Better iron contact equals a better golf game By GOLFTEC
If you want to hit more greens, create better iron contact by understanding how your hips move in the golf swing Picture this: You just hit a perfect baby draw off the tee. The ball lands in the middle of the short stuff, 150 yards from the green. The hole location is dead-center, so you have plenty of room for error with your approach. That leaves a stock iron shot which should be textbook, right?
Maybe for someone else. You, instead, have sweaty palms just thinking about failing to make solid contact, because history has proven the case more often than not. So, upon a timid, unconfident attempt, your result is a chunked shot that leaves a challenging up-and-down to save par. Sorry to rattle your cage if that hit too close to home, but unfortunately discomfort over “routine” iron shots is all too common for many golfers. That’s why we’re here with advice to make those wasted opportunities a thing of the past!
Hip sway — the lateral movement of your hips — determines where the bottom of your swing arc, or “low point,” occurs. As we learned in our big-data study of the golf swing, hip sway is a major differentiator of skill level. Ultimately, hip sway influences contact. So, it represents the difference between solid, ball-fist shots and fatted or thinned shots. High-handicap golfers who have always been told to “shift their weight to the trail leg” tend to sway their hips farther away from the target than better golfers, which often results in low-point consistency issues. Hip sway this way...
Our simple solution? Make an adjustment at address and maintain that change throughout the swing. When you set up to the ball, move your hips toward the target so your belt buckle is vertically over your lead heel. As you begin to swing back, rotate around your belt buckle, while trying to keep your hips centered over the same area instead of swaying back toward the trail leg. To accomplish this, your lead knee will flex while your trail knee straightens.

like expanses of sand…in sum, a little bit of everything that Cabo has to offer. The drive to the fifth hole, which traces a switchback route up the side of a mountain, climbs to a vertigo-inducing tee perched 275 feet above the foaming surf. At under 300 yards from the forward tees, this downhill par 4 can be driven, but it’s ‘hasta la vista’ if you miss the rock-walled, cliff-
hanging green. The par-3 sixth, its concave green carved from the base of huge stippled dune, is equally dramatic. After swinging near an historic lighthouse, the layout weaves through the dunes and returns to the cliffs at No. 13, a tiny par 3 that plays over a yawning abyss to a miniscule green set atop a pinnacle of fissured granite rising 100 feet from the surf.
Eagle Ranch Golf Club is located in the beautiful small town of Eagle, Colorado, just 30 minutes from Vail. The majestic Colorado Rocky Mountains provide a spectacular setting for this Arnold Palmer Signature Design Course. The course opened in 2001 as part of a new, master-planned residential community called Eagle Ranch. With the addition of the golf course and other fantastic amenities such as an outdoor pool, ice rink, recreation trails and fitness center, Eagle is an idyllic place to live and play. Even with the proximity to world-class ski areas, Eagle is known for its “hole in the sky”, meaning we enjoy a long golf season from late March to early November. 10

The course then proceeds inland through the desert, dropping abruptly from a set of elevated tees at Nos. 16 and 17, each a magnificent par 4. The par-4 18th hole, a linksstyle creation, plays to an infinity-edge green that appears to float on the ocean. A note to first-timers: Quivira is a breathtaking layout, but it can be visually intimidating. Nicklaus, to his credit, built kicker slopes and containment mounds that tend to gather the ball to safety and feed the ball to the hole. Because of the setting, each risk-reward scenario must be weighed very carefully on this off-the-charts design. When in doubt, the conservative route and the high-percentage shot are usually the best options. Completing the experience at Quivira is a thatched-roof, beachfront clubhouse that offers a large rectangular bar, a casual steakhouse and ample outdoor seating overlooking the surging sea and Land’s End. How it All Began:

The City of Greeley’s first municipal golf course, Highland Hills, was purchased in 1960 from a local real estate agent Roy Lundvall. The total purchase price was $160,000. The course was purchased as a nine hole with the option to add nine more holes and a clubhouse at a later date. The first ever tee time booked on the city owned golf course was on July 3, 1961, for $1.50. In 1970, an additional 9 holes were added to the east side and a clubhouse was built turning it into the golf course we all know and love. The municipal golf course is a championship par 71 parkland style eighteen hole course. Over 1,300 trees and undulating terrain, gives every golfer an enjoyable and exciting experience regardless of the playing ability. Boomerang Links Golf Course was the second course added to Greeley in 1991. The city first realized a need for another golf course in the late 1970’s. Highland Hills was regularly hitting capacity for six years prior to the opening on Boomerang with yearly rounds topping 60,000. The planning began in 1988 with several sites considered for the new golf course and eventually the 237 acre lot on 4th St. and
71st Ave. was picked. The land was acquired from Luverne and Lawrence Hertzke and Elmer Rothe. Land was also donated by Hewlett Packard, Greeley Tech Center and Wheeler Management. William Neff of Neff Alliance was the person responsible for designing the new course. Boomerang Links hosted a kick-off tournament in earl July of 1991 and over 130 players turned out to play on the course for the first time. The officially opening date of Boomerang Links Golf course was on August 1, 1991. Boomerang Links is a championship par 72 eighteen hole links style course with over 50 bunkers. Fore Melina Golf Tournament at Glenmoor Country Club June 3rd How would you like to play a round of golf at one of the most exclusive, picturesque, invitation-only courses in Denver and have your green fee, along with the proceeds from all other purchases be used for philanthropic purposes? Well now you can! The course is Glenmoor Country Club. The date is June 3rd. The opportunity is rare. The cause is the Melina Wachter Memorial Foundation. Melina entered this world already sick, but nobody knew it. The first few months of her life were like any other baby’s: feedings, diapers, smiles, finding her toes, and being wholly adored by her older toddler sister and two loving parents. Then at 3 months old, a fever and lethargy led to tests and the very worst diagnosis: Infant Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, blood cancer. Melina, the doctors, and her parents fought with everything they had for 7 long, intense months that included chemo, radiation, bone marrow transplant, and a ventilator. She lost her very valiant battle just before she was even 10 months old. That was 15 years ago on the Gregorian calendar. It was just yesterday for her parents. They lost a vital part of themselves the day Baby Melina gained her angel wings.
They also refused to give in to grief. Six years later, in 2010, they started the Melina Wachter Memorial Foundation in Melina’s honor. Over the last 12 years they have hosted a golf tournament in order to raise money. This year is no different, with the 13th Annual Fore Melina Golf Tournament - did we mention Glenmoor? All the money raised helps support local children currently undergoing treatment for cancer. Desiree’ and Mike Wachter have become a mainstay on the childhood cancer circuit. They routinely re-stock the Comfy Cupboard, on the 7th floor at Children’s Hospital. They send monetary gifts to families in need. They sit and hold the hands of scared
parents. They also put on one helluva golf tournament! Desiree’, mom to Melina and the cheerful, driving force behind the tournament, spends 6 months of the year getting ready for this main event. This is one of the most fun, most impactful tournaments you can be a part of. There are Sponsorship opportunities. There is a silent auction (someone we won’t name spent a month dining at some of Denver’s best restaurants). There are mulligans for sale. Your donation on a par 5 hole will be shot by a pro and all the money goes to the tournament’s Cancer Champion. The Cancer Champion was started 9 years ago after a neighbor boy was
diagnosed with a brain tumor. Since then, a child fighting cancer is chosen and really brings a face of childhood cancer to the tournament. Last year, Taylor, the world’s cutest 1 1/2 year old and her family, were gifted $5000, all because of people like YOU who love to golf and who make Our Colorado a better place to live. Golf your way through South Suburban Parks and Recreation South Suburban Parks and Recreation offers four diverse public golf courses for all abilities, including the challenging, 18hole championship Lone Tree Golf Course; the regulation 18-hole South Suburban Golf Course, and adjacent 9-hole, par-3 golf course; the executive, 18-hole Littleton Golf Course; and the 9-hole executive Family Sports Golf Course. Each course has its own personality and unique features.
Lone Tree Golf Course in Lone Tree
The 18-hole, Arnold Palmer-designed par-72 championship course features rolling fairways and greens and offers players incredible views of Denver and the Front Range. With five sets of tees, players can choose tee boxes to match their handicap. New this season, check out hole #6’s new tee area and the redesign of a greenside bunker. Lone Tree offers great practice facilities with a grass tee driving range, large putting green and a short game area consisting of two chipping greens and three bunkers. Improved lighting, new table umbrellas, seat cushions and fire pits all contribute to the patio’s inviting ambiance. Enjoy complimentary live music on the patio on Fridays, 6-9 p.m., and Sundays 4-7 p.m. This fall, we plan to renovate the pro shop to better serve our patrons. Ask about our full-service tournament

South Suburban Golf Course in Centennial
Play a round against a picturesque mountain backdrop at this regional favorite! South Suburban is a superbly maintained, 18-hole regulation course, with a suburban vibe and setting. A new chipping green and practice bunkers will open midsummer; and a new putting green will open by late fall. Littleton Golf Course in Littleton
The par-63 executive, 18-hole course is
a great choice if you’re looking to play a round on a naturally beautiful course. The title may say executive, but the challenge of the course is anything but that. Littleton Golf Course features two par-5s, four par4s, a grass driving range and a practice putting green. Check out the club’s brand new renovated main entrance, with new landscaping and tables, and a new cart staging area. Littleton Golf Course is located adjacent to the South Platte River and the Mary Carter Greenway Trail. After your game, unwind at the Centennial Grill, and peruse the merchandise at the golf and tennis pro shop.
Family Sports Golf Course in Centennial
Family Sports Golf Course features the metro’s only heated and lighted double deck driving range, open year-round, late at night! Golfers will enjoy the increased warmth of new infrared heaters while hitting range balls on cold days or nights. There’s also a new range ball machine. Adjacent to the driving range is an award-winning short game practice area featuring two large practice greens, two bunkers and the ability to hit up to 75 yard-long pitch shots. We also installed a new safety net along the driving range to help protect players on the practice putting green and hole #1. The 9-hole, par-31, executive golf course
is perfect for those short on time, or those wanting to practice their short game. In addition to South Suburban’s PGA teaching staff, GOLFTEC provides individual outdoor lessons to every level of player, from beginner to the serious, competitive golfer, onsite at Family Sports Golf Range. After a round, or a bucket of balls, stop by the Avalanche Grill for a drink or bite to eat. The grill’s outdoor patio offers beautiful views of the mountains and is a great spot to watch the planes take off and land from Centennial Airport. Tournament format at both courses will be a two-person best ball of foursome. Since 1996, the Grand Foundation has granted over $10.1 Million to over 160 Grand County charitable and service club organizations. These organizations provide programs and/or services in the areas of Health & Human Services, Arts & Culture, Education, Amateur Sports and the Environment. The Fraser Valley Metropolitan Recreation District provides memorable recreational activities and facilities that promote health and wellness for the Fraser Valley. As an LPGA instructor since 2005 and player for over 35 years, I have seen many articles on instruction, equipment, quick fixes, tips, tricks and more. What is the key to becoming a better player? I decided to do some research on the top teaching articles of 2018 and what I found was interesting.

Let’s face it, to be a solid player it takes a lot of time and effort. It seems as though we don’t have the time we did 20 years ago, or we choose not to invest it into our practice. We will read “tips and tricks” in a book or golf magazine, go out and try it, feel as though it is the magic bullet, but cannot sustain it. In addition, buying new equipment, drivers, wedges or even a whole bag of new clubs. All these things may help temporarily, but then we fall back into old

habits, so no what? What tends to get overlooked or often times completely dismissed, is continuing to fine tune basic fundamentals. You know the boring stuff, grip, stance, posture, aim/alignment etc. Fundamental principles are incredibly important because without them, chances are, you will not continue to progress. Why, because without fundamental principles, it is difficult to maintain a solid, repeatable golf swing. If you cannot set up properly over a golf ball before you pull the trigger, you don’t stand a chance. For example, if you have an improper grip, aligned in the wrong direction or you are too close to the ball, you will not produce a good golf shot. Fundamental principles are the static components of your golf swing, another way to think about this is pre-shot routine. Meaning all the things that you need to have in place prior to executing the actual physical swing. One reason, fundamentals may get lost during a round, is because players often feel rushed and therefore don’t make them a priority. Instead, the mindset is step up and swing at it and move on to the next hole. If you don’t take the time to incorporate solid fundamentals, you

are less likely to hit a good golf shot, which in turn will slow down play. Another important part of fundamental principles is having an understanding of basic swing faults and misses. Often when we miss a shot, we have no idea why. A pull hook for example, generally occurs because the hands are ahead of the body at impact. This may happen when a player becomes tired, fatigued or in a hurry. There are many ways to miss a shot, but more importantly if we have an understanding of why it occurs, at a foundational level, it may be easier to correct during a round. Success is neither magical nor mysterious in all areas of life. It is the natural consequence of consistently applying the basic fundamentals. The weather set up perfectly for the 2019 Denver Golf Expo to attract it’s largest crowd since 2012. There was snow on most of the courses in Colorado and the temperature was too cold for anyone other than full blooded Scotchmen to even consider playing a round. Held Feb. 8-10 at the Denver Merchandise Mart, close to 10,000 golf fans experienced the indoor golf experience of the year and tried out new clubs and gear, participated in contests and entered to win 150 giveaways over the course of the show, including stay-and-play vacations, golf clubs, plus apparel and gear. This year’s grand prize was a dream trip to Oregon’s Bandon Dunes Golf Resort. “Bandon Dunes is more than a resort— it’s a ‘bucket list’ trip,” says show president Mark Cramer. “It’s a golf experience that takes you to a golfer’s paradise, a wonderful opportunity for links golf right along the Pacific Ocean. It comes close to golf in Scotland. It is a laid back golf experience with a great staff of friendly, real people that provide just the right degree of Oregon hospitality without the stuffiness of some high brow locations. Bandon Dunes has quickly become the number one golf resort in the United States because of the great golf (4 courses, great practice area, a par 3 courses and an 18 hole putting complex),
it’s people, and providing an immersive golf experience for real golfers, will be remember for a lifetime for those that make the trek.” Golf Expo attendees can complete a survey that not only gives them an entry for giveaways, but helps Cramer and company keep the show fresh and enticing from year to year. Why do people keep coming back? Cramer says, “From our survey, we know that 43 percent buy golf merchandise, 23 percent try out new-model clubs and 19 percent come to win prizes.” Attendees could also compete for prizes at daily putting contests, and improve their game with onsite minilessons and seminars. This year the Expo added more food and beverage choices, more lounge areas and next year will be adding musical entertainment. The idea is to create more of a festival atmosphere to enhance the golf experience being provided. Major expo sponsors and supporters include: Lenny’s Golf, Colorado Golf Association (CGA), Junior Golf Alliance of Colorado, the Colorado Section PGA, Corona Premier and DIVOT Magazine. TPC Colorado is the state’s first ground-up golf course development in nearly 10 years
TPC Colorado is located on Highway 287 in Berthoud, just north of Longmont and south of Loveland. Situated along the banks of Lonetree, McNeil and Welch Reservoirs and featuring majestic views of the Rocky Mountains, the 800-acre golf community opened in the Spring of 2018. TPC Colorado encompasses a master-planned residential neighborhood, an 18-hole championship golf course and clubhouse, a community center, pool, fitness facility and a dynamic lakefront gathering locale. “We’re excited about the construction of TPC Colorado, which has been a highly anticipated project from everyone involved and will feature the first TPC course to be built from the ground up since we opened TPC San Antonio in 2010,” said PGA TOUR Chairman of Golf Course Properties Charlie Zink. “More and more people are looking for places they can settle and either grow families or retire and live an active lifestyle. The community of TPC Colorado epitomizes that culture,” said Jon Turner, of Heron Lakes Investments, LLC. TPC Colorado’s championship golf course is designed by Arthur Schaupeter Golf Course Architects and, as with all TPC courses, is built with the infrastructure to accommodate a professional tournament. While the course can be stretched to over 7,900 yards for tournament competition, multiple tees on each hole will give recreational golfers an opportunity to play the course at any length, ranging from 4,000 yards up to 7,600 yards. The par-72 layout will features a variance of hole lengths, elevated ridges with

panoramic views of Long’s Peak and the entire Front Range and holes along the shorelines of the large reservoirs. Stackedsod pot bunkers and fescue-lined fairways will give golfers a sense of the Scottish heritage of the sport. In addition to TPC Network championship golf, the development includes a residential neighborhood with homes ranging from multi-million dollar custom estates to a diverse mix of luxurious townhomes and condos. Serving as an epicenter of the community, the TPC Colorado clubhouse will include a pro shop, grill, bar and dining room, expansive meeting and banquet spaces and a separate pool and exercise facility. A Marina Club will also be available for lake access and recreation, as well as a waterfront bar and grill with a pier and outdoor seating on the lake to provide members and public alike with a unique dining experience. More than eight miles of walking trails and countless recreation opportunities will reflect Colorado’s active outdoor culture, such as boating, biking, hiking and world-class fishing. The mixed-use master plan is also zoned for a 30-acre commercial component, allowing small businesses to provide products and services in what has been dubbed “Heron Lakes Golf Community.” Upholding the PGA TOUR’s commitment to environmental excellence and sustainability at its golf courses, TPC Colorado joined the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program, putting operation plans in place that practice sound environmental management. Fairways blend with the area’s natural terrain, reducing the environmental impact and allowing golfers to grow acquainted with the area’s varied ecosystems. Spring Issue 2019
Further enhancing the project, more than 90 acres of land have been donated to the Town of Berthoud for permanent open space and recreation, and over 40 acres were dedicated to a partnership that includes: Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO), a statewide organization committed to preserving and enhancing the state’s wildlife and native habitat, the Town of Berthoud,
City of Loveland, Larimer County, and Colorado Parks and Wildlife. GOCO, the Town of Berthoud, and Larimer County will work to protect the Great Blue Heron population on site – one of the largest heron rookeries in the state. TPC Colorado Welcomes Larry Collins as General Manager
TPC Colorado, the newest TPC Network golf course property, is pleased to announce the appointment of Larry Collins as general manager. Collins will rejoin the TPC Network after more than 26 years and will bring his vast experience and expertise to the club, ensuring members and guests receive the highest level of service consistent with the entire TPC Network. Bringing more than three decades of experience to TPC Colorado, Collins served the past 18 years as Director of Golf at The Golf Club at Omni Interlocken Hotel in Broomfield, Colo. While there, Collins spearheaded the opening of its 27-hole Resort Golf Club through all phases of development, aiding in the smooth transition from a resort/daily fee property to a successful semi-private club that significantly expanded membership over a five-year period. He also aided in the implementation of numerous
charity and professional tournaments, including the John Elway Celebrity Classic from 2000-2004. “I’m proud to be returning to the TPC family in the state I’ve called home for the past 25 years,” said Collins. “The TPC Network is well respected within the industry for its caliber of properties and standard of excellence.
