in fact, nearly 2% of all golf pros in the U.S. work for GolfTEC, which is responsible for 25% of the country’s private golf lessons. While the party planning proceeds, GolfTEC’s first employee—Joe Assell, now CEO and president—likes to reminisce about the early days and what this
24
landmark lesson means. “I couldn’t be more excited about our four millionth lesson,” says Assell. “Every step along the way, every time we open a new center, hire another coach, or help another golfer get better is proof that our idea works.” That idea—which Assell developed with his then boss, Clayton Cole, the legendary past head professional at Denver’s Cherry Hills Country Club—was to bring computers and other technology to golf instruction. That might seem like a no-brainer now, but in the mid-‘90s the world was very different. “This thing called a computer was just becoming available to individual offices, schools, and homes,” remembers Assell. “To get some perspective, 1995 was the first year of two companies called Yahoo and Netscape. Technology wasn’t mainstream, so the idea of bringing golfers indoors and hooking them to a computer was very new. “While the technology has improved beyond belief since those early days, the

Joe Assell
concept is very similar to what we started with back then,” says Assell. “From the day we opened we used body sensors and motion measurement, which remain at the heart of the computerized systems in every GolfTEC center today.” As proud as Assell is of reaching the
4-million lesson mark, he is the first to say that the number of lessons given isn’t nearly as important as their quality. “What keeps every GolfTEC coach and employee motivated and excited is the success of our customers. We’ve had tens of thousands of golfers shoot their career rounds because of us, have tournament victories, win scholarships, club championships, and so much more. “We like the numbers because they continue to validate our original idea of bringing the most up-to-date technology to golf instruction. And we still strive for that every day. But more important than any number is the fact that our customers are really improving. That’s the ultimate validation.” Like everyone at GolfTEC, from the home office to improvement centers around the world, Assell is keeping an eye on the lesson counter. And, definitely already thinking about the next four million. For additional details, call 877-4465383 or visit www.golftec.com. D

Keys To Putting Confidence By Jerry Walters Divot Contributing Writer
G
reat putters have more than a good putting stroke, mechanics and set up. Great putters have confidence, imagination, and experience. Nothing is more important in putting than knowing you can make putts. Everyone believes confidence is the key to great putting, but how do you develop putting confidence? Self-Confidence is a state of mind that says “I can do this.” Confidence must be earned and it doesn’t just happen overnight. Confidence is based on experience such as proper practice. It’s hard to be confident in your putting if you haven’t at least made putts on the practice green. Confidence also comes from making putts, putting practice, and a positive attitude. Henry Ford once said, “whether you think you can or can’t, you’re probably right.”
If you miss a short putt for par, do you call yourself all kinds of names and sprint to buy a new putter?
5. Begin with Success
1. Dues Need to be Paid
2. Alter Your Goal
Confidence comes from practice and knowing that you can do it. That’s why you practice–so you feel confident when it’s time to play. If you practice putting the correct way, you should feel like you earned the right to be confident. Always remember you have “paid the dues” when you start to doubt your putting ability.
How do you judge your success on the greens? Most players have to make putts to feel successful and feel confident they can putt. This is especially true if their main goal is to make putts. It’s better to find a goal that you can control. If your goal is to “make it,” then you must learn to accept that you will miss putts! It’s easier to feel successful when your goal is to hit your line, have good speed, or hit a solid putt. Take solace in knowing that your line was proper and that your stroke was adequate and watch putts begin to fall. Even the best tour players don’t make every putt.
3. Pick Your Terms Can you convince yourself you’re a good putter? If you miss a short putt for par, do you call yourself all kinds of names and sprint to buy a new putter? Your putter’s not the problem, but rather how you talk to yourself that is self-defeating. It’s important to make sure your pep talk is positive and supportive instead of negative and destructive. Before long, you will begin to believe you can’t make putts if you keep telling yourself that you are not a good putter.
4. Practice to Make Putts Practice is important to improving confidence, but it’s how you practice that is critical to transferring your confidence to the course. Don’t just practice to hit putts. Practice with the intention of making
26
putts, just like you would on the golf course. Use your full putting pre-shot routine; read the putt, see a line, and aim your putter just like you do when it matters. This type of practice will help you transfer what you learn to the course faster.
DIVOTMagazine.com l Spring Issue 2013
Improper distance control will result in more three-putts than improper line. Spend a few minutes on the practice green hitting balls from one side to the other without a clear target, just to feel the green speed of the day. Hit uphill as well as downhill putts. Only after feeling comfortable with the speed of the greens would I suggest hitting a series of three foot putts into the cup. Good players use a warm up to get a feel of hitting the ball solidly, to tune-up their touch, and create success pictures in their minds. As part of their warm up before going to the first tee, many pros make a few short putts in a row. This helps them gain confidence by seeing, hearing, and feeling putts fall before going to the first tee. It instills success pictures before that day’s game.
6. Make Good Decisions Every good putter begins his or her stroke with a consistent mental and physical putting routine. A routine should help you (1) lock your mind into execution and nothing else, (2) trust your decisions and stroke, and (3) feel confident before you hit it. Make good decisions in your routine, such as when you read a green, pick a line, aim, and set-up. This should help reduce doubt, gain focus and feed your confidence level. Finally, believe you have what it takes to make putts! Jerry Walters is a putting and short game specialist and teaches at the Trent Wearner Golf Academy at Meridian GC. Fossil Trace Golf Club
I
n July 2013, Fossil Trace Golf Club will be celebrating its 10th Anniversary. After 10 years of success on the Front Range in a supposedly “flat” golf market, what keeps Fossil Trace a mustplay golf experience for golfers in Colorado? In addition to the popularity amongst the local population, Fossil Trace holds the distinction of having entertained guests from all 50 states and 45 countries. We asked Jim Hajek, PGA Head Golf Professional since the course opened in 2003, what makes them such a unique entity. “Fossil Trace is honestly 18 holes of extraordinary and unforgettable golf set in the foothills of the Rockies. Fossil Trace guests are treated to a truly unique golf experience; gorgeous views, unparalleled course conditions, a high level of service and a character-laden golf course designed by architect Jim Engh – the best part, all of this with a mountain course feel only a short trip west of the Mile High City.”
28
Jim can certainly speak to unique and unforgettable golf; as a member of the PGA Ambassador Program, he has visited and played golf at some of the most premier destinations in the world of golf; Scotland, Ireland, Bandon Dunes and Sand Hills to name a few. He, along with the rest of the team at Fossil Trace takes great pride in creating a total golf experience. “Obviously, the historical perspective of the course and property that it is built on keeps us in the conversation for unique golf facilities. Triceratops footprints, as well as other prehistoric creatures’ fossils can be viewed adjacent to the golf course’s 12th green. In addition to the prehistoric relics at Fossil Trace Golf Club, several massive remnants of clay mining equipment can be seen throughout the golf course layout. On the lower fairway of Hole #1, there is an often-photographed incinerator which was used by the adjacent Youth Center in the mid1900’s to burn trash. A root cellar built into the hillside can be viewed near the left side of the fairway. The entire area

Turns was a working farm with cows, hay fields and fruit orchards.” “Like in real estate – a big key to our success is location, location, location. Located in Golden, Colorado - Fossil Trace is nestled adjacent to the foothills of the Rocky Mountain Front Range and in close proximity to other suburban areas including Littleton, Lakewood, Evergreen, Arvada and Boulder. Guests certainly appreciate the short trip to an extraordinary golf experience.” How does Fossil Trace entertain guests other than or in addition to the great golf?
Jim says, “Fossil Trace and Three Tomatoes Steakhouse and Club are the perfect spot for breakfast, lunch, dinner or even Sunday brunch. The newly enhanced dining room provides the perfect setting for a memorable dining experience with family, foursome or business associates. I often take the opportunity to

enjoy a steak and a glass of wine on the patio overlooking the Front Range. Guests shouldn’t forget about our Happy Hour from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. daily – handmade appetizers and drink specials make for a great follow-up to any round of golf, good or bad. There is something for every palate, but an ice cold beer on the patio after golf sounds just about perfect.” “Not only are we dedicated to the enjoyment of our guests by providing a memorable golf experience, we are dedicated to the advancement of your game by offering complimentary fittings and expertise in personalized golf clubs; including woods, irons and hybrids using fitting systems from Titleist, PING, Callaway, Cobra, Nike and Mizuno. that your clubs have been personalized for your game. If you purchase equipment from Fossil Trace Golf Club, you receive a complimentary range pass and in some cases, rounds of golf. We also match prices with our local golf retailers.” We asked Jim some of the more frequently asked questions in his tenure at Fossil Trace. Here’s what he had to say in addition to some other lesser known stories and facts about Fossil Trace.
“After suffering through one of the worst droughts in history in 2002, Fossil Trace encountered a 50 year flood from a downpour just 48 hours prior to opening day. The turf care crew worked around the clock for 2 days to allow the course to open on time and in pristine condition.” “The facility has been completely selfsufficient, paying its own way in every way including debt service as well as all City Services. No tax dollars have been used at Fossil Trace since opening.” “Original thoughts for the course surrounded selecting a “golf management company” to open the course and manage it for the first few years. This idea was squashed by the Parks Board, led by former PGA Professional Steve Gragg who insisted on hiring a PGA Professional to open and manage the property.”
rounds, we been able to determine the exact pace for each hole, creating the best pace of play offered by the course design. Not only do we have the information, but our staff is well trained in pace of play management. It’s important to note that we will do what it takes to ensure our entire group of players on any given day is given the opportunity to play at a friendly pace.”
www.fossiltrace.com. Online tee times are available to better serve Fossil Trace guests and provide the ability to make tee-times 24 hours a day. There is also an app for smart phones that allows for speedy online tee time reservations.
“Although the success of Fossil Trace does not include any sort of memberships, we are offering multiple ways to keep loyal guests connected with up-to-date information and course specials. The lowest advertised green fees will always be featured through Fossil Trace Golf Club.”

After a long winter, the touch and feel part of your game, your short game, probably needs some attention. Spend some time at the range working on hitting some wedges. Hit some half, three-quarter and full wedge shots focusing on your tempo and how far the ball travels. Go to the short game area and hit chips of different lengths and some short, medium and long putts. Hitting the ball the correct distance is the key to lower scores. While playing your first few rounds of the year, keep track of your stats. Record fairways and greens in regulation, your up and down percentage, total putts including three putts and anything else you want to keep track of. After a few rounds, review your stats to see what areas of your game need more attention then focus your practice on those parts of your game. I believe you should spend more time practicing the two worst parts of your game to make them better.

pring is here and it's time to start getting your game ready for the golf season. Here are a few ideas to help make this season your best yet. A good place to start is to focus on your fundamentals. A quick check of your grip, posture and ball position would be a good idea. All great players have a good grip. Although there is not one perfect grip for all players, your perfect grip will put your hands in a position to control the clubface and create leverage and speed. Check your posture and setup position in a mirror. You should be in a balanced an athletic position, ready to move. All setup errors lead to swing errors. Make sure your setup position is ready for the season. And while you are there, check your ball position. Ball position errors can cause you to have poor contact and can create direction problems.

Establish some goals for the year. Determine what you would like to accomplish this year, breakdown the goals into smaller steps then plan your practice time accordingly. If you would like to eliminate three putts and get your chips closer to the hole, plan to spend more time working on distance control in putting and chipping. If you have two hours per week to work on your game, spend 40 minutes on putting, 40 minutes on chipping and 40 minutes on another part of your game such as full swing. Spring is a great time to take a lesson. Your coach can help you to identify areas that need work and can also help you to design a personalized practice plan. Don't have a coach? Do your homework first. Find an instructor whose methods will be a good fit for you. Spring is also a good time to take a look at your equipment. Replace worn or slick grips. If the grooves on your wedges are worn, consider purchasing new wedges as worn grooves will effect your distance control. Many of the golf companies have released their new equipment for the year. If you are considering purchasing new clubs, make sure and get professionally fir for your new clubs. Errors in club specifications cause ball flight errors creating the need for swing compensations. Having a driver fit for the proper launch angle and spin will give you your maximum distance. ee Tidwell, owner of Championship Golf Fitness, has decided to take golf fitness to the “next level,” by creating Colorado’s first, “Golf Fitness Club.” Tidwell offered, “My desire to change to Colorado Golf Fitness Club comes from the fact that most of my present members have dramatically changed. We are offering our members the benefits of a Golf Club and the results of a Fitness Club. On average some of the benefits club members have experienced are: 1. Loosing 20-30 pounds 2. Hitting the ball 20-50 yards farther 3. Dropped 3-8 strokes off their handicaps 4. Scoring significantly better 5. Becoming more consistent players 6. Playing without back, shoulder or elbow pain” “We’ve brought the PGA player experience to the amateur and elite players of Colorado”, said Dee. “Every weekend amateur golfers hear about and watch how golf fitness directly benefits the guys and gals who play professionally, and we can help dramatically help Colorado am-
ateurs play their best golf too!” Tidwell has worked with high handicap golfers, the CU Mens Golf Team, and PGA tour winners, and is TPI (Titleist Performance Institute) certified, as well as a Muscle Activation Technique specialist. The Colorado Golf Fitness Club is focused on player improvement by identifying each member’s weaknesses and providing specific stretching and golf fitness programs designed to strengthen, stabilize, and create more power for every golfer. Other services include nutrition, muscle therapy, seminars, on site programs and gym consultation. Every member enjoys benefits like; workout towel service, a post workout snack, discounts with partners of CGFC (club fitting, mental training, chiropractors, physical therapists, 3D motion capture and nutrition). “Our goal is to not only help our members play to their best ability, but to be in the best shape of their lives,” said Tidwell, “And it’s working.” For more information regarding the Colorado Golf Fitness Club, contact Dee Tidwell at deetidwell@gmail.com or 303883-0435 D

Putting... Get Serious! By Scotty Hofer Divot Contributing Writer

rive for show and putt for dough.” Most golfers have heard this expression. Don’t get me wrong. Driving the ball long and straight is important, especially in today’s game, but it is not the most important. Putting is! Whether you shoot 70 or 120, approximately 40% are putts. What separates poor putters from good (30 - 32 putts per round) and great putters (28 or less putts per round)? There are five areas that good and great putters excel in: • Distance Control (or Speed) • Direction Control • Pre-putt Routine • How to Practice • Reading Greens I have teamed up with Eyeline Golf to present a 5 session putting program that will get you to excel in the first four areas. Attending an AimPoint Green Reading clinic will teach you how to excel in reading greens. Eyeline Golf, a local company that provides excellent training aids, especially for putting, has produced a dynamic practice system called “4 Putting Elements”. This system focuses on your setup, path, impact, and speed. There is science behind the 4 Putting Elements system. In recent years there have been several studies regarding the amazing accomplishments of athletes and musicians who have used “deep practice” in their training. The following principles are simple to execute if the plan is created properly: Chunking – break your skill into small parts and practice until you master them. Add more “chunks” until the entire skill is mastered. Repetition – it takes thousands of repetitions to create a skill. Concentration – to create a new neuro pathway, we must be concentrating when we practice. Mindless repetition does not build skill. Novelty – we enjoy “new” things. They get and keep our attention until they are no longer “new”. Coaching and Feedback – we need to immediately know if we are doing the skill correctly or incorrectly so we can make changes. 4 Putting Elements was built around
The AimPoint® Green Reading Method currently used by top 100 instructors, PGA and LPGA Tour pros (Stacey Lewis - 2012 LPGA Player of the Year) and caddies is the most effective way to read greens ever developed and teaches exactly why and how a putt breaks. Never guess at the direction or amount of break again.
these principles. The putting stroke has been “chunked” into four putting elements (setup, path, impact, speed). Many games and drills have been created for each element that are “novel”. They prevent boredom and make it easier to concentrate. Feedback tools to let you know if you are doing the motion correctly or incorrectly are present. A way to track your progress and stay motivated is also provided. Attend one of these “4 Elements Putting” programs at MetaGolf Learning Center located at Broken Tee Englewood GC and you can move from a poor to good or good to great putter. These programs will consist of 5 one hour sessions over five consecutive weeks. Cost is $199. Fridays, 5:30 – 6:30 pm, April 5 – May 3 and May 10 – June 7. Additional dates to be added for remainder of season. AimPoint is a putt predictive technology that was developed by Mark Sweeney and was the “blue line” overlayed on the greens on the Thursday and Friday broadcasts of the PGA Tour events on The Golf Channel in 2012.
