Three Hall of Famers Filed Entries for U.S. Senior Open Fred Couples, Bernhard Langer and Vijay Singh, have all filed entries as fully exempt players for the 39th U.S. Senior Open Championship. Each World Golf Hall of Famer will compete in the U.S. Senior Open at The Broadmoor Golf Club’s East Course, in Colorado Springs, Colo., June 28-July 1. Couples, 58, has played in four U.S. Senior Opens. He was the runner-up in 2010 at Sahalee Country Club, in Sammamish, Wash. and tied for fourth last year at Salem Country Club, in Peabody, Mass. Langer, 60, won the 2010 U.S. Senior Open by three strokes over Couples and was the runner-up in 2012 at Indianwood Golf and Country Club, in Lake Orion, Mich. Langer has recorded six top-10 finishes in the 10 Senior Opens he has competed. Singh, 55, tied for seventh last year in his third U.S. Senior Open appearance. His best finish came in 2014 when he tied for fifth at Oak Tree National, in Edmond, Okla. Online entry applications for the Senior Open began on March 7 and continue through Wednesday, May 16, at 5 p.m. EDT (www.usga.org/champs/apply). To be eligible, a player must be age 50 or
older at the start of the championship and have a Handicap Index® not exceeding 3.4, or be a professional. More information about the 39th U.S.

39th U.S. Senior Open Championship At The Broadmoor Seeks Junior Volunteers Junior volunteers are needed to fill an exciting role during the upcoming 2018 U.S. Senior Open Championship, conducted by the United States Golf Association (USGA), will be played at The Broadmoor, from June 25-July 1. Junior volunteers, ages 13-17, interested in this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be inside the ropes with the best golfers in the world are encouraged to apply. More than 100 junior volunteers are needed to act as standard bearers, which involves carrying a two-sided scoring sign and posting scores for a group of golfers. Junior volunteers are required to walk the course and should have a comfortable knowledge of the sport. All junior volunteers will receive one credential good for grounds access all seven days of the championship. Additionally, volunteers will receive one championship water bottle, complimentary admission to the Championship Kickoff Party, complimentary food and

beverage on working days and a uniform consisting of a logoed polo shirt and hat or visor. Junior volunteers are asked to work a minimum of four, four-hour shifts over the course of the seven-day championship. All juniors must be 13 years of age by June 25, 2018. Davis Love III Files Entry to Compete in His First U.S. Senior Open Championship Davis Love III, who was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame last year and served as USA Ryder Cup captain in 2012 and 2016, has filed an entry as a fully exempt player for the 39th U.S. Senior Open Championship. He will compete in his first Senior Open at The Broadmoor Golf Club’s East Course, in Colorado Springs, Colo., June 28July 1, 2018. Love, who will turn 54 on April 13, has had a storied career. He won the 1997 PGA Championship, held at five-time U.S. Open host site Winged Foot Golf Club, in Mamaroneck, N.Y., and captured two Players Championships, in 1992 and 2003. He has recorded 21 PGA Tour victories, including the 2015 Wyndham Championship, which at age 51 made him the third-oldest winner in Tour history behind Sam Snead and Art Wall Jr. “I’m really happy that my first U.S. Senior Open will be at The Broadmoor, one of America’s historic resorts,” said Love, who is fully recovered from hip-replacement surgery last November. “Colorado has been a special place for my family. I won two PGA Tour tournaments at Castle Pines and my father captured two junior match-play tournaments on the state level here in the 1950s. Having competed in more than 20 U.S. Opens, I know that I’ll have the same type of challenges at the Senior Open because of the course and the world-class field. I’ll have to use all my skills to pass this ultimate test, but I am ready for it.” Love has competed in 23 U.S. Opens and was the runner-up to Steve Jones in 1996 at Oakland Hills Country Club, in Bloomfield Hills, Mich. He posted 10 top-25 finishes, which also included a tie for fourth in 1995 at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, the site of this year’s U.S. Open. He also excelled in team competition. Love played on the victorious 1985 USA Walker Cup Team, and also competed in six Ryder Cups and six Presidents Cups. D

John Elway Files Entry for 2018 U.S. Senior Open Championship John Elway, who has led the Denver Broncos to Super Bowl victories as both a player and a general manager, has filed an entry for the 39th U.S. Senior Open Championship, which will be contested at The Broadmoor Golf Club’s East Course, in Colorado Springs, Colo., June 28-July 1, 2018. To be eligible, a player must be age 50 or older at the start of the championship

Elway, who was named honorary chairman of the 2018 U.S. Senior Open in November 2016, is in his seventh year as the Broncos’ executive vice president of football operations/general manager. His Hall-of-Fame playing career with the Broncos included five Super Bowl appearances and back-to-
back victories in 1997-98. Elway became the first starting quarterback for a Super Bowl champion to also win as a general manager when the Broncos defeated the Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl 50. 3 Turns to Curb Your Slice By Nathan Morris, PGA DIVOT Contributing Writer

Over the last 10 years and 18,000 lessons with GOLFTEC, I have learned that there are a few things that you have to do every time to get rid of that slice forever. There are three key moves that will set you up for success. Do these and TURN that slice into the perfect draw!
1 – TURN your grip. I see tons of students walk into my door with a grip that
of the ball position and the fact that most golfers turn their chests toward the target when they look at it, most golfers set up with open shoulders. This is when your shoulder line points well left of your target for a right-handed golfer. This promotes an OUT to IN, or over the top swing path. This is exactly what we don’t want. Instead, LEAVE YOUR FEET SQUARE to the target and corkscrew your shoulders closed so that your shoulder line points a little right of the target. This will promote that INSIDE swing path that we all need to stop the slice. 3 – TURN your hips in the backswing. This one has been debated over the years so stick with me on this one. Allowing your
sets them up for failure. By turning your grip towards your trail shoulder, you give the club face a chance to be closed relative to the swing path. To do this, lay the club face down square on the ground. Rotate your hands over towards your trail shoulder until the creases between your thumbs and index fingers BOTH point at your trail shoulder.

2 – TURN your shoulders. Because hips to turn A LOT in the backswing is the only way that we can create a full shoulder turn and get our hands far enough behind us to swing IN to OUT. If you have ever been told to keep your lower body stable or quiet in the backswing you will have a hard time creating the proper upper body position unless you are built like Gumby. Us mere mortals have to let the hips turn because we aren’t that flexible. If you follow all three of these turns, that slice will TURN in to a draw in no time. Golf is an inside job... Golf is one the most challenging mental sports ever played. We spend countless hours on the range practicing all the mechanics, shaping shots, chipping, pitching, putting and more. Practice is a necessity to getting better. However, we forget one of the most important parts of becoming a great player is the mental side, the inside job. As an instructor for over 12 years and a player for over 40 I can’t stress enough how important practicing the mental side is. During a recent yoga class one of my favorite teachers talked about how the practice of yoga is an inside job. One that we don’t take enough time to look at more closely. Yoga is a physical practice and we often lose sight of the inner job of yoga. What our thoughts are when we are in a pose. How we compare ourselves to others in a class or our unrealistic expectations we put on ourselves when we step on to our mats. How about when we step on to the golf course? How often have you experienced stress, fear, and/or anxiety during a round? You know the feeling, heart palpitations, increased breathing, boost of energy and

overall heightened senses. This is the result of an adrenaline rush. The adrenaline rush can and will change the timing of your swing. I can recall many times during a round when I felt this way. My heart rate is the first physical sign for me. It feels like it
is jumping out of my chest. One thing I have learned, with the practice of yoga, is to check in with my thoughts and make a conscious effort to take deep slow breaths. This in turn slows the rush down! Our brain controls everything. If our

thoughts are scattered, negative, and anxious our bodies follow suit. I can think of many times, when I first started teaching golf, how nervous I became when I would play with my students. My inner dialogue went something like this; “what if I miss a shot, what if I embarrass myself, what if I can’t perform under pressure” the list goes on. I still go there sometimes but have made a “conscious” effort to shift my inner dialogue which is now part of my mental practice. Estes Park 18-Hole Golf Course to Celebrate Its 100th
Estes Valley Recreation and Park District (EVRPD), the provider of numerous recreational opportunities in Estes Valley, is excited to launch its 100th season of golf at the Estes Park 18-Hole Golf Course. Opening day will be Saturday, April 14, 2018 with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 7:30 a.m. and the first tee off at 8:30 a.m. Tee-times can be booked by calling the Estes Park 18-Hole Golf Course at 970-586-8146. In honor of the celebration, all green fees on opening day will be $19.18. A beer— Centennial Smash—was brewed by Lumpy Ridge Brewing to commemorate the 100th season, which will be available all season long at the course clubhouse. On November 10, 1917, The Estes Park Golf and Country Club filed articles of incorporation. Some of Estes Park’s most notable men of the time served on the Board of Directors—H.P. James, H.E. James, E.J. Mills, Ed B. Andrews, J. E. McDonald, Samuel Service and Julian Hayden. Over the next few months by-laws were written, 250 stock shares were issued with a value of $25,000, and three members— Howard James, Homer James and Ed Andrews—were appointed to build the course. The first design was an 18-hole course set against Fish Creek, where a former course financed by Lord Dunraven once stood and a clubhouse used by that course was built in 1909. (That clubhouse is the same one on the 18-hole course today that is home to Smokin’ Dave’s BBQ at the Hangar Restaurant and the golf course pro-shop.) H.E. James was appointed the first golf operator. The three men worked hard through the winter and spring, and the course opened for the first round of play on July 4, 1918. Since that time, the course has seen a variety of changes, updates and even changed ownership. Due to the financial crisis happening in the U.S. in the 1930s, the 18-hole course was converted to a 9-hole course and an airstrip was built on the western edge of the course with hopes to improve sagging tourism in the area. The airport did very little to promote travel to Estes Park and was a dangerous location that resulted in several bad crashes. It
closed in the late 1940s. Finances at the course continued to stumble along and on July 6, 1944, a two-thirds majority of the stockholders voted to turn The Estes Park Golf and Country Club over to the Town of Estes Park. In March 1957, the Town of Estes Park signed a long-term lease agreement with the recreation district, then called the Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Recreation District. The recreation district soon thereafter started the process of obtaining funding to transform the 9-hole course from one with buffalo grass fairways, sand greens and prairie for rough back into an 18-hole course with grass fairways, a watering system and locker rooms with showers. Henry Hughes, a golf course architect from Denver who designed and built more than 40 golf courses in Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Nebraska and Texas during his career, was hired to transform the Estes Park Golf and Country Club. The remodeled course opened on July 5, 1960 as the Estes Park Municipal Golf Course, which has evolved into being called the Estes Park 18-Hole Golf Course. A centennial golf tournament is planned for July 4, 2018, where breaking out the knickers and hickory golf clubs will make for fun photo opportunities. Specials and promotions will also be available all summer long to commemorate the 100-year theme. Season passes are also still available for the centennial season, and the preseason bonus is available if purchased by April 16. 2018 Denver Golf Expo Draws Enthusiastic Crowds Despite Snow and Freezing Temps
February snow and cold only fueled the vision of lush fairways and sunny days for attendees at this year’s Denver Golf Expo. Held Feb. 9-11 at the Denver Merchandise Mart, close to 9,000 golf fans braved the wintry weather to try out new clubs and gear, participate in contests and enter to win 150 giveaways over the course of the show, including stay-and-play vacations, golf clubs, plus apparel and gear. This year’s grand prize was a dream trip to Oregon’s Bandon Dunes Golf Resort. “Bandon Dunes is more than a resort—it’s a ‘bucket list’ trip,” says show president Mark Cramer. “It’s a golf experience that takes you a golfer’s paradise, a wonderful opportunity for links golf right along the Pacific Ocean. It comes close to golf in Scotland.” Golf expo attendees can complete a survey that not only gives them an entry for giveaways, but helps Cramer and company keep the show fresh and enticing from year to year. Why do people keep coming back? Cramer says, “From our survey, we know that 43 percent buy
golf merchandise, 23 percent try out new-model clubs and 19 percent come to win prizes.” Attendees could also compete for prizes at daily putting contests, and improve their game with onsite mini-lessons. While that pesky snow and cold dipped into attendance numbers, everyone who made it to the Mart was treated to expected quality exhibits and activities, plus 20 new vendors among 180 booths. “We had good feedback that exhibitors broke records from the year before,” says Cramer. “If not for that Northern freeze that descended on us on Saturday, we would have been over last year’s numbers.” Major expo sponsors and supporters include: Lenny’s Golf, Colorado Golf Association (CGA), Junior Golf Alliance of Colorado, the Colorado Section PGA and Divot Magazine. Grand Classic a True Mountain Course Tournament
With spring weather right around the corner it’s time to think about golf in the beautiful, Colorado high country. 2018 marks the 19th year for the Annual Grand Classic Golf Tournament. This tournament is a two-day event showcasing two extraordinary Grand County courses: Pole Creek Golf Club and Golf Granby Ranch. Ranked in the top 50 Best National Public Golf Courses, Pole Creek was named Best Après Course in 2014, and Best Mountain Course in 2017, by Colorado Avid Golfer Maga-
zine’s Caggy Awards. Golf Granby Ranch is tucked into a secluded rocky mountain valley with breathtaking views of the Continental Divide, and is ranked as one of the Best Mountain Courses in Colorado. This year’s event will be held Friday and Saturday, June 15th & 16th, 2018. Friday’s events include day one of tournament play with golfers split amongst the two courses, followed by dinner, a silent auction and live music at the Base Lodge at Granby Ranch. Saturday’s activities include day two of
tournament play (golfers switch courses from the previous day), followed by a putting contest, cocktail party and awards ceremony at Pole Creek Golf Club. Grand Elk opens 2018 season with new General Manager Larry Burks
